Machine learning (ML) algorithms are extensively used with outstanding prediction accuracy. However, in some cases, their overfitting capabilities, along with inadvertent biases, might produce overly optimistic results. Spatial data are a special kind of data that could introduce biases to ML due to their intrinsic spatial autocorrelation. To address this issue, a special resampling method has emerged called spatial cross-validation (SCV). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of SCV compared with conventional random cross-validation (CCV) used in most ML studies. Multiple ML models were created with CCV and SCV to predict groundwater electrical conductivity (EC) with data (A) from Rhodope, Greece, in the summer of 2020; (B) from the same area but at a different time (summer 2019); and (C) from a new area (the Salento peninsula, Italy). The results showed that the SCV provides ML models with superior generalization capabilities and, hence, better prediction results in new unknown data. The SCV seems to be able to capture the spatial patterns in the data while also reducing the over-optimism bias that is often associated with CCV methods. Studies dating almost a century relate clay properties with the structure of the diffuse double layer (DDL), where the charged surfaces of clay crystal behave like an electric capacitor, whose dielectric is the interstitial fluid. The intensity of the inner electric field relates to the concentration and type of ions in the DDL. Other important implications of the model are less stressed: this part of the clay soil system, energetically speaking, is conservative. External contribution of energy, work of overburden or sun driven capillarity and long exposure to border low salinity waters can modify the concentration of pore-waters, thus affecting the DDL geometry, with electric field and energy storage variations. The study of clay soils coming from various natural geomorphological and hydrogeological contexts, determining a different salinity of interacting groundwater, shows how the clay interaction with freely circulating waters at the boundaries produces alterations in the native pore water salinity, and, at the nano-scale, variations of electric field and stored energy from external work. The swelling and the shrinkage of clay soil with their volumetric and geotechnical implications should be regarded as variations of the electrostatic and mechanical energy of the system. The study is based on tests on natural clay soil samples coming from a formation of stiff blue clays, widespread in southern Italy. Geotechnical identification and oedometer tests have been performed, and pore waters squeezed out from the specimens have been analyzed. Tested samples have similar grain size, clay fraction and plasticity; sorted according to the classified geomorphological/hydrogeological contexts, they highlight good correlations among dry density, mechanical work performed in selected stages of the oedometric test, swelling and non-swelling behaviour, and electrical conductivity of the squeezed pore waters. The work performed for swelling and non-swelling samples shows well-defined differences; this endorse the relevance of pore-water salinity in determining the volumetric state of clay soils under overburden and specific hydrogeological border conditions, which together define a specific energetic state. This study aims at recognizing the mechanisms of mass transport between the karst surface and the saturated zone in a morphostructural relief of the Mesozoic karst carbonate platform of Murgia (Puglia, Southern Italy). The large dimension of the karst aquifer, the regional scale of the flow system, the boundary condition constituted by the sea, and the lack of freshwater springs constrain to the use of wells as monitoring points and limit the study area to the recharge area comprising 986 endorheic basins. The concentrations of non-reactive tracers (nitrates) in the waters of autogenic recharge (from endorheic basins) have been modeled through the evaluation of effective infiltration, land use, and nitrogen surplus, with reference to a time window, which includes a low precipitation period followed by significant rainfall events. The comparison between the modeled nitrate concentrations and the nitrate concentrations measured in ground waters, coupled with the analysis of groundwater chemograms and records of hydraulic heads (all referred to the same time window), allows inferring the mechanism of mass transport between the karst surface and the groundwater table. The mass transport conceptual model requires the presence of the epikarst. The infiltration of significant rainfall in the endorheic basins after a low precipitation period displaces waters stored in the epikarst toward the saturated zone. Ground waters in the post-event period show higher concentrations of nitrates, lower concentrations of total organic carbon, and higher Mg/Ca ratios than both those of the pre-event period and the autumn-winter recharge period. The post-event recharge from epikarst storage determines a transient hazard of groundwater pollution with a time lag from the occurrence of the heavy rainfall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Salento is a regional coastal karst aquifer located in Southern Italy with a highly complex geological, geomorphological, and hydrogeological structure. High and unruly exploitation of groundwater from licensed and unlicensed wells for irrigation and drinking purposes affects groundwater, with consequent degradation of its qualitative and quantitative status. The increased frequency of meteorological droughts and rising temperatures may only worsen the already compromised situation. The absence of complete and enduring monitoring of groundwater levels prevents the application of some methodologies, which require long time series. The analysis of climate indexes to describe the groundwater level variation is a possible approach under data scarcity. However, this approach may not be obvious for complex aquifers (in terms of scale, intrinsic properties, and boundary conditions) where the response of the groundwater to precipitation is not necessarily linear. Thus, the proposed research deals with the assessment of the response of the Salento aquifer to precipitation variability based on correlations between the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Standardized Precipitation and Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and groundwater levels for nine monitoring wells from July 2007 to December 2011. The study aims at evaluating the ability of the above indicators to explain the behavior of groundwater on complex aquifers. Moreover, it has the general aim to verify their more general reliable application. Results of three different correlation factors outline direct and statistically significant correlations between the time series. They describe the Salento aquifer as a slow filter, with a notable inertial behavior in response to meteorological events. Salento peninsula (Southern Italy) hosts a coastal carbonate and karst aquifer. The semi-arid climate is favourable to human settlement and the development of tourism and agricultural activities, which involve high water demand and groundwater exploitation rates, in turn causing groundwater depletion and salinization. In the last decades these issues worsened because of the increased frequency of droughts, which emerges from the analysis of Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), calculated during 1949–2011 on the base of monthly precipitation. Groundwater level series and chloride concentrations, collected over the extreme drought period 1989–1990, allow a qualitative assessment of groundwater behaviour, highlighting the concurrent groundwater drought and salinization. Irrigated agriculture plays a fundamental role as a supplier of food and raw materials. However, it is also the world's largest water user. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of studies analyzing agricultural irrigation from the perspective of sustainability with a focus on its environmental, economic, and social impacts. This study seeks to analyze the dynamics of global research in sustainable irrigation in agriculture between 1999 and 2018, including the main agents promoting it and the topics that have received the most attention. To do this, a review and a bibliometric analysis were carried out on a sample of 713 articles. The results show that sustainability is a line of study that is becoming increasingly more prominent within research in irrigation. The study also reveals the existence of substantial differences and preferred topics in the research undertaken by different countries. The priority issues addressed in the research were climatic change, environmental impact, and natural resources conservation; unconventional water resources; irrigation technology and innovation; and water use efficiency. Finally, the findings indicate a series of areas related to sustainable irrigation in agriculture in which research should be promoted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within a context of scarce water resources for agriculture, rainwater harvesting constitutes a promising alternative that has been studied by different disciplines in recent years. This article analyses the dynamics of global research on rainwater harvesting for agricultural irrigation over the last two decades. To do this, qualitative systematic analysis and quantitative bibliometric analysis have been carried out. The results reveal that this line of research is becoming increasingly important within research on irrigation. Environmental sciences and agricultural and biological sciences are the most relevant subject areas. Agricultural Water Management, Physics and Chemistry of the Earth, and Irrigation and Drainage are the journals that have published the most articles on the subject. India, China, the United States (USA), South Africa, and the Netherlands are the countries that lead this line of research. Although significant progress has been made in this subject area, it is necessary to increase the number of studies on the capacity of rainwater harvesting systems to cover irrigation needs in different farming contexts, the factors that determine their adoption by farmers, the economic and financial feasibility of their implementation, and their contribution to mitigating global climate change. Coastal karst aquifers show a three-dimensional vulnerability, which consists of the whole of the "intrinsic vulnerability" and the "groundwater vulnerability to seawater intrusion". The results of a study carried out in the Salento karst coastal aquifer (southern Italy) show that temperature, as well as being a reliable tracer of groundwater flow, is also an effective indicator of vulnerability in anisotropic media. The trend of isotherms related to a cross-section of the aquifer thermal field, combined with geological, geomorphological, and hydrogeological information, allows the role of faults and dolines in the mass transport from ground surface to be inferred. Isotherm trends may also give information on the permeability distribution along faults. The F'Kirina plain in eastern Algeria is an endorheic basin suffering water scarcity due to a combination of natural and man-made causes. Its hydrogeological system is complex as made by interconnected aquifers represented by Mesozoic, Cenozoic, and Quaternary lithological units. The combination of drought indicators and water level data shows that a groundwater drought affected the plain during the last 15 years, which reflects on current water quality. The reported geochemical analyses, including major ions and trace elements, indicate that the groundwater resource is suffering from salinization, mainly due to evaporation and leaching of soil salts, a process that is coupled with simultaneous cation-exchange effects. In this framework, we observe a geochemical evolution from the fresh Ca–HCO 3 facies, typical of springs bordering the plain, towards more saline groundwater characterized by chloride/sulphate-rich facies in the middle of the plain approaching the sebka. However, geochemical diagrams indicate that in few wells salinization is also influenced by upraising of deep groundwater. The water isotopic composition of the F'Kirina plain samples suggests that they diversely record both recharge and evaporation components. Moreover, the most 18O and D depleted compositions among the investigated ground-waters suggest recharge contributions by comparatively higher elevation or the involvement of old (fossil) water components. The growing groundwater withdrawal rates in coastal aquifers in arid/semi-arid regions exacerbate seawater intrusion and saltwater upconing by causing groundwater salinization and potential adverse and cascading effects to related groundwater-depending systems. This study aims to highlight the dynamics of groundwater salinization in time and space by comparing the efficacy of statistical (hierarchical cluster and factor analyses) and hydrogeochemical (hydrogeochemical facies evolution) methods. Multi-temporal groundwater samples collected from the monitoring well network in the study area (Salento Aquifer, Puglia region, Southern Italy) have been considered to recognize such dynamics. By comparing the spatial and temporal evolution of water clusters, factor scores, and hydrogeochemical facies, the proposed methodological approach enables the identification of zones characterized by low dynamics of freshening and intrusion processes (with invariant features during the investigated period), which correspond to groundwater recharge areas and zones subject to groundwater salinization respectively. On the contrary, a high spatial and temporal variability of salinization dynamics typifies the zones subject to alternation of groundwater characteristics. These results allow outlining a preliminary hazard map related to groundwater salinization processes, which might be a useful tool for policymakers and stakeholders involved in groundwater management of coastal aquifers.
