An International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) workshop was held at Sydney University, Australia, from 13 to 16 June 2017 and was attended by 97 scientists from 12 countries. The aim of the workshop was to investigate future drilling opportunities in the eastern Indian Ocean, southwestern Pacific Ocean, and the Indian and Pacific sectors of the Southern Ocean. The overlying regional sedimentary strata are underexplored relative to their Northern Hemisphere counterparts, and thus the role of the Southern Hemisphere in past global environmental change is poorly constrained. A total of 23 proposal ideas were discussed, with ∼ 12 of these deemed mature enough for active proposal development or awaiting scheduled site survey cruises. Of the remaining 11 proposals, key regions were identified where fundamental hypotheses are testable by drilling, but either site surveys are required or hypotheses need further development. Refinements are anticipated based upon regional IODP drilling in 2017/2018, analysis of recently collected site survey data, and the development of site survey proposals. We hope and expect that this workshop will lead to a new phase of scientific ocean drilling in the Australasian region in the early 2020s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses a workshop on scientific drilling of Indian Ocean sponsored by the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR), India that was held in Goa, India in October 2011. The main aim of workshop is to improve existing proposals, build new proposals and initiate alliances essential for drilling proposals in Indian Ocean. The workshop featured seventy Indian and forty international scientists.

Australia and New Zealand are partners in the world's largest international geoscience program, the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), which involves both geoscientists and microbiologists. IODP takes sediment and rock cores from as deep as several kilometres below the sea bed, in order to explore how the Earth has worked in the past and how it is working now. Many ocean drilling expeditions have been carried out in our region since the early 1970s and a great amount of fascinating scientific knowledge of global significance has been gained. We present and discuss a few fission track data, and microstructural observations, from rock samples dredged along the western and southwestern continental margin of Tasmania. The results allow assessing the thermal and tectonic regimes that were active prior to and during the margin creation. The different ages, as provided by fission tracks, and deformational styles, as evidenced from microstructures, are then tentatively correlated with the two main rifting episodes, in Late Jurassic–Cretaceous times and Eocene–Oligocene respectively, deduced from kinematical reconstructions, that have led to the present- day southern margin of Tasmania.
