The article constructs a fictitious dialogue between the author and a group of 17 former sugar workers interviewed in various parts of the country between 2004 and 2015 about the closure of sugar mills officially decreed in 2002. The fragments, selected from a group of longer testimonies, are ordered according to a temporal logic that aspires to reflect the three great moments of that complex process of restructuring an industry that had been until now the main support of the economy: the first comprises until the beginning of the process, the second, the relatively brief time during which the order to close, dismantle and redistribute the equipment and goods was executed, the third what was left later. The raw emotions of the witnesses interviewed do not require any scientific explanation to be understood by the reader.

This work explores sequential surface treatments involving atmospheric-air plasma and (3-glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GLYMO) to enhance the tensile properties of aramid/epoxy composites. To prove the technical advantages of this approach, aramid fibers received individual (atmospheric-air plasma or GLYMO) or sequential (plasma followed by GLYMO, and vice versa) surface treatments. Single fiber tensile tests (SFT) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to characterize changes in aramid fibers upon the surface modifications. SFT revealed that none of the surface treatments compromised their tensile strength (σmax). Applying GLYMO, whether individually or in sequence (GLYMO followed by plasma and plasma followed by GLYMO), led to a significant enhancement in the fibers' elastic modulus (E). Composites with plasma-treated fibers displayed a 5% increase in E and an 8.5% increase in σmax, with no changes in toughness. However, the most notable improvements were achieved through sequential plasma followed by GLYMO treatments, resulting in a ~ 10% increase in σmax and a remarkable ~ 40% improvement in toughness. Plasma introduces oxygen-containing groups to the fiber surface, facilitating GLYMO grafting. Subsequent crosslinking of GLYMO with the epoxy resin strengthens the fiber-matrix interface. We reported here a one‐step chemical route to prepare nanocomposites comprising CuS nanophases supported on GO sheets with magnetic properties. The synthesis reported here combines such materials in single‐nanostructures that show morphological features well‐suited for wastewater treatment. The photocatalytic performance of CuS/GO nanocomposites was first investigated towards the removal of a common organic dye (rhodamine B) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX), which is an antibiotic considered a water contaminant of emerging concern. The RhB and SMX adsorption efficiency of CuS/GO and Fe3O4/GO/CuS hybrids, as well as of CuS particles, was significantly higher than GO or Fe3O4/GO. Overall, the CuS‐based magnetic and CuS/GO hybrids have shown the capacity to uptake more than 80 % of RhB or SMX, after 120 minutes. Under blue‐led irradiation, almost complete degradation of RhB was achieved in the presence of CuS/Fe3O4/GO, after 180 minutes; and higher than 85 % degradation of SMX, after 240 minutes of irradiation. The photocatalytic behaviour of nanocomposites was best described by the first–order kinetic model, for which k values for degradation of RhB and SMX followed the order: CuS/Fe3O4/GO>CuS/GO>CuS. The tricomponent CuS/Fe3O4/GO can be easily recovered after use and be reused maintain their high photocatalytic performance, thus providing a sustainable and cost‐effective hybrid solution for water treatment. Up to 10% of cases of gastric cancer are familial, but so far, only mutations in CDH1 have been associated with gastric cancer risk. To identify genetic variants that affect risk for gastric cancer, we collected blood samples from 28 patients with hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) not associated with mutations in CDH1 and performed whole-exome sequence analysis. We then analyzed sequences of candidate genes in 333 independent HDGC and non-HDGC cases. We identified 11 cases with mutations in PALB2, BRCA1, or RAD51C genes, which regulate homologous DNA recombination. We found these mutations in 2 of 31 patients with HDGC (6.5%) and 9 of 331 patients with sporadic gastric cancer (2.8%). Most of these mutations had been previously associated with other types of tumors and partially co-segregated with gastric cancer in our study. Tumors that developed in patients with these mutations had a mutation signature associated with somatic homologous recombination deficiency. Our findings indicate that defects in homologous recombination increase risk for gastric cancer.

Familial nonmedullary thyroid cancer (NMTC) has not been clearly linked to causal germline variants, despite the large role that genetic factors play in risk. Recently, HABP2 G534E (rs7080536A) has been implicated as a causal variant in NMTC. We have previously shown that the HABP2 G534E variant is not associated with TC risk in patients from the British Isles. Hispanics are the largest and the youngest minority in the United States and NMTC is now the second most common malignancy in women from this population. In order to determine if the HABP2 G534E variant played a role in NMTC risk among Hispanic populations, we analyzed 281 cases and 1105 population-matched controls from a multicenter study in Colombia, evaluating the association through logistic regression. We found that the HABP2 G534E variant was not significantly associated with NMTC risk (P=0.843) in this Hispanic group. We also stratified available clinical data by multiple available clinicopathological variables and further analyzed the effect of HABP2 on NMTC presentation. However, we failed to detect associations between HABP2 G534E and NMTC risk, regardless of disease presentation (P≥0.273 for all cases). Therefore, without any significant associations between the HABP2 G534E variant and NMTC risk, we conclude that the variant is not causal of NMTC in this Hispanic population.

This article explores the relevance and challenge of Catholic Social Teaching (CST) and internationalization to the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) program at the University of San Diego. These issues are discussed in the context of a graduate level course on human diversity that culminated in a 1-day cultural immersion and service learning trip to Tijuana, Mexico. Students learned firsthand about the legacies of colonialism, poverty, and injustice as well as the resilience and potential of rural Mexican communities to transform these experiences into new cultural and business practices, healing, and survival against many odds. Excerpts from student essays suggest the potential for MFT programs to create a space in Catholic higher education in which the intersection of CST and MFT could be openly examined and realized with opportunities to create new knowledge and energy to work for social change and justice beyond the borders. The pedagogical challenges, recommendations, and areas for future inquiry are discussed.

The study determined the intervention activities of elementary Mathematics Teachers implemented during the new normal. A descriptive design was utilized to conduct the study. Elementary Mathematics teachers from Grade 1 to Grade 6 level, with a total of 158, became the participants in the study. In data collection, the researchers utilized the survey checklist that was distributed face-to-face among the teacher participants. Likewise, Google Forms were also used to give a chance to others who chose WFH due to health issues. Data collected was analyzed, evaluated, and interpreted using the primary frequency distribution. Based on the findings on the frequency distribution of mathematics teachers who have implemented intervention activities in terms of improving teachers' competence, conducting FGD ranked first at 35%, followed by conducting LAC at 34%. Then, the Intensifying mentoring/coaching of MTs ranked 3rd, with 39 teachers utilizing it, and Attending Online Webinars in Teaching Strategies ranked 4th. However, some of the challenges met by Math Teachers in the implementation of intervention activities in terms of assessing the performance of learners include the irregular attendance of pupils during online drills, lack of interest/motivation of learners, unavailability of gadgets, and lack of communication to guardians due to some priorities. Findings revealed the following conclusions: Intervention activities are vital in the implementation of new learning modalities, specifically in modular distance learning. Intervention activities should consider the following factors/consideration for their effectiveness: assessing the performance level of learners, reducing the number of nonnumerates, and improving teachers' competence. Background: A consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic was that the provision of mental health services was reduced in several countries around the world, while the demand for mental health services increased. Aims: Our study aims to determine any variation in the number of users served, health appointments, and care activities conducted at 58 Peruvian community mental health centers (CMHCs) between March 2019 and October 2021. Methods: Our study used an observational design and analyzed information from the care provided in CMHCs. We evaluate the number of users served, health appointments, and care activities performed per month. The main statistical analysis used segmented regression with Newey-West standard errors, taking into account each month of the evaluation. Results: We had 988,456 unique users during the period evaluated. Regarding diagnoses, 7.4% (n = 72,818) had a severe mental problem, 39.4% (n = 389,330) a common mental problem, and 53.2% (n = 526,308) others health problems. The study found a reduction in the number of users served and health care appointments at the 58 CMHCs in March 2020, the month in which the closure measures were declared to reduce COVID-19 infections in Peru. This reduction was followed by an upward trend in the three variables during the pandemic in the 58 CMHCs studied. In, November 2020, 9 months after the pandemic started, the deficit in the average number of users served per month was recovered. Conclusions: Our study suggests that CMHCs in the Peruvian system were able to regain care capacity approximately 1 year after the pandemic. Objectives. The improvised and massive adoption of remote work in the context of COVID-19 has forced us to adapt homes as workspaces, which could promote development of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). This review explores the evidence for ergonomic factors associated with MSDs in teleworkers. Methods. A literature search was conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, SciELO and EBSCO. We included observational studies published between March 2020 and October 2021 that included teleworking personnel due to the restrictions of the pandemic. Results. A total of 212 studies were identified, 14 were chosen for complete review. Associated factors were change of work modality (on-site work to telework), use of home environments as workspaces (areas not adapted for work and with low lighting), working furniture (non-ergonomic chairs and desks), use of electronic devices (tablets, cell phones and laptops), organizational factors (working hours,active breaks, sitting time) and individual factors (physical activity practice). Conclusion. Various ergonomic home factors and the characteristics of teleworking - mainly furniture, the environment of work and physical activity - are associated with MSDs. This evidence suggests that the norms and regulation of telework can consider the adaptation of workspace and conditions at home to prevent health problems in the medium and long term. Governments globally deployed various non-pharmacological public health measures to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e. lockdowns and suspension of transportation, amongst others); some of these measures had an influence on society's mental health. Specific mental health policies were therefore implemented to mitigate the potential mental health impact of the pandemic. We aimed to explore the implementation of mental health regulations adopted by the Peruvian health system by focusing on the care services at Community Mental Health Centres (CMHCs), based on the experiences of health workers. We conducted a phenomenological qualitative study to understand the implementation of mental health policies launched in Peru during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were obtained from a document review of 15 national policy measures implemented during the pandemic (March 2020 to September 2021), and 20 interviews with health workers from CMHCs (September 2021 to February 2022). The analysis was conducted using thematic content analysis. Most implemented policies adapted CMHC care services to a virtual modality during the COVID-19 pandemic; however, various challenges and barriers were evidenced in the process, which prevented effective adaptation of services. Workers perceived that ineffective telemedicine use was attributed to a gap in access to technology at the CMHCs and also by users, ranging from limited access to technological devices to a lack of technological skills. Further, although mental health promotion and prevention policies targeting the community were proposed, CMHC staff reported temporary interruption of these services during the first wave. The disparity between what is stated in the regulations and the experiences of health workers is evident. Policies that focus on mental health need to provide practical and flexible methods taking into consideration both the needs of CMHCs and socio-cultural characteristics that may affect their implementation. Objective. To understand the experiences of new and continuing users of Community Mental Health Centers (CMHC) of Lima and Callao, and their relatives, regarding the mental health care they received during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods. Qualitative study conducted between September 2021 and February 2022, in which we interviewed 24 users and family members who interacted with the services provided by three CMHCs in Lima and one in Callao during the COVID-19 pandemic. We carried out a thematic analysis of the transcribed interviews. Results. Participants perceived that the pandemic exacerbated the symptoms of people with mental health problems. During the pandemic, mental health care relied on the use of technology, mainly telephone calls, which were used to monitor the emotional state and pharmacological treatment of users, as well as to schedule and remember appointments. The users emphasized that frequent telephone calls made them feel accompanied and highlighted the commitment of the CMHC workers. Among the difficulties, they reported an increase in the demand for care, problems in accessing video calls, and low quality in virtual care. Conclusions. COVID-19 had an emotional impact on people with mental health problems; in turn, CMHC services were affected by the type of care (face-to-face or virtual), resources, frequency, time and quality of care, finding limitations and benefits in the use of technology. This article reviews the development of a new measure to assess children's perceptions of intergenerational boundary violations in families. The Boundary Violations Scale is a theoretically derived instrument consisting of 12 items. Principal components analysis using data from 119 young adolescents from diverse ethnic backgrounds (i.e., 56% Hispanic and 44% non-Hispanic) revealed three factors (promoting maturity, forming coalitions, and communicating as peers) that are consistent with the behavioral manifestations of this construct as posited by structural family theory. The validity of the measure was supported by significant correlations with theoretically relevant measures of family processes and child adjustment as reported by children and their mothers.

Assessed impact of training undergraduates in multicultural counseling competencies. When compared with a control group of students in a psychology of personality course (n=20), repeated measures analyses of variance confirmed that multicultural counseling trainees (n=21) significantly increased levels of multicultural counseling awareness and knowledge. As expected, there were no significant changes in either multicultural counseling skills or empathic responding. (Author)
