Abstract

Binary lithium silicides and germanides as well as ternary lithium phosphidotetrelates have been intensively investigated with regard to their suitability as anode materials for all‐solid‐state‐batteries. In this context we studied the ternary phase diagram Li/Tt/P on the phosphorus‐poor side. The phosphide tetrelides Li10.68(8)Si5P and Li10.1(2)Ge5P are ternary compounds in the respective phase systems so far uniquely featuring discrete building blocks, which were previously found exclusively in binary alkali metal tetrelides and phosphides. Li10.68(8)Si5P and Li10.1(2)Ge5P contain aromatic Tt5 pentagons with an environment of mostly ordered Li atoms and isolated P3− anions with a coordination environment of predominantly disordered Li atoms. The five‐membered ring subunits are stacked under formation of ∞1 [Li6Tt5] chains (Tt=Si, Ge). chains. The compounds crystallize in the space group Pnma (63) (Z=4) with cell parameters of a=10.2434(3) Å, b=4.2788(1) Å, c=23.9767(3) Å for Li10.68(8)Si5P and a=10.3599(11) Å, b=4.3072(2) Å, c=24.267(2) Å for Li10.1(2)Ge5P. The single crystal structure determination is supplemented by X‐ray powder diffraction experiments and 7Li, 29Si and 31P solid state MAS NMR spectroscopy. With respect to their electron count the compounds are placed between compounds comprising aromatic five‐membered rings such as the electron‐precise Zintl phase Li8MgSi6 and the non‐classical Zintl phase Li12Si7 having two extra electrons. Abstract

Swirling flames are used in many industrial applications, such as process furnaces, boilers, and gas turbines due to their excellent mixing, stability, emission, and burnout characteristics. The wide-spread use of swirl burners in the process and energy industries and, in particular, new concepts for the reduction of N[O.sub.x] emissions, raises the need for simple-to-use models for predicting lean stability limits of highly turbulent flames stabilized by internal recirculation. based on recently published experimental data of the first author concerning the reaction structures of swirling flames operating near the extinction limit, different methods for predicting lean blow-off limits have been developed and tested. The aim of the investigations was to find stabilization criteria that allow predictions of blow-off limits of highly turbulent recirculating flames without the requirement for measurements in those flames. Several similarity criteria based on volumetric flow rates, burner size, and material parameters of the cold gases were found to be capable of predicting stability limits of premixed and (in some cases) nonpremixed flames at varying swirl intensities, burner scales and fuel compositions. A previously developed numerical field model, combining a k-[Epsilon] model with a combined 'assumed-shape joint-PDF'/eddy-dissipation reaction model was also tested for its potential for stability prediction.

Abstract

At the Heavy Ion Research Institute GSI in Darmstadt an experimental cancer treatment program with a five years duration has been developed. A new method for cancer treatment with ions is applied, using rasterscan method in addition to an active pulse to pulse variation of ion beam properties, including the energy, intensity and focusing. An overview of this Cancer Therapy Project is presented, that covers both accelerator aspects to provide the required beam variations within a short time and the installations at the treatment place for rasterscan control. In addition to a description of the technical design (control-hard- and software) experimental results will be shown, containing the achieved beam properties and measurements of rasterscan performance. 36. Investigation of large angle structure in α-scattering from calcium isotopes between E=36-61 MeV.

Abstract

Elastic α-scattering angular distributions have been measured at E=36.2 MeV, 39.6 MeV, 42.6 MeV, 49.5 MeV, 61.0 MeV forCa and at E=36.2 MeV, 42.6 MeV, 49.5 MeV and 61.0 MeV forCa, respectively. At backward angles the data display an oscillatory structure for E<50 MeV and more smoothly decreasing slopes at E =61.0 MeV resembling the data obtained at higher energies. TheCa data below E =50 MeV show the well known backward enhancement, which at 42.6 MeV and 49.5 MeV can be fitted by a P and a P respectively. Together with previous data, P-structures have now been observed for all L-values between L=8 and L=16. The slope of the curve L(L+1) versus excitation energy is slightly smaller for L>12 than for L<12. Optical model analyses (within a Woods-Saxon-folding model) lead to large differences between theCa andCa parameters. Furthermore, in our parametrization, theCa real potential depth shows dramatic changes with energy. This feature seems outside the domain of the optical model and requires consideration of additional effects (e.g. antisymmetrization) not included in the standard optical model. Present microscopic calculations on the basis of the Resonating Group Method are discussed in connection with the characteristic features of α-scattering fromCa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
