Background: Sudden death is defined as an unexpected death occurring with no observed antecedent clinical signs. Aim: The current study was performed to notice the tangible causes of sudden death among 51 out of 340 she-camels on a private farm in the eastern region of El Khafgi, Saudi Arabia. Methods: A retrospective cohort study design was conducted to investigate sudden death of camels through microscopic examination of fecal matter to identify the gastrointestinal parasites, analysis of whole blood thin films to diagnose blood parasites, blood culturing to recognize bacterial infection as Pasteurella multicida, and macroscopic postmortem examination to identify the gastrointestinal adult worm. The quantity and composition of feed were also analyzed. Afterward, a commercial multiscreen Ag-ELISA kit technique determined the toxins of Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens). Results: The results revealed that the incidence rate of sudden death was 15%. The sudden death occurred due to C. perfringens enterotoxins detected in the rumen, intestinal content, and intestinal wall. The enterotoxins and Alpha toxins were noticed, but the other toxin types, including Beta and Epsilon, could not be detected. All C. perfringens toxins were discovered to be negative in fecal matter. A significant association was reported between sudden death, she-camels age, and feeding habits as risk factors (P = 0.020 and 0.028, respectively). Risk factor assessment by relative risk (RR) revealed that the odds of RR of sudden death occurring among she-camelss aged over two years were higher than those less than two years (2.24 CI 95%, 1.093-4.591). Furthermore, the odds RR of sudden death occurring due to exposure of she-camels to a concentrated ratio of 18% were higher twice than those not exposed (2.346 CI 95%, 1.039-5.296). Conclusion: C. perfringens enterotoxaemia should be listed as a cause of sudden death in camels and the alteration in diet with 18% concentration feed changes the intestinal environment, which leads to C. perfringens proliferating and yielding potent toxins. More observations and interferences like regular immunization are recommended to reduce the disease and increase the awareness of the farmers of the importance of risk factors. Food safety and forensic applications rely seriously on identifying meat samples of unknown species. Mutton meat is delicious and high-priced meat. Its tallow is a flavoring precursor to being authenticated by using different meat species. Mutton authenticity by beef meat that is genetically related to each other makes it difficult to detect fraud of products, mainly if the substitution is applied with fat, not only meat. So, accurate methods for detection must be applied to evaluate meat fraud based not only on protein but also on fat substitution. This work aimed to evaluate the mutton meat substitution by meat and fat of beef using multiplex PCR and Gas Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS/MS). Multiplex PCR detects cytochrome b in mutton meat adulterated with different concentrations of beef meat, even with 0.5%. PCR products amplified at 274 bp for mutton and 271 bp for beef. Fatty acid profile of pure mutton meat (tallow) samples and mutton authenticated with beef meat by GC/MS/MS. It was found that it contained 39.48 mg/100 g of total saturated fatty acids (TSFA), 60.48 mg/100 g of total unsaturated fatty acids (TUSFA), and 3.4 mg/100 g of trans-fatty acids (TFA). While after being authenticated with beef, these results changed to 49.58, 49.57, and 6.37 mg/100gm for TSFA, TUSFA, and TFA, respectively. In conclusion, Multiplex PCR and GC/MS/MS evidenced to be accurate and applicable for the recognition of mutton meat authentication.

This study aimed at investigating the potential role of β-glucan in improving the immunity, anti-inflammatory and histopathology disorders induced by chlorpyrifos in Nile tilapia. Fish were allocated in four group where the control fed the basal diet without chlorpyrifos toxicity and chlorpyrifos group fed the basal diet and subjected to chlorpyrifos (15 μg/L water). The third group fed dietary β-glucan (1 g/kg diet) without chlorpyrifos toxicity and the fourth group fed dietary β-glucan and exposed to chlorpyrifos (β-glucan/chlorpyrifos). Results revealed that the exposure to chlorpyrifos tended to decrease final body weight (FBW), weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), and survival but increased the feed intake (FI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Administration of β-glucan tended to increase FBW, WG, SGR, survival, and FI but did not change the FCR. Exposure to chlorpyrifos did not change the blood alkaline phosphatase (ALP) but increased aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and cortisol levels whereas β-glucan administration markedly decreased ALP, AST, ALT, and cortisol levels and β-glucan/chlorpyrifos treatment declined the levels of these variable close to the baseline values. Compared to the control, chlorpyrifos administration tended to decrease the lysozyme and phagocytic index but no change was observed in phagocytic activity. β-Glucan administration greatly increased the levels of lysozyme, phagocytic activity and phagocytic index, and β-glucan tended to alleviate the negative effect of chlorpyrifos on the mentioned parameters. The chlorpyrifos exposure caused congestion and telangiectasia in gills, catarrhal enteritis followed by degeneration and sloughing of the apical part of the intestinal villi with diffused lymphocytic infiltration, and fatty degeneration and vacuolation of hepatocytes in addition to congestion of blood sinusoids in liver. However, the histopathological structure of these organs was normal with dietary β-glucan. In conclusion, β-glucan administration alleviated the adverse effects of chlorpyrifos on the immune and anti-inflammatory response as well as histopathology of gills, liver, and intestine of Nile tilapia.

This study investigated the influence of probiotic Pediococcus acidilactici MA 18/5 M on the metabolic enzyme activities and mRNA levels of growth, immunity, and antioxidative-related genes in zebrafish. Zebrafish fed with diets containing P. acidilactici MA 18/5 M at 0, 107, 108, and 109 CFU/g levels for eight weeks. The obtained results revealed that the creatine phosphokinase, lactate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase remained unchanged in all groups (P > 0.05). CPF (chlorpyrifos) is an organophosphate pesticide used in agricultural and veterinary applications. Our experiment aimed to explore the effects of thymoquinone (TQ) and/or lycopene (LP) against CPF-induced neurotoxicity. Wistar rats were categorized into seven groups: first group served as a control (corn oil only); second group, TQ (10 mg/kg); third group, LP (10 mg/kg); fourth group, CPF (10 mg/kg) and deemed as CPF toxic control; fifth group, TQ + CPF; sixth group, (LP + CPF); and seventh group, (TQ + LP + CPF). CPF intoxication inhibited acetylcholinesterase (AchE), decreased glutathione (GSH) content, and increased levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), an oxidative stress biomarker. Furthermore, CPF impaired the activity of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) along with enhancement of the level of inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1β. CPF evoked apoptosis in brain tissue. TQ or LP treatment of CPF-intoxicated rats greatly improved AchE activity, oxidative state, inflammatory responses, and cell death. Co-administration of TQ and LP showed better restoration than their sole treatment. In conclusion, TQ or LP supplementation may alleviate CPF-induced neuronal injury, most likely due to TQ or LPs’ antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects.
