In understanding of the hot spot phenomenon in single-molecule surface enhanced Raman scattering (SM-SERS), the electromagnetic field within the gaps of dimers (i.e., two particle systems) has attracted much interest as it provides significant field amplification over single isolated nanoparticles. In addition to the existing understanding of the dimer systems, we show in this paper that field enhancement within the gaps of a particle chain could maximize at a particle number N>2, due to the near-field coupled plasmon resonance of the chain. This particle number effect was theoretically observed for the gold (Au) nanoparticles chain but not for the silver (Ag) chain. We attribute the reason to the different behaviors of the dissipative damping of gold and silver in the visible wavelength range. Large, high efficiency, volume Bragg gratings with dimensions of 5 mm × 5 mm and thickness between 1 and 7 mm with 20 μm pitch have been inscribed in poly(methyl)methacrylate (PMMA) with 180 fs, 387 nm parallel beams using both linear and circular polarizations. Linear polarization (perpendicular to the scan direction) produced the highest refractive index contrast, while circular polarization produced the lowest. The measured first-order diffraction efficiency with grating thickness L agrees well with theoretical expectations, and reached a maximum of 94% near L = 4 mm, the highest yet observed in pure PMMA. The source of the variation in refractive index contrast was investigated, and it was found to be due to the polarization-dependent nonlinear filamentation, the first such observation in a pure polymer. A detailed study has been conducted into the effect of laser process parameters on the production of laser induced periodic surface structures in 316L stainless steel using a pulsed picosecond fibre laser. Periodic structures were produced via scanning of the incident beam at varying speeds in order to control the pulse overlap. Feature depth and uniformity were found to rely heavily upon both the scan speed and pulse energy. Inhomogeneous feature production across the track cross-section was observed and attributed to the Gaussian nature of the incident beam. Features were observed oriented perpendicularly to the direction of polarization for linearly polarized light with a period approximately equal to the incident light wavelength. This period was observed to alter with incident angle and a dependency on laser scan direction was also found. A threshold intensity value for the production of laser induced surface ripples was calculated from a Gaussian analysis of measured track width. The threshold value when machining at 200 kHz, 750 mm/s, and 2 µJ was calculated to be 2.35 x 1014 W/m². [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Laser forming offers the industrial promise of controlled shaping of metallic and non-metallic components for prototyping, correction of design shape or distortion and precision adjustment applications. In order to fulfil this promise in a manufacturing environment the process must have a high degree of controllability, which can be achieved through a better understanding of its underlying mechanisms. One area of limited understanding is that of the variation in bend angle per pass observed during multi-pass laser forming along a single irradiation track, notably the decrease in bend angle per pass after many irradiations. Finite element (FE) modelling can be used to ascertain which of the various process parameters (such as graphite burn-off, geometrical effects, variation in absorption, etc.) contribute towards this phenomenon and subsequently the magnitude of their contribution. Two-dimensional (2-D) laser forming (LF) can currently control bend angle, with reasonably accurate results, in various materials including aerospace alloys. However, this is a different situation for three-dimensional (3-D) LF. To advance this process further for realistic forming applications and for straightening and aligning operations in a manufacturing industry it is necessary to consider larger scale controlled 3-D LF. The work presented in this paper uses a predictive and adaptive approach to control the LF of mild steel and aluminium sheet into a desired surface. Key to the control of the process was the development of a predictive model to give scan strategies based on a required geometry and the surface error. The forming rate and distribution of the magnitude of forming across the surface were controlled in the closed loop by the process speed. When the geometry is not formed within one pass, an incremental adaptive approach is used for subsequent passes, utilising the error between the current and desired geometry to give a new scan strategy, thus any unwanted distortion due to material variability can be accounted for and distortion control and removal is possible. The use of a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (SLM) device to convert a linearly polarized femtosecond laser beam into a radially or azimuthally polarized vortex beam is demonstrated. In order to verify the state of polarization at the focal plane, laser induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) are produced on stainless steel, imprinting the complex vectorial polarization structures and confirming the efficacy of the SLM in producing the desired polarization modes. Stainless steel plates of various thicknesses are micromachined with the radially and azimuthally polarized vortex beams and the resulting cut-outs are analysed. The process efficiency and quality of each mode are compared with those of circular polarization. Radial polarization is confirmed to be the most efficient mode for machining high-aspect-ratio (depth/width >3) channels thanks to its relatively higher absorptivity. Following our microprocessing tests, liquid-crystal SLMs emerged as a flexible off-the-shelf tool for producing radially and azimuthally polarized beams in existing ultrashort-pulse laser microprocessing systems. Spatial light modulator addressed with computer generated holograms is used to diffract femtosecond laser pulses into > 15 parallel beams and focused simultaneously inside poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) for high throughput 3D refractive index modification. Uniform modification throughout the structure is demonstrated and used to create a 19 μm pitch, 5 × 5 × 3.5 mm³ thick volume grating in < 50 minutes with first order Bragg diffraction efficiency > 65%. Thick volume phase gratings are created by carefully stitching filamentary modifications. PMMA shows a remarkable time dependent Δn, related to the photochemistry during and after exposure. To date there has been a considerable amount of work carried out on two-dimensional LF, using multi-pass straight line scan strategies to produce a reasonably controlled bend angle in a number of materials, including aerospace alloys. A key area, however, where there is a limited understanding, is the variation in bend angle per pass during multi-pass LF along a single irradiation track; in particular, the decrease in bend angle per pass after many irradiations for a given set of process parameters. Understanding this is essential if the process is to be fully controlled in a manufacturing environment. The research presented in this paper highlights the current theories as to why this occurs and proposes a further reason based on the geometrical effects of the component deformation, which in turn influences the process parameters per pass. Precise tailoring of optical vector beams is demonstrated, shaping their focal electric fields and used to create complex laser micro-patterning on a metal surface. A Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) and a micro-structured S-waveplate were integrated with a picosecond laser system and employed to structure the vector fields into radial and azimuthal polarizations with and without a vortex phase wavefront as well as superposition states. Imprinting Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structures (LIPSS) elucidates the detailed vector fields around the focal region. In addition to clear azimuthal and radial plasmon surface structures, unique, variable logarithmic spiral micro-structures with a pitch Λ ∼1μm, not observed previously, were imprinted on the surface, confirming unambiguously the complex 2D focal electric fields. We show clearly also how the Orbital Angular Momentum(OAM) associated with a helical wavefront induces rotation of vector fields along the optic axis of a focusing lens and confirmed by the observed surface micro-structures.

The polarization state of an ultrafast laser is dynamically controlled using two Spatial Light Modulators and additional waveplates. Consequently, four states of polarization, linear horizontal and vertical, radial and azimuthal, all with a ring intensity distribution, were dynamically switched at a frequency ν = 12.5 Hz while synchronized with a motion control system. This technique, demonstrated here for the first time, enables a remarkable level of real-time control of the properties of light waves and applied to real-time surface patterning, shows that highly controlled nanostructuring is possible. We report on new developments in wavefront and polarization control for ultrashort-pulse laser microprocessing. We use two Spatial Light Modulators in combination to structure the optical fields of a picosecond-pulse laser beam, producing vortex wavefronts and radial or azimuthal polarization states. We also carry out the first demonstration of multiple first-order beams with vortex wavefronts and radial or azimuthal polarization states, produced using Computer Generated Holograms. The beams produced are used to nano-structure a highly polished metal surface. Laser Induced Periodic Surface Structures are observed and used to directly verify the state of polarization in the focal plane and help to characterize the optical properties of the setup.
