Although the European flounder is frequently used in research and has economic importance, there is still lack of comprehensive transcriptome data for this species. In the present research we show RNA-Seq data from ten selected organs of P. flesus female inhabiting brackish waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk (southern Baltic Sea). High throughput Next Generation Sequencing technology NovaSeq 6000 was used to generate 500 M sequencing reads. These were mapped against European flounder reference genome and reads extracted from the mapping were assembled producing 61k reliable contigs. Gene ontology (GO) terms were assigned to the majority of annotated contigs/unigenes based on the results of PFAM, PANTHER, UniProt and InterPro protein databases searches. BUSCOs statistics for eukaryota, metazoa, vertebrata and actinopterygii databases showed that the reported transcriptome represents a high level of completeness. The composition of the erythron of the head kidney (pronephros) and circulating blood of the cold-loving European flounder (Platichthys flesus L., 1758) has been studied throughout its annual cycle. The erythron of the pronephros is represented mainly by erythroblasts (EBs) and basophilic normoblasts (BNs). The content of polychromatophilic normoblasts (PNs) is low (less than 2%). The maximum size of the erythroid germ of hematopoiesis in the pronephros has been recorded during the postspawning period (April–July). It reaches 17% of the cellular mass of the prints. BNs and PNs, which were not capable of proliferation, generally prevailed in the blood. The maximum content of these cell forms was also recorded during the postspawning period. Cells of earlier generations (EBs) were not detected at all in the blood. The increase in the production of erythroid cells by hematopoietic tissue coincided with an increase in the number of circulating erythrocytes in the blood of European flounder (R2 = 0.608 and 0.991), which indicated a shift in the erythrocyte balance in the red blood system towards production processes. Flatfish are ecologically diverse species that commonly occur in marine environments, but also in estuarine and riverine habitats. This complicates the examination of the potential role of flatfish in the 'marine fish event horizon', an economic shift in human exploitation from freshwater to marine fish species during the 10–11th centuries CE around the southern North Sea. This study represents the first multi‐disciplinary investigation of flatfish remains to make species‐specific interpretations of flatfish exploitation. Peptide mass fingerprinting and multi‐isotope analysis of carbon (δ13C), nitrogen (δ15N) and sulphur (δ34S) was performed on collagen from 356 archaeological flatfish and 120 comparative archaeological marine or freshwater species to explore the catch habitat of individual flatfish species between 600 and 1600 CE from the North Sea area. European flounder show signals reflecting both freshwater and marine environments, while other flatfish show only those of marine habitats. A subtle shift towards more marine exploitation towards the end of the period is identified, corresponding to the observed transition in targeted species from flounder to plaice throughout the medieval period. Sites show slight differences in δ13C and δ34S within the same species, related to the local environments. Remarkable is the high abundance of marine plaice and flounder during the early medieval period, which shows clear marine or coastal exploitation of flatfish early on, well before the previously accepted onset of the marine fish event horizon. Humans play an integral role in biological invasions, from aiding introductions of alien species to experiencing their impacts and holding the ability to manage them. The importance of understanding the dynamics of stakeholders' perceptions on alien species is therefore increasingly recognized. In this study, we used anonymous online surveys to contrast recreational anglers' perceptions towards European flounder (Platichthys flesus, Linnaeus, 1758) in Iceland, where it is classified as a potentially invasive species, to the perceptions prevailing amongst recreational anglers in the species' native range. We furthermore explored potential temporal changes in the perception of Icelandic recreational anglers. Our results indicate that Icelandic recreational anglers have a highly negative perception towards the European flounder, while in its native range, recreational anglers have positive perceptions towards this species. In Iceland, we have furthermore detected a significant change towards less negative perceptions between the surveys administered in October 2019 and March 2023. Finally, we compared the results of the online surveys and novel, conservation culturomics tools to further explore stakeholder perceptions and public interest in Iceland. The comparison highlighted some limitations that should be considered when using culturomics in very small societies or for small languages. For example, the text mining approaches on newspaper articles and social media conservations detected neutral perceptions in the communication to the public and within the targeted stakeholder group via social media in contrary to the perceptions detected in the online surveys. Moreover, we detected short-term peaks in the public's interest in European flounder and potential drivers of those peaks using Wikipedia pageviews but Google Trends provided mixed and unreproducible results. Overall, our study highlights that stakeholders' perceptions towards an alien species as well as the public's interest in it vary over time and space, though the drivers of these changes are often difficult to identify. Pleuronectes chrysopterus Bloch and Schneider 1801 has previously been regarded as a putative junior synonym of Pseudorhombus arsius (Hamilton 1822) (Paralichthyidae). However, the holotype of the former was found to conform to the right-eye flounder genus Platichthys Girard 1854 (Pleuronectidae), and be most similar to the European flounder Platichthys flesus (Linnaeus 1758) and Baltic flounder Platichthys solemdali Momigliano, Denys, Jokinen and Merilä 2018 in having rough scales with bony tubercles distributed along the anterior portion of the body and along the dorsal- and anal-fin bases, exposed cycloid scales entirely covering the body, and 64 dorsal- and 44 anal-fin rays. Such a character combination set the holotype specimen apart from two northwestern Pacific congeners of Platichthys, which suggests that the originally stated type locality "Chinese sea" of Pleuronecteschrysopterus, may have been erroneous. Furthermore, the holotype has an unusually high number of pored lateral-line scales compared with all other species of Platichthys (123 vs. 60–90), possibly indicating that the holotype is a morphologically abnormal individual of a species of Platichthys or a hybrid individual of a species of Platichthys and another pleuronectid species in a different genus, with a high number of pored lateral-line scales. Competition arises when species share a limited resource, but this can be avoided through niche partitioning. Despite the large body of literature on diadromous fishes, very few studies have focused on niche partitioning when competing for resources. Diadromous fishes are suffering a global decline throughout their range in part due to their peculiar life history traits as they migrate from the sea to freshwater to spawn or the reverse. They are particularly sensitive to river fragmentation induced by barriers. Dams for instance are expected to alter the spatial distribution and resource exploitation of diadromous fishes as well as other organisms. Here, we studied the ecological niche of six taxa of diadromous fishes, temporally co-occurring in the same land-sea continuum obstructed by two river dams. We used Bayesian mixing models run on C and N isotopes to infer the various habitats used and the origin of the trophic carbon in muscle and scale tissues of diadromous fishes. Results showed that the sub-adults of Anguilla anguilla, juveniles of Petromyzon marinus, and Salmo trutta exploit mainly the freshwater, or marine part for adults of Lampetra fluviatilis, whereas juveniles of Platichthys flesus and Mugilidae use all the habitats of the land-sea continuum. In the freshwater habitat, the microphytobenthos and biofilm are the main sources of carbon used, while in the marine habitat, the basal carbon sources are more diverse. The analyses of niche overlaps between diadromous fishes demonstrate that the widest isotopic niches, observed for A. anguilla and P. flesus, also have more impact within the community. Simple Summary: In order to reliably record pollution from microplastics within animals, indicators for a monitoring program must be found. For this purpose, we collected invertebrates, fish, and sediment cores at 10 sites along the Wadden Sea coast of Lower Saxony, Germany; determined the amount of microplastics; and made recommendations for potential bioindicator species, based on the sampling conditions and results. The species studied included lugworm (Arenicola marina), common periwinkle (Littorina littorea), blue mussel (Mytilus edulis), and European flounder (Platichthys flesus). In total, microplastics were detected in 88% of the specimens and in each sediment core sample. Regarding the polymer composition, eight different types of microplastic were identified. Based on the results, the species blue mussel and European flounder are recommended for microplastic monitoring in biota. Monitoring strategies are becoming increasingly important as microplastic contamination increases. To find potentially suitable organisms and sites for biota monitoring in the German Wadden Sea, we collected invertebrates (n = 1585), fish (n = 310), and sediment cores (n = 12) at 10 sites along the coast of Lower Saxony between 2018 and 2020. For sample processing of biota, the soft tissue was digested and the sediment samples additionally underwent a subsequent density separation step. Microplastic particles were identified using Nile red and fluorescence microscopy, followed by polymer composition analysis of a subset of particles via µRaman spectroscopy. All investigated species, sediment cores, and sites contained microplastics, predominantly in the morphology class of fragments. Microplastics were found in 92% of Arenicola marina, 94% of Littorina littorea, 85% of Mytilus edulis, and 79% of Platichthys flesus, ranging from 0 to 248.1 items/g. Sediment core samples contained MPs ranging from 0 to 8128 part/kg dry weight of sediment. In total, eight polymers were identified, predominantly consisting of polyethylene, polyvinylchloride, and polyethylene terephthalate. Moreover, we aimed to verify whether the observed decline in the body condition indices of the species in the Baltic Sea might be associated with adaptive changes in its gene pool due to increased fishing pressure. The examined European flounder specimens displayed a high level of genetic diversity and represented a single genetic cluster. The applied molecular markers did not detect the presence of the Baltic flounder among the fish sampled from the studied area. Correlation analysis between genetic and morphological characteristics did not detect any signs of directional selection or density-dependent adaptive changes in the gene pool of the examined fish. According to the available data from the Polish Fisheries Monitoring Center and fishermen's observations, the body condition indices of the species in the Baltic Sea have declined in recent years. The aim of the present study was to obtain information on the current patterns of genetic variability and the population structure of the European flounder and to verify whether the Baltic flounder is present in the southern Baltic Sea. Moreover, we aimed to verify whether the observed decline in the body condition indices of the species in the Baltic Sea might be associated with adaptive alterations in its gene pool due to increased fishing pressure. For this purpose, 190 fish were collected from four locations along the central coastline of Poland, i.e., Mechelinki, Władysławowo, the Vistula Lagoon in 2018, and the Słupsk Bank in 2020. The fish were morphologically analyzed and then genetically screened by the application of nineteen microsatellite DNA and two diagnostic SNP markers. The examined European flounder specimens displayed a high level of genetic diversity (PIC = 0.832–0.903, I = 2.579–2.768). A lack of significant genetic differentiation (Fst = 0.004, p > 0.05) was observed in all the examined fish, indicating that the European flounder in the sampled area constitutes a single genetic cluster. A significant deficiency in heterozygotes (Fis = 0.093, p < 0.05) and overall deviations from Hardy–Weinberg expectations (H-WE) were only detected in fish sampled from the Słupsk Bank. The estimated effective population size (Ne) among the sampled fish groups varied from 712 (Słupsk Bank) to 10,115 (Władysławowo and Mechelinki). However, the recorded values of the Garza–Williamson indicator (M = 0.574–0.600) and the lack of significant (p > 0.05) differences in Heq > He under the SMM model did not support the species' population size changes in the past. The applied SNP markers did not detect the presence of the Baltic flounder among the fish sampled from the studied area. The analysis of an association between biological traits and patterns of genetic diversity did not detect any signs of directional selection or density-dependent adaptive changes in the gene pool of the examined fish that might be caused by increased fishing pressure. IntroductionMany diadromous fish species are currently facing the threat of generalized population extirpations across their range, and conservation efforts implemented primarily within the continental domain may not be sufficient to ensure their viability. In consequence, better understanding the use of the marine environment by these species turned out to be critical.Material and methodWe developed marine species distribution models for two species, Allis shad (Alosa alosa) and the European flounder (Platichthys flesus), and proposed a way to interpret the habitat suitability from a more functional perspective. Our approach defined marine habitats as highly suitable environments that remained with a high potential through the species life stage duration at sea. First, a species-specific probabilistic threshold was applied to select for highly suitable environments each year of the simulations. Then, annual maps of high suitability were combined into recurrence maps showing areas were the environmental conditions remained the most suitable across the life at sea of the given species, these areas being called ‘marine habitats’. We applied this approach to study the current and future marine habitats of Allis shad and European flounder under climate change scenarios.ResultsThe main current marine habitats of these species were coastal, primarily in the Bay of Biscay for Allis shad and in the English Channel-North Sea for European flounder. These habitats are expected to experience minimal changes by mid-century, and the species may even benefit from new habitats at higher latitudes. However, the European flounder is likely to face greater challenges in the central part of its range by the end of the century, as potential spawning grounds may be threatened.DiscussionThis study provided a way to rethink ‘traditional’ suitability maps by integrating basic knowledge on the diadromous species life at sea. Our findings were part of a larger effort to link continental and marine habitats in improving management of diadromous species.

Early life phenology is a crucial factor for population dynamics in a climate change scenario. As such, understanding how the early life cycle of marine fishes is influenced by key oceanic and climate drivers is of chief importance for sustainable fisheries. This study documents interannual changes in early life phenology of two commercial flatfishes: European flounder (Platichthys flesus) and common sole (Solea solea) from 2010 to 2015 based on otolith microstructure. Using GAMs, we looked for correlations of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Eastern Atlantic pattern (EA), sea surface temperature (SST), chlorophyl a concentration (Chla) and upwelling (Ui) variation with the onset of hatch, metamorphosis, and benthic settlement day. We concluded that higher SST, more intensive upwelling, and EA were coincident with a later the onset of each stage, while increasing NAO induces an earlier onset of each stage. Although similar to S. solea, P. flesus showed a more complex interaction with the environmental drivers, most possibly because it is at its southern limit of its distribution. Our results highlight the complexity of the relationship between climate conditions and fish early life history, particularly those with complex life cycles that include migrations between coastal areas and estuaries. Watersheds and estuaries are impacted by multiple anthropogenic stressors that affect their biodiversity and functioning. Assessing their ecological quality has consequently remained challenging for scientists and stakeholders. In this paper, we propose a multidisciplinary approach to identify the stressors in seven small French estuaries located in agricultural watersheds. We collected data from landscape (geography, hydrobiology) to estuary (pollutant chemistry) and fish individual scales (environmental signatures, proteomics). This integrative approach focused on the whole hydrosystems, from river basins to estuaries. To characterize each watershed, we attempted to determine the land use considering geographic indicators (agricultural and urbanised surfaces) and landscape patterns (hedges density and riparian vegetation). Juveniles of European flounder (Platichthys flesus) were captured in September, after an average residence of five summer months in the estuary. Analyses of water, sediments and biota allowed to determine the concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen species, pesticides and trace elements in the systems. Environmental signatures were also measured in flounder tissues. These environmental parameters were used to establish a typology of the watersheds. Furthermore, data from proteomics on fish liver were combined with environmental signatures to determine the responses of fish to stressors in their environments. Differential protein abundances highlighted a dysregulation related to the detoxification of xenobiotics (mainly pesticides) in agricultural watersheds, characterized by intensive cereal and vegetable crops and high livestock. Omics also revealed a dysregulation of proteins associated with the response to hypoxia and heat stress in some estuaries. Furthermore, we highlighted a dysregulation of proteins involved in urea cycle, immunity and metabolism of fatty acids in several systems. Finally, the combination of environmental and molecular signatures appears to be a relevant method to identify the major stressors operating within hydrosystems. The classic melatonin biosynthesis pathway (Mel; N -acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) involves two consecutive enzymatic steps that are decisive in hormone production: conversion of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) to N -acetylserotonin (NAS) and the methylation of the last compound to Mel. This pathway requires the activity of the enzymes: the first is of the category of N -acetyltransferases (AANAT, SNAT, or NAT) and the second is N -acetylserotonin O -methyltransferase (ASMT; also known as HIOMT). However, quite recently, new information has been provided on the possibility of an alternative Mel synthesis pathway; it would include a two-step action by these enzymes, but in reverse order, where ASMT (or ASMTL, the enzyme related to ASMT) methylates 5-HT to 5-methoxytryptamine (5-MT), and then the last compound is acetylated by an enzyme of the category of N -acetyltransferases to Mel. In our study on the activity of enzymes in the Mel biosynthesis pathway in flounder skin, we have found an increase in 5-MT level, as a result of the increase in 5-HT concentration, which is followed by a growing concentration of Mel. However, we have not found any increase in Mel concentration, despite an increase in NAS in the samples. Our data strongly suggest an alternative way of Mel production in flounder skin in which 5-HT is first methylated to 5-MT, which is then acetylated to Mel. Transitional environments have great ecological value and high productivity, and many species can benefit from their sheltered conditions and food resources. In this study, we performed for the first time a fish-targeted eDNA metabarcoding of the 12S rRNA gene at 16 sites broadly covering the different water bodies of the Marano and Grado Lagoon (northern Adriatic Sea) in two seasons. The eDNA was collected at the same time as the beach seine net, allowing a direct comparison of the two approaches. With eDNA we detected 34 species, covering all the functional guilds occurring in the lagoon. Species of regional interest, that uses the area as a nursery and feeding ground, and diadromous species, highlighting the ecological connectivity between freshwater and marine habitats, were found. While some species were constantly present (e.g. Atherina boyeri, Sparus aurata), others (Squalius cephalus, Platichthys flesus) were influenced by salinity (higher in Grado and lower in Marano), which was confirmed as the main ecological driver in this environment. The comparison with traditional methods, which identified 18 species (11 of which were detected with both approaches), showed that eDNA is very sensitive in detecting most of the biodiversity in the lagoon with a limited sampling effort. Few relevant species (Chelon saliens , Knipowitschia panizzae) lacked reference sequences, which need to be implemented in the databases. Grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) in the Baltic Sea commonly attempt to steal fish captured in net fisheries. Seal depredation reduces economic yields for small-scale net fishers in a region already highly impacted by the collapse of important fish stocks. Visible damages in looted nets consist of injured fish with bite marks, or holes in the gear, but additional losses from seals eating entire fish without leaving a trace can often remain unnoticed. In this study, we estimated the daily rates of injured and of stolen fish in a commercial gillnet fishery operating off coast of Bornholm in the Central Baltic Sea in 2021–2022. Our results show that the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) is generally preferred over other target species [here, European plaice (Pleuronectes platessa), European flounder (Platichthys flesus), and turbot (Scophthalmus maximus)]. Although the observed ratio of 5.65 cods disappearing for each cod retrieved with seal bite marks is similar to a study from the 2000's, we show that average daily cod disappearance rates are linked to the duration a gear is left soaking in the same location. • About 45 % of cod (Gadus morhua) and 6 % of flatfish gillnet catches are stolen daily by grey seal in the Central Baltic Sea. • Grey Seal depredation amounts to 5.65 entire cods disappearing without a trace for each injured cod recovered in the net. • Daily depredation rate of cods increases the longer the gear is left soaking in the same location, while it is relatively stable over time for flatfish. This study aims to characterize and compare the feeding ecology of the European eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) during the continental phase (i.e. yellow and silver) along a salinity gradient (i.e. lower, middle and upper) in six northern France estuaries (i.e. brackish water). The diet and stable isotopic (i.e. δ15N and δ13C values) compositions of eels collected with a fyke net in six estuaries (Slack, Wimereux, Liane, Canche, Authie and Somme estuaries) located along the French coast of the eastern English Channel per season over a year were described by combining gut content and stable isotope analyses. Eel guts were dominated by typical BW prey, Malacostraca and Actinopterygii (54% and 40%, respectively), with the gammare Gammarus zaddachi and the green crab Carcinus maenas (38% and 14%, respectively), and smaller yellow eels of A. anguilla and juvenile European flounder, Platichthys flesus (19% and 14%, respectively) being the most frequently found in their guts. The δ13C values of a majority of eels confirmed the sea- and brackish water-specific carbon resources. Dietary and isotopic niche revealed no clear change between total length, silvering stages and seasons, but a significant difference between salinity gradients and estuaries. Eels δ13C values showed significant enrichment from upper to lower along the estuaries while the δ15N values showed an inverse effect, with the lowest values in the lower part and highest in the upper part. Higher variability in δ13C values in larger estuaries suggested that eels feed on a wide range of food sources than in smaller estuaries. While eels in the smaller estuaries fed mainly on Actinopterygii prey, eels in the larger ones had a lower trophic level (i.e. δ15N values) and fed mainly on Malacostraca prey. This study represents the first attempt to assess genotoxicity and cytotoxicity effects in herring (Clupea harengus membras), flounder (Platichthys flesus), and cod (Gadus morhua callarias) caught at 47 study stations, located close to chemical munition dumpsites in the Gotland Basin, the Baltic Sea. Herring sampled from stations located in the center of chemical munition dumpsites exhibited the highest levels of micronuclei (MN) and total genotoxicity (ΣGentox), which is defined as the sum of frequencies of such nuclear abnormalities as micronuclei, nuclear buds, nuclear buds on the filament, and bi-nucleated erythrocytes with nucleoplasmic bridges. Exceptionally high and high ΣGentox risks were determined for flounder (89.47%), herring (79.31%), and cod (50%) caught at the stations located close to the chemical munition dumpsites. The Aral Sea was one of the main commercial basins until the 80s of the last century. However, intensive water management activities aimed at regulating the upper reaches of the Syrdarya and Amudarya rivers, which were the main sources of water supply in the Aral Sea, led to a decrease in the water level and the sea was initially divided into two reservoirs: Small and Large. As a result, huge damage was caused to the fishing industry of the region. And only after more than 20 years, a decision was made to restore the Aral Sea, by building a dam, in order to block the channel connecting the Small Aral with the Big Sea. In 2005, the construction of the Kokaral separation dam was completed. The basis of the fishery is: bream (Abramis brama), zander (Sander lucioperca), pike (Esox lucius), asp (Aspius aspius), carp (Cprinus caspio), crucian carp (Carasius auratus), roach (Rutilus rutilus), sabrefish (Pelecus cultratus), rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus). The fewly presented species include silver carp (Hypopthalmichthyx molitrix), snakehead (Channa argus), ide (Leuciscus idus), white-eyed bream (Ballerus sapa), perch (Perca fluvatilis). Flounder glossa (Platichthys flesus), catfish (Silurus glanis), shemaya (Alburnus chalcoides) that are found in catches. According to the research of the current year, the commercial fishes in Small Aral Sea was represented by 16 species of fish, of which 9 species (Abramis brama, Cprinus caspio, Aspius aspius, Esox lucius, Silurus glanis, Sander lucioperca, Rutilus rutilus, Channa argus, Pelecus cultratus) form the basis of the fishery, 6 species (Ctenopharyngodon idella, Carasius auratus, Ballerus sapa, Chalcalburnus chalcoides, Leuciscus idus, Hypopthalmichthyx molitrix) are few and 1 species (Platichthys flesus) of fish are isolated in catches. Human‐generated pressures are continuing to have a detrimental effect on diadromous fishes, resulting in legislative initiatives to conserve and manage these species. Field studies to inform these initiatives focus almost exclusively on larger marine, estuarine, and inland waters, neglecting the role of small coastal streams and tributaries in population recovery. As an example of the potential contribution of very small coastal streams to diadromous fish recruitment, we report here on the densities and distribution of European eel Anguilla anguilla L. and flounder Platichthys flesus (L.) in one such stream, "La Warenne," in northeast France in October 1998 and 1999. Both species were found mainly in downstream sites in both years—flounder were captured in low numbers only, but mean CPUE values for eel were similar to the highest densities reported in the ICES WGEEL database for larger rivers of Great Britain, France and Spain in the Interreg Atlantic and North Sea areas. This small dataset illustrates that small coastal streams may represent an important, but overlooked, role in conservation strategies for European eel, and possibly flounder, indicating the need for further field studies and investigations of existing data sources to evaluate the contributions to diadromous fish recruitment of these poorly studied water courses. Fifteen non-indigenous species have been recorded in Icelandic waters over the past decades, of which six have been classified as invasive or potentially invasive. One of these potentially invasive species is the European flounder (Platichthys flesus). Platichthys flesus is a recent arrival that was firstly identified in 1999 and has, since then, established a population around the whole country. In this study we evaluated if there is niche overlap between juvenile P. flesus and native juvenile European plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) on nursery grounds at three sites in west Iceland. Considering the presumed clockwise spread of P. flesus' population around the country, the southernmost site, Borgarfjörður, was treated as the site of earlier settlement of P. flesus. Similarly, the northernmost site, Önundarfjörður, was treated as the site of later settlement. We used stomach content and stable isotope analyses to examine if there was a significant niche overlap between P. flesus and P. platessa and to examine if the extent of niche overlap varied between sites. Multiple cohorts of P. flesus and native P. platessa were present at all sites and there was high niche overlap between species with no indication of trophic niche segregation nor change with time from establishment of P. flesus. The current study has shown the cooccurrence and niche overlap of non-indigenous P. flesus and native P. platessa on nursery grounds in Iceland and highlighted the establishment of P. flesus in Iceland as a rare case study to investigate colonisation processes of non-indigenous fish species in sub-arctic marine environments. The objective of this study was to develop an integrative approach in ecotoxicology (from biomarkers to population genetics) to assess the ecological status of fish populations. Flounders (Platichthys flesus) collected after the spawning season in the heavily polluted Seine estuary were compared with the moderately polluted Bay of Douarnenez. The muscle energetic reserves were highly depleted in Seine vs. Douarnenez fish. The Seine fish displaying a reduced capacity to manage the oxidative stress and a higher energetic metabolism. An increase in the content of muscle membrane phospholipids (sphingomyelin, phosphatidylserine, free sterols) was detected in the Seine vs. Douarnenez fish. The data integration allowed to hypothesize relationships between membrane phospholipids, xenobiotic metabolism, bioenergetics, and antioxidant defence. The genetic diversity considering neutral markers was maintained in the heavily polluted Seine population compared with the Douarnenez population. Finally, we suggest that the high physiological cost of tolerance to toxicants in the Seine flounder population could compromise its capacity to respond in the future to an additional stressor like warming waters in shallow depth. Understanding the influence of man-made infrastructures on fish population dynamics is an important issue for fisheries management. This is particularly the case because of the steady proliferation of offshore wind farms (OWFs). Several flatfish species are likely to be affected because areas with OWFs in place or planned for show a spatial overlap with their spawning grounds. This study focuses on six commercially important flatfish species in the North Sea: common sole (Solea solea), European plaice (Pleuronectes platessa), turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), brill (Scophtalmus rhombus), European flounder (Platichthys flesus), and common dab (Limanda limanda). We used a particle-tracking model (Larvae&Co) coupled to a 3D hydrodynamic model to assess the effects of spatial overlap of OWFs with the species' spawning grounds on the larval fluxes to known nursery grounds. An important overlap between planned areas of OWFs and flatfish spawning grounds was detected, with a resulting proportion of settlers originating from those areas varying from 2% to 16%. Our study suggests that European plaice, common dab, and brill could be the most affected flatfish species, yet with some important local disparities across the North Sea. Estuaries serve as nursery grounds for many marine fish species. However, increasing human activities within estuaries and surrounding areas lead to significant habitat quality degradation for the juveniles. In recent years, plastic pollution has become a global environmental issue as plastic debris are found in all aquatic environments with potential adverse impacts on marine biota. Given the important ecological role of estuaries and implications of microplastics (MP) in ecosystems, here we assess the occurrence, number, size, and polymer types of MP ingested by wild and caged juvenile European flounder (Platichthys flesus). We deployed caged fish for 1 month at five sites in three estuaries in the eastern English Channel. The Seine estuary, heavily impacted by manmade modifications and one of the most contaminated estuaries in Europe, was compared to two smaller estuaries (Canche and Liane) less impacted by industrial activities. We found that juvenile flounders (7–9 cm) were vulnerable to plastic ingestion. Seventy-five percent of caged fish and 58% of wild caught fish had the presence of MP items in their digestive tract. Fibers (69%) dominated in the fish's digestive tract at all sites. An average of 2.04 ± 1.93 MP items were ingested by feral juvenile flounder and 1.67 ± 1.43 by caged juvenile flounder. For the caged fish, the three sites impacted by wastewater treatment plant (Liane, Le Havre harbor, and Rouen) were those with the highest percentage of individuals that has ingested MP items. Most of the isolated items were fibers and blue in color. Polymers identified by micro Raman spectroscopy were polycaprolactam, polyethylene terephthalate, and polyurethane. Although other environmental factors may have affected caged fish condition and mortality, we found no significant correlation with the number of ingested MP. However, the high occurrence of MP ingested by juvenile fish on nursery grounds raises concerns on their potential negative effects for fish recruitment success and population renewal. Despite the popularity of stable isotope analysis (Carbon and Nitrogen), the drivers of species isotopic niches and their consequences on food web functioning remained poorly described, especially in estuaries. Here, we hypothesised that species niche characteristics are influenced by ecosystem hydro-morphological features and the functional structure of fish assemblages. The trophic niches of four fish species (Dicentrarchus labrax, Pomatoschistus minutus, Sprattus and Platichthys flesus) and overlap between them were compared during two consecutive autumns in eight estuarine ecosystems of the northeast Atlantic Ocean. Our findings demonstrated a relative steadiness of trophic positions of fish in estuaries, despite a high level of interspecific variability. The seabass generally occupied the higher trophic position, followed by the sand goby, while the flounder and sprat were at the lowest position in the food web. Species isotopic niches and overlap were mediated by some estuarine features, including estuary size and intertidal extent, but also by biotic interactions at the intra- and inter-specific levels, as reflected by the influence of fish abundance and functional diversity metrics. Our results support the statement that the intertidal area is a pivotal factor in regulating trophic interactions, by promoting niche partitioning and diversification of trophic resources between species. Moreover, niche size and dietary divergence of species decreased with increasing regularity of trophic strategies within assemblages, suggesting that species occupied more restricted trophic niches when they were less subjected to competition for the same food resources. Understanding the skeletal development and deformations for aquaculture candidate fish species is vital for successful aquaculture practices. Developmental abnormalities at early life stages may reduce fish viability, growth, and wellbeing. This study was carried out to investigate the skeletal ontogeny and skeletal deformities of the European flounder (Platichthys flesus) at early life stage. Artificially produced European flounder larvae (n = 270) were randomly selected at a regular interval (30 fish at each sampling) from hatching to 50 days post-hatch (dph) and their skeletal ontogeny and skeletal deformations were evaluated by using bone and cartilage staining techniques. The average length of fish was 2.71 ± 0.04 mm at 0 dph and reached 19.76 ± 1.7 mm at 50 dph. The notochord began to form at 10 dph and finished flexion at 30 dph. Hypural rays appeared between 10 and 15 dph, followed by appearance of tail fin rays. Urostyle developed at 30 dph and began to ossify at 40 dph. Meristic characters showed an interspecific variation. At least one type of deformation was observed on 23.3% of larvae, and a total of 13 different deformations were identified. The most common deformation was the deformed vertebra which was observed 13 times followed by deformed dorsal fin ray, deformed caudal fin ray, and deformed neural arch and/or spine. For many fishes, their early life stages are transported (passively) by currents between spawning areas and coastal nurseries, but also potential dispersal towards new habitats. Therefore, species have developed strategies to enhance the recruitment success, including the selection of appropriate spawning grounds. However, increased temperature due to climate change may lead to changes in hydrodynamics, shorter larval drifts, and earlier spawning, and consequently the location of the most suitable spawning grounds may change. We investigated whether the location of the most favourable spawning areas (allowing higher rates of larvae reaching coastal nurseries) was stable over time, and if differences could be found between environmentally contrasted years. We used a larval drift model taking into account hydrodynamics, larval characteristics and behaviour for three commercially exploited fish species (sole Solea solea , flounder Platichthys flesus and seabass Dicentrarchus labrax) in the Western Europe (encompassing the Bay of Biscay, the Celtic Sea and the English Channel). According to our model, we conclude that despite contrasting environmental conditions, the location of spawning grounds allowing the best chance of recruitment to nurseries for the offspring was fairly similar. However, even if the location of the main spawning grounds is stable over time, their relative effectiveness varies greatly between years. This would suggest that natural selection may favour the emergence of homing behaviour. This stability in this fish essential habitat location could facilitate protection measures. Going further, it could be interesting to study the variations occurring in spawning grounds (in terms of recruitment success, and retention/dispersion) during the course of a spawning season. The data on the seasonal dynamics of biological indicators of European flounder are presented for the central part of the Kola Bay for the year of 2018. In particular, the size-age and population sexual structure, feeding, and distribution density of European flounder were considered. The constants of the power equation of the dependence of the fish body weight on its length were obtained, the peculiarities of the fish growth were revealed. Recent years have brought the realization that evolutionary changes driven by selection can occur in ecological time scales. However, recent evolutionary events can be hard to detect and may easily go unnoticed. For harvested species, such cryptic diversity may lead to suboptimal management. These points are illustrated by the two flounder species in the Baltic Sea. Although early ecological studies identified two ecotypes of European flounder (Platichthys flesus) based on spawning differences, genomic studies only recently demonstrated that they were reproductively isolated species, P. flesus and P. solemdali , separated through rapid ecologically driven speciation. These morphologically indistinguishable species are harvested within a mixed-stock fishery. In the northern Baltic Sea flounder landings have declined since the mid-1980s, with a drop in the Gulf of Finland (GoF) being particularly dramatic (∼90%). Genetic analyses of historical otolith samples from GoF catches have revealed that back in 1983 the fishery unknowingly targeted primarily P. flesus , whereas thereafter almost exclusively P. solemdali. Hence, the case of two flounder species illustrates (i) how ecological studies stimulated genetic investigations leading to discovery of ecological speciation and (ii) how cryptic species turnover discovered with genetic tools in turn improved ecological understanding with benefits to management and conservation. The research focuses mainly on the ichthyoplankton of the Baltic deeps – the inflow route from the North Sea. The ichthyoplankton was represented by eggs and larvae of nine fish species: sprat, cod, herring, European flounder, fourbeard rockling, longspined bullhead, straightnose pipefish, sand goby and great sandeel. The species composition of ichthyoplankton varied depending on the location of a given site – the number of taxa ranged from one to five. The Slupsk Furrow was the most diversified area in terms of the number of taxa, while the highest abundance of ichthyoplankton occurred in the Bornholm Basin. The sprat clearly dominated and inhabited all the surveyed depths. Of the remaining species, only cod eggs as well as eggs and larvae of the fourbeard rockling significantly contributed to this formation. They occurred within their main spawning grounds (Bornholm Deep in the near-bottom layers) and secondary spawning grounds (Slupsk Furrow and Gdansk Deep) where salinity and oxygenation of water favored their development. For flatfishes, transportation of larvae to nursery areas is regarded a key mechanism for recruitment, with adaptations in larval behaviour to reach a suitable habitat. Here we model different possibilities of larval drifting of coastal spawning Baltic flounder Platichthys solemdali (recently identified as a species from European flounder P. flesus) to reveal opportunities for local retention vs large-scale dispersal to ensure settling in coastal nursery areas. Drifting depth, duration of drifting and effects of year and time during season were modelled using 1) a high-resolution local dispersal model, and 2) a large-scale connectivity database. The outcome revealed drifting depth as a major factor affecting larval dispersal. Drift at 10–22 m depth involved retention along the coast with the majority of larvae (≥94% or 69–93% according to 1 and 2, respectively) with end points ≤20 km from the coast enabling further successful migration to nursery habitats. Contrary, larval drift close to the surface resulted in advection with end points in the open sea (72–76%), i.e. loss of larvae, but with a small fraction (5–12%) displaying cross-basin connectivity. The results suggest, in agreement with depth distribution of spawning, a larval behaviour promoting drift in the lower part of the water mass, favouring retention close to coastal nursery areas. Obtained dispersal patterns may sustain both local recruitment but also connectivity with other areas, potentially explaining the low genetic diversity between areas for P. solemdali. Low inter-annual variability in dispersal patterns when drifting at 10–22 m depth suggests that larval drift is not a major bottleneck explaining recruitment variability in P. solemdali in the area. The study highlights the differences in life-history strategies of the species pair of flounder in the Baltic Sea; P. flesus spawning in the deep basins with extensive larval dispersal, and coastal spawning P. solemdali with, according to the model outcome, mainly local larval dispersal for sustaining a viable population, i.e. request for different management strategies. Otoliths are bony structures inside the fish labyrinth. They are used to determine the age of fish and to identify species based on their remains. The objective of this study was to describe the shape of otoliths in adult European perch (Perca fluviatilis), Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus), European sprat (Sprattus sprattus), lesser sand eel (Ammodytes tobianus), great sand eel (Hyperoplus lanceolatus), round goby (Neogobius melanostomus), European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus), Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), European eel (Anguilla anguilla), viviparous eelpout (Zoarces viviparus), turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), European flounder (Platichthys flesus), European plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) and European smelt (Osmerus eperlanus). Fish were caught in the Gulf of Gdańsk. The relationships between the size of otoliths and the length of fish were established for adult European perch, European flounder, Atlantic herring and round goby. Otoliths of taxonomically related species were similar. It was not possible to differentiate otoliths of Ammodytidae, Pleuronectidae, Scophthalamidae, Anguilidae by comparing the presented results with the literature data. Otoliths of Zoarcidae, Osmeridae, Clupeidae, Gadidae, Gobiidae, Percidae and Salmonidae were quite similar but distinguishable. In most of the investigated species, otoliths grow proportionally to the fish size. Their shape does not change during the fish life. The shape of otoliths in the round goby changes significantly. The caudal neurosecretory system (CNSS) is a part of stress response system, a neuroendocrine structure unique to fish. To gain a better understanding of the physiological roles of CNSS in fluid homeostasis, we characterized the tissue distribution of urotensin I (UI) expression in European flounder (Platichthys flesus), analyzed the effect chronic exposure to seawater (SW) or freshwater (FW), transfer from SW to FW, and reverse transfer on mRNA levels of UI, L-type Ca2+ channels and Ca-activated K+ channels transcripts in CNSS. The tissue distribution demonstrated that the CNSS is dominant sites of UI expression, and UI mRNA level in fore brain appeared greater than other non-CNSS tissues. There were no consistent differences in CNSS UI expression or urophysis UI content between SW- and FW-adapted fish in July and September. After transfer from SW to FW, at 8 h CNSS UI expression was significantly increased, but urophysis UI content was no significantly changes. At 24 h transfer from SW to FW, expression of CNSS UI was no apparent change and urophysis UI content was reduced. At 8 h and 24 h after transfer from FW to SW UI expression and urophysis UI content was no significantly effect. The expression of bursting dependent L-type Ca2+ channels and Ca-activated K+ channels in SW-adapted fish significantly decreased compared to those in FW-adapted. However, there were no differences in transfer from SW to FW or from FW to SW at 8 h and 24 h. Abstract Connectivity between juvenile habitats and adult stocks is important for determining the resilience of local fisheries and the relative contribution of different juvenile habitat areas to adult populations. Otolith chemistry is commonly employed to differentiate between individuals from different juvenile habitat areas; whereby different environmental exposures, mediated by intrinsic physiological processes, produce different trace element concentrations in the biologically inert otolith. This study aims to determine if otolith chemistry can differentiate between juveniles of hybridising con-familials where they are found in the same habitat and to establish if otolith chemistry can effectively re-assign individuals to contiguous coastal juvenile habitat areas of the inner Danish waters (IDW). Sympatric pairs of juvenile European plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) and flounder (Platichthys flesus) caught together in a juvenile beam trawl survey, in areas where the two species hybridise, were used to address the first aim. Juvenile plaice and common sole (Solea solea) caught during the same survey were used to determine if otolith chemistry can correctly re-assign individuals back to contiguous coastal juvenile habitat areas. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (LA-ICPMS) was used to analyse the trace elements in edge spots of juvenile otoliths and Canonical Analysis of Principal Coordinates was employed to test the reassignment of individuals back to correct species or area. Using a suite of eight trace elements, ∼72% of individual plaice (∼70%) and flounder (∼73%) were correctly identified. Greater than two-thirds (∼67%) of plaice were correctly re-allocated to four juvenile habitat areas and close to four out of five (∼79%) individual sole were correctly re-allocated to three juvenile habitat areas. These results indicate that the hybridising con-familial plaice and flounder of the IDW warrant further attention and could be a valuable model system to assess how intrinsic and extrinsic factors influence elemental incorporation. Furthermore, this study shows otolith chemistry is a valuable tool for tracing marine fish back to juvenile habitat areas, even where they are found along contiguous coastal areas. Abstract The study explores the fine scale spatial and temporal distribution of the entire demersal fish and flatfish assemblages in a brackish ecosystem with a special focus on the abiotic and biotic drivers influencing the abundance of the three commercially and ecologically important flatfish species, namely flounder (Platichthys flesus), plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) and dab (Limanda limanda). Using a 12 year time series obtained by a summer survey in the western Baltic Sea, at least three distinct demersal fish species assemblages were identified. Their spatial distribution was relatively stable over time and could be linked to environmental gradients. The demersal fish assemblages were dominated by few species and differed primarily in the percentage of common species. Both, the demersal and the flatfish assemblage were structured according to different habitat preferences. While there were species-specific differences, boosted regression tree modelling (BRT) showed that interannual fluctuations explained a large percentage of the variance in flatfish abundance whereby salinity, water temperature and sediment type were identified as the most important abiotic drivers. Dab was mainly influenced by sediment type and high salinity, while for flounder the main driver was water temperature. Plaice was also impacted by salinity, but was primarily influenced by biotic variables. The availability of benthic prey organisms in the area was verified as biotic driver for flatfish, especially for plaice. The results underline the importance of accounting for fine scale spatial heterogeneity in marine spatial planning in the Baltic Sea and comparable brackish water ecosystems and highlight the importance of considering benthic prey availability and diet analyses in demersal fish monitoring programs. Connectivity and dispersal are important factors for ecosystem dynamics, conservation, and resource management. Dispersal and recruitment success are determined in early life for many marine species. For those larvae that are pelagic, transport from spawning to nursery grounds is driven by hydrodynamic processes. Other environmental factors such as temperature and biological factors such as ecophysiology, behavior, and reproductive strategy (spawning period and spawning grounds) influence the final dispersal pattern and larval survival. We utilized a Lagrangian particle tracking model coupled with a three‐dimensional hydrodynamic model (Larvae&Co) to assess the connectivity patterns between spawning and nursery grounds of six commercially exploited flatfish species in the North Sea over a 10‐yr period (1997–2006). Standardized analyses have highlighted how spawning and nursery grounds are connected under the combined pressure of environment and life‐history traits. Results showed that the six flatfishes can be divided in two groups, each with their specific connectivity patterns. Turbot, common sole, and brill live in two subpopulations in the North Sea; common dab, European flounder, and European plaice represent a single mixed population. In general, the modeled and genetic patterns match, hence showing the strong impact of larval connectivity. The large overlap in connectivity for species that spawn during the same period and the seasonal change in hydrodynamics highlight the strong impact of a summer front in larval dispersal. Eight nuclear abnormalities of genotoxicity and cytotoxicity were studied in peripheral blood erythrocytes of herring (Clupea harengus membras), flounder (Platichthys flesus), and Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) sampled (2010–2017) from the Polish and the Lithuanian Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) in the Baltic Sea. At all study stations, total genotoxicity (∑Gentox) was found to be higher than total cytotoxicity (∑Cytox). A significant time-related decrease in genotoxicity was detected in the Lithuanian EEZ (2015–2017), while in the Polish EEZ (2014–2016), the opposite tendency was revealed. The highest ∑Gentox and ∑Cytox values recorded in fish sampled at the study stations located relatively close to each other clearly indicate an increased environmental genotoxicity and cytotoxicity pressure for fish in these areas. Exceptionally high and high-level genotoxicity risks to herring followed by those to flounder and cod were determined at a higher percentage of the stations studied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The interdependencies between trophic interactions, environmental factors and anthropogenic forcing determine how species distributions change over time. Large changes in species distributions have occurred as a result of climate change. The objective of this study was to analyse how the spatial distribution of cod and flounder has changed in the Baltic Sea during the past four decades characterized by large hydrological changes. Location: Baltic Sea Taxon: Cod (Gadus morhua) and flounder (Platichthys flesus). Methods: Catch per unit of effort (CPUE) data for adult and juvenile cod and for adult flounder were modelled using Delta‐Generalized additive models including environmental and geographical variables between 1979 and 2016. From the annual CPUE predictions for each species, yearly distribution maps and depth distribution curves were obtained. Mean depth and the depth range were estimated to provide an indication on preferred depth and habitat occupancy. Results: Adult and juvenile cod showed a contraction in their distribution in the southern areas of the Baltic Sea. Flounder, instead, showed an expansion in its distribution with an increase in abundance in the northern areas. The depth distributions showed a progressive shift of the mean depth of occurrence towards shallower waters for adult cod and flounder and towards deeper waters for juvenile cod, as well as a contraction of the species depth ranges, evident mainly from the late 1980s. Main conclusions: Our study illustrates large changes in the spatial distribution of cod and flounder in the Baltic Sea. The changes in depth distribution occurred from the late 1980s are probably due to a combination of expanded areas of hypoxia in deep waters and an increase in predation risk in shallow waters. The net effect of these changes is an increased spatial overlap between life stages and species, which may amplify cod cannibalism and the interaction strength between cod and flounder. Environmental factors can cause cancer in both wild animals and humans. In ecological settings, genetic variation and natural selection can sometimes produce resilience to the negative impacts of environmental change. An increase in oncogenic substances in natural habitats has therefore, unintentionally, created opportunities for using polluted habitats to study cancer defence mechanisms. The Baltic and North Sea are among the most contaminated marine areas, with a long history of pollution. Two flatfish species (flounder, Platichthys flesus and dab, Limanda limanda) are used as ecotoxicological indicator species due to pollution-induced liver cancer. Cancer is more prevalent in dab, suggesting species-specific differences in vulnerability and/or defence mechanisms. We conducted gene expression analyses for 30 flatfishes. We characterize between- and within-species patterns in potential cancer-related mechanisms. By comparing cancerous and healthy fishes, and non-cancerous fishes from clean and polluted sites, we suggest also genes and related physiological mechanisms that could contribute to a higher resistance to pollution-induced cancer in flounders. We discovered changes in transcriptome related to elevated pollutant metabolism, alongside greater tumour suppression mechanisms in the liver tissue of flounders compared to dabs. This suggests either hormetic upregulation of tumour suppression or a stronger natural selection pressure for higher cancer resistance for flounders in polluted environment. Based on gene expression patterns seen in cancerous and healthy fish, for liver cancer to develop in flounders, genetic defence mechanisms need to be suppressed, while in dabs, analogous process is weak or absent. We conclude that wild species could offer novel insights and ideas for understanding the nature and evolution of natural cancer defence mechanisms. The European flounder (Platichthys flesus) is a marine flatfish with high plasticity in several life-history traits, including spawning sites and habitat use patterns. With the overarching goal of understanding the use of estuaries in connection with maturation and reproduction in adult flounder, this study investigates its reproductive cycle in the Douro Estuary (NW Portugal), at the southern edge of its geographical distribution. Adults were caught by monthly trawling from November 2016 to November 2017. Sex ratio and length-weight relationships were determined. The annual reproductive cycle was described using a combination of gonadosomatic (GSI), hepatosomatic (HSI), and general fish condition (Kn) indices, seasonal gonad development staging (macroscopic and histological), and quantification of plasma sexual steroids. Total sex ratio was 1 M:3 F, and females presented negative allometric growth, while males' growth was isometric. The various indices consistently indicated that the greatest reproductive activity occurred between January and March, peaking in February. However, some females at advanced reproductive stages (late vitellogenesis), high GSI values and steroid hormone (E2) levels were observed as late as May. Females in spawning condition, i.e., undergoing full oocyte maturation and ovulation, were never found, unlike males who exhibited spermiation within the estuary. Sexual differences in migration patterns were also suggested: males seem to leave earlier and stay longer in offshore spawning grounds, while females return to the estuary shortly after spawning. Overall, there was a good correlation between GSI, seasonal hormone cycling, and sexual maturity of female and male flounder, supporting the use of circulating sex steroids as a less invasive tool to assess maturity status. • Douro estuary is at the southern limit of European flounder distribution. • Flounder in Douro estuary are residents with a restricted sea-spawning migration. • Reproductive activity was highest between January and March peaking in February. • Males mature in the estuary while females complete maturation and spawn offshore. • Plasma sex steroids can be used as a non-lethal tool to assess flounder maturity. To assess the potential of the sole as sentinel species for ecotoxicological monitoring, the present study compares contaminant levels and biological responses with two closely related flatfish species: the common dab and European flounder. Trace metals, organic contaminants and biomarkers were measured in the three flatfish species collected during the same oceanographic cruise in the Bay of Seine (France). Overall, sole showed lower concentrations of Hg, met-Hg, Cd, Zn and PBDE (lw), higher concentrations of Ag, Cu, PFOS (ww), PCBs, p,p' -DDE (lw) and OH-pyrene, a higher ability to metabolize PBDEs and higher genotoxic (Comet, Micronuclei) and neurotoxic (AChE inhibition) alterations. Sole was the species most frequently occurring in the bay and appeared sensitive to chemical contamination. We therefore recommend promoting the use of the common sole for ecotoxicological monitoring. • Chemical contaminants alone are not sufficient for assessing the fish health status. • The species with the most altered biomarker responses was not the most contaminated. • With regard to pollution, integrated monitoring is key to assess ecosystems' status. • The common sole is a suitable sentinel species for coastal pollution monitoring. In fish, the skin is directly exposed to multiple environmental stressors and provides the first line of defense against harmful external factors. It turned out that cortisol and melatonin (Mel) are involved in fish cutaneous stress response system (CSRS) similar to mammalian. This study investigates the mode of action of CSRS in two teleost species of different biology and skin characteristics, the three-spined stickleback and the European flounder, after exposure to oxidative stress induced by a potassium dichromate solution. The cutaneous stress response system presents different ways of action in two studied species: Mel concentration increases in the skin of both species, but cortisol concentration increases in the skin only in sticklebacks. Data suggest that stickleback skin cells can produce cortisol. However, cortisol is not involved in the response to oxidative stress in flounders. In stickleback skin, two genes encoding AANAT and ASMT/HIOMT (enzymes involved in Mel synthesis), aanat1a and asmt2 , are expressed, but in flounder skin, only one, asmtl. Because gene expression does not change in stickleback skin after exposure to stress, the source of increased Mel is probably outside the skin. A lack of expression of the gene encoding AANAT in flounder skin strongly suggests that Mel is transported to the skin by the bloodstream from other sites of synthesis. Pigment dispersion in the skin after exposure to oxidative stress is found only in sticklebacks. Diadromous fish species have a complex life cycle during which they migrate between marine and freshwater habitats. They experience multiple human-induced pressures in both environments, likely exacerbated by climate change, leading to dramatic population declines across their distribution ranges. Currently Species Distribution Models (SDMs) have been applied separately in both their continental and marine habitats to improve our understanding of their lifecycles and help with species management. Integrating the freshwater-sea continuum into the decisions would now be a step further in improving their management. With this objective, we developed a decision tree that links marine and freshwater SDM outputs with current observations of population functionality and suggested management guidance options for the viability of these species. Potential effects of climate change were included through future SDM projections to guide integrative and long-term management. Several criteria were proposed to assess the SDM validity considering the main sources of SDM uncertainties and local expert knowledge on habitat and population status. The framework was applied to approximately one hundred catchments from southern Portugal to southern Scandinavia for four diadromous species. At the European level, management guidance options differed between the two anadromous and two catadromous species. Platichthys flesus and Chelon ramada European populations seemed in better state than those of Alosa alosa and A. fallax. Finally, with the help of national diadromous species experts, we focused on four catchments distributed along the European latitudinal gradient to test the proposed methodology and demonstrate local management challenges in terms of freshwater-sea continuity. Abstract The period of larval drift into a suitable nursery area is considered to be of great significance for recruitment variability in flatfish. Here, a hydrodynamic model coupled with a Lagrangian particle tracking technique was utilized to study the drift from the first feeding larval stage until time of settlement of Central and Eastern Baltic flounder (Platichthys flesus), originating from spawning in the Baltic Sea deep basins, the Arkona- and Bornholm basin (central Baltic Sea), and the Gdansk deep and Gotland basin (eastern Baltic Sea). We examined the spatio-temporal dynamics of the probability to settle in preferred nursery habitat by detailed drift model simulations. The study suggests that the majority of larvae (89% and 74% for Central- and Eastern Baltic flounder, respectively) drift towards coastal areas and settle at metamorphosis ≤20 km from a sandy habitat enabling further migration to a preferred nursery area, i.e. larval drift seems not to be a major bottleneck in recruitment of flounder spawning in the Baltic Sea deep basins. The drift model results suggest that Central Baltic flounder utilize nursery areas mainly in the central and western Baltic, and in the Kattegat, whereas Eastern Baltic flounder mainly utilize the coast in the central and eastern Baltic. Thus, the two stock components seem to use different nursery areas following settlement. Further, in accordance with the "nursery size hypothesis", the model demonstrates that larvae from the Bornholm basin, utilizing areas with extensive distribution of preferred nursery habitat, display the highest relative successful transport to nursery grounds until settling (72% of successfully settled larvae), suggesting that spawning in the Bornholm Basin is of great importance for stock recruitment of deep basin spawning Baltic flounder. Fish telemetry studies give unique information about fish movements (migrations), but there are still several methodological constraints. A critical step is the choice of an appropriate tag and tagging method, essential to guaranteeing that the tagged fish is representative of the general wild population. The effects of two tagging methods with acoustic transmitters on the behavior, survival, condition, and growth of the European flounder Platichthys flesus (L.) were evaluated in tank experiments. Two 33-day assays were conducted: one with adult flounder to test intracoelomic (internal) and external tagging with Vemco V7-2 L dummy tags, and a second assay with juveniles using only external tags. Intracoelomic implantation resulted in very low survival rate (10%), fish lethargy, and a lack of response to food. External tagging did not affect behavior but had negative effects on the final condition of adult flounder, and on the specific growth rates (SGR) of smaller-sized fish. Estuaries have long been recognized as nursery habitats for various marine fish species. As seascapes consisting of a mosaic of habitat patches, estuarine nurseries incorporate ecological processes such as ontogenetic shifts. To improve our understanding of the habitat requirement changes of nursery species within the estuarine seascape, habitat suitability models were built using boosted regression trees for three size classes of European flounder ( Platichthys flesus ) juveniles. The models combined several dynamic and static predictors, from physical and chemical water parameters to biological and physical habitat variables. The relationships between juveniles and predictor variables varied with size, potentially indicating the dynamics of habitat use for the juvenile flounder inside the estuarine nursery. Younger post-settled juveniles tended to be spatially constrained to a shallow upstream area and, with size, there were ontogenetic shifts to the middle estuary. This demonstrates the importance of considering different life stages when developing essential fish habitat maps, which reflect fine scale temporal and spatial distributions. Given the high level of anthropogenic pressures to which estuaries are subjected, the consideration of fish ontogenetic habitat requirements within the estuarine nursery is needed to identify high-value areas, and is valuable for developing effective spatial and temporal management plans. These are essential to fully protect the most sensitive life stages, such as early post-settlement stages occupying transient habitats. Additionally, and as the juvenile-habitat associations can rapidly change, fine-scale connectivity in the estuarine nursery becomes even more relevant in determining recruitment. Semicarbazide (SMC), a new marine pollutant, has anti-estrogenic effects on female Japanese flounder ( Paralichthys olivaceus ). However, whether SMC also affects the reproductive endocrine system of male marine organisms is currently unclear. In this study, Japanese flounder embryos were exposed to 1, 10, and 100 μg/L SMC for 130 days. Plasma testosterone (T) and 17β-estradiol (E 2 ) concentrations were significantly decreased in male flounders after SMC exposure. The expression of genes involved in T and E 2 synthesis, including steroidogenic acute regulatory protein, cytochrome P450 11A1, 17α-hydroxylase, 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and cytochrome P450 19A, was down-regulated in the gonads, which may explain the decrease in plasma sex hormones levels. Moreover, SMC-mediated changes in the transcription of these steroidogenic genes were associated with reduced levels of follicle-stimulating hormone beta subunit ( fshβ ), luteinizing hormone beta subunit ( lhβ ), follicle-stimulating hormone receptor ( fshr ) and luteinizing hormone receptor ( lhr ) mRNA. In addition, down-regulated transcription of fshβ and lhβ in the SMC exposure groups was affected by reduced mRNA levels of seabream gonadotropin-releasing hormone ( sbgnrh ), g-protein-coupled receptor 54 ( gpr54 ) in the kisspeptin/gpr54 system, as well as the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) synthesis enzyme glutamic acid decarboxylase ( gad ). Overall, our results showed that environmentally relevant concentrations of SMC exerted anti-androgenic effects in male flounders via impacting HPG axis, kiss/gpr54 system and GABA synthesis, providing theoretical support for investigating reproductive toxicity of environmental pollutants that interfere with the neuroendocrine system. This study evaluated the effect of protein hydrolysate (PH) and clove essential oil (CEO) on agar film properties and the shelf-life improvement of flounder fillets. Firstly, Argentine croaker muscle protein was alkali-solubilised and recovered to obtain a stable substrate. This substrate was hydrolysed to 20% degree of hydrolysis, by Alcalase (A20) and Protamex (P20). The molecular weight (MW) distribution, amino acid and in vitro antimicrobial activity of these hydrolysates were tested. Agar films were prepared with and without (control) incorporation of PH (A20 hydrolysate) or CEO and characterised by mechanical properties, water vapour permeability, solubility and optical properties. The microbiological, physical and chemical properties of flounder fillets coated with these films were monitored during storage at 5 °C for 15 days. Compared to P20, A20 hydrolysate possessed lower MW, higher hydrophobic amino acid content and the most effective antimicrobial activity against selected pathogens, such as Staphylococcus aureus , Yersinia enterocolitica , Aeromonas hydrophila , Debaryomyces hansenii and Listeria innocua . The presence of PH increased the water solubility, water vapour permeability, elongation at break and yellowness of the films. The CEO films possessed less transparency than PH films and control films, due to the presence of oil in the formulations. Fillets covered with PH and CEO films, especially the latter, presented lower total volatile bases and pH values, and delayed considerably the growth of H 2 S-producing microorganisms compared to the control films. The CEO might be used as a natural biopreservative to extend the flounder shelf-life. However, further studies are necessary, to assess the antimicrobial effect of PH when used as food packaging. Frequencies of eight nuclear abnormalities (NAs) reflecting environmental genotoxicity and cytotoxicity, were examined in 739 specimens of herring ( Clupea harengus ), flounder ( Platichthys flesus ) and cod ( Gadus morhua ) collected between 2009 and 2017 at 50 study stations located in the Gulf of Gdansk and the southern part of the Gdansk Deep (the Baltic Sea). The highest levels of geno-cytotoxicity were recorded in fish caught at stations located in close proximity to chemical and conventional munitions dumping sites or in zones polluted by Chemical Warfare Agents (CWAs). The values of NAs were significantly higher (up to 51-fold compared with the reference level) in herring caught at seven stations and in cod from one station located close to the munitions dumping sites. Exceptionally high total genotoxicity (∑Gtox) risk was found for flounder collected from 18 (72.0%) stations, herring caught at 12 (38.7%) stations and cod caught at four (17.4%) studied stations.
