The Demographic Census is the most relevant set of research to understand Brazil, allowing to analyse the main socio-economic and spatial transformations of the Brazilian territory. On its various scales, it identifies processes and trends that contrast with past territorial dynamics, demographic developments and emerging social demands. The aim of this text is to analyze these transformations in the state of Rondônia, presenting as the center of analysis the expansion of the urban network and its population dynamics. To achieve this, the methodology adopted combined the review of regional research with statistical-cartographic analyses. The results indicate two processes: the formation of an urban axis and population recentralization along the BR-364 highway, simultaneously, with population dispersion in small and intermediate municipalities. From a population receiving state, Rondônia passes to a stage of little demographic growth, with population displacement fronts towards new agricultural frontiers in the Western Amazon. La aparición de suburbios de estrato socioeconómico superior en Santiago sugiere una dispersión de este grupo y una pérdida de importancia del barrio alto, que ha sido su hábitat histórico. Sin embargo, el barrio alto ha mantenido su dinamismo demográfico e inmobiliario, tanto vertical como horizontal. Dado que la migración es decisiva en dicho proceso, en este artículo se investiga con detalle y rigor su papel en la localización y redistribución de los estratos socioeconómicos de Santiago. Con ese fin, se utilizan los microdatos de los últimos cuatro censos oficiales de Chile. Se concluye que la dispersión territorial del estrato socioeconómico superior no reduce el atractivo del barrio alto para ese grupo y que, más que desconcentración, esa difusión podría dar lugar a una ampliación de la escala geográfica del barrio alto, por su contigüidad con los nuevos suburbios de estrato socioeconómico superior [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is crucial to establish an entry profile to achieve a university graduation profile consistent with the current situation known by the institution of higher education regarding the characteristics of the newly enrolled students. This work proposes the definition of income profiles based on sociodemographic variables, admission conditions, previous education, motivation, and interests. For this, databases and characterization surveys applied to first-year students from five engineering degrees are used. As a result, common characteristics in the studied careers are identified, such as age, entryway, and not declaring themselves part of native peoples or in a disability situation. Other variables that differentiated the groups, such as type of secondary education, performance, and gender gap, were also recognized. In addition, the established profiles are related to the generic graduation skills. In this way, actions to strengthen students' capacities can be generated, and they have the support tools that allow for improving achievement indicators during their university life. The main goal of this paper is to analyze residential mobility within the Córdoba Metropolitan Region, particularly changes in the municipality of residence in the period 2005-2010. The data come from the National Population, Household and Housing Census 2010 and information about the municipality of habitual residence and on a previous fixed date are used. Entry and exit rates are calculated for the different municipalities that make up the region, as well as net rates of residential mobility, according to the size of the population and the distance from the metropolitan center. The intensity of residential mobility is also estimated according to the characteristics of the individuals and households that carried out these displacements. The municipalities of smaller size and located at an intermediate distance exhibit the highest net rates of residential mobility, and the highest intensity is recorded among adults between 30 and 39 years old with higher educational levels and in children from 5 to 9 years old, that resided in a household in the process of raising children. The results obtained show the important role of residential mobility in the configuration of the new socio-territorial dynamics of the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Este artículo presenta la relación entre crecimiento demográfico, inestabilidad política y desarrollo económico en el estado de Campeche entre 1846 y 1910. Este trabajo se elabora con base a los estudios de población de Robert Mc Caa, John Kicza, así como de Margarita Urías y Carlos San Juan, quienes relacionan las tendencias demográficas, el análisis de las cifras y la conformación económica de un territorio determinado. Se revisan censos y estimaciones, así como los informes y memorias de gobierno. El análisis muestra la migración de los moradores del estado de Campeche hacia la zona costera a partir de conflictos bélicos, el fracaso de los programas de la federación, lo que dio como consecuencia, el traslado de las personas hacia otras zonas del país y una detención del aumento de residentes de la entidad. Es un acercamiento para la elaboración de nuevas investigaciones que utilicen distintas series numéricas y el análisis más detallado de procesos socioeconómicos y naturales relacionados con los indicadores demográficos.

Objetivos: analizar los patrones espaciales de la migración peruana en la Ciudad de Córdoba, Argentina y comparar la población nacida en Perú que se encuentra agrupada en clústers con aquella dispersa en la ciudad. Métodos: se utilizaron técnicas de estadística espacial y análisis sociodemográfico. En la primera fase se usaron medidas globales de autocorrelación espacial (índice global de Moran) y medidas locales de agrupación espacial para representar clústers de población (Gi* de Getis Ord). En la segunda fase se realiza un análisis sociodemográfico de los clústers de población agrupada y dispersa. Resultados: se sugiere la interacción de dos procesos. En primer lugar, la concentración en zonas específicas de la ciudad de migrantes peruanos en patrones que no son aleatorios. Migrantes más antiguos se encuentran principalmente dispersos en la ciudad mientras migrantes más recientes se encuentran concentrados. En segundo lugar, los migrantes peruanos hombres dispersos tienen una mayor diversificación en cuanto a la estructura ocupacional y una mejor posición socioeconómica que los agrupados. Los patrones observados sugieren que existen diferenciales de género en estos procesos. Las mujeres, tanto las que se encuentran dispersas como las agrupadas, presentan una situación socioeconómica más precaria que los hombres. Esa situación es transversal a la dispersión/concentración en el espacio urbano. Conclusiones: se sugiere que las composiciones de clase, género y la temporalidad de los flujos migratorios articulan las modalidades de incorporación a la sociedad de destino.

The recent works in line with the landscapeʼs archaeology have showed the utility and the importance of the Iberian settlement pattern and offer news perspectives to approach the Iberian culture. In connection with this, the Geographical Information Systems constitute an essential tool to analyzer many of these aspects. This new approach, developed already in other peninsular areas, allows, in the Iberian Southest, a diachronic and global study of the Iberian age. Furthermore, it presents the greatest interest in Murcia, where scarce studies are found in this line.

Compactness of a congressional district is a traditional principle in adjudicating gerrymandering claims in political redistricting. During the last decade, many states have used compactness as an important criterion to constrain the presence of gerrymandering in the redistricting process. In this study, we conducted an array of spatiotemporal analyses aiming to evaluate the changes in compactness between the 112th and 113th Congressional districting plans in California and North Carolina, two states that have been well known for their heavy gerrymandering for years. We employed classic shape-based compactness measures, moment-of-inertia-based measures, and measures of partisan bias to assess the districting plans from multiple angles, including irregularity of district boundaries, spatial dispersion, population-weighted shape dispersion, and partisan symmetry. This new and combined use of spatial measures evidenced remarkable increases on the average compactness scores for California's Congress, suggesting general alleviation of the bipartisan gerrymandering in the previous plan. On the contrary, the partisan gerrymandering in North Carolina intensified in the current map, indicated by the substantial decline in the compactness scores for a majority of the districts. Analysis of partisan bias in the districting plans suggested a very slight bias toward Democrats in California in both districting plans. In North Carolina, the partisan advantage shifted from Democrats to Republicans during redistricting. Comparative analysis between the two families of spatial measures revealed the superiority of the moment of inertia family to the classic shape-based indexes for measuring compactness of congressional districts. El presente trabajo trata del cambio de patrones observados recientemente en la distribución territorial de la población, a razón de la reestructuración económica de tipo postfordista, con carácter periférico y con rasgos específicos a nivel regional y local de la economía mexicana. Se analiza el desmantelamiento del esquema de producción rígida (fordismo) a cambio del nuevo régimen de producción flexible (postfordismo), su carácter periférico y modalidades para el desarrollo regional. Se pretende llegar a la concepción de la región como un concepto instrumental valioso para la ciencia, como de interés político administrativo, clarificador de los problemas que se viven en un territorio, donde se identifica por grado y dimensión al mismo, lo que permite delinear políticas de acción que procuren el desarrollo regional ordenado, viable y pertinente en lo social y en materia de medio ambiente.
