Abstract Ferroelectric materials exhibiting switchable and spontaneous polarization have strong potential to be utilized in various novel electronic devices. Solid solutions of different perovskite structures induce the coexistence of various phases and enhance the physical functionalities around the phase coexistence region. The construction of phase diagrams is important as they describe the material properties, which are linked to the underpinning physics determining the system. Here we present the phase diagram of (K0.5Na0.5NbO3)–(Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3) (KNN-BST) system as a function of composition and their associated physical properties. Lead-free (1 − x)KNN–xBST (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) solid solution ceramics were synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction technique. The X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic studies indicate composition-dependent structural phase transitions from an orthorhombic phase for x = 0 to orthorhombic + tetragonal dual-phase (for 0.025 ≤ x ≤ 0.15), then a tetragonal + cubic dual-phase (x = 0.2) and finally a cubic single phase for x ≥ 0.25 at room temperature (RT). Among these, the orthorhombic + tetragonal dual-phase system shows an enhanced value of the dielectric constant at room temperature. The phase transition temperatures, orthorhombic to tetragonal (TO-T) and tetragonal to cubic (TC), decrease with the increase in BST concentrations. The ferroelectric studies show a decrease of both 2Pr and EC values with a rise in BST concentration and x = 0.025 showed a maximum piezoelectric coefficient.

A detail analysis on the structural, morphological, dielectric, conductivity, ferroelectric, magnetic and electrical behaviour of Gd doped GaFeO3 prepared by mixed oxide method is presented. XRD analysis, by using Rietveld refinement method, validates that all the samples have single phase orthorhombic structure. Decrement in the grain size with rise in Gd content is found from FESEM analysis. The dispersive characteristic of dielectric constant is described by the Maxwell-Wagner model and Koop's theory. The value of εr is found to increase with Gd content. The modified Debye formula is used to fit εr with frequency data, which indicates the existence of more than one relaxation processes. The frequency dependant ac conductivity curve is found to obey Jonscher's power law and the conduction mechanism for all the samples is explained by of small polaron hopping (SPH) transport model. The modulus and impedance spectra confirms the presence of non- Debye type of relaxation. The presence of semicircular curves of complex impedance plot suggests the effect of grain boundary contribution to the conduction process for all the samples at low temperatures. The value of remanent polarization is found to fall with Gd content. From M-H loop, magnetisation at M (30kOe) is found to rise while non-saturation is found to decrease with Gd content and analysed on the basis of Law of Approach.

In this study, we are reporting the impact of the incorporation of ferroelectric nanoparticles (FNPs), such as BaTiO3 (BTO), BiFeO3 (BFO), Bi4NdTi3Fe0.7Ni0.3O15 (BNTFN), and Bi4NdTi3Fe0.5Co0.5O15 (BNTFC), as well as the mass loading of sulfur to fabricated solvent-free sulfur/holey graphene-carbon black/polyvinylidene fluoride (S/FNPs/CBhG/PVDF) composite electrodes to achieve high areal capacity for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. The dry-press method was adopted to fabricate composite cathodes. The hG, a conductive and lightweight scaffold derived from graphene, served as a matrix to host sulfur and FNPs for the fabrication of solvent-free composites. Raman spectra confirmed the dominant hG framework for all the composites, with strong D, G, and 2D bands. The surface morphology of the fabricated cathode system showed a homogeneous distribution of FNPs throughout the composites, confirmed by the EDAX spectra. The observed Li+ ion diffusion coefficient for the composite cathode started at 2.17 × 10−16 cm2/s (S25(CBhG)65PVDF10) and reached up to the highest value (4.15 × 10−15 cm2/s) for S25BNTFC5(CBhG)60PVDF10. The best discharge capacity values for the S25(CBhG)65PVDF10 and S25BNTFC5(CBhG)60PVDF10 composites started at 1123 mAh/gs and 1509 mAh/gs and dropped to 612 mAh/gs and 572 mAh/gs, respectively, after 100 cycles; similar behavior was exhibited by the other composites that were among the best. These are better values than those previously reported in the literature. The incorporation of ferroelectric nanoparticles in the cathodes of Li-S batteries reduced the rapid formation of polysulfides due to their internal electric fields. The areal capacity for the S25(CBhG)65PVDF10 composites was 4.84 mAh/cm2 with a mass loading of 4.31 mgs/cm2, while that for the S25BNTFC5(CBhG)60PVDF10 composites was 6.74 mAh/cm2 with a mass loading of 4.46 mgs/cm2. It was confirmed that effective FNP incorporation within the S cathode improves the cycling response and stability of cathodes, enabling the high performance of Li-S batteries.

Abstract Multiferroic composites are promising candidates for magnetic field sensors, next-generation low power memory and spintronic devices, as they exhibit much higher magnetoelectric (ME) coupling and coupled ordering parameters compared to the single-phase multiferroics. Hence, the 3-0 type particulate multiferroic composites having general formula (1 − Φ)[PbFe0.5Nb0.5O3]-Φ[Co0.6Zn0.4Fe1.7Mn0.3O4] (Φ = 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 1.0, (1 − Φ) PFN-ΦCZFMO) were prepared using a hybrid synthesis technique. Preliminary structural and microstructural analysis were carried out using XRD and FESEM techniques, which suggest the formation of 3-0 type particulate composite without the presence of any impurity phases. The multiferroic behaviour of the composites is studied with polarization versus electric field (P-E) and magnetization versus magnetic field (M-H) characteristics at room temperature. The nature of ME coupling was investigated elaborately by employing the Landau free energy equation along with the magneto-capacitance measurement. This investigation suggests the existence of biquadratic nature of ME coupling (P2M2). The magneto-electric coupling measurement also suggests that strain mediated domain coupling between the ferroelectric and magnetic ordering is responsible for the magneto-electric behaviour. The obtained value of direct ME coefficient 26.78 mV/cm-Oe for Φ = 0.3, found to be higher than the well-known single-phase materials and polycrystalline composites.

Abstract One of the ways to mitigate the world energy crisis is to harvest clean and green energy from waste-heat, which is abundant, ubiquitous, and free. Energy harvesting of this waste-heat is one of the most encouraging methods to capture freely accessible electrical energy. Ferroelectric materials can be used to harvest energy for low power electronic devices, as they exhibit switchable polarization, excellent piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties. The most important characteristic of ferroelectric materials, in the context of energy harvesting, is their ability to generate electric power from a time-dependent temperature change. In this work, we grew highly c-axis oriented heterostructures of BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (barium zirconium titanate, BZT)/Ba0.7Ca0.3TiO3 (barium calcium titanate, BCT) on SrRuO3 (strontium ruthenate, SRO) and deposited on SrTiO3 (strontium titanate, STO) single crystalline substrate using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. We investigated the structural, electrical, dielectric, and pyroelectric properties of the above-mentioned fabricated heterostructures. The wide range of θ–2θ X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns only shows (00l) reflection peaks of heterostructures and the substrate which confirmed that the films are highly c-axis oriented. We are also capable to convert the low-grade waste-heat into electrical energy by measuring various temperature-dependent ferroelectric hysteresis loops of our nanostructure films via pyroelectric Ericsson cycles and the structures show an energy conversion density ~ 10,970 kJ/m3 per cycle. These devices exhibit a large pyroelectric current density of ~ 25 mA/m2 with 11.8 °C of temperature fluctuation and the corresponding pyroelectric coefficient of 3425 μC/m2K. Our research findings suggest that these lead-free relaxor-ferroelectric heterostructures might be the potential candidates to harvest electrical energy from waste low-grade thermal energy.

Multiferroic (MF)-magnetoelectric (ME) composites, which integrate magnetic and ferroelectric materials, exhibit a higher operational temperature (above room temperature) and superior (several orders of magnitude) ME coupling when compared to single-phase multiferroic materials. Room temperature control and the switching of magnetic properties via an electric field and electrical properties by a magnetic field has motivated research towards the goal of realizing ultralow power and multifunctional nano (micro) electronic devices. Here, some of the leading applications for magnetoelectric composites are reviewed, and the mechanisms and nature of ME coupling in artificial composite systems are discussed. Ways to enhance the ME coupling and other physical properties are also demonstrated. Finally, emphasis is given to the important open questions and future directions in this field, where new breakthroughs could have a significant impact in transforming scientific discoveries to practical device applications, which can be well-controlled both magnetically and electrically.

With the development of electronic devices towards miniaturization, light weight and integration, dielectric thin film-capacitors for recoverable energy storage applications have attracted ever-growing interests owing to their fast charging and discharging rate. In continuation to our investigations for achieving high energy density, we have grown lead free BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (BZT)/Ba0.7Ca0.3TiO3 (BCT) heterostructures and studied the structural, dielectric, ferroelectric and energy density characteristics. The BZT/BCT bilayer epitaxial heterostructures were grown on La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) buffered LaAlO3 (LAO) single crystal substrate by optimized pulsed laser deposition technique. The ferroelectric phase transition has been probed above room temperature with relaxor behavior. These nanostructures show high discharge and charge energy densities of 9.74 and 26.55 J/cm3, respectively. These heterostructures show high dielectric permittivity, large polarization and high energy density characteristics well above room temperature which may be useful for both high power and energy density device applications.

Highly sensitive large-scale tin oxide (SnO2) nanostructures were grown on a glass substrate by thermal evaporation of a mixture of anhydrous tin (II) chloride (SnCl2) and zinc chloride (ZnCl2) powders at 550°C in air. We demonstrate a single cell vapor deposition system to precisely control nanostructural morphology of SnO2 by changing the weight ratio of SnCl2 and ZnCl2 and growth temperature. The morphology and structural property of as-grown nanostructures were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The SEM images revealed that the SnO2 nanostructures with different densities, sizes, and shapes can be achieved by adjusting the weight ratio of SnCl2 and ZnCl2. A thin film gas sensor based on SnO2 nanostructures with diameter ∼20 nm and length ∼100 nm showed ∼85% sensitivity and 53 seconds of response time, whereas the nanorods with diameter ∼100 nm and length ∼ 1μm showed ∼50% sensitivity with 198 seconds response time. The nanostructured material with small size and shape showed better sensitivity on sensing at room temperature compared to previously reported SnO2 based sensors.

Polycrystalline sample of lead-free 1/3(Ba0.70Sr0.30TiO3) + 1/3(Ba0.70Ca0.30TiO3) + 1/3(BaZr0.20Ti0.80O3)(BST-BCT-BZT) ceramic was synthesized by solid state reaction method. Phase purity and crystal structure of as-synthesized materials was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Temperature-dependent dielectric permittivity studies demonstrated frequency-independent behavior, indicating that the studied sample has typical diffuse phase transition behavior with partial thermal hysteresis. A ferroelectric phase transition between cubic and tetragonal phase was noticed near room temperature (~ 330 K). Bulk P–E hysteresis loop showed a saturation polarization of 20.4 μC/cm2 and a coercive field of ~ 12.78 kV/cm at a maximum electric field of ~ 115 kV/cm. High dielectric constant (ε ~ 5773), low dielectric loss (tan δ ~ 0.03) were recorded at room temperature. Discharge energy density of 0.44 J/cm3 and charge energy density of 1.40 J/cm3 were calculated from nonlinear ferroelectric hysteresis loop at maximum electric field. Dielectric constant at variable temperatures and electric fields, ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition and energy storage properties were thoroughly discussed.

Lead-free 0.5BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3–0.5Ba0.7Ca0.3TiO3 (BZT–BCT) thin films were deposited on Pt(1 1 1)/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The optimal ferroelectric response with a high saturation polarization Ps ~ 110 µC cm−2, remnant polarization Pr ~ 32.5 µC cm−2 along with a coercive field of 0.18 MV cm−1 was observed from the P–E hysteresis loops under an applied frequency of 1 kHz. A giant recoverable energy-storage density of 93.52 J cm−3 at an applied electric field ~3.47 MV cm−1 was observed. The optimized BZT–BCT thin films exhibited a high dielectric constant with a low dielectric loss at room temperature like their bulk counterpart (high dielectric constant (Ɛ ~ 121 81)) and low dielectric loss (tan δ ~ 0.01–0.03) properties. OPP-PFM images revealed switchable ferroelectric distinct polarization contrasts on the application of a  ±12 V dc voltage on the conductive tip at room temperature. Observed enhanced dielectric, ferroelectric and energy density properties of BZT–BCT thin films are useful for next generation electrical energy storage applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the crystal structure, ferroelectric, temperature-dependent leakage current conduction mechanism and the piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) behaviours of (Ba0.955Ca0.045) (Zr0.17Ti0.83)O3–BZT–BCT () films at the vicinity of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) of the [(1  −  x) BaZr0.20Ti0.80O3–xBa0.70Ca0.30TiO3] () composition. Epitaxial BZT–BCT thin films were grown on conductive La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (LSCO) layers coated onto MgO (1 0 0) single-crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). High resolution x-ray diffraction (HR-XRD) reciprocal space maps (RSMs) confirmed the epitaxy with in-plane tetragonal symmetry (c  <  a), and Raman spectra also revealed a tetragonal perovskite crystalline lattice structure. Polarisation studies demonstrate that BZT–BCT films exhibit a high saturation polarisation of 148 µC cm−2 and a high recoverable (discharged) energy-storage density of 39.11 J cm−3 at 2.08 MV cm−1. Temperature-dependent P–E hysteresis loops resulted in a decrease in polarisation. Temperature-dependent leakage current behaviour was obtained and possible conduction mechanism is discussed. PPFM images revealed switchable ferroelectric piezoelectric contrasts after the application of a  ±9 V dc voltage on the conductive tip of the piezoresponse force microscope. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
