Amid global challenges like climate change, extinctions, and disease epidemics, science and society require nuanced, international solutions that are grounded in robust, interdisciplinary perspectives and datasets that span deep time. Natural history collections, from modern biological specimens to the archaeological and fossil records, are crucial tools for understanding cultural and biological processes that shape our modern world. At the same time, natural history collections in low and middle-income countries are at-risk and underresourced, imperiling efforts to build the infrastructure and scientific capacity necessary to tackle critical challenges. The case of Mongolia exemplifies the unique challenges of preserving natural history collections in a country with limited financial resources under the thumb of scientific colonialism. Specifically, the lack of biorepository infrastructure throughout Mongolia stymies efforts to study or respond to large-scale environmental changes of the modern era. Investment in museum capacity and training to develop locally-accessible collections that characterize natural communities over time and space must be a key priority for a future where understanding climate scenarios, predicting, and responding to zoonotic disease, making informed conservation choices, or adapting to agricultural challenges, will be all but impossible without relevant and accessible collections., Competing Interests: Competing interests statement:The authors declare no competing interest.

Understanding the composition and transport of mineral dust is essential for assessing its environmental and health impacts. We investigated the properties of mineral dust along the urbanized Wasatch Front in northern Utah (USA), comparing it with natural dust collected from upwind locations in the arid Great Basin. Using physical and geochemical analyses, we identified significant differences between urban and natural dust that are not attributable to the intervening landscapes. These differences arise from the mixing of natural dust with local anthropogenic materials, including sediments from the Great Salt Lake playa conditioned by over a century of urban activity. This urban-influenced dust is transported downwind, where it may contribute to elevated levels of cadmium, copper, and zinc in streams of downwind mountain watersheds. Under sustained global warming, Arctic climate is projected to become more responsive to changes in North Pacific meridional heat transport as a result of teleconnections between low and high latitudes, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we reconstruct subarctic humidity changes over the past 400 kyr to investigate the role of low-to-high latitude interactions in regulating Arctic hydroclimate. Our reconstruction is based on precipitation-driven sediment input variations in the Subarctic North Pacific (SANP), which reveal a strong precessional cycle in subarctic humidity under the relatively low eccentricity variations that dominated the past four glacial-interglacial cycles. Combined with climate model simulations, we highlight that precession drives meridional shifts in the northern rim of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (NPSG) and modulates the efficiency of heat and water vapor transfer to the SANP and Arctic regions. Thiolated arsenic (As) compounds have been identified in various natural and engineered environments worldwide and are important for the biogeochemical cycling of As, yet quantitative data regarding their stability and transformation rates remains scarce. This study investigates the oxidation kinetics of mono-, di-, and tri-thioarsenate at varying pH, Fe, and (thio-)As concentrations in the aqueous phase. Experiments conducted over four weeks revealed that all thioarsenates were oxidized faster at lower pH, with rates of up to several μmoles/L/d at a pH of 3. Trithioarsenate demonstrated approximately two orders-of-magnitude faster oxidation rates than di- and monothioarsenate and these rates exhibited a higher sensitivity to pH and dissolved As and Fe concentrations. The presence of Fe enhanced the oxidation rates of trithioarsenate but had less impact on di- and monothioarsenate. Kinetic data were subsequently used to parameterize oxidation rate equations and determine reaction orders, and to calibrate a kinetic model that was leveraged to determine rate constants. Vetulicolians are an enigmatic phylum of extinct Cambrian marine invertebrates. They are particularly diverse in the Chengjiang Biota of China, but representatives have been recovered from other Fossil-Lagerstätten (Cambrian Stage 3-Drumian). These organisms are characterized by a bipartite body, which is split into an anterior section and a posterior segmented section connected by a narrow constriction. Here we report new material of the genus Pomatrum from the Cambrian Balang Biota (Series 2, Stage 4) of Hunan, southern China. This is the first discovery of this vetulicolian outside of the Chengjiang Biota (Series 2, Stage 3) and the first report of vetulicolians from the Balang Biota. This finding not only suggests that this group had a wider spatial and temporal distribution than previously known, but also adds information to the overall biodiversity of the Balang Biota-one of the most important Stage 4 fossil deposits known from Gondwana., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no competing interests., (© 2025 Ma et al.)

New efficient and sustainable methods for the removal of malachite green (MG) from environmental media are needed. In this study, corn straw was co-pyrolyzed with montmorillonite under a variety of conditions (400, 500, 600, and 700 °C and 10-40 wt% montmorillonite), without any use of toxic chemicals, to produce a series of biochar-clay composites. Characteristics of the composites that make them promising contaminant sorbents include a uniform lamellar-particle micromorphology, enhanced mesoporous structure and surface area (53.0 m 2  g -1 ), and abundant and diverse oxygen/carbon-containing functional groups (i.e., O-H, C-O, C=C, and C-H). The composite produced at 600 °C and 10 wt% montmorillonite had the highest observed MG removal from aqueous solution (6572.1 mg g -1 , 99.6% removal rate). Adsorption of MG by the sorbent was attributed to multiple sorption mechanisms, including physical interaction, cation exchange, and π-π bonding interactions, and was modulated by intra-particle diffusion. Sphagnum-dominated bogs are climatically impactful systems that exhibit two puzzling characteristics: CO 2 :CH 4 ratios are greater than those predicted by electron balance models and C decomposition rates are enigmatically slow. We hypothesized that Maillard reactions partially explain both phenomena by increasing apparent CO 2 production via eliminative decarboxylation and sequestering bioavailable nitrogen (N). We tested this hypothesis using incubations of sterilized Maillard reactants, and live and sterilized bog peat. Consistent with our hypotheses, CO 2 production in the sterilized peat was equivalent to 8-13% of CO 2 production in unsterilized peat, and the increased formation of aromatic N compounds decreased N-availability. Numerous sterility assessments rule out biological contamination or extracellular enzyme activity as significant sources of this CO 2 . These findings suggest a need for a reevaluation of the fixed CO 2 :CH 4 production ratios commonly used in wetland biogeochemical models, which could be improved by incorporating abiotic sources of CO 2 production and N sequestration., Competing Interests: Declarations. The Cambrian explosion was a time of groundbreaking ecological shifts related to the establishment of the Phanerozoic biosphere. Trace fossils, which are the products of animals interacting with their substrates, provide a key record of the diversification of the benthos and the evolution of behavioral complexity through this interval. The Chapel Island Formation of Newfoundland in Canada hosts the most extensive trace-fossil record from the latest Ediacaran to Cambrian Age 2, spanning about 20 million years continuously. To elucidate the relative roles of environmental changes as opposed to evolutionary trajectories, we gathered the largest trace-fossil dataset to date and designed fourteen high-resolution time-environment matrices on bioturbation intensity, burrow width and depth, tiering (i.e., the vertical partitioning of trace fossils within the substrate), ichnodiversity, ichnodisparity (i.e., the development of novel architectural designs in ichnotaxa), ecospace utilization (i.e., the development of ecological niches by benthic animals), and other trends related to specific trace-fossil types. Ecosystem engineering by early animals resulted in three stages identified in the Chapel Island Formation that are probably global-an Ediacaran matground ecology, a Fortunian matground/firmground ecology, and a latest Fortunian/Cambrian Age 2 mixground ecology. Synthetic mordenite is widely used as a molecular sieve, adsorbent, and catalyst. To enhance these functionalities, it is crucial to understand the ion-exchange properties and cation-exchange sites of the zeolite. In this study, we analyzed the structural changes in fully Cs-, Sr-, Cd-, and Pb-exchanged mordenite by using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction under ambient conditions. Rietveld structure refinement revealed that the Cs + cation is predominantly located near the 8-membered ring (8MR) due to its low electronegativity and hydration energy. In contrast, divalent cations such as Sr 2+ and Cd 2+ cations, with higher hydration energies compared to monovalent cations, are present as hydrated ions at the center of the 12-membered ring along the c -axis (12MRc). Pb 2+ ions, due to their higher electronegativity than the framework atoms, exhibit a strong affinity for the electron cloud of framework oxygen atoms, which positions them close to the wall of the 12MRc. The observed differences in the locations of the extra-framework cations are attributed to electrostatic and hydration effects. Furthermore, the CO 2 adsorption capacity was assessed based on the type and site of exchangeable cations. The findings indicate that an increase in the CO 2 adsorption capacity correlates with the number of cations that can effectively interact with CO 2 .

The Red Planet is a magnetic planet. The Martian crust contains strong magnetization from a core dynamo that likely was active during the Noachian period when the surface may have been habitable. The evolution of the dynamo may have played a central role in the evolution of the early atmosphere and the planet's transition to the current cold and dry state. However, the nature and history of the dynamo and crustal magnetization are poorly understood given the lack of well-preserved, oriented, ancient samples with geologic context available for laboratory study. Here, we describe how magnetic measurements of returned samples could transform our understanding of six key unknowns about Mars' planetary evolution and habitability. Such measurements could i) determine the history of the Martian dynamo field's intensity; ii) determine the history of the Martian dynamo field's direction; iii) test the hypothesis that Mars experienced plate tectonics or true polar wander; iv) constrain the thermal and aqueous alteration history of the samples; v) identify sources of Martian crustal magnetization and vi) characterize sedimentary and magmatic processes on Mars. The NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover Mission has collected samples of rock, regolith, and atmosphere within the Noachian-aged Jezero Crater, once the site of a delta-lake system with a high potential for habitability and biosignature preservation. Between sols 109 and 1,088 of the mission, 27 sample tubes have been sealed, including witness tubes. Each sealed sample tube has been collected along with detailed documentation provided by the Perseverance instrument payload, preserving geological and environmental context. Samples representative of the stratigraphy within each of four campaigns have been collected: samples from the Crater Floor Campaign represent a suite of potentially petrogenetically related igneous rocks displaying variable degrees of aqueous alteration; samples from the Fan Front record fluvial to deltaic sediments formed by the transport and deposition of materials from the Jezero watershed; regolith samples from the Fan Front preserve material possibly representative of global dust as well as diverse, locally derived clasts; Upper Fan samples record the latest stages of aqueous activity within Jezero; and samples from the Margin Campaign preserve lacustrine, littoral, or possibly igneous processes that may have occurred early in the history of the crater. Along with anticipated samples from the older rocks within the rim of Jezero Crater, Perseverance promises to deliver a suite of samples preserving a diversity of formation environments and ages. Harmful algal blooms are a critical eco-environmental issue with severe impacts on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Tannic acid (TA) has been suggested as an effective algal bloom control, but the molecular mechanisms of its interaction with algae cells and its effects on algal toxin release remain unclear. This study tracked toxin production and release in the toxigenic species Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) exposed to TA, revealing underlying mechanisms through proteomic analysis. High TA doses effectively inhibited M. aeruginosa growth and microcystin-leucine-arginine (MC-LR) production. However, at a specific TA concentration, M. aeruginosa produced and released more MCs, with extracellular MC-LR levels peaking at 1.91 times the control on day 15. Proteomic analysis indicated upregulation of proteins related to the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, glycolysis, and leucine and arginine biosynthesis, suggesting a compensatory response in M. aeruginosa under TA stress that enhanced cellular energy supply and MC-LR biosynthesis. In addition, TA exposure significantly downregulated proteins involved in ion and metal-cluster binding, disrupting electron transfer and photosynthesis. Several groundwater quality investigations have been conducted in coastal regions that are commonly exposed to multiple anthropogenic stressors. Nonetheless, such studies remain challenging because they require focused-diagnostic approaches for a comprehensive understanding of groundwater contamination. Therefore, this study integrates a multi-tracer approach to acquire comprehensive information allowing for an improved understanding of the origins of groundwater contamination, the relative contribution of contaminants, and their biogeochemical cycling within a coastal groundwater system. This multi-tracer approach, focusing on nitrate (NO 3 ) and sulfate (SO 4 ) groundwater contamination, is applied to a Mediterranean coastal aquifer underlying an important economically strategic agricultural area. Dissolved NO 3 in groundwater has concentrations up to 89 mg/L, whereas SO 4 concentrations in groundwater are up to 458 mg/L. By integrating isotope tracers (i.e., δ 15 N NO3 , δ 18 O NO3 , δ 11 B, δ 34 S SO4 , and δ 18 O SO4 ), NO 3 and SO 4 in the groundwater are found to have originated from multiple anthropogenic and natural sources including synthetic fertilizers, manure, sewage, atmospheric deposition, and marine evaporites. Chemical and isotopic data are coupled to identify the dominant hydro(geo)logic processes and the major subsurface biogeochemical reactions that govern the NO 3 and SO 4 occurrences. Nitrate and SO 4 concentrations are identified to be respectively controlled by nitrification/denitrification and by bacterial dissimilatory SO 4 reduction. Identifying these subsurface biogeochemical processes constrained the Bayesian isotope MixSIAR model, that is used for apportioning the relative contributions of the identified groundwater contamination sources, by informed site-specific isotopic fractionation effects. Results from MixSIAR indicate that manure is distinguished as the predominant source for NO 3 (61 %), whereas SO 4 in groundwater is mostly supplied from two sources (i.e., synthetic fertilizers and soil-derived sulfate) identified with similar contributions (30 %). Seagrass meadows are vital blue carbon habitats, with sedimentary organic carbon (OC) originating from both the seagrass itself and external sources. In this study, lipid biomarkers (n-alkanes), a well-known proxy for tracing OC sources, were used to indicate seagrass presence in sediment records and to correlate with sedimentary OC in cold-temperate seagrass (Zostera marina) sediments. We calculated a Zostera-ratio (seagrass/algae and terrestrial plants-ratio) using identified seagrass biomass n-alkanes (C 15 , C 17 , C 19 , C 21 , C 23 ) as a fingerprint for seagrass-derived OC. Based on the presence or absence of seagrass plant remains in sediments, we confirmed an overall significant positive correlation (R 2  = 0.49, with significant sites ranging from 0.66 to 0.81; p < 0.001) between the Zostera-ratio and OC in sediment profiles down to 2 m depth. The Zostera-ratio ranged from 0.0006 to 0.35 with higher values indicating seagrass plant material. Secondary minerals in mine waste materials impose strong controls on water quality by scavenging solutes of concern. This study investigates the mineralogical and compositional characteristics of secondary Fe(oxy)hydroxides and Ca-sulfates, two globally ubiquitous secondary precipitates, in weathered mine waste rock. Bulk analyses show that Si, Ca, Fe, Al, and S-bearing primary phases were the most abundant in the entire samples, but up to a few wt% of secondary Fe(oxy)hydroxides and Ca-sulfates were present as well. In these secondary phases, trace metal impurities like V (37 mg/kg in Ca-sulfates), Cr (23 mg/kg in Fe-oxides and 21 mg/kg in Ca-sulfates), and Cd (up to 15 mg/kg in Fe-oxides and Ca-sulfates) could not be detected by bulk techniques (XRF and XRD), but their deportment to some extent characterized by automated mineralogy, and their spatial distribution assessed at high-resolution through microscale LA-ICP-MS analysis. Element mapping revealed that metal(loid)s were generally enriched at grain rims, reflective of peripheral sequestration through surface adsorption. An exception was V, which was uniformly distributed in the studied secondary Fe-oxides, suggestive of isomorphic substitution during co-precipitation. Factor analysis revealed distinct groups of elements co-associated within each secondary mineral (e.g., divalent transition metal cations versus oxyanionic metalloids), likely caused by similar primary mineral sourcing or a comparable sequestration mechanism. Polar ice cores and historical records evidence a large-magnitude volcanic eruption in 1831 CE. This event was estimated to have injected ~13 Tg of sulfur (S) into the stratosphere which produced various atmospheric optical phenomena and led to Northern Hemisphere climate cooling of ~1 °C. The source of this volcanic event remains enigmatic, though one hypothesis has linked it to a modest phreatomagmatic eruption of Ferdinandea in the Strait of Sicily, which may have emitted additional S through magma-crust interactions with evaporite rocks. Here, we undertake a high-resolution multiproxy geochemical analysis of ice-core archives spanning the 1831 CE volcanic event. S isotopes confirm a major Northern Hemisphere stratospheric eruption but, importantly, rule out significant contributions from external evaporite S. In multiple ice cores, we identify cryptotephra layers of low K andesite-dacite glass shards occurring in summer 1831 CE and immediately prior to the stratospheric S fallout. This tephra matches the chemistry of the youngest Plinian eruption of Zavaritskii, a remote nested caldera on Simushir Island (Kurils). Radiocarbon ages confirm a recent (<300 y) eruption of Zavaritskii, and erupted volume estimates are consistent with a magnitude 5 to 6 event. The reconstructed radiative forcing of Zavaritskii (-2 ± 1 W m -2 ) is comparable to the 1991 CE Pinatubo eruption and can readily account for the climate cooling in 1831-1833 CE. Continental glaciations during the Pleistocene Epoch created complex systems of aquifers and aquitards across many northern regions of the Earth. The low hydraulic conductivities of glacial till aquitards suggest that limited recharge will reach the underlying aquifers, potentially preserving old groundwaters. Here, we characterize the recharge history in intertill and buried valley aquifers in Saskatchewan, Canada using 14 C, 3 H, 4 He δ 2 H, δ 18 O, and major ions. Intertill aquifers with depths of <30 m had corrected 14 C ages ranging from 0 to 15.5 ka. These aquifers also contained 3 H and/or elevated NO 3 in some locations, indicating that a component of modern recharge had mixed with older water. A single sample from the Judith River bedrock aquifer in the region had a corrected 14 C age of 10.2 ka and elevated NO 3 . Samples from buried valley aquifers with depths of 89 to 123 m contained older waters with ages >38 ka in some locations, indicating that recharge occurred before the last glacial advance over the region. While measuring tracers that cover a wide range of ages is necessary to understand these flow systems, δ 2 H and δ 18 O were less diagnostic because values of modern winter precipitation overlapped with groundwaters with a wide range of ages. The range of ages present in the intertill aquifers of the region indicates that these systems are currently being recharged, which indicates some development of groundwater resources is possible but also points to a need for groundwater protection measures., (© 2025 National Ground Water Association.)
