To investigate the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior of as-cast Fe-20Cr-5.5Al-0.64La stainless steel, a series of compression tests were carried out on a Gleeble-3500 thermal simulator in the temperature range of 1000~1150 °C and the strain rate range of 0.001~1 s−1. The true stress-true strain curves were obtained and their characteristics were analyzed. Using regression analysis, the apparent activation energy for the Fe-20Cr-5.5Al-0.64La stainless steel was estimated to be 300.19 kJ/mol, and the constitutive equation was developed successfully with a hyperbolic sine equation as: ε ˙ = e 21.91 sinh 0.035 σ 3.18 exp − 300190 R T . The critical strain, the peak strain and the strain for the maximum softening rate were identified based on the work hardening rate curves and expressed as a function of the Zener−Hollomon parameter. The kinetic model of DRX was established using the stress−strain data. According to the analysis of the kinetics model and microstructure evolution, the evolution of DRX volume could be described as follows: the volume fraction of DRX grains increased with an increase in strain; at a fixed deformation temperature, the DRX volume fraction was larger at a lower strain rate for the same strain; and the size of DRX grains increased with an increase in temperature or a decrease in strain rate. The effect of cooling rate on the evolution of AlN inclusions precipitated during solidification in FeCrAl stainless steel was investigated using an experimental study and thermodynamic and kinetic calculations. The number and size of AlN inclusions precipitated under different cooling rates were examined with the feature function of the field-emission scanning electron microscope. A model combining micro-segregation and the diffusion-controlled growth model was set up to determine the mechanism of AlN particle growth. The results showed that AlN precipitates in the mushy zone. The size of AlN particles decreases and the number of AlN particles increases with increasing cooling rate, whereas the volume fraction is essentially unchanged. The AlN particles grow during solidification after the content of solutes in molten steel has exceeded the concentration in equilibrium with AlN. The nitrogen content varies significantly with the cooling rate during solidification. Increasing the cooling rate and reducing the nitrogen content in the molten steel can reduce the AlN particle size in FeCrAl alloys as the growth time decreases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interfacial morphology evolution in FeCrAl alloys with varying Al content has been investigated by conducting a series of directional solidification experiments. A comparison between the experimental data and the Hunt-Lu model confirms that cellular spacing widens while dendritic spacing narrows as Al content of the alloy increases. The ratio of upper and lower limit cellular/dendritic spacing λ max /λ min is only weakly dependent on growth velocity and Al content. Under the experimental conditions in the present study, cell to dendrite transition (CDT) occurs at a growth velocity between 25 μm/s and 50 μm/s, and dendrite to cell transition (DCT) is observed at a growth velocity less than 100 μm/s. Critical spacing of CDT λ cd and local solidification time (LST) t f are used to discuss the influence of Al content on CDT and DCT respectively.
