Assessing the interrelationships between belowground, trunk and canopy hydraulics, under various edaphic conditions, is essential to enhance understanding of how grapevine (Vitis vinifera) responds to drought. This work aimed to quantify and compare in situ belowground and trunk hydraulic conductance of the soil-grapevine system to evaluate their coordination with the transpiration control during drought. We simultaneously monitored soil water potential, trunk xylem water potential, canopy xylem water potential, actual transpiration and atmospheric demand to quantify the evolution of belowground, trunk and relative canopy hydraulic conductance. By comparing stomatal regulation at the canopy scale and soil-grapevine system conductance, we assessed their coordination. Transpiration control was triggered by a decrease of belowground hydraulic conductance, and not by xylem cavitation in the trunk. Although the relation between canopy conductance and soil water potential is soil texture specific, where stomata at the canopy scale started to close at less negative soil water potential in sand than in loam, the onset of stomatal closure at the canopy level was at equivalent belowground hydraulic conductance, independently of the soil texture. These findings prove that in situ grapevines coordinate short-term hydraulic mechanisms (e.g., regulation of canopy hydraulic conductance) and longer-term growth (e.g., root:shoot ratio). These belowground and aboveground adjustments are, therefore, soil-texture specific.

ABSTRACTThe gut-to-lung axis is critical during respiratory infections, including influenza A virus (IAV) infection. In the present study, we used high-resolution shotgun metagenomics and targeted metabolomic analysis to characterize influenza-associated changes in the composition and metabolism of the mouse gut microbiota. We observed several taxonomic-level changes on day (D)7 post-infection, including a marked reduction in the abundance of members of the Lactobacillaceae and Bifidobacteriaceae families, and an increase in the abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila. On D14, perturbation persisted in some species. Functional scale analysis of metagenomic data revealed transient changes in several metabolic pathways, particularly those leading to the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), polyamines, and tryptophan metabolites. Quantitative targeted metabolomics analysis of the serum revealed changes in specific classes of gut microbiota metabolites, including SCFAs, trimethylamine, polyamines, and indole-containing tryptophan metabolites. A marked decrease in indole-3-propionic acid (IPA) blood level was observed on D7. Changes in microbiota-associated metabolites correlated with changes in taxon abundance and disease marker levels. In particular, IPA was positively correlated with some Lactobacillaceae and Bifidobacteriaceae species (Limosilactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus animalis) and negatively correlated with Bacteroidales bacterium M7, viral load, and inflammation markers. IPA supplementation in diseased animals reduced viral load and lowered local (lung) and systemic inflammation. Treatment of mice with antibiotics targeting IPA-producing bacteria before infection enhanced viral load and lung inflammation, an effect inhibited by IPA supplementation. The results of this integrated metagenomic-metabolomic analysis highlighted IPA as an important contributor to influenza outcomes and a potential biomarker of disease severity.

When feasible, third-country nationals request within EU Member States’ diplomatic or consular representations a visa on the basis of their need of international protection, in order to be granted legal access to the issuing State’s territory precisely to apply for international protection upon arrival. The focal point is whether States can be required to issue these visas in order to comply with their human rights obligations. This contribution demonstrates that the European Court of Human Rights holding that States do not hold any obligation in the context of humanitarian visa proceedings is unconvincing.

The gut-lung axis is critical during viral respiratory infections such as influenza. Gut dysbiosis during infection translates into a massive drop of microbially produced short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Among them, butyrate is important during influenza suggesting that microbiome-based therapeutics targeting butyrate might hold promises. The butyrate-producing bacterium Faecalibacterium duncaniae (formerly referred to as F. prausnitzii) is an emerging probiotic with several health-promoting characteristics. To investigate the potential effects of F. duncaniae on influenza outcomes, mice were gavaged with live F. duncaniae (A2-165 or I-4574 strains) five days before infection. Supplementation of F. duncaniae was associated with less severe disease, a lower pulmonary viral load, and lower levels of lung inflammation. F. duncaniae supplementation impacted on gut dysbiosis induced by infection, as assessed by 16S rRNA sequencing. Interestingly, F. duncaniae administration was associated with a recovery in levels of SCFAs (including butyrate) in infected animals. The live form of F. duncaniae was more potent that the pasteurized form in improving influenza outcomes. Lastly, F. duncaniae partially protected against secondary (systemic) bacterial infection. We conclude that F. duncaniae might serve as a novel next generation probiotic against acute viral respiratory diseases.

This article aims to bring back into circulation Bourdieu's concept of 'refuge school' to analyse transnational migration for higher education, of privileged students who cannot access the most academically selective institutions. Through the case study of Swiss Hospitality Management Schools (SHMS), I investigate the discursive strategy co-produced by individuals and these institutions to valorise an 'unusual' educational choice abroad. Interviews with staff, alumni and students reveal how SHMS are able to appear prestigious by marketing themselves as the best in their area, unique and elitist. I stress that students' discourses of legitimisation differ according to their home country, which reflects the national hierarchies at play in the field of international higher education. While 'western' students emphasise their personality and emotional intelligence as a perfect fit with the hospitality industry to explain their choice, students from Asia present it as a strategy that affords them a second chance at success.

Abstract Aims We aim to evaluate the costs associated with healthcare resource consumption for chronic heart failure (HF) management in patients allocated to telemonitoring versus standard of care (SC). Methods and results OSICAT‐ECO involved 745 patients from the OSICAT trial (NCT02068118) who were successfully linked to the French national healthcare database through an indirect deterministic data linkage approach. OSICAT compared a telemonitoring programme with SC follow‐up in adults hospitalized for acute HF ≤ 12 months. Healthcare resource costs included those related to hospital and ambulatory expenditure for HF and were restricted to direct costs determined from the French health data system over 18 months of follow‐up. Most of the total costs (69.4%) were due to hospitalization for HF decompensation, followed by ambulatory nursing fees (11.8%). During 18‐month follow‐up, total costs were 2% lower in the telemonitoring versus the SC group, due primarily to a 21% reduction in nurse fees. Among patients with NYHA class III/IV, a 15% reduction in total costs (€3131 decrease) was observed over 18‐month follow‐up in the telemonitoring versus the SC group, with the highest difference in hospital expenditure during the first 6 months, followed by a shift in costs from hospital to ambulatory at 12 months. Conclusions HF hospitalization and ambulatory nursing fees represented most of the costs related to HF. No benefit was observed for telemonitoring versus SC with regard to cost reductions over 18 months. Patients with severe HF showed a non‐significant 15% reduction in costs, largely related to hospitalization for HF decompensation, nurse fees, and medical transport.

BackgroundIn South Africa, diabetes prevalence is expected to reach 5.4 million by 2030. In South Africa, diabetes-related complications severely impact not only patient health and quality of life but also the economy. ObjectiveThe Diabetes Nurse Educator (DNE) study assessed the benefit of adding the MyDiaCare program to standard of care for managing patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes in South Africa. An economic study was also performed to estimate the budget impact of adding MyDiaCare to standard of care for patients with type 2 diabetes older than 19 years treated in the South African private health care sector. MethodsThe real-world DNE study was designed as an observational, retrospective, multicenter, single-group study. Eligible patients were older than 18 years and had at least 6 months of participation in the MyDiaCare program. The MyDiaCare program combines a patient mobile app and a health care professional platform with face-to-face visits with a DNE. The benefit of MyDiaCare was assessed by the changes in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, the proportion of patients achieving clinical and biological targets, adherence to care plans, and satisfaction after 6 months of participating in the MyDiaCare program. A budget impact model was performed using data from the DNE study and another South African cohort of the DISCOVERY study to estimate the economic impact of MyDiaCare. ResultsBetween November 25, 2019, and June 30, 2020, a total of 117 patients (8 with type 1 diabetes and 109 with type 2 diabetes) were enrolled in 2 centers. After 6 months of MyDiaCare, a clinically relevant decrease in mean HbA1c levels of 0.6% from 7.8% to 7.2% was observed. Furthermore, 54% (43/79) of patients reached or maintained their HbA1c targets at 6 months. Most patients achieved their targets for blood pressure (53/79, 67% for systolic and 70/79, 89% for diastolic blood pressure) and lipid parameters (49/71, 69% for low-density-lipoprotein [LDL] cholesterol, 41/71, 58% for high-density-lipoprotein [HDL] cholesterol, and 59/71, 83% for total cholesterol), but fewer patients achieved their targets for triglycerides (32/70, 46%), waist circumference (12/68, 18%), and body weight (13/76, 17%). The mean overall adherence to the MyDiaCare care plan was 93%. Most patients (87/117, 74%) were satisfied with the MyDiaCare program. The net budget impact per patient with type 2 diabetes, older than 19 years, treated in the private sector using MyDiaCare was estimated to be approximately South African Rands (ZAR) 71,023 (US $4089) during the first year of introducing MyDiaCare. ConclusionsThe results of using MyDiaCare program, which combines digital tools for patients and health care professionals with DNE support, suggest that it may be a clinically effective and cost-saving solution for diabetes management in the South African private health care sector.

This study investigates the career paths of 33 graduates from Swiss Hospitality Management schools in China and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), exploring the nuances of international credential valuation. It identifies two key factors influencing access to management positions: (1) the degree of internationalization in major cities, which impacts the significance of international versus local skills and (2) individual cosmopolitan capital's role in shaping local career opportunities. The paper introduces a post‐colonial conceptualization of cosmopolitan capital, encompassing institutionalized, embodied and objectified forms, challenging Western‐centric views. By doing so, it reveals how mechanisms of racialization influence the assessment of international qualifications. In Hong Kong and Shanghai, returning Chinese are prospering in corporate head offices by mobilizing both local/national and international capital, challenging the white privilege of Western managers in this sector. Meanwhile, in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the competition is for a pool of 'international talent', even though being perceived as 'Arab' or 'white' seems to improve career prospects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Globalisation has led to the transformation of the field of higher education, including an increase in international students' mobility and new offers of internationalised educational curricula "at home". This evolution provides new opportunities for both intentional and non-intentional "strategies of educational internationalisation," which are a potentially important part of the social mobility and reproduction of the middle and upper classes. This article investigates the students of Swiss hospitality management schools (SHMSs)--institutions of higher education that are often privately run and characterised by a high degree of internationalisation. We explore the configurations of these students' "cosmopolitan capital" (a combination of cultural, linguistic, social, and institutionalised assets acquired through transnational mobility or exposure to an international environment), and we ask how these configurations vary with regards to their social backgrounds, specifically concerning their proximity to the cultural versus the economic pole of the class structure. We carried out a multiple correspondence analysis of three dimensions of cosmopolitan capital of 381 students, used cluster analysis to identify five configurations of cosmopolitanism and then tested for the social characteristics of these students' parents by using a multinomial regression model. Our results showed various strategies of the accumulation, conversion and legitimation of cosmopolitan capital, and they emphasised the role that this form of capital plays in the mobility and reproduction strategies of these students' families.

Resumo Sob uma perspectiva evolutiva, as interações sexuais entre indivíduos do mesmo sexo foram por muito tempo consideradas um grande paradoxo. Isso por terem persistido no decorrer das gerações apesar de supostamente não oferecerem benefícios reprodutivos diretos, reduzindo, aparentemente, a aptidão individual. Apesar disso, são comuns em muitas espécies animais. Neste artigo, revisaremos algumas das hipóteses funcionais que tentam resolver esse quebra-cabeça evolutivo. Algumas dessas hipóteses consideram essas interações adaptativas, o que significa que trariam benefícios para os indivíduos. Outras as consideram neutras, derivadas de características realmente vantajosas. Por fim, existem as que consideram essas interações como não-adaptativas e potencialmente prejudiciais aos indivíduos. Ao final, abordaremos uma hipótese revolucionária que, de forma inédita, questiona se as interações sexuais envolvendo exclusivamente indivíduos de sexos diferentes seriam realmente o estado basal do comportamento sexual.

Passant de 150 ha (pour 36 exploitations) en 2018 à 300 ha (pour 64 exploitations) à la fin de 2021, la surface viticole wallonne (Belgique – figure 1.a) n’a cessé de croître ces dernières années. Cependant, en 2021, les vignobles wallons ont été fortement touchés par le mildiou (Plasmopara viticola) dû à des conditions météorologiques exceptionnellement humides et fraîches. Cette étude montre que les pertes quantitatives ont été hétérogènes entre les vignobles. Cette variabilité est expliquée principalement par le type de cépage, le mode de production et la gestion liée aux maladies.

In breast cancer (BC), the presence of cancer stem cells (CSCs) has been related to relapse, metastasis, and radioresistance. Radiotherapy (RT) is an extended BC treatment, but is not always effective. CSCs have several mechanisms of radioresistance in place, and some miRNAs are involved in the cellular response to ionizing radiation (IR). Here, we studied how IR affects the expression of miRNAs related to stemness in different molecular BC subtypes. Exposition of BC cells to radiation doses of 2, 4, or 6 Gy affected their phenotype, functional characteristics, pluripotency gene expression, and in vivo tumorigenic capacity. This held true for various molecular subtypes of BC cells (classified by ER, PR and HER‐2 status), and for BC cells either plated in monolayer, or being in suspension as mammospheres. However, the effect of IR on the expression of eight stemness‐ and radioresistance‐related miRNAs (miR‐210, miR‐10b, miR‐182, miR‐142, miR‐221, miR‐21, miR‐93, miR‐15b) varied, depending on cell line subpopulation and clinicopathological features of BC patients. Therefore, clinicopathological features and, potentially also, chemotherapy regimen should be both taken into consideration, for determining a potential miRNA signature by liquid biopsy in BC patients treated with RT. Personalized and precision RT dosage regimes could improve the prognosis, treatment, and survival of BC patients.

Gentle handling seems to elicit positive states in sheep. The study investigated whether spatial distance alters sheep responses to brushing and whether spatial distance is influenced by reactivity. Twenty Romane ewes were assessed in three sessions: in Sessions 1 and 3, one grid separated the test animal from pen mates, with no distance between them, and in Session 2 two grids separated the test animal from pen mates by a distance of about 1.7 m. Ewes had been genetically selected for low (R−) or high (R+) behavioural reactivity to social isolation. Body postures, head orientation, ear postures, closed and half-closed eyes, tail wagging and feeding behaviour, in addition to heart rate (HR) and HR variability, as the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), standard deviation of all normal-to-normal (NN) intervals (SDNN), RMSSD/SDNN ratio and ratio between low-frequency (LF) and high-frequency (HF) powers (LF/HF) were assessed. Data were analysed using generalized linear models and linear mixed models. Session, genetic line and phase (pre-, brushing and post-brushing) were considered fixed effects.
