As a strongly correlated electron material, vanadium dioxide (VO2) has been a focus of research since its discovery in 1959, owing to its well-known metal–insulator transition coupled with a structural phase transition. Recent years have witnessed both exciting discoveries in our understanding of the physics of VO2 and developments in new applications of VO2-related materials. In this article, we review some of these recent progresses on the phase transition mechanism and dynamics, phase diagrams, and imperfection effects, as well as growth and applications of VO2. Our review not only offers a summary of the properties and applications of VO2, but also provides insights into future research of this material by highlighting some of the challenges and opportunities.

Strongly anharmonic phonon properties of CuCl are investigated with inelastic neutron-scattering measurements and first-principles simulations. An unusual quasiparticle spectral peak emerges in the phonon density of states with increasing temperature, in both simulations and measurements, emanating from exceptionally strong coupling between conventional phonon modes. Associated with this strong anharmonicity, the lattice thermal conductivity of CuCl is extremely low and exhibits anomalous, nonmonotonic pressure dependence. We show how this behavior arises from the structure of the phonon dispersions augmenting the phase space available for anharmonic three-phonon scattering processes, and contrast this mechanism with common arguments based on negative Grüneisen parameters. These results demonstrate the importance of considering intrinsic phonon-dispersion structure toward understanding scattering processes and designing new ultralow thermal conductivity materials.

In electrically conductive solids, the Wiedemann-Franz law requires the electronic contribution to thermal conductivity to be proportional to electrical conductivity. Violations of the Wiedemann-Franz law are typically an indication of unconventional quasiparticle dynamics, such as inelastic scattering, or hydrodynamic collective motion of charge carriers, typically pronounced only at cryogenic temperatures. We report an order-of-magnitude breakdown of the Wiedemann-Franz law at high temperatures ranging from 240 to 340 kelvin in metallic vanadium dioxide in the vicinity of its metal-insulator transition. Different from previously established mechanisms, the unusually low electronic thermal conductivity is a signature of the absence of quasiparticles in a strongly correlated electron fluid where heat and charge diffuse independently.

A recently proposed wide-angle velocity selector (WAVES) device for choosing the velocity of detected neutrons after they have been scattered by the sample paves the way for inverted geometry neutron spectrometers with continuously adjustable final neutron wavelength. BWAVES broadband inverted geometry spectrometer proposed for the Second Target Station at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is designed using WAVES to simultaneously probe dynamic processes spanning 4.5 decades in time (energy transfer). This makes BWAVES a uniquely flexible instrument which can be viewed as either a quasielasitc neutron scattering (QENS) spectrometer with a practically unlimited (overlapping with the vibrational excitations) range of energy transfers, or a broadband inelastic vibrational neutron spectrometer with QENS capabilities, including a range of accessible momentum transfer (Q) and a sufficiently high energy resolution at the elastic line. The new capabilities offered by BWAVES will expand the application of neutron scattering in ways not possible with existing neutron spectrometers.

Using inelastic neutron scattering and X-ray diffraction measurements, together with ab initio and machine-learning molecular dynamics simulations, we bring out the distinct nature of anharmonicity in the phonon spectra of MoSe2 and WSe2 relevant to thermal transport and thermal expansion behaviour. We show that the perturbation method, including 4th-order force constants, is insufficient to capture the temperature-dependent explicit anharmonicity. The Green–Kubo method captures the explicit anharmonicity and reproduces the thermal conductivity (κl) with high fidelity. Our mode-resolved calculation reveals that the major contribution (∼90%) to κl is attributed to a small explicit anharmonicity of low-energy phonons. In contrast, these modes exhibit large positive Grüneisen parameters (implicit anharmonicity), causing the large thermal expansion of the material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phase competition underlies many remarkable and technologically important phenomena in transition metal oxides. Vanadium dioxide (V[O.sub.2]) exhibits a first-order metal-insulator transition (MIT) near room temperature, where conductivity is suppressed and the lattice changes from tetragonal to monoclinic on cooling. Ongoing attempts to explain this coupled structural and electronic transition begin with two alternative starting points: a Peierls MIT driven by instabilities in electron-lattice dynamics and a Mott MIT where strong electron-electron correlations drive charge localization (1-10). A key missing piece of the V[O.sub.2] puzzle is the role of lattice vibrations. Moreover, a comprehensive thermodynamic treatment must integrate both entropic and energetic aspects of the transition. Here we report that the entropy driving the MIT in V[O.sub.2] is dominated by strongly anharmonic phonons rather than electronic contributions, and provide a direct determination of phonon dispersions. Our ab initio calculations identify softer bonding in the tetragonal phase, relative to the monoclinic phase, as the origin of the large vibrational entropy stabilizing the metallic rutile phase. They further reveal how a balance between higher entropy in the metal and orbital-driven lower energy in the insulator fully describes the thermodynamic forces controlling the MIT. Spin and lattice are two fundamental degrees of freedom in a solid, and their fluctuations about the equilibrium values in a magnetic ordered crystalline lattice form quasiparticles termed magnons (spin waves) and phonons (lattice waves), respectively. In most materials with strong spin-lattice coupling (SLC), the interaction of spin and lattice induces energy gaps in the spin wave dispersion at the nominal intersections of magnon and phonon modes. Here we use neutron scattering to show that in the two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals honeycomb lattice ferromagnetic CrGeTe3, spin waves propagating within the 2D plane exhibit an anomalous dispersion, damping, and breakdown of quasiparticle conservation, while magnons along the c axis behave as expected for a local moment ferromagnet. These results indicate the presence of dynamical SLC arising from the zero-temperature quantum fluctuations in CrGeTe3, suggesting that the observed in-plane spin waves are mixed spin and lattice quasiparticles fundamentally different from pure magnons and phonons. The quest for advanced superionic materials requires understanding their complex atomic dynamics, but detailed studies of the interplay between lattice vibrations and ionic diffusion remain scarce. Here inelastic and quasielastic neutron scattering measurements in the superionic argyrodite Cu7PSe6 are reported, combined with molecular dynamics (MD) based on ab initio and machine‐learned potentials, providing critical insights into the atomistic mechanisms underlying fast ion conduction. The results reveal how long‐range Cu diffusion is limited by intercluster hopping, controlled by selective anharmonic phonons of the crystalline framework. Further, the Green–Kubo simulations reproduce the ultralow lattice thermal conductivity and identify contributions from mobile ions, phonons, and their cross‐correlations. The mode resolved analysis shows that the thermal conductivity is dominated by low‐energy acoustic phonon modes of the overall crystal framework. The analysis of mode‐resolved spectral functions further show that vibrational modes with significant Cu contributions are strongly damped, corresponding to the breakdown of associated phonon quasiparticles. These results highlight the importance of strongly anharmonic effects in superionic systems, in which the traditional quasiharmonic phonon picture is insufficient, and pave the way toward combining machine‐learning accelerated simulations with neutron scattering experiments to rationalize the complex atomic dynamics underlying ionic and thermal transport. We report a unique hierarchical domain structure in single crystals of (Na1/2Bi1/2)TiO3-xat. % (K1/2Bi1/2)TiO3 for x=5 and 8 by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A high density of polar nano-domains with a lamellar morphology was found, which were self-assembled into a quadrant-like configuration, which then assembled into conventional ferroelectric macrodomains. Studies by high resolution TEM revealed that the polar lamellar regions contained a coexistence of in-phase and anti-phase oxygen octahedral tilt regions of a few nanometers in size. Domain frustration over multiple length scales may play an important role in the stabilization of the hierarchy, and in reducing the piezoelectric response of this Pb-free piezoelectric solid solution. We have performed quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) experiments up to 1243 K and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations to investigate the Na diffusion in various phases of NaAlSiO4 (NASO), namely, low-carnegieite (L-NASO; trigonal), high-carnegieite (H-NASO; cubic) and nepheline (N-NASO; hexagonal) phases. The QENS measurements reveal Na ions localized diffusion behavior in L-NASO and N-NASO, but long-range diffusion behavior in H-NASO. The AIMD simulation supplemented the QENS measurements and showed that excess Na ions in H-NASO enhance the host network flexibility and activate the AlO4/SiO4 tetrahedra rotational modes. These framework modes enable the long-range diffusion of Na across a pathway of interstitial sites. The simulations also show Na diffusion in Na-deficient N-NASO through vacant Na sites along the hexagonal c-axis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AgSbTe2 has long been of interest for thermoelectric applications because of its favorable electronic properties and its low lattice thermal conductivity of ∼0.7W/mK. In this work, we report new findings from a high-resolution transmission electron microscopy study revealing two nanostructures in single crystal Ag1-xSb1+xSb2+x (with x=0, 0.1, 0.2); (i) a rippled natural nanostructure with a period of ∼2.5-5nm and (ii) superlattice ordered nanodomains consistent with cation ordering predicted in previous density functional theory studies. These nanostructures, combined with point-defects, probably serve as sources of scattering for phonons, thereby yielding a low lattice thermal conductivity over a wide temperature range. Intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity (κlat) in superionic conductors is of great interest for energy conversion applications in thermoelectrics. Yet, the complex atomic dynamics leading to superionicity and ultralow thermal conductivity remain poorly understood. Here, we report a comprehensive study of the lattice dynamics and superionic diffusion in AgCrSe2 from energy- and momentum-resolved neutron and X-ray scattering techniques, combined with first-principles calculations. Our results settle unresolved questions about the lattice dynamics and thermal conduction mechanism in AgCrSe2. We find that the heat-carrying long-wavelength transverse acoustic (TA) phonons coexist with the ultrafast diffusion of Ag ions in the superionic phase, while the short-wavelength nondispersive TA phonons break down. Strong scattering of phonon quasiparticles by anharmonicity and Ag disorder are the origin of intrinsically low κlat. The breakdown of short-wavelength TA phonons is directly related to the Ag diffusion, with the vibrational spectral weight associated to Ag oscillations evolving into stochastic decaying fluctuations. Furthermore, the origin of fast ionic diffusion is shown to arise from extended flat basins in the energy landscape and collective hopping behavior facilitated by strong repulsion between Ag ions. Single crystals of CaZn2Sb2, EuZn2Sb2, and YbZn2Sb2 were grown from melts of nominal composition AZn5Sb5 (A = Ca,Eu,Yb) with the excess melt being removed at 1073 K. The electrical transport properties are consistent with those previously reported for polycrystalline samples. This confirms that the p-type carrier concentrations ranging from 2 × 1019 cm-3 to ∼1 × 1020 cm-3 are intrinsic to these materials. Also consistent with transport in polycrystalline materials, the carrier mobility is found to be lowest in CaZn2Sb2, suggesting the trends in mobility and thermoelectric efficiency within these compounds are inherent to the material systems and not due to inhomogeneity or impurities in polycrystalline samples. These results suggest CaZn2Sb2 has the strongest coupling between the doping/defects and the electronic framework. Magnetization measurements reveal an antiferromagnetic transition near 13 K in EuZn2Sb2, and the observed magnetic anisotropy indicates the spins align parallel and anti-parallel to c in the trigonal lattice. Powder neutron diffraction on polycrystalline samples of CaZn2Sb2 and YbZn2Sb2 reveals smooth lattice expansion to 1000 K, with c expanding faster than a. The Debye temperatures calculated from specific heat capacity data and the isotropic displacement parameters are found to correlate with the carrier mobility, with the CaZn2Sb2 displaying the largest Debye temperature and smallest mobility. The energy resolution of the conventional way of measuring a small change in a phonon dispersion curve using neutron scattering is restricted by the relatively coarse intrinsic resolution ellipsoid of the neutron triple‐axis spectrometer (TAS). By implementing inelastic neutron spin echo on the host TAS using the Larmor precession of the neutron spin, the energy resolution of such measurements can be further improved without reducing the resolution ellipsoid. Measurements of the temperature‐dependent phonon energy change are demonstrated using superconducting magnetic Wollaston prisms at the HB‐1 instrument of the High‐Flux Isotope Reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the achievable resolution is <10 µeV. The study of thermoelectric materials spans condensed matter physics, materials science and engineering, and solid-state chemistry. The diversity of the participants and the inherent complexity of the topic mean that it is difficult, if not impossible, for a researcher to be fluent in all aspects of the field. This review, which grew out of a one-week summer school for graduate students, aims to provide an introduction and practical guidance for selected conceptual, synthetic, and characterization approaches and to craft a common umbrella of language, theory, and experimental practice for those engaged in the field of thermoelectric materials. This review does not attempt to cover all major aspects of thermoelectric materials research or review state-of-the-art thermoelectric materials. Rather, the topics discussed herein reflect the expertise and experience of the authors. We begin by discussing a universal approach to modeling electronic transport using Landauer theory. The core sections of the review are focused on bulk inorganic materials and include a discussion of effective strategies for powder and single crystal synthesis, the use of national synchrotron sources to characterize crystalline materials, error analysis, and modeling of transport data using an effective mass model, and characterization of phonon behavior using inelastic neutron scattering and ultrasonic speed of sound measurements. The final core section discusses the challenges faced when synthesizing carbon-based samples and the measuring or interpretation of their transport properties. We conclude this review with a brief discussion of some of the grand challenges and opportunities that remain to be addressed in the study of thermoelectrics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetoelectrics offer tantalizing opportunities for devices coupling ferroelectricity and magnetism but remain difficult to realize. Breakthrough strategies could circumvent the mutually exclusive origins of magnetism and ferroelectricity by exploiting the interaction of multiple phonon modes in geometric improper and hybrid improper ferroelectrics. Yet, the proposed instability of a zone-boundary phonon mode, driving the emergence of ferroelectricity via coupling to a polar mode, remains to be directly observed. Here, we provide previously missing evidence for this scenario in the archetypal improper ferroelectric, yttrium manganite, through comprehensive scattering measurements of the atomic structure and phonons, supported with first-principles simulations. Our experiments and theoretical modeling resolve the origin of the unusual temperature dependence of the polarization and rule out a reported double-step ferroelectric transition. These results emphasize the critical role of phonon anharmonicity in rationalizing lattice instabilities in improper ferroelectrics and show that including these effects in simulations could facilitate the design of magnetoelectrics. The effects of various transition-metal dopants on the electrical and thermal transport properties of Fe1-xMxSi alloys (M = Co, Ir, Os) are reported. The maximum thermoelectric figure of merit ZTmax is improved from 0.007 at 60 K for pure FeSi to ZT = 0.08 at 100 K for 4% Ir doping. A comparison of the thermal conductivity data among Os-, Ir-, and Co-doped alloys indicates strong electron-phonon coupling in this compound. Because of this interaction, the common approximation of dividing the total thermal conductivity into independent electronic and lattice components (κtotal = κelectronic + κlattice) fails for these alloys. The effects of grain size on thermoelectric properties of Fe0.96Ir0.04Si alloys are also reported. The thermal conductivity can be lowered by ∼50% with little or no effect on the electrical resistivity or Seebeck coefficient. This results in ZTmax = 0.125 at 100 K, still approximately a factor of 5 too low for solid-state refrigeration applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the origin of low thermal conductivities in ionic conductors is essential for improving their thermoelectric efficiency, although accompanying high ionic conduction may present challenges for maintaining thermoelectric device integrity. This study investigates the thermal and ionic transport in Cu7PSe6, aiming to elucidate their fundamental origins and correlation with the structural and dynamic properties. Through a comprehensive approach including various characterization techniques and computational analyses, it is demonstrated that the low thermal conductivity in Cu7PSe6 arises from structural complexity, variations in bond strengths, and high lattice anharmonicity, leading to pronounced diffuson transport of heat and fast ionic conduction. It is found that upon increasing the temperature, the ionic conductivity increases significantly in Cu7PSe6, whereas the thermal conductivity remains nearly constant, revealing no direct correlation between ionic and thermal transport. This absence of direct influence suggests innovative design strategies in thermoelectric applications to enhance stability by diminishing ionic conduction, while maintaining low thermal conductivity, thereby linking the domains of solid‐state ionics and thermoelectrics. Thus, this study attempts to clarify the fundamental principles governing thermal and ionic transport in Cu+‐superionic conductors, similar to recent findings in Ag+ argyrodites. The origin of the anomalous anharmonic lattice dynamics of lead telluride is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations with interatomic force constants (IFCs) obtained up to quartic terms from first principles. The calculations reproduce the asymmetry of the radial distribution function and the double peaks of transverse optical phonon previously observed with neutron diffraction and scattering experiments. They are identified to be due to the extremely large nearest-neighbor cubic IFCs in the [100] direction. The outstanding strength of the nearest-neighbor cubic IFCs, compared with the longer-range interactions, explains why the distortion in the radial distribution function is local.
