Abstract

Optoelectronic and spinoptronic technologies benefit from flexible and tunable coherent light sources combining the best properties of nano- and material-engineering to achieve favorable properties such as chiral lasing and low threshold nonlinearities. In this work we demonstrate an electrically wavelength- and polarization-tunable room temperature polariton laser due to emerging photonic spin–orbit coupling. For this purpose, we design an optical cavity filled with both birefringent nematic liquid crystal and an inorganic perovskite. Our versatile growth method of single CsPbBr3 inorganic perovskite crystals in polymer templates allows us to reach strong light–matter coupling and pump-induced condensation of exciton–polaritons resulting in coherent emission of light. The sensitivity of the liquid crystal to external voltage permits electrical tuning of the condensate energy across 7 nm; its threshold power, allowing us to electrically switch it on and off; and its state of polarization sweeping from linear to locally tilted circularly polarized emission.

Abstract

Background The amalgam-associated oral lichenoid lesion ( AAOLL) shows clinical and histopathological features similar to oral lichen planus ( OLP). Molecular researches to improve knowledge of pathogenesis and clinical behavior of AAOLL are still scarce. Objective We investigated for the first time the use of loss of heterozygosity ( LOH) as a molecular approach for genetic characterization of AAOLL in comparison with OLP and evaluated the cell proliferation index. Materials and Methods The sample comprised nine AAOLLs, 10 OLPs, and eight NOMs matched by patients' gender and age. LOH was assessed using polymorphic microsatellite markers at chromosomes 9p (D9S157, D9S162, D9S171), 11q (D11S1369), and 17p ( TP53, AFM238 WF2). Cell proliferation was assessed by immunohistochemical expression of Ki-67 ( MIB-1). The association between LOH and Ki-67 was investigated. Results Loss of heterozygosity occurred in 5/9 AAOLLs and in 2/10 OLPs in at least one marker each, while NOM showed no LOH. Cell proliferation index in AAOLL ranged from 2 to 23%. There was no association between cell proliferation and LOH, independent of the marker. Conclusion Our study shows that the profile of molecular changes in AAOLL and OLP, evaluated by LOH and Ki-67 expression, is similar. Abstract

Liver diseases affect millions of people worldwide, with different etiologies between countries. The incidence of viral hepatitis is waning as a result of advances in prevention and new therapies. In contrast, with the improvement in living standards, the incidence of metabolic liver diseases including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and alcohol-related liver disease is set to rise. On the 14th of May 2022 the Liver Unit Team of Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Integrata of Verona organized a "Liver Day" for the general population with educational and preventive aim. Using a mobile medical center with an ultrasound scanner, a fibroscan and HCV test kits, 110 people were visited and screened. Many other people had only information. From the anamnestic data collected, alcohol consumption (> 100 g/week) was detected in 36.5%, hypertension in treatment in 39%, dyslipidemia in 35.6%, type 2 diabetes in 6.7% of our population. We confirmed HCV Ab in 6 patients, nobody with unknown HCV was detected. Based on these collected data, a sample of people was subjected to a fibroscan method and/or an abdominal ultrasound and 40% had steatosis. MAFLD was detected in 28.7% of cases. Liver stiffness (LS) measured with Fibroscan was 5.11±1.28 kPa; only one patient had LS> 8 kPa. LS was higher in MAFLD group. MAFLD patients (n=30) had higher BMI (median BMI 28.3 (IQR 5.10) vs 23.7 (IQR 4.50) and higher waist circumference (median 99±14.18 vs 87±15.20 cm). Data from Verona general population confirms the relevant prevalence of risk factors (alcohol and MAFLD) which can lead to chronic liver disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Two-dimensional semiconductors are considered intriguing materials for photonic applications, thanks to their stunning optical properties and the possibility to manipulate them at the nanoscale. In this review, we focus on transition metal dichalcogenides and low-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites, which possess the same characteristics related to planar confinement of their excitons: large binding energies, wide exciton extension, and high oscillator strength. We describe their optoelectronic properties and their capability to achieve strong coupling with light, with particular attention to polariton-polariton interactions. These aspects make them very attractive for polaritonic devices working at room temperature, in view of the realization of all-optical logic circuits in low-cost and easy-to-synthesize innovative materials.
