Abstract This research focused on the impact of having one or more dogs on romantic relationships among college-age cohabiting couples. One hundred and eighteen romantic cohabitants, among whom either or both partners had a dog, from three universities completed an anonymous, voluntary 41-item survey. Quantitative data included the bulk of the items analyzed using Version 25 of the IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) program. Qualitative data were generated using three open-ended questions and analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. Over three-fourths (77%) of the respondents reported a positive effect, 17% reported a neutral impact, and 6% reported a negative outcome. The positive effects included “companionship” (97%), “relationship enhancer” (88%), and “like having a child together” (76%). Negative outcomes included jealousy, less time spent together, and stress. Men were significantly more likely to report that their partner was jealous of the dog, while women were significantly more likely to talk to their dogs about problems. Whites, more than racial-ethnic minorities, typically reported a more positive than negative effect of dogs on their romantic relationships. The study emphasizes the positive impact of a dog(s) on the romantic relationship of cohabiting couples and reveals some of the negative impacts of living with one or more dogs on young cohabitating couples’ relationships. The findings provide relatively new insights into the influence of gender and race-ethnicity on dogs and cohabiting couples and suggest areas for further research.

As romantic relationships begin and evolve, it is sometimes the case that partners are discrepant in their attraction to, love for, and commitment to each other. Data were collected from 460 undergraduates who completed a 40 item Internet survey on the various types of discrepancies and outcomes for their respective relationships. Results revealed that half of participants had been in a discrepant relationship in which they were more attracted to, in love with, and committed to their partner and half were less attracted, in love and committed than a partner in a current or past relationship. Men were significantly more likely than women to report that they had been in a discrepant relationship in which they were more in love with their partner. Being more attracted and less attracted, in love with, and committed was positively associated with infidelity. Depression was positively associated with being more or less attracted to, in love with and committed. Alcohol/drug use was positively associated with being more attracted and in love with a partner, as well as being less attracted and committed to a partner. Of discrepant relationships that ended, 45% were by the respondent, 20% mutually, and 11% by the partner. Of discrepant relationships that continued, 44% of the respondents reported that the discrepancies did not matter and that the respondents were happy despite the discrepancies.

Abstract Background The salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, is an ectoparasitic copepod which feeds on the mucus, skin and blood of salmonid fish species. The parasite can persist on the surface of the fish without any effective control being exerted by the host immune system. Other ectoparasitic invertebrates produce compounds in their saliva, excretions and/or secretions which modulate the host immune responses allowing them to remain on or in the host during development. Similarly, compounds are produced in secretions of L. salmonis which are thought to be responsible for immunomodulation of the host responses as well as other aspects of crucial host-parasite interactions. Methods In this study we have identified and characterised the proteins in the excretory/secretory (E/S) products of L. salmonis using LC-ESI-MS/MS. Results In total 187 individual proteins were identified in the E/S collected from adult lice and pre-adult sea lice. Fifty-three proteins, including 13 serine-type endopeptidases, 1 peroxidase and 5 vitellogenin-like proteins were common to both adult and pre-adult E/S products. One hundred and seven proteins were identified in the adult E/S but not in the pre-adult E/S and these included serine and cysteine-type endopeptidases, vitellogenins, sphingomyelinase and calreticulin. A total of 27 proteins were identified in pre-adult E/S products but not in adult E/S. Conclusions The assigned functions of these E/S products and the potential roles they play in host-parasite interaction is discussed.

Background: The research examined an innovative volunteer doula service, established in one city and rolled out to four other sites. The initiative offers support to disadvantaged women with the aim of enhancing well-being and improving the uptake of health services. Aims: The project addressed four broad questions: implications for the NHS; health and psychosocial impacts for women; impacts on doulas; and the processes of implementing and sustaining a volunteer doula service for disadvantaged childbearing women. Design: A mixed-methods study using interviews, focus groups and questionnaires to obtain primary data from a range of stakeholders. Existing data sets were used to examine clinical and public health outcomes and contributed to a cost–consequence analysis. A realistic evaluation perspective supported investigation of a complex intervention in its real-world context. Outcomes: We assessed impacts, perceptions and experiences of women, doulas, midwives and heads of midwifery. Clinical and public health outcomes included epidural use, rates of caesarean section, low birthweight, admission to neonatal unit, smoking and breastfeeding. The costs of running a doula service and cost implications for the NHS were calculated. Data sources: Data sources included the service database at the original site; available outcomes were compared against those in reference data sets. Women completed questionnaires and a small number participated in focus groups. Doulas contributed information through focus groups, postal questionnaires and telephone interviews. Staff, commissioners and local champions of doula services provided information through interviews and focus groups. Midwives and heads of midwifery took part in focus groups and telephone interviews respectively. Results: Although doula-supported women in the original site used fewer epidurals and generally required fewer caesarean sections than women in reference groups, these differences were not statistically significant. The utility of comparisons is constrained by the absence of parity information from comparison data. For outcomes with a low incidence, data were pooled across years; this included comparisons for low birthweight and admission to neonatal units where no significant differences were observed. Reductions in rates of smoking at birth were not consistently statistically significantly different from available comparators. More doula-supported women initiated breastfeeding and were continuing at 6 weeks. Initiation rates were significantly higher for most years than in reference groups and significantly higher for continued breastfeeding for all years. The majority of women who accepted doula support valued it highly for its continuity and doulas’ availability and flexibility, being listened to by someone who was non-judgemental and having fears allayed, together with building self-esteem. Women also appreciated volunteer doulas for the knowledgeable companionship, relief of isolation and help with accessing services. Nearly all doulas enjoyed the role and felt well prepared by their training and the majority felt well supported. Midwifery staff appreciated volunteer doulas for their commitment and support to women. Doula services’ challenges in implementing and sustaining their services included funding, balancing referrals and volunteer availability, and relationships with other organisations. The costs of providing a doula service varied considerably, with some costs absorbed by host organisations. Some improved clinical outcomes point to potential cost benefits to the NHS although these were less than the per birth costs of the service in the original site. Conclusions: This is the largest independent evaluation of volunteer doula support in the UK. Limitations include lower than optimal questionnaire response rates and the relatively small sample size available for outcome measurement. Our findings of positive psychosocial impacts reflect those reported among women in other settings, where women may not have access to midwifery support. Significant improvements in maintaining breastfeeding were particularly striking. Volunteer doulas were highly regarded by women and doula support was accepted by NHS midwives. Doulas enjoyed the role and reported positive impacts for various areas of their lives. Funding was a continuing challenge for doula services. Protected areas (PAs) are a cornerstone of conservation efforts and now cover nearly 13% of the world's land surface, with the world's governments committed to expand this to 17%. However, as biodiversity continues to decline, the effectiveness of PAs in reducing the extinction risk of species remains largely untested. We analyzed PA coverage and trends in species' extinction risk at globally significant sites for conserving birds (10,993 Important Bird Areas, IBAs) and highly threatened vertebrates and conifers (588 Alliance for Zero Extinction sites, AZEs) (referred to collectively hereafter as 'important sites'). Species occurring in important sites with greater PA coverage experienced smaller increases in extinction risk over recent decades: the increase was half as large for bird species with>50% of the IBAs at which they occur completely covered by PAs, and a third lower for birds, mammals and amphibians restricted to protected AZEs (compared with unprotected or partially protected sites). Globally, half of the important sites for biodiversity conservation remain unprotected (49% of IBAs, 51% of AZEs). While PA coverage of important sites has increased over time, the proportion of PA area covering important sites, as opposed to less important land, has declined (by 0.45-1.14% annually since 1950 for IBAs and 0.79-1.49% annually for AZEs). Thus, while appropriately located PAs may slow the rate at which species are driven towards extinction, recent PA network expansion has under-represented important sites. We conclude that better targeted expansion of PA networks would help to improve biodiversity trends.

Hedonism, as compared to the sexual values of relativism and absolutism, involves sexual behavior based on the pursuit of pleasure without the requirement for love and/or commitment. Analysis of responses to a 37 item Internet questionnaire completed by 391 undergraduate women revealed that thirty-one percent self-identified as being hedonistic (40% had hooked up). When compared to absolutist and relativistic women, hedonistic women were significantly (p < .000) less likely to require a committed relationship as a context for sex, less likely to be in a reciprocal love relationship and less likely to feel guilty/feel regret following a hookup encounter. Hedonistic women were also more likely to feel more comfortable making the first move in a relationship than absolutist and relativistic women. The primary mechanisms of stigma management by these hedonistic women were to believe in gender equality and to avoid discussing their sexual behavior with others who might disapprove. Symbolic interaction is used to interpret the data. Implications and limitations of the study are identified.

The use of uncemented hip arthroplasty prostheses with ceramic articulations are popular, especially in the young, because of a perceived reduction in wear. We highlight a complication of ceramic on polyethylene articulating couples not previously described in the Furlong replacement. Small populations may be expected to harbour less genetic variation than large populations, but the relation between census size (N), effective population size (Ne), and genetic diversity is not well understood. We compared microsatellite variation in four small peripheral Atlantic salmon populations from the Iberian peninsula and three larger populations from Scotland to test whether genetic diversity was related to population size. We also examined the historical decline of one Iberian population over a 50-year period using archival scales in order to test whether a marked reduction in abundance was accompanied by a decrease in genetic diversity. Estimates of effective population size (Ne) calculated by three temporal methods were consistently low in Iberian populations, ranging from 12 to 31 individuals per generation considering migration, and from 38 to 175 individuals per generation if they were regarded as closed populations. Corresponding Ne/N ratios varied from 0.02 to 0.04 assuming migration (mean=0.03) and from 0.04 to 0.18 (mean=0.10) assuming closed populations. Population bottlenecks, inferred from the excess of heterozygosity in relation to allelic diversity, were detected in all four Iberian populations, particularly in those year classes derived from a smaller number of returning adults. However, despite their small size and declining status, Iberian populations continue to display relatively high levels of heterozygosity and allelic richness, similar to those found in larger Scottish populations. Furthermore, in the R. Asón no evidence was found for a historical loss of genetic diversity despite a marked decline in abundance during the last five decades. Thus, our results point to two familiar paradigms in salmonid conservation: (1)␣endangered populations can maintain relatively high levels of genetic variation despite their small size, and (2) marked population declines may not necessarily result in a significant loss of genetic diversity. Although there are several explanations for such results, microsatellite data and physical tagging suggest that high levels of dispersal and asymmetric gene flow have probably helped to maintain genetic diversity in these peripheral populations, and thus to avoid the negative consequences of inbreeding. Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD) is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease that can arise spontaneously, genetically, or be acquired through iatrogenic exposure. Most patients die within a year of symptom onset. It is rare, affecting 1–2 per million per year, and the majority of cases are sporadic. Primary angiitis of the central nervous system (PACNS) is also rare, affecting 2.4 per million per year. We present a case of an unusually long clinical course of CJD, almost five years, which began with symptoms of apraxia. The patient had biopsy-proven PACNS 16 years prior to clinical presentation, and the site of biopsy was the left parietal lobe. Autopsy revealed multicentric prion plaques in the cerebellum, in the setting of normal genetic testing. The presence of plaques in the cerebellum, and prior neurosurgery, raises the possibility of iatrogenic exposure. We present the details of this case, including pathology from the original biopsy and final autopsy, as well as a review of relevant cases in the literature.

Real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC), a highly specific and sensitive assay able to detect low levels of the disease-inducing isoform of the prion protein (PrP(d)) in brain tissue biopsies and cerebral spinal fluid, has great potential to become a method for diagnosing prion disease ante mortem. In order to standardize the assay method for routine analysis, an understanding of how physical and chemical factors affect the stability of the recombinant prion protein (rPrP) substrate and the RT-QuIC assay's sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility is required. In this study, using sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease brain homogenate to seed the reactions and an in vitro-expressed recombinant prion protein, hamster rPrP, as the substrate, the following factors affecting the RT-QuIC assay were examined: salt and substrate concentrations, substrate storage, and pH. Results demonstrated that both the generation of the quality and quantities of rPrP substrate critical to the reaction, as well as the RT-QuIC reaction itself required strict adherence to specific physical and chemical conditions. Once optimized, the RT-QuIC assay was confirmed to be a very specific and sensitive assay method for sCJD detection. Findings in this study indicate that further optimization and standardization of RT-QuIC assay is required before it can be adopted as a routine diagnostic test.

The difficulty in developing a diagnostic assay for Creutzfeldt - Jakob disease (CJD) and other transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) stems in part from the fact that the infectious agent is an aberrantly folded form of an endogenous cellular protein. This precludes the use of the powerful gene based technologies currently applied to the direct detection of other infectious agents. To circumvent this problem our research objective has been to identify a set of proteins exhibiting characteristic differential abundance in response to TSE infection. The objective of the present study was to assess the disease specificity of differentially abundant urine proteins able to identify scrapie infected mice. Two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis was used to analyze longitudinal collections of urine samples from both prion-infected mice and a transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. The introduction of fluorescent dyes, that allow multiple samples to be co-resolved and visualized on one two dimensional gel, have increased the accuracy of this methodology for the discovery of robust protein biomarkers for disease. The accuracy of a small panel of differentially abundant proteins to correctly classify an independent naïve sample set was determined. The results demonstrated that at the time of clinical presentation the differential abundance of urine proteins were capable of identifying the prion infected mice with 87% sensitivity and 93% specificity. The identity of the diagnostic differentially abundant proteins was investigated by mass spectrometry.
