The magnetic properties and the possible interaction mechanisms of anisotropic soft- and hard-magnetic multilayers have been investigated by altering the thickness of different kinds of spacer layers. The metal Ta and the insulating oxides MgO, Cr2O3 have been chosen as spacer layers to investigate the characteristics of the interactions between soft- and hard-magnetic layers in the anisotropic Nd-Dy-Fe-Co-B/α-Fe multilayer system. The dipolar and exchange interaction between hard and soft phases are evaluated with the help of the first order reversal curve method. The onset of the nucleation field and the magnetization reversal by domain wall movement are also evident from the first-order-reversal-curve measurements. Reversible/irreversible distributions reveal the natures of the soft- and hard-magnetic components. Incoherent switching fields are observed and the calculations show the semiquantitative contributions of hard and soft components to the system. An antiferromagnetic spacer layer will weaken the interaction between ferromagnetic layers and the effective interaction length decreases. As a consequence, the dipolar magnetostatic interaction may play an important role in the long-range interaction in anisotropic multilayer magnets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An investment-oriented environment and its regulations are the inevitable background when major economies face investment-driven economic development. While technological innovation helps form a compensatory or cost-based development path for economic growth, human capital plays a regulatory role in this development path as the largest dynamic and unstable variable. This research thus conducts a regulatory framework with an empirical study of the threshold effect from different levels of human capital investment on technological innovation and economic growth in four industries. The main conclusions are as follows: 1)We divide technological innovation caused by investment-based environmental regulation into active technological innovation.Passive technological innovation and subsequently identify the quantitative change effect of technological innovation on economic growth under investment-based environmental regulation. 2)Taking the human capital of different industries as threshold variables, we examine the threshold effect of investment-based environmental regulations and confirm the threshold value of different industries. 3)Through lagging second-order stability analysis, we basically solve the endogenous problem of investment-based environmental regulations, in which the relevant estimation conclusions appear more robust. This article studies the impact of options to adjust the performance of commercial banks from agency costs. In the shareholding structure of the adjustment process, considering changes in agency costs, only in agency costs no more than the commercial banks when new results, the company will have to adjust agent the cost of power stealth measure more just by reflecting the size of the incremental results. In addition, equity restructuring costs are the basis of agency governance and ownership structure has an important impact on agency costs. Through a few selected China 14 listed commercial banks' 2007-2012 data, we show that the impact of performance of commercial banks on the proportion of the company's largest shareholders is generally more significant; however, the impact of equity restriction on commercial banks was not as significant, as seen from the application of balanced panel data model analysis and the test results. However, the agency costs of commercial bank performance were significant also in a general state, indicating that equity adjustment activities of commercial banks' cost perspective agency under the commercial bank performance significant changes are not large. We report a direct observation of magnetic domain evolution near the Verwey transition (TV) in Fe3O4 films. We found the stripe domains in the Fe3O4/Mg2TiO4 film while the irregular domains in the Fe3O4/MgO film and the similar characters of magnetic domains in the vicinity of TV for both samples: the bigger domain size and the higher contrast of the phase signal below TV and the more disordered domain images at TV. Remarkably, the magnetic behaviors can be well understood and the domain-wall energy and the demagnetizing energy can be calculated from the magnetic domains near TV in the Fe3O4/Mg2TiO4 film. Our work presents a demonstration of the low-temperature magnetic domains and gives a new perspective to understand the Verwey transition in Fe3O4 thin films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetic vortices in patterned nanocomposite structures have been studied. A double-vortex structure consisting of two vortex cores with opposite chiralities and two edge half-vortices is realized in a micron-size circular disk, which consists of [Co/Pd]7/Ru/Py. A systemic study of the magnetization reversal of a double-vortex state and a single vortex state in an out-of-plane applied field has been performed by means of magnetic force microscopy. It is found that the interlayer exchange and dipolar interactions are critical for nucleation and annihilation of the double-vortex and the single vortex states. Micromagnetic simulations prove that the double-vortex state can stably exist in a patterned nanocomposite structure. Magnetic configurations ranging from the double-vortex and single vortex states to other multidomain states and the in-plane single-domain state are observed. The dependence of the magnetic configuration on the thickness of the soft-magnetic layer and spacer layer is presented in an experimental phase diagram. The results can significantly widen the practical applications of vortices on the three-dimensional spintronic memory and logic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: Nucleosomes are the basic packaging units of chromatin, determinants of nucleosome organization playing a major role in genome packaging. Although a wide variety of nucleosome organization factors have been considered separately across the whole or partial human genomic regions, it is unclarified that what the major determinants and their roles in scale are when being put all together. And it is also unknown that what the similarities and differences of determinants between different genomic features such as genes of different expression levels or genomic regions with different functions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We detected commonalities and characteristics of nucleosome positioning determinants in different genes and regions with 1591486 nucleosomes identified by ourselves in human CD4+ cell. RESULTS: It was found that a distinct linear combination of about 20 nucleosome-positioning factors explained nucleosome occupancy for each genomic feature. In those linear combinations, 6 DNA sequence attributes (Roll stiffness and Twist stiffness, CT and AG, CG and shift stiffness) and a histone modification (H4R3me2) are shared. And other factors are varied. Roll stiffness and Twist stiffness are the most important features. They are dominant, alone explaining 96.61-98.45% of the positioning weight in each genomic feature. The characteristic factors in each combination are larger in number, but weaker in power. Numerous histone modifications play a subtle role for nucleosome positioning. CONCLUSIONS: The present study provides a more accurate positioning nucleosome-map with higher resolution and a dramatically simplified means to predict and understand intrinsic nucleosome occupancy in different genomic features in human CD4+ cell. Roll stiffness and Twist stiffness are the two most important determinants in all genomic features. They may dominate because they both determine the degree of DNA bending and correlates with many other DNA structural characteristics. Bulk multiferroic ScMnO3 is the stable hexagonal phase, and it is very difficult to prepare its perovskite orthorhombic phase even under high pressure. We fabricated the orthorhombic ScMnO3 thin film by pulsed laser deposition through suitable substrate LaAlO3 and found that nano-scale twin-like domains are naturally formed in the thin film. Magnetic properties of the orthorhombic ScMnO3 thin films show that, besides normal antiferromagnetic ordering at 47 K, an anomalous magnetic transition occurs at 27K for 60 nm film and at 36K for 150 nm film only along the c-axis, which is absent in the ab-plane. Moreover, the second magnetic transition for both films is suppressed when the applied field increases from 1 kOe to 10 kOe. In addition, the ferromagnetism shows up in both films at 10 K, and saturation magnetization increases dramatically in 60 nm film compared with 150 nm film. We propose that the second magnetic transition might be more of lattice strain effect and also related to magnetism-induced ferroelectric polarization in orthorhombic RMnO3 thin films and low-temperature ferromagnetic properties in our films originate from the nano-scale twin-like domain structure. We investigated gene expression in embryonic stem (ES) cells, induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, and fibroblasts. Microarray expression data sets obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus were analyzed using the Partek software. Human genes from ES cells, iPS cells, and fibroblasts were ranked from low to high according to their expression levels. The gene expression mode in iPS cells was much more like the mode in ES cells, and the expression levels of fibroblast genes fluctuated more dramatically than those of iPS and ES cells. The number of genes with significantly different expression was lower in the iPS and ES cells. Several genes with the expression levels that were significantly different between ES and iPS cells were found, including LEFTY2, DLK1, and NLRP2. Four genes belonged to the low expression category in fibroblasts with the high expression category occurring in ES cells, i.e., HESRG, PROM1, NTS, and LRRN1. Analyzing the expression of these genes is helpful to elucidate the mechanisms of cell fate regulation and efficiently obtain iPS cells.

Identification of epigenetic alterations in tumors has become a common method for identifying genes critical to cancer development and progression. Thus, we identified DNA methylation alterations on the genome scale during lung adenocarcinoma (LADC) progression to understand the carcinogenic process and identify clinically relevant biomarkers. We found that epigenetic alterations in LADC mainly occur during the early stage of LADC progression, and there are no significant methylation differences between early-stage and late-stage LADCs. This suggests that DNA methylation alterations characterize a turning point of early events in LADC progression. By comparing DNA methylation between early-stage LADCs and normal lung tissues, we further identified 940 genes with significant alterations in DNA methylation. Sixty-seven genes were found to exhibit strong correlation between methylation alterations and expression changes, based on associated gene expression data. According to gene ontology analysis, these genes are involved in lung development, respiratory system development, cell cycle, histidine metabolism, the Wnt signaling pathway, and the p53 signaling pathway. We also found that genes on chromosome 18 most frequently showed promoter hypermethylation. Moreover, we found that LADC-associated DNA hypomethylation occurred preferentially at neither histone H3 lysine 4 nor histone H3 lysine 27 mark domains in human embryonic stem cells (NMDs) and that hypomethylation of NMDs was associated with a poor prognostic signature in LADC. Our findings have important implications for LADC progression because of the identification of novel epigenetic biomarkers potentially involved in early-stage LADC and for establishing the importance of NMD DNA hypomethylation for predicting prognosis in LADC.

Objective: To compare CA 125 levels after three courses of cisplatin-based chemotherapy and the results of second-look surgery., Methods and Materials: From January 1990 to December 1996, the medical records of 72 patients diagnosed with epithelial ovarian cancer were reviewed. After initial staging surgery, all patients received cisplatin-based chemotherapy. Prior to each course of chemotherapy, patients underwent physical exams and serum CA 125 was obtained. After 6 courses of chemotherapy, if CA 125 levels were normal (< or = 35 IU/ml) and there was no clinical evidence of disease, the patient was offered second-look surgery. The sensitivity, specificity, and negative predicative value of CA 125 levels after 3 courses of chemotherapy and results of second-look surgery were calculated. Survival curves were constructed using Kaplan-Meier actuarial methods., Results: Seventy-two patients were enrolled in the study. After completing 3 courses of chemotherapy, 43 out of 72 patients were reported to have normal CA 125 levels and were offered second-look surgery. Forty-six out of 72 patients underwent second-look surgery, 28 patients (60%) were reported to have positive second-look surgery. Of the patients with normal CA 125 levels after 3 courses of chemotherapy, 23 patients (57.5%) had a positive second-look surgery. The sensitivity and specificity of CA 125 values after 3 courses of chemotherapy were 17.9% and 94.7%, respectively and the negative predicative value was 43.9%. Patients with normal CA 125 values after 3 courses of chemotherapy had a significantly improved survival compared to those who failed to normalized their CA 125 levels after three courses of chemotherapy., Conclusion: Normalization of CA 125 after 3 courses of chemotherapy is a poor predicator of findings at second-look surgery.
