Metals exhibit diverse failure behavior under impact loading. In the context of fragment warheads, preformed fragments also undergo fracture and crushing behaviors when subjected to explosive loading, potentially diminishing the terminal effect and damage capability of the warhead. To address this issue, metal disks of varying impedance were applied to the far-exploding surface of the fragments, and their influence on fragment deformation behavior was examined. The experimental results revealed that when metal disks were attached to the far-exploding surface of the fragments, their fracture behavior changed, and the recovered fragments remained intact axially. Additionally, the axial length of the recovered fragments decreased as the impedance of the metal disk on the far-exploding surface increased. To elucidate the underlying mechanism of this experimental phenomenon, the variation in fragment pressure during the propagation process was calculated by employing theories of planar detonation waves and shock wave propagation in the study. The results indicate that when the impedance of the metal disks on the far-exploding surface is higher than that of the fragments, it leads to an increase in internal pressure and the formation of a compression zone within the fragments, thereby preventing fragment fracture. Conversely, lower impedance results in the formation of a tensile effect within the fragments. The theoretical and experimental results were consistent. Finally, based on the dimensional analysis, the dimensionless models were established to predict fragment deformation and internal pressure values influenced by the metal disk on the far-exploding surface. Rolling friction is of great importance for many applications, such as tires and conveyor belts. We study the rolling friction for hard cylinders rolling on flat rubber sheets. The rolling friction depends on the number of rolling cycles, the rolling speed, and the temperature. We show that when the rubber is cooled down below the glass transition temperature, the deformations of the rubber surface are frozen-in, resulting in a non-flat rolling track where uphill and downhill rolling movements strongly affect the rolling force. The experimental data are analyzed using the Persson rolling friction theory; good agreement with the experiments is obtained when the non-linear (strain-softening) properties of the viscoelastic modulus are taken into account. The adsorption of particles onto fluid membranes can lead to membrane-mediated interactions between particles that promote their self-assembly and lead to changes in membrane morphology. However, in contrast with rigid particles, relatively little is known about deformable particles, which introduce additional complexities due to the mutual deformability of the particles and the membrane. Here, we use Monte Carlo simulations and umbrella sampling to investigate the equilibrium properties of hinge-like particles adsorbed on membrane vesicles by means of anisotropic, attractive interactions. We vary the hinge stiffness, adhesive area fraction, patterning of adhesive regions, and number of adsorbed particles. Depending on their properties, isolated particles can conform to the vesicle, induce invaginations of the membrane, or exhibit multistable behavior in which they sample distinct classes of configurations due to the interplay of particle and membrane deformations. With two adsorbed particles, the properties of the particles can be used to promote aggregation, bias the particles to different parts of the vesicle, or stabilize the coexistence of both cases. With multiple adsorbed particles, the number and type control their organization and collective impact on the vesicle, which can adopt shapes ranging from roughly spherical to dumbbell-like and multi-lobed. Our results highlight how modifying the mechanical properties and patterned adhesion of deformable particles, which is possible with DNA nanotechnology, influences their self-assembly and the resulting shapes of both the particles and vesicles. A gradient nano-grained (GNG) structure demonstrates satisfactory surface strength. However, the underlying mechanism responsible for its strengthening lacks sufficient research. To explain how gradient nano-grained structures improve surface strength in detail, large-scale parallel molecular dynamics simulations are utilized in this study to investigate the mechanical deformation behavior of BCC tungsten with varying grain sizes during spherical nanoindentation. The findings suggest that a well-designed gradient structure can promote rational plasticity and an appropriate distribution of internal atomic stress. The critical point of maximum stress and hardness is observed when the initial grain size is 4.5 nm, with an average grain size of 7.1 nm. The interaction between grain boundary slip and migration in small grains, along with the enhanced activity of grain boundary dislocations in large grains, collectively contributes to the enhancement of the strength and hardness of the GNG structure. Compared with a homogeneous nano-grained structure, the gradient nano-grained structure exhibits a more rational distribution of dislocations and stress relaxation effects to enhance strength. The present work utilizes the molecular dynamics nanoindentation method to study GNG materials, providing a methodology for investigating the surface strengthening effects of GNG structures at the atomic scale and effectively revealing potential mechanisms for resisting surface deformation in GNG structures. We report on viscous adhesion measurements conducted in sphere-plane geometry between a rigid sphere and soft surfaces submerged in silicone oils. Increasing the surface compliance leads to a decrease in the adhesive strength due to elastohydrodynamic deformation of the soft surface during debonding. The force-displacement and fluid film thickness-time data are compared to an elastohydrodynamic model that incorporates the force measuring spring and finds good agreement between the model and data. We calculate the pressure distribution in the fluid and find that, in contrast to debonding from rigid surfaces, the pressure drop is non-monotonic and includes the presence of stagnation points within the fluid film when a soft surface is present. In addition, viscous adhesion in the presence of a soft surface leads to a debonding process that occurs via a peeling front (located at a stagnation point), even in the absence of solid–solid contact. As a result of mass conservation, the elastohydrodynamic deformation of the soft surface during detachment leads to surfaces that come closer as the surfaces are separated. During detachment, there is a region with fluid drainage between the centerpoint and the stagnation point, while there is fluid infusion further out. Understanding and harnessing the coupling between lubrication pressure, elasticity, and surface interactions provides material design strategies for applications such as adhesives, coatings, microsensors, and biomaterials. Accurate monitoring of mining three-dimensional deformation plays an important role in analyzing the subsidence mechanism and assessing potential geological hazards in the mining area. This paper combines TerraSAR-X and RADARSAT-2 heterogeneous SAR images employing MSBAS technology to obtain the three-dimensional time-series of deformation of the 132 610 working face in the Fengfeng mine from December 2015 to February 2016. The monitoring results show that the maximum surface subsidence and the subsidence rate during the monitoring period were –243 mm and 4.42 mm/day, and the maximum east-west horizontal movement was –80~30 mm. The surface subsidence basin is in the active stage, which is prone to pose a threat to the safety of the surrounding structures. Comparison with the leveling data shows that the root-mean-square deviation of the vertical deformation obtained by MSBAS technology is 10.7 mm, and the accuracy can reach the centimeter level. Meanwhile, based on the vertical deformation obtained by MSBAS technology, combined with the proportionality relationship between horizontal movement and tilt, the north-south horizontal movement was estimated as –80~70 mm, which provided a solution for obtaining the north-south horizontal movement of the mining area by InSAR. Analysis of the three-dimensional time-series of the surface deformation at the main sections shows that the surface deformation features during the mining process of the 132610 working face match well with the general model of mining subsidence, but the working face inclination angle has an influence on the surface deformation. In order to investigate how to achieve volume plastic flow and what kind of deformation mechanism in the Vickers indentation of a magnesium oxide single crystal, the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images were recorded. Significant crystal plane deviation was observed in the contact area between the sample and the indenter, while there was almost no deviation in other plastic zones. It was found that the deflecting lattice interface was realized by dislocation accumulation, and incoherent in the interface is coordinated by mismatch and multi-atom layer stacking. Some narrow holes in which both ends connected to boundaries were observed, and formation of the narrow holes is due to fracture and then re-bonding under high stress. There exists an amorphous trend in the area next to the indenter, which is generated by high stress extrusion. The phenomenon of liquid sloshing inside partially filled tank trucks adversely affects the stability of the tank trucks. In order to mitigate the negative effects of liquid sloshing inside the tank, this study proposes several baffle configurations and investigates their anti-slosh effect on liquid sloshing. First, a numerical model of liquid sloshing is established. Then, the effectiveness of the numerical model is validated by comparing the results of free surface deformation, wall pressure, and sloshing frequency obtained from simulations and experiments under identical conditions. During the research process, it was found that the air pressure formed in locally sealed spaces within the tank also plays a positive role in suppressing liquid sloshing. The research results indicate that, under low fill volumes, baffles fixed at the bottom of the tank are more effective in suppressing liquid sloshing inside the tank, while under high fill volumes, baffles fixed at the top of the tank are more effective. Considering the tank's airtightness, the air pressure formed in locally sealed spaces within the tank plays an important role in suppressing liquid sloshing when baffles are fixed at the top of the tank and the fill volume is high. We perform the so‐called rigid lid limit on different shallow water models such as the abcd Bousssinesq systems or the Green–Naghdi equations. To do so, we consider an appropriate nondimensionalization of these models where two small parameters are involved: the shallowness parameter μ$\mu$ and a parameter ε$\epsilon$ which can be interpreted as a Froude number. When the parameter ε$\epsilon$ tends to zero, the surface deformation formally goes to the rest state, hence the name rigid lid limit. We carefully study this limit for different topologies. Aiming at the Terrestrial Water Storage(TWS) changes in the Amazon River basin, this article uses the coordinate time series data of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), adopts the Variational Mode Decomposition and Bidirectional Long and Short Term Memory(VMD-BiLSTM) method to extract the vertical crustal deformation series, and then adopts the Principal Component Analysis(PCA) method to invert the changes of terrestrial water storage in the Amazon Basin from July 15, 2012 to July 25, 2018. Then, the GNSS inversion results were compared with the equivalent water height retrieved from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) data. The results show that (1) the extraction method proposed in this article has better denoising effect than the traditional method; (2) the surface hydrological load deformation can be well calculated using GNSS coordinate vertical time series, and then the regional TWS changes can be inverted, which has a good consistency with the result of GRACE inversion of water storage, and has almost the same seasonal variation characteristics; (3) There is a strong correlation between TWS changes retrieved by GNSS based on surface deformation characteristics and water mass changes calculated by GRACE based on gravitational field changes, but GNSS satellite's all-weather measurement results in a finer time scale compared with GRACE inversion results. Highlights This work investigates the addition of milled carbon fiber reinforcement and its effect on scratch resistance and mechanical durability for basalt fiber/epoxy composites, assessed under varied loading conditions with the aid of different indenter types according to a factorial design. Composites with MCF content from 0 to 10 wt% were prepared. Scratch behaviors under Vickers and Rockwell indenters were studied for loads of 5, 10, and 15 N. The addition of 10 wt% MCF has resulted in scratch hardness increase from 13.255 N/mm2 up to 47.952 N/mm2, depending on the type of indenter used. Precisely, in conditions of a 5 N load and when a Rockwell‐type indenter was used, a scratch hardness maximum of 47.952 N/mm2 was achieved, while for a Vickers‐type indenter under the same conditions, the maximum value of its equivalent was 23.327 N/mm2. Profilometric and SEM analyses evidence that matrix cracks and surface deformation have been reduced with higher MCF content, at least for the application of lower scratch test loads. The mechanical and surface performances of the basalt fiber composites were found to be considerably improved by the reinforcement with MCF. Scratch resistance for milled carbon fibers increases and peaks at 10 wt% reinforcement. The Rockwell indenter indicates a steady increase in hardness up to 47,952 N/mm2. Peak hardness of 10 wt% is observed under the Vickers indenter for the 5 N load. Higher milled carbon fiber content reduces matrix cracking and surface deformation. ABSTRACT The limit equilibrium method has been widely used in the study of searching the slip surface of slopes. However, the method ignores the deformation characteristics of the rock mass and assumes that the shape of the slip surface is circular, which is quite different from the actual situation of the slope. For this reason, this paper proposes a fast search method for noncircular slip surface considering the deformation characteristics of the rock mass. The method is able to calculate the compression and shear deformation energies stored in the slip surface, as well as the virtual displacement generated by the slide mass when the slope is in a critical equilibrium state. The direction of motion of the slide mass is further calculated from the magnitude of the virtual displacement. In addition, this paper improves the generation of new solutions in the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm for the structural characteristics of the slip surface of the slope, thus achieving a fast search of the slip surface. Finally, the method of this paper is compared with the test question of ACADS and the simulation results of the finite difference method (FDM) to verify the effectiveness of the method of this paper. The surface‐wrinkled shrinkage structure of spheres is very common and also quite intriguing to explore and reveal the analogous droplet solidification kinetics in the space environment. Here, a liquid‐to‐solid phase transition experiment of floating refractory alloy droplets is designed to study the surface wrinkled shrinkage structures aboard China Space Station with a 10−5 gravity level. The experimental Ti‐Ni‐V alloy droplets undergo an extremely high overheating temperature beyond 1800 K and then achieve a supercooling of 307 K, displaying a strong thermodynamic metastability. The spherical surface deformation structures of this alloy under microgravity coupled with extreme metastable solidification are explored. Moreover, through the active control of metastable rapid solidification, a surface monophasic structure and a B2 structure capable of stress‐induced martensitic transformation are facilitated by wrinkled shrinkage dynamics under microgravity. Monitoring and modelling surface deformation are crucial components of understanding the freeze‒thaw process and preventing disasters in permafrost regions. However, previous methods had limitations that inhibited the interpretation of freeze‒thaw deformation, such as a lack of physical meaning, an inability to reflect the physical freeze–thaw process and consideration of only a single external factor’s impact on permafrost deformation. This study proposes an improved degree-day model (IDM) for quantitatively isolating surface deformation using interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) technology over permafrost. We considered the effect of soil moisture variation on permafrost deformation and incorporated interannual variation in the freeze‒thaw process due to climate change. By applying small baseline subset (SBAS) technology to Sentinel-1 InSAR measurements over the Wudaoliang permafrost region on the Qinghai‒Tibet Plateau from 2018 to 2019, we estimated long-term and seasonal permafrost deformation. The reliability of InSAR results was validated using in situ measurements, with root mean square errors (RMSEs) less than 10 mm. The results showed that the average linear deformation rates in 2018 and 2019 were −3.8 mm a−1 and −11.0 mm a−1, respectively, and the maximum seasonal deformations were 15.7 mm and 13.2 mm, respectively. Compared with the original degree-day model (ODM), the method used in this study produced smaller residual deformations of 6.9 mm and 6.4 mm, highlighting its ability to improve a quantitative description of permafrost deformation. In this paper, we explore the relative impact mantle inheritance can have on the evolution of magma-poor rift systems during the early stages of rift localization. To this end, we revisit the tectonic history of the Mesozoic Northeast Atlantic and its North Sea subdomain, analyzing these observations through comparison with results from recent analogue tectonic modeling work. Our analysis suggests that initial broadly distributed rift basin formation may be controlled by crustal inheritance, whereas the subsequent localization of deformation along deeper mantle inheritance may have caused the overprinting of previous rift basin trends in the Northeast Atlantic. This overprinting became possible as soon as the thinning of the ductile crust during progressive rifting allowed for sufficient coupling between the mantle and the upper crust. Importantly, we suggest that no changes in plate motion direction due to large-scale reorganization of the plate tectonic system are needed for differently oriented basin trends overprinting each other to develop. With these insights, we propose an updated scenario for rift kinematics in the North Sea involving continuous E-W plate divergence and provide a framework to rethink the evolution of other rift systems around the world during their early stages of rift localization. Measurement of the impact process is challenging due to its short duration and high frequency response. Due to the very small strain in low-velocity impacts, the requirements for the temporal and spatial resolution of test methods are extremely high. Traditionally, strain gauges or lasers are commonly used to measure the dynamic response of a single point, or quasi-static loading is used to achieve full-field response. To finely describe the transient full-field deformation process of low-velocity impacts, a high-speed imaging system combined with 3D digital image correlation (DIC) technique is set up to investigate the instantaneous responses of impact on a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plate at the ms and με level. The full-field deformation of the contact surface and the whole process of elastic wave propagation are measured. The measurement by DIC closely matches the measurement by strain gauges and agrees well with the numerical simulation results. The measurement reveals that the "multi-micro-impacts" phenomenon may happen during a complete impact process due to the complex strain wave propagation. This work provides a benchmark case for low-velocity impact full-field testing, and the results show that 3D DIC can accurately evaluate dynamic behaviors of low-velocity impact between flexible bodies and can accurately describe the spatiotemporal propagation characteristics of strain waves. In this paper, we construct two deformations of the Godeaux surface with π 1 ≅ Z 4 , such that each central fibre contains a family of conics. We show that surfaces that are birational to these Godeaux surfaces exist in two connected components of the moduli space of the Campedelli surfaces with a fundamental group of order 8. Landslides have become a common global concern because of their widespread nature and destructive power. The Gaizi Valley section of the Karakorum Highway is located in an alpine mountainous area with a high degree of geological structure development, steep terrain, and severe regional soil erosion, and landslide disasters occur frequently along this section, which severely affects the smooth flow of traffic through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). In this study, 118 views of Sentinel-1 ascending- and descending-orbit data of this highway section are collected, and two time-series interferometric synthetic aperture radar (TS-InSAR) methods, distributed scatter InSAR (DS-InSAR) and small baseline subset InSAR (SBAS-InSAR), are used to jointly determine the surface deformation in this section and identify unstable slopes from 2021 to 2023. Combining these data with data on sites of historical landslide hazards in this section from 1970 to 2020, we constructed 13 disaster-inducing factors affecting the occurrence of landslides as evaluation indices of susceptibility, carried out an evaluation of regional landslide susceptibility, and identified high-susceptibility unstable slopes (i.e., potential landslides). The results show that DS-InSAR and SBAS-InSAR have good agreement in terms of deformation distribution and deformation magnitude and that compared with single-orbit data, double-track SAR data can better identify unstable slopes in steep mountainous areas, providing a spatial advantage. The landslide susceptibility results show that the area under the curve (AUC) value of the artificial neural network (ANN) model (0.987) is larger than that of the logistic regression (LR) model (0.883) and that the ANN model has a higher classification accuracy than the LR model. A total of 116 unstable slopes were identified in the study, 14 of which were determined to be potential landslides after the landslide susceptibility results were combined with optical images and field surveys. These 14 potential landslides were mapped in detail, and the effects of regional natural disturbances (e.g., snowmelt) and anthropogenic disturbances (e.g., mining projects) on the identification of potential landslides using only SAR data were assessed. The results of this research can be directly applied to landslide hazard mitigation and prevention in the Gaizi Valley section of the Karakorum Highway. At present, gradient‐structure alloys with strong properties can be machined by strong surface plastic deformation. This kind of alloy also has high strength, excellent plastic toughness, and work hardening properties. Herein, nanometer polycrystalline nickel–cobalt alloys with grain gradient are studied. The change of mechanical properties and evolution mechanism of internal defects of graded polycrystalline nickel–cobalt alloys under shear loading are emphatically revealed, and the unusual strengthening mechanism brought about by gradient structure is revealed. The results show that grain gradient microstructure can improve the strength and maintain the toughness of the alloy to a certain extent. The uneven grain boundary distribution due to the gradient structure brings different hindering effects to the dislocation movement. Synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) is a powerful technique for quantifying the co- and postseismic deformation of large earthquakes at the Earth's surface. However, surface deformation caused by small- to moderate-sized earthquakes is rarely revealed by InSAR because their coseismic slip occurs mostly at significant depths (> 5 km), with limited deformation on the Earth's surface. In this work, we investigate the surface deformation associated with the Mw 5.4 May 28, 2016, Mihoub (Algeria) earthquake and its source parameters. Interferograms calculated from Sentinel-1 TOPSAR images of both ascending and descending orbits show that, despite its small size, the earthquake produced evident deformation on the Earth's surface, suggesting that the coseismic slip took place at a relatively shallow depth. We model the coseismic displacement fields extracted from InSAR time series using Bayesian approaches in two stages: 1) we model the coseismic slip data using uniform slip on a single fault to constrain the fault parameters. 2) We explore a variable slip model with varying rakes on the discretized fault obtained in the first stage. The modelling results indicate that the earthquake was associated with a ~ 0.5 m shallow oblique reverse slip, mostly between depths of 1.5 and 4.5 km, on a NE–SW-trending and SE-dipping thrust fault, which is in good agreement with the focal mechanism solutions of the earthquake deduced from seismology. This study demonstrates that the multitemporal InSAR (MTI) method may constrain surface displacements when the coseismic interferograms of moderate- to small-sized earthquakes are noisy and hence difficult to unwrap. The newly identified seismogenic Mihoub fault has implications for seismic hazard assessment in northern Algeria. Highlights: InSAR observations reveal surface deformation during a moderate earthquake (Mw 5.4) in the Tell Atlas of Algeria. The surface deformation of an earthquake is better revealed by a time series of noisy interferograms. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology is capable of detecting large areas of potentially unstable slopes. However, traditional time-series InSAR methods yield fewer valid measurement points (MPs) in alpine canyon regions. Distributed Scatterer (DS) Interferometry (DSI) technology serves as a potent tool for monitoring surface deformation in complex land cover areas; nonetheless, it grapples with high computational demands and low efficiency when interpreting deformation across extended time series. This study proposes an image compression–based DSI (ICDSI) method, which, building upon the DSI method, utilizes principal component analysis (PCA) to compress multi-temporal SAR images in the time dimension. It develops a module for compressing long-time sequence SAR images, acquires the compressed image (referred to as a virtual image), and integrates the developed image compression module into the DSI data processing flow to facilitate the inversion of long-time sequence InSAR land surface deformation information. To validate and assess the credibility of the ICDSI method, we processed a total of 78 ascending and 81 descending scenes of Sentinel-1A images spanning the period 2019–2021 using Small Baseline Subset (SBAS), DSI, and the ICDSI method proposed in this paper. Subsequently, these methods were applied to detect landscape displacements on both coasts of the Jinsha River Basin. The investigation reveals that the ICDSI method outperforms SBAS and DSI significantly in monitoring landslide displacements, enabling the detection of more measurement points (MPs) while utilizing less raw data. The accomplishments of this research program carry crucial theoretical implications and practical application value for the detection of surface deformation using long-time series InSAR. We performed an extensive analysis of C-band SAR datasets provided by the European Space Agency (ESA) satellites ERS-1/2, Envisat ASAR, and Sentinel-1 in the period 1992–2020 aiming at reconstructing the multi-decadal spatial and temporal evolution of the surface displacements at the Brienz/Brinzauls landslide complex, located in canton Graubünden (Switzerland). To this end, we analyzed about 1000 SAR images by applying differential interferometry (InSAR), multitemporal stacking, and persistent scatterer interferometry (PSI) approaches. Moreover, we jointly considered digital image correlation (DIC) on high-resolution multi-temporal digital terrain models (DTM) generated from airborne surveys and InSAR results to compute 3-D surface deformation fields. The extensive network of GNSS stations across the Brienz landslide complex allowed us to extensively validate the deformation results obtained in our remote sensing analyses. Here, we illustrate the limitations occurring when relying on InSAR and/or PSI measurements for the analysis and interpretation of complex landslide scenarios, especially in cases of relevant spatial and temporal heterogeneities of the deformation field. The joint use of InSAR and DIC can deliver a better picture of the evolution of the deformation field, however, not for all displacement components. Since InSAR, PSI and DIC measurements are nowadays routinely used in the framework of local investigations, as well as in regional, national, and/or continental monitoring programs, our results are of major importance for users aiming at a comprehensive understanding of these datasets in landslide scenarios. Advanced technologies such as light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have revolutionized the detection of subtle surface deformation and the generation of high-resolution digital elevation models, overcoming the challenges posed by low tectonic activity and climatic surface erosion on fault-generated landscapes. This study presents a new record of paleoearthquake surface rupture along a section of the central Gongju Fault, transecting the central part of the Korean Peninsula, by analyzing geomorphic, stratigraphic, and structural features. We identified a NE-SW-striking, prominent fault-generated landform derived from LiDAR analysis and surface ruptures showing a vertical offset of < 15 cm by trench excavation. We also constrained the depositional ages to ∼94 ka using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). Our comprehensive findings suggest that the seismic activity along the main trace of the Gongju Fault resulted in a distributed deformation within the fault zone, likely from multiple seismic events rather than a single occurrence. Structural features of the surface ruptures exposed on the trench wall show systematic changes in slip zone geometry, influenced by the pre-existing fault geometry, the imposed regional tectonic stress, and the physical properties of unconsolidated materials. This study enhances our understanding of seismic activity and fault dynamics in the central part of the Korean Peninsula, highlighting the significant influence of geological and climatic factors over tens of thousands of years in the intraplate regions with similar tectonic and climate settings. With the increasing demand for large and deep anchor projects in soft soil areas, issues related to settlement in circular foundation pits and damage to supporting structures have become significantly pronounced. The absence of pertinent design methods significantly impacts construction safety. Through on-site monitoring and statistical analysis, this study examines the spatiotemporal evolution of deformation in circular foundation pits, the deformation characteristics of retaining structures, and surface settlement features. Key design factors influencing the stability of circular foundation pits are explored. The research indicates that structural deformation and surface settlement are closely related over time and exhibit substantial spatial coordination. The deformation control capability of circular foundation pits is considerably stronger than that of square foundation pits, and it is less influenced by excavation depth. Diameter and soft soil thickness have a substantial impact on structural deformation and surface settlement. When the diameter is less than 40 m, the structural deformation remains below 0.1%. The study establishes an evaluation method for the deformation control of large and deep circular foundation pits in soft soil based on a significant amount of engineering monitoring data. Global climate change highlights the significance of renewable clean energy. Geothermal energy from oilfields is abundant and can be utilized for residential heating and oil transportation. However, unreasonable heat exchange methods lead to groundwater level decline. Differences and delays between water extraction and reinjection inevitably cause land subsidence, hindering the sustainable utilization of geothermal energy resources. It is crucial to effectively monitor large-scale ground surface deformation characteristics in geothermal fields. In the research, 55 Sentinel-1A images from October 2018 to May 2022 were collected, and the ground deformation of Caofeidian new district in Bohai Bay Basin, where Nanpu Oilfield is located, in North China, was inverted by short baseline subsets-interferometric synthetic aperture radar (SBAS-InSAR) technology. The maximum subsidence velocity in Caofeidian new district exceeded 50 mm/year. Since April 2019, there has been concentrated ground subsidence in the Caofeidian new district, with a maximum cumulative subsidence exceeding 50 mm. The maximum cumulative subsidence exceeded 150 mm by May 2022. Combined with pumping and recharging tests near heating project in Caofeidian new district, the temporal subsidence mechanisms were revealed. The water extraction from the thermal reservoir caused drainage consolidation of the strata, triggering rapid subsidence in November. In April, discrepancy between water extraction and reinjection flow rate in thermal reservoir caused drainage consolidation of the strata, further exacerbating the subsidence trend. During rainy seasons, despite water reinjection and groundwater replenishment from precipitation, the strata in the Caofeidian new district underwent irreversible plastic deformation, with a slow rebound process, lagging behind urban areas without geothermal development by one month. InSAR is a reliable technology for understanding the ground deformation process in geothermal fields. • Inhomogeneous elastic properties are identified using an explicit inverse method. • High accuracy in identification can be achieved using limited surface deformation. • The explicit inverse method can reduce the relative error from 40 % to 5 %. Identifying the spatial variation of stiffness properties in soft tissues nondestructively, with limited surface measurements, poses significant challenges. In this paper, we present a novel explicit inverse approach designed to characterize the nonhomogeneous elastic property distribution of soft tissues using only surface displacement datasets. In contrast to the prevalent implicit inverse approach, which focuses on optimizing the elastic properties of individual pixels, our proposed method optimizes the geometric parameters of deformable and movable components, as well as shear moduli of each component. As a result, the proposed approach requires far fewer optimization variables, streamlining the process. Numerical tests conducted in this study demonstrate the superiority of the explicit inverse method over the implicit inverse method, providing much-improved reconstructed results. In particular for a ring structure, while the average relative error of reconstruction using the implicit inverse method can exceed 40 %, the explicit inverse method achieves a remarkable average relative error of only 5 %. Given that surface displacements are easily measurable, the integration of our proposed explicit inverse method with low-cost imaging techniques shows great potential in accurately mapping the elastic property distribution of biological tissues. Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology is widely employed in the identification of geological hazards. However, in regions characterized by high mountains, canyons, and dense vegetation, decorrelation often hampers effective identification. In this study, focusing on the landslide-prone area of Wenxian County in Longnan City with abundant vegetation, we propose a Multi-Temporal InSAR (MTI) monitoring method that integrates Persistent Scatterers (PS) points with Slowly-Decorrelating Filtered Phase (SDFP) points in order to effectively reduce decorrelation effects. Additionally, we conduct high-precision monitoring of landslide surface deformation in Wenxian County using the the Generic Atmospheric Correction Online Service for InSAR (GACOS). Based on cross-validation of results obtained from three different techniques and the comparison with GNSS monitoring results, we validate the accuracy of these identification results. Furthermore, we use time-series deformation analysis methods to analyze the dynamic evolution of the characteristics of landslides in Chengguan Town and Koutouba Township, Wenxian County, Longnan City, and investigate their relationship with different environmental factors, such as rainfall and temperature. Our findings demonstrate that the spatial distribution consistency of the surface deformation information identified by the three techniques is high. However, StaMPS-MTI technology has the highest spatial sampling rate in deformation results, which is 21.02% higher than that of StaMPS-PS and over 4.6 times higher than that of StaMPS-SBAS. Additionally, the errors and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of StaMPS-MTI results in comparison to GNSS monitoring results are also the smallest, with values of 5.35 mm and 9.38 mm. We also observe varying degrees of deformation in Level 1 landslide areas identified by the STAMPS-MTI method in Chengguan Town and Koutouba Township with distinct seasonal characteristics. The cumulative deformation in the period from March to June shows a noticeable acceleration, with landslide incidents caused by the freeze-thaw phenomenon due to rising temperatures in March and April while rainfall caused landslide incidents from April to June. The landscape and landforms in permafrost regions are transforming due to climate change and permafrost thaw. This study uses optical and radar remote sensing, alongside spatial analysis, to examine thermokarst features and their driving factors in the source region of the Yangtze River (SRYR) on the central Tibetan Plateau. We analyse the distribution, interaction, and key environmental factors influencing thermokarst ponds and ground surface deformation, which are the two widespread and noticeable thermokarst features. Since the 1960s, the number of small water bodies has doubled from approximately ~2 × 104 to ~4 × 104 by the 2020s, with the median size of these water bodies decreasing from 2.3 × 104 m2 to 1.4 × 104 m2. The permafrost terrain has an average subsidence rate of 6.8 mm/a. About 50.9% of the SRYR exhibits evident thermokarst features. Surficial geological factors, especially geomorphology and slope, are primary factors in shaping the spatial distributions of thermokarst features. Both seasonal deformation and long‐term subsidence rates are more pronounced in areas with thermokarst ponds. However, once pond coverage exceeds around 5%, the amplifying effect on long‐term subsidence rates and seasonal deformation diminishes. The investigation further reveals that the relationship between seasonal deformation and long‐term subsidence is not strictly linear and that the combined increase in seasonal deformation and long‐term subsidence applies only to areas with seasonal deformation below approximately 20 mm. Differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) is a remote sensing technique for measuring surface displacements with precision down to millimeters, most commonly from satellites. In permafrost landscapes, InSAR measurements can provide valuable information on geomorphic processes and hazards, including thaw subsidence and frost heave, thermokarst, and permafrost creep. We first review recent progress in InSAR data availability, InSAR processing and uncertainty analysis methods relevant to permafrost studies. These technical advances have contributed to our understanding of surface deformation in flat and sloping terrain in polar and mountainous regions. We emphasize two emerging trends. First, InSAR increasingly enables insight into the mechanisms, controls, and drivers of permafrost landscape dynamics on subseasonal to decadal time scales. Second, InSAR observations in conjunction with models enable novel ways to infer subsurface parameters, such as near‐surface ground ice content and active layer thickness. We anticipate that in the coming decade, InSAR will mature into a widely used operational tool for monitoring, modeling, and planning across rapidly changing permafrost landscapes. With the continuous development of transportation construction in China, an increasing number of transportation projects must pass through large‐scale goafs formed by mining activities. Because of the complex structure of the overlying rock in the goaf area, large‐scale and lasting deformation occurs on the surface. Moreover, most goaf areas are in a water‐rich state, and the deformation characteristics of the rock mass are significantly affected by water, which poses a great challenge to the stability of the surface. Based on the Burgers model, a parameter selection method suitable for describing the creep characteristics of water‐rich rock mass compaction is proposed in this research, and the parameter calculation formula for the creep model of water‐rich rock mass under different pressures is given. Then, taking a highway in Jixi as an example, FLAC3D software is used to simulate the long‐term deformation characteristics of a water‐rich goaf, and the influence of long‐term deformation on the stability of the surface highway structure is analyzed. The results show that severe highway pavement deformation will occur after 50 years of operation in the study area. In particular, due to passing through the subsidence area of the goaf, the 0–150 m and 250–400 m sections of the highway are significantly greater than those of the other sections. The NE Tibet experienced complex and distinct basin developments and uplifts in different areas. However, the reasons for such distinct surface deformation and their relationship to deep crustal geodynamic processes are not well understood. Here, we obtain a crust model of NE Tibet by jointly inverting Rayleigh wave ellipticity and phase velocity. Our results reveal that deep crustal strength contrasts across NE Tibet play an important role in controlling basin development. Extrusion of the significantly weak Qilian crust is obstructed by rigid Alxa block, resulting in deep foreland basin with dramatic topographic step. In contrast, the relatively weak crust of Longzhong absorbs outward extrusion of NE Tibet within a wide transition zone, leading to small intermontane basins. Furthermore, the systematic thinning of basins from north to south around the western Ordos Block demonstrates the tectonic transformation from extension to compression due to expansion of NE Tibet since the late Miocene. Plain Language Summary: In this study, we obtain a high‐resolution model of NE Tibet by jointly inverting Rayleigh wave phase velocity and ellipticity (the radial‐to‐vertical amplitude ratio), which provides complementary constraints to the shallow structure. Our results show a clear correlation between velocity variations in the deep crust and basin structures at the surface. We infer that the extrusion of mechanically weak mid‐to‐lower crust of Qilian is obstructed by the strong Alxa block, leading to the steep topography and deep foreland Hexi Basin. To the east, in contrast, the outward extrusion of Songpan‐Ganzi is absorbed in a wide range by the relatively weak Longzhong region, developing gently sloping topography and small intermontane basins. Furthermore, the significant structural differences of rift basins from north to south around the western Ordos likely result from tectonic regime transformation induced by the continuous expansion of NE Tibet since the late Miocene. Our results improve the understanding of how deep crustal geodynamic processes influence surface uplift and basin developments in the expanding NE Tibet. AbstractThis study compares dip brazing and TIG welding operations carried out under optimal conditions on the parameters of strength, deformation, and ability to resist shocks for Al-64430 joints, which find extensive use in automobile and telecommunication industries. The fabricated samples were tested for bump test, surface deformation, microhardness and tensile strength, and the joint properties were studied through SEM, EDAX mapping and EDX. Compared to the dip-brazed samples, the TIG welded samples achieved 161% greater strength and 1000% greater elongation but subsequently 1330% higher surface deformation. Both joints were able to pass the bump test; however, some degree of cracks were observed post testing in both samples. Both samples achieved similar joint microhardness values, but notably, compared with the TIG welded sample, the brazed sample showed no HAZ zones in terms of microhardness variation, where a substantial decrease in microhardness was recorded. This absence of the HAZ region was also confirmed through the microstructure. Both primary and secondary silicon were observed in brazed samples, which had finer grain sizes than did the welded samples. Dendrite formation was observed for the brazed samples, whereas a uniform distribution of aluminium was observed for the welded samples. Fractographic analysis revealed brittle intergranular fracture with small dimples present at the fracture point for the brazed joints, while out-of-plane fracture with sharp edges indicated a more ductile nature for welded joints. AbstractHydrodynamic-induced landslide is a type of landslide whose stability can be reduced by rainfall, groundwater or reservoir water level fluctuations (RWLF). Based on the monitoring data of Wangjiashan landslide located in the reservoir area of Baihetan Hydropower Station, this article illustrates the deformation characteristics of Wangjiashan landslide on time and space distribution. Spearman correlation coefficients are used to make analysis of the relationship between surface deformation and different dynamic factors such as RWLF, seismic activity, and rainfall. The results indicate that RWLF is a dominant dynamic factor of Wangjiashan landslide. Besides, two variables of deformation factors are presented to find differences during various deformation periods. The results show that the displacement and its rate are both strongly correlated with the RWLF, especially during the acceleration period and the deceleration stage. It is indicated that Wangjiashan landslide is a typical hydrodynamically induced landslide. This study provides a useful reference for understanding the instability mechanism of the landslide. Under Priabonian (latest Eocene) far-field compression, the major Jurassic graben systems and their proximal areas experienced domal uplift in the Netherlands and northeastern Belgium. It has been proposed that this flexural uplift was simultaneous with flexural subsidence of the surrounding areas. This hypothesis is, however, only based on the correlation of few widely spaced boreholes without supporting biostratigraphic or seismic data. For this study, a seismic line and cross-boundary borehole log correlation panel, comprising three biostratigraphically analyzed boreholes, were used to critically examine the abovementioned hypothesis. The seismic line and correlation panel run from the southern flank of the uplifted West Netherlands Basin, also known as the Voorne Trough, towards the south. They both show a gradual thickening of the Priabonian sequences towards the Voorne Trough, confirming the flexural subsidence hypothesis. The underlying Bartonian and overlying lowermost Rupelian units do not share the abovementioned thickness trend, which highlights the particularity of Priabonian basin dynamics. Within the Priabonian depocenter, plenty of reworked organic material was deposited, mostly of Bartonian age, providing further evidence of the simultaneity of subsidence and uplift in nearby regions. We consider it very likely that subsidence and uplift were part of the same vertical surface deformation process. The results of this study are consistent with the mechanism of lithospheric folding under far-field compression by the convergence between Africa and Europe. A Priabonian N-S compressional stress-field would also be consistent with fault, joint and vein analyses performed at the British Isles west of the study area. SBAS-InSAR technology is effective in obtaining surface deformation information and is widely used in monitoring landslides and mining subsidence. However, SBAS-InSAR technology is susceptible to various errors, including atmospheric, orbital, and phase unwrapping errors. These multiple errors pose significant challenges to precise deformation monitoring over large areas. This paper examines the spatial characteristics of these errors and introduces a spatially constrained SBAS-InSAR method, termed SSBAS-InSAR, which enhances the accuracy of wide-area surface deformation monitoring. The method employs multiple stable ground points to create a control network that limits the propagation of multiple types of errors in the interferometric unwrapped data, thereby reducing the impact of long-wavelength signals on local deformation measurements. The proposed method was applied to Sentinel-1 data from parts of Jining, China. The results indicate that, compared to the traditional SBAS-InSAR method, the SSBAS-InSAR method significantly reduced phase closure errors, deformation rate standard deviations, and phase residues, improved temporal coherence, and provided a clearer representation of deformation in time-series curves. Steep surrounding rock significantly challenges tunnel stability by affecting the stress distribution and deformation behavior. The angle of dip in surrounding rock greatly influences these factors, heightening the risk of instability along bedding planes, particularly under high ground stress conditions. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of steep rock strata mechanical properties based on a railway tunnel in Yunnan Province, China. It incorporates long-term field monitoring and various laboratory tests, including point load, triaxial, and loose circle tests. Using experimental data, this study simulated the failure processes of steep surrounding rock and tunnel structures with a custom finite element method (FEM) integrated with the volume of fluid (VOF) approach. The analysis summarized the deformation patterns, investigated the causes of inverted arch deformation and failure, and proposed countermeasures. The findings reveal that increasing the rock dip angle results in greater deformation and accelerated failure rates, with the surrounding rock's loose zone stabilizing at approximately 8 m once deformation stabilizes. At a surface deformation of 8 cm, the failure zone extends to 6 m; however, this extension occurs more rapidly with higher lateral pressure coefficients. Additionally, failure zones develop more quickly in thin, soft rock on steep slopes compared to uniform rock formations. The rise of the tunnel floor is attributed to the steeply inclined, thin surrounding rock. In this study, a numerical model for unilateral quasi-static contact between a rigid sphere and an elastic coating has been developed. The contact problem was solved using a numerical procedure based on the FFT technique, considering various coatings with different thicknesses and mechanical properties, implemented through a Matlab code. The model calculates the contact surface deformation and pressure field through a double iteration process. The first iteration solves the contact problem for a given indenter penetration, while the second iteration refines this penetration by minimizing the difference between the fixed and calculated loads. To achieve this, influence coefficients are derived from the elasto-static equations using the Papkovich-Neuber potentials. The study discusses the influence of coating thickness and friction coefficient value on the tribological behavior of the coating. The results indicate that contact pressure increases (ranging from 1.9 to 2.5) as the coating becomes thicker or more rigid (0.02 mm to 0.2 mm). Additionally, the tribological behavior of the coated surface is affected by the coating's thickness, hardness, and friction coefficient value. Green mining is the basic background of high-quality mining, and source reduction is the most important part, among which the optimization of working face height and length is the most active. How to control the working face parameters, reasonably evaluate the surface subsidence characteristics of the super-long working face, and identify the limit working face length and the surface discontinuous deformation threshold is particularly important. In order to solve the problem of irreversible damage to the surface caused by the mining process of the working face, this paper discusses the whole process of surface movement in the 8.8 m super-large mining height working face of Shangwan Coal Mine through field investigation, the maximum subsidence is 6.20 m, with a subsidence coefficient of 0.72. Combined with the inflection point trajectory, advancing degree and subsidence coefficient, the 0.9 coefficient of the working face subsidence basin boundary and the loss reduction strategy far from the limit working face threshold are proposed. The results show that the subsidence basin of 12,401 working face accounts for 34%, the continuous deformation area of surface accounts for 64%, and the influence area of discontinuous deformation area is within 10 times of mining height. With the help of borehole detection verification, the caving zone height within the coal seam overburden to be between 33.2 and 33.25 m and the fracture zone height between 118.08 and 132.83 m. Therefore, the caving ratio is about 3.8, and the fracture ratio is about 13–15, which provides a strong basis for the optimization design of working face and the timing of surface ecological management. We report on an experimental study in which Lagrangian tracking is applied to millions of microscopic particles floating on the free surface of turbulent water. We leverage a large jet-stirred zero-mean-flow apparatus, where the Reynolds number is sufficiently high for an inertial range to emerge while the surface deformation remains minimal. Two-point statistics reveal specific features of the flow, deviating from the classic description derived for incompressible turbulence. The magnitude of the relative velocity is strongly intermittent, especially at small separations, leading to anomalous scaling of the second-order structure functions in the dissipative range. This is driven by the divergent component of the flow, leading to fast approaching/separation rates of nearby particles. The Lagrangian relative velocity shows strong persistence of the initial state, such that the ballistic pair separation extends to the inertial range of time delays. Based on these observations, we propose a classification of particle pairs based on their initial separation rate. When this is much smaller than the relative velocity prescribed by inertial scaling (which is the case for the majority of the observed particle pairs), the relative velocity transitions to a diffusive growth and the Richardson–Obukhov super-diffusive dispersion is recovered. The examination of mechanical and wettability properties of commercial pure titanium (CP-Ti) introduced a novel challenge. The microstructure of samples was analyzed by using OM and SEM micro-images. In this study, the hardness of the surface and cross section of samples was evaluated, and the effect of several surface mechanical attrition treatments (SMATed) on samples was examined. Also, the tensile test was done to compare the effect of SMAT duration on mechanical properties of samples. The contact angle method was then employed to investigate the impact of SAMT duration on the wettability trend. According to results, as the treatment time increases, twins become evident in the deeper layers of the samples. In contrast, the near-surface twins are shorter than those found in the deeper material, signifying the presence of finer grains. Moreover, the elevated hardness in SMATed samples can be attributed to several key factors, including cold work, a rise in defects and twins, and grain refinement. The surface hardness increases across the sample series (up to Ti6) due to the substantial energy input. Nevertheless, it is anticipated that further continuation of the process will result in a constant surface hardness. The increased strength observed in SMATed samples can be attributed to factors such as reduction in grain size and the formation of twins. The wettability results show that the treated surfaces exhibited a significant change in wettability compared to the untreated samples, with a 25% reduction in the contact angle. This is attributed to the surface modifications induced by the treatment process, which introduced more hydrophilic functional groups. We present experimental results of a study on oxygen transfer rates in a water channel facility with varying turbulence inflow conditions set by an active grid. We compare the change in gas transfer rate with different turbulence characteristics of the flow set by four different water channel and grid configurations. It was found that the change in gas transfer rate correlates best with the turbulence intensity in the vertical direction. The most turbulent cases increased the gas transfer rate by 30% compared to the low turbulence reference case. Between the two most turbulent cases studied here, the streamwise turbulence and largest length scales in the flow change, while the gas transfer rate is relatively unchanged. In contrast, for the two less turbulent cases where the magnitude of the fluctuations normal to the free surface are also smaller, the gas transfer rate is significantly reduced. Since the air–water interface plays an important role in the gas transfer process, special attention is given to the free-surface deformations. Despite taking measures to minimise it, the active grid also leaves a direct imprint on the free surface, and the majority of the waves on the surface originate from the grid itself. Surface deformations were, however, ruled out as a main driver for the increase in gas transfer because the increase in surface area is < 0.25%, which is two orders of magnitude smaller than the measured change in the gas transfer rate. The paper proposes the model describing the initial stage of skin electrical explosion of cylindrical conductors. The model considers the magnetic field diffusion, skin effect, Joule heating, conducting material dynamics under the action of the Ampere force and thermoelastic stresses, material transition to the plastic state and plastic flow, phase transition from solid to liquid at the melting point, and transition from liquid to vapor (vaporization). The analysis is given to the nature of thermoelastic stresses and elastoplastic deformations of the material in states preceding its melting. Discussed is the probability of the material fracture and/or deformation of its surface. The dynamics of the outer boundary is calculated for both solid and liquid states of the material. The analysis is presented for the decrement of the perturbation growth on the molten surface, and ways of improving the stability of the external surface of exploding conductors are discussed. Comprehensive mechanical testing of steels provides important information about the possibilities of their use under different processing and operating conditions. Comparison of test methods with each other, taking into account the development of plastic deformation and fracture analysis, is an urgent task for materials certification. The present work is devoted to the study of the characteristics of the response to deformation of high-manganese steels (13 and 22 wt.% Mn steels) in comparison with the behavior of high-entropy Cantor alloy during scratching, tensile, and microhardness tests. The plasticity of the materials and the nature of their destruction were assessed by the surface deformation relief and fractography. Analysis of the structure during scratch testing made it possible to assess the degree of plasticity of the materials and relate it to the results of tensile tests and the nature of destruction. The steel with 13 wt.% Mn (Hadfield steel) the destruction of which occurs by the quasi-viscous mechanism has the lowest ductility. The highest ductility has the Cantor alloy characterized by the viscous fracture mechanism. The Hadfield steel has the highest hardness of all materials studied, while the Cantor alloy has the least hardness. The research results lay the basis for the possibility of recalculating the mechanical characteristics from different tests, taking into account the implemented stress state scheme and processes of structural changes during deformation. Observing in‐conduit physical mechanism underlying the switching of eruptive activity between the craters of multi‐vent volcanoes could contribute to hazard assessment at these complex volcanic edifices. We performed monitoring of mass density changes beneath two active craters of Sakurajima volcano in Kyushu, Japan between September 2018 and July 2023 with cosmic‐ray muography. From December 2022, the mass density decreased beneath Minamidake crater and increased beneath Showa crater in accordance with a switch of eruptive activity from Minamidake crater to Showa crater. Plug formation and convective magma degassing processes have been observed with muography in accordance with the deformation of the surface of volcanic edifice measured by Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar. We found a moderate inverse correlation with a Pearson's coefficient of −0.52 between the mass densities observed beneath the two active craters throughout the entire period. The inverse correlation of mass densities indicates a magmatic gas flux dynamics which characterizes a branched conduit structure. Muography thus reveals the shallow magmatic processes during switching of eruptive activity between the craters of multi‐vent volcanoes and allows to infer to the conduit structure. Models of active deformation of the Earth's crust are predominantly represented with dislocations having a downdip continuation into the lower crust, where the fault slips continuously. This model predicts surface strain accumulation concentrated near the fault during the interseismic period. In an alternative model, faults do not extend beneath the elastic portion of the crust and are accompanied by a wide zone of distributed shear underneath, predicting a more constant strain rate lacking concentrations at the faults. We use high‐precision GPS data collected across the northern and central Walker Lane, USA— a region of complex faulting near the western edge of the Basin and Range Province to evaluate which model is appropriate. Despite the existence of dense continuous and semi‐continuous geodetic networks that have been surveyed for ∼20 years, the horizontal velocities reveal no evidence of localized strain accumulation across the fault surface expressions. Instead, deformation within the Walker Lane is uniformly linear, suggesting that the surface deformation reflects distributed shear within the ductile crust rather than focused deformation at faults. This suggests no downdip extension of the faults below the seismogenic layer. The shear zone is 172 ± 6 km wide in the northernmost Walker Lane narrowing to 116 ± 4 km in the central Walker Lane. The total velocity budget across the shear zone is 7.2 ± 0.1 mm/yr in the north, increasing to 10.1 ± 0.1 mm/yr in the central Walker Lane. We conclude that assuming the presence of lower crustal dislocations when estimating geodetic faults slip rates may be inappropriate. Plain Language Summary: Interpreting Earth's surface deformation, measured by high‐precision GPS stations, is crucial for understanding plate tectonics and assessing seismic hazard. Traditionally, the assumption has been that faults in the Earth's upper crust extend as discrete dislocations into the lower crust. In this paper, we show that there is no compelling evidence of this in the Northern Walker Lane region of California and Nevada. Instead, the geodetically measured deformation on the surface reflects uniform shearing in the lower crust. Our findings suggest that estimating slip rates on the faults with methods that assume deep dislocations may be inappropriate. Instead, the slip rate of a fault is likely to be controlled by the fault's position and orientation within the shear zone. Hollow sinking experiments and tensile tests were conducted to clarify the evolution of surface roughness during hollow sinking. Stainless steel tubes (outer diameter: 1.5 mm; wall thickness: 0.045 mm) featuring a single grain spanning the wall thickness achieved via annealing as the starting material. The tube was drawn without an internal tool using a draw bench by controlling the tube drawing speed ratio of the die entrance and exit sides. The surface roughnesses of the inner and outer surfaces at the die entrance and exit sides of the drawn tube were compared with the surface roughnesses of the inner and outer surfaces under the uniaxial tensile deformation of the starting material. As a result, two major findings were revealed; the surface roughness formation behavior during the hollow sinking; the uniaxial tensile deformation exhibits a tube on both sides of the entrance and the exit of a die. Former uniaxial tensile deformation forms surface roughness of the tube at the die-entrance-side. However, hollow sinking reduces the roughness. The tube keeps its small roughness even though it is applied the later uniaxial tensile deformation behind the die exit. Furthermore, the conventional formula to predict the surface roughness of a metal sheet caused by the uniaxial tensile deformation can predict the surface roughness of a tube in the hollow sinking. At both die entrance and exit sides, the roughness of the inner surface was larger than that of the outer surface at the die entrance and exit side. The outer surface of the tube contacts the inside of a die when the tube passes through the die. The height of the convex parts decreased at that moment. Hollow sinking suppressed the increase in surface roughness of the inner surface as the outer surface was smoothed in the die. Land subsidence caused by human engineering activities is a serious problem worldwide. We selected Qian'an County as the study area to explore the evolution of land subsidence and predict its deformation trend. This study utilized synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) technology to process 64 Sentinel-1 data covering the area, and high-precision and high-resolution surface deformation data from January 2017 to December 2021 were obtained to analyze the deformation characteristics and evolution of land subsidence. Then, land subsidence was predicted using the intelligence neural network theory, machine learning methods, time-series prediction models, dynamic data processing techniques, and engineering geology of ground subsidence. This study developed three time-series prediction models: a support vector regression (SVR), a Holt Exponential Smoothing (Holt) model, and multi-layer perceptron (MLP) models. A time-series prediction analysis was conducted using the surface deformation data of the subsidence funnel area of Zhouzi Village, Qian'an County. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of the three models were compared and analyzed. The results show that the three developed time-series data prediction models can effectively capture the time-series-related characteristics of surface deformation in the study area. The SVR and Holt models are suitable for analyzing fewer external interference factors and shorter periods, while the MLP model has high accuracy and universality, making it suitable for predicting both short-term and long-term surface deformation. This paper presents an improved analytical formulation for analyzing the sliding friction torque in cylindrical roller bearings (CRBs), which are renowned for their outstanding radial load-carrying capacity. Although sliding friction in CRBs typically employs a minor heat source during rotation, its association with the roller-bearing starting torque is vital. In particular, their impact is substantial at higher rotational speeds when the centrifugal forces come into play. The intricacy lies in the manifestation of sliding friction torque between the rollers and races, stemming from non-uniform surface deformation. Two key aspects of the CRB sliding friction torque are considered in this study, the differential sliding friction torques caused by roller rotation and roller orbital motion. Additionally, a computational method for evaluating sliding friction based on pure rolling lines (PRLs) in the race contact area is introduced. This method incorporates an innovative updating algorithm that provides more precise insights into PRLs and sliding friction torque. The effectiveness of the proposed approach was then established through a comparative analysis of the empirical formulas provided by bearing manufacturers.
