Purpose: To compare the bond durability of adhesives with 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) to low-viscosity bulk-fill composite. Materials and Methods: Four 10-MDP-containing adhesives (Tokuyama Bond Force II [TBF II], Tokuyama; Scotchbond Universal [SU], 3M Oral Care; Clearfil Universal Bond Quick [CL], Kuraray Noritake; and G-Premio Bond [GP], GC) and one 10-MDP-free adhesive (Heliobond [HB] Ivoclar Vivadent) as a control were applied to polished, air-abraded surfaces of randomly assigned SureFil SDR flow low-viscosity bulk-fill composite blocks. The application of the adhesives was followed by applying Tetric EvoCeram universal nanohybrid composite in layers. Each layered composite block was sliced into stick specimens with a hard-tissue microtome. Half of the groups were randomly selected and tested for microtensile bond strength (immediate group); the other groups were aged in a thermocyling machine for 5000 cycles, followed by testing microtensile bond strength (aged group). The adhesive interface was evaluated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Failure modes were observed using light microscopy. The results were evaluated with Levene's test, ANOVA, Welch's ANOVA, Tukey's test and the Z-test as appropriate (significance: p < 0.05). Results: There was a significant difference in the bond strength between 10-MDP-containing adhesives and the 10-MDP-free adhesive in all groups. Aging significantly decreased the bond strength in all adhesive groups. There was no significant difference in the bond strength durability among the 10-MDP-containing adhesives. Conclusion: Application of 10-MDP-containing adhesives has an advantageous effect on the air-abraded SDR composite surface compared with 10-MDP-free adhesive. The composition of 10-MDP-containing adhesives did not influence the bond strength. Aging diminishes the bond strength durability of 10-MDP-containing adhesives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Auger-emitting radionuclides, exemplified by Pd-103, exhibit considerable therapeutic potential in cancer treatment due to their high cytotoxicity and localized biological impact. Despite these advantages, the separation of such radionuclides presents a complicated challenge, requiring intricate and time-intensive "wet chemistry" methods attributed to the exceptional chemical inertness of the associated metals. This study proposes an innovative solution to this separation challenge through the design and implementation of a piece of radionuclide separation equipment (RSE). The equipment employs a dry distillation approach, capitalizing on differences in partial vapor pressures between irradiated and resulting radioactive metals, with a diffusion-driven extraction method applied to separate Pd-103 radionuclides generated via the proton irradiation of Rh-103 at cyclotron. Our optimization endeavors focused on determining the optimal temperature for effective metal separation and adjusting the diffusion, evaporation, and deposition rates, as well as addressing chemical impurities. The calculations indicate 17% ± 2% separation efficiency with our RSE. Approximately 77 ± 2% and 49 ± 2% of the deposited Pd-103 were isolated on substrates of Nb foil and ZnO-covered W disc, respectively. The proposed innovative dry distillation method that has been experimentally tested offers a promising alternative to conventional separation techniques, enabling enhanced purity and cost-efficient cancer treatment strategies. The surface roughness, surface free energy (SFE) of composites, and composite wettability by dental adhesives are determining factors in achieving a strong and durable adhesion (e.g., composite repair, luting adhesively bonded indirect restorations). In this study, the SFE of one nanohydrid and two bulk-fill composites was investigated in relation to the wetting ability of five different dental adhesives. The profilometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurement justified that the sandblasting produced a significantly rough surface in which the different filler amounts, filler distribution, and resin-filler ratio participated. The SFE of the tested composite was between 45.65 and 49.07 mJ/m2 regardless of surface treatment. Despite the similarity in SFE, the adhesives wet the surface of the composites in different ways that were between 16.01° and 35.10°. The contact angle of solvent-free dental adhesive was lower due to sandblasting supporting the micromechanical retention. Based on our results, it was found that sandblasting, the most frequently recommended surface treatment, does not change the surface energy but causes a change in the contact angle, which can be explained by the different surface tension of the dental adhesives. Ternary copper halide pseudo‐perovskites are in the forefront of research as potential active materials in light emission applications. The optoelectronic properties of these compounds can be fine‐tuned by the preparation of mixed‐halide compositions. After irradiation, self‐trapped excitonic states are formed in these materials. However, the emission from these self‐trapped states is not yet fully understood. In this work, mixed‐halide Cs3Cu2X5 films (where X: I and/or Br) are prepared by a simple spray‐coating method. Using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, the changes in optoelectronic properties are linked to the electronic structure of these materials. It is revealed that the incorporation of bromide into the lattice makes the emission process of these materials more vulnerable to trap states. By combining the different spectroscopic characterization techniques, the exact band structure of these compounds is determined, and the different processes are translated to the absolute energy scale. As an alternative excitation mechanism of self‐trapped states, α‐particles are used to induce radioluminescence response. The Cs3Cu2X5 films exhibit composite decay patterns, most likely attributed to a multitude of different trap state‐mediated recombination processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Excavation campaigns conducted at the Pécel‐Kis hársas site (Hungary) between 2014 and 2017 yielded the remains of a mature female woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis) and six lithic artefacts. Radiocarbon dating confirmed that the rhinoceros died ca. 20.4k cal a bp, at the very end of the Last Glacial Maximum and, considering the position of the artefacts when found, it was probably killed by Epigravettian hunters. Based on dental analyses of the specimen, a vigorous lichen‐ (and possibly moss‐)consuming diet could be inferred for the end of the animal's lifetime. Based on Sr results, we can exclude the possibility of long‐range migration. In accordance with the optimum environmental demands of the foraging lichen, the low δ18O value of osseous material implies a relatively cold contemporaneous climate with a calculated mean annual air temperature of around 0.7 °C. Meanwhile, the extremely low δ15N value may have resulted from the proximity of the discontinuous permafrost zone and some intensive soil dislocation. Consequently, poor vegetation and an open, tundra‐like habitat can be assumed to have been dominant at the site at that time, which is also supported by palaeoenvironmental modeling experiments. Analysis of phytoliths (plant silica bodies) still may have an unrevealed potential in paleoenvironmental reconstruction studies. This can provide novel findings in research on environmental change as phytoliths play an important role in the silicon biogeochemical cycle. In favorable environmental conditions, Picea abies [L.] H. Karst (Norway spruce) needles develop a phytolith layer consisting of more or less cubical or cuboid (blocky) phytoliths in their transfusion tissue that becomes continuous toward the apex of the needle. This can be studied in situ in fossil (subfossil) needles under a stereomicroscope. This study reports the blocky-type phytolith preservation in fossil spruce needles in sediment sections of the lake Černé jezero (Bohemian Forest, Czech Republic). The oldest needle containing phytoliths was 7.8 cal ka BP. Despite differences in the Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectra of different age phytoliths, the studied subfossil phytoliths did not lose their globular ultrastructure in the needle tissue, proving the stability of this phytolith morphotype. As the tissue of the needle fossils can preserve phytoliths in situ, further micro-analytical measurements will make these needles promising tools for paleoenvironmental reconstructions. The most favorable period for spruce phytolith formation for the studied region appears to be the period 6.0–4.5 cal ka BP, within the Holocene Climate Optimum period. Herein, the first study on the scintillation properties of CsCu2X3 and Cs3Cu2X5 (where X: Cl−, Br−, I−) is presented, describing their charged particle‐induced luminescence involving electrons, protons, α‐particles, and heavy ions, as well as revealing their capabilities on the timing and spectroscopic evaluation of single‐particle events. The thin layers are prepared with a simple and cost‐effective deposition procedure, without the incorporation of external dopants, exploiting the intrinsic radiative recombination observed in low‐dimensional perovskites. The combined effect of the high binding energy and localized stability of self‐trapped excitons, large Stokes shift, defect tolerance, and the high excitation density along the particle track leads to the emergence of boosted scintillation pulses. The observations demonstrate the first use of inorganic thin‐film scintillators with optical pulse characteristics and light yield competitive with doped single crystal scintillators, while also providing improved structural and functional stability under extreme environmental conditions. Lead oxide (PbO) photoconductors are proposed as X-ray-to-charge transducers for the next generation of direct conversion digital X-ray detectors. Optimized PbO-based detectors have potential for utilization in high-energy and dynamic applications of medical X-ray imaging. Two polymorphs of PbO have been considered so far for imaging applications: polycrystalline lead oxide (poly-PbO) and amorphous lead oxide (a-PbO). Here, we provide the comparative analysis of two PbO-based single-pixel X-ray detector prototypes: one prototype employs only a layer of a-PbO as the photoconductor while the other has a combination of a-PbO and poly-PbO, forming a photoconductive bilayer structure of the same overall thickness as in the first prototype. We characterize the performance of these prototypes in terms of electron–hole creation energy (W±) and signal lag—major properties that define a material's suitability for low-dose real-time imaging. The results demonstrate that both X-ray photoconductive structures have an adequate temporal response suitable for real-time X-ray imaging, combined with high intrinsic sensitivity. These results are discussed in the context of structural and morphological properties of PbO to better understand the preparation–fabrication–property relationships of this material. The in situ application of the combination of different types of drugs revolutionized the area of periodontal therapy. The purpose of this study was to develop nanocomposite hydrogel (NCHG) as a pH-sensitive drug delivery system. To achieve local applicability of the NCHG in dental practice, routinely used blue-light photopolymerization was chosen for preparation. The setting time was 60 s, which resulted in stable hydrogel structures. Universal Britton–Robinson buffer solutions were used to investigate the effect of pH in the range 4–12 on the release of drugs that can be used in the periodontal pocket. Metronidazole was released from the NCHGs within 12 h, but chlorhexidine showed a much longer elution time with strong pH dependence, which lasted more than 7 days as it was corroborated by the bactericidal effect. The biocompatibility of the NCHGs was proven by Alamar-blue test and the effectiveness of drug release in the acidic medium was also demonstrated. This fast photo-polymerizable NCHG can help to establish a locally applicable combined drug delivery system which can be loaded with the required amount of medicines and can reduce the side effects of the systemic use of drugs that have to be used in high doses to reach an ideal concentration locally. Nowadays, to improve quality of life, to have a more comfortable life, in internal spaces we try to maintain conditions that are free from external environmental influences. Thus, existing as well as newly built houses have adequate interiors maintaining their temperature, warming, or cooling due to the environment compensation. One way to create this is to reduce the heat loss in buildings. An option to achieve this is the application of thermal insulations. Nowadays, the use of super insulation materials such as aerogel and vacuum insulation panels and other nano-structured insulations, such as graphite doped expanded polystyrene, is becoming increasingly justified. These are relatively new materials, and we know only a little about them. This paper presents research results based on temperature-induced investigations of nanostructured graphite expanded polystyrene, to reveal its thermal stability after long-term and short-term thermal annealing, simulating the ageing of the material. Firstly, with a differential scanning calorimeter, we will explore the thermal stability profile of the specimens. After this, the paper will present temperature-induced changes in both the thermal properties and the structure of the samples. We will also present changes in the thermal conductivity, modifications in the surface, and compressive property variation induced by thermal annealing. The samples were thermal annealed at 70 °C for 6 weeks, at 100 and 110 °C for 1 h. Besides the thermal conductivity measurements with Netzsch 446 heat flow meter equipment, we will present specific heat capacity measurement results executed with the same equipment. Moreover, sorption isotherms of the as-received and annealed samples were registered and completed with hydrophobic experiments, too. Furthermore, from the measurements, we showed that temperature should affect a significant change in the thermal conductivity of materials. Moreover, the changes in the graphite expanded polystyrene before and after thermal annealing were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy, as well as optical microscopy. β-Tricalcium phosphate was combined with silica aerogel in composites prepared using the sol–gel technique and supercritical drying. The materials were used in this study to check their biological activity and bone regeneration potential with MG63 cell experiments. The composites were sintered in 100 °C steps in the range of 500–1000 °C. Their mechanical properties, porosities, and solubility were determined as a function of sintering temperature. Dissolution studies revealed that the released Ca-/P molar ratios appeared to be in the optimal range to support bone tissue induction. Cell viability, ALP activity, and type I collagen gene expression results all suggested that the sintering of the compound at approximately 700–800 °C as a scaffold could be more powerful in vivo to facilitate bone formation within a bone defect, compared to that documented previously by our research team. We did not observe any detrimental effect on cell viability. Both the alkaline phosphatase enzyme activity and the type I collagen gene expression were significantly higher compared with the control and the other aerogels heat-treated at different temperatures. The mesoporous silica-based aerogel composites containing β-tricalcium phosphate particles treated at temperatures lower than 1000 °C produced a positive effect on the osteoblastic activity of MG63 cells. An in vivo 6 month-long follow-up study of the mechanically strongest 1000 °C sample in rat calvaria experiments provided proof of a complete remodeling of the bone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Featured Application: This paper contains laboratory measurements of four different micro-fiber thermal insulation materials to reveal their applicability limits under various environmental conditions. On the samples, scanning electron microscope investigations were executed to disclose the structure of the fibers. The study also investigated the most important thermal parameters of the samples, namely, the thermal conductivity and the calorific value with the specific heat capacity. Humidity measurements and hydrophobic tests were also conducted and the sorption isotherm of the samples was registered. To reveal the thermal stability as well as the applicability limits, differential scanning calorimetry and Raman spectroscopy measurements have also been performed. As a result of these comprehensive measurements, one can predict the behavior of the samples in various external circumstances. The results can generate further studies and are very useful for both designers, planners, and researchers. In the European Union, almost 40% of all energy consumption comes from buildings, while another 20–25% comes from transport. In the European Union, including Hungary, only buildings with almost-zero energy demand could be built after 2020, and the use of renewable energies must be strengthened. The Renewable Directive stipulated that by 2020, the share of renewable energy in buildings must be 25%, and in transport it must be 10%; the use of electric vehicles is vital. There are about four million dwellings in Hungary, of which approximately three million need to be renovated, and only some of these (a few hundred) meet the cost-optimized level of the 2020 directive. The use of insulation materials is very important in the transport sector, too. Insulation materials are also used by aircraft and electric vehicles. To reduce the energy loss from buildings, different insulation materials can be used; investigations of insulation materials are very important. This paper presents a comprehensive research report on insulation materials which could be used for building elements, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning appliances) equipment, and vehicles. In this paper, laboratory investigations will be presented along with calculations to better understand the properties and behavior of these materials. For this, firstly structural analysis with scanning electron microscope will be presented. Moreover, the paper will present thermal conductivity and combustion heat measurement results. The sorption and hydrophobic behavior of the materials will be also revealed. Finally, the article will also display differential scanning calorimetry measurements and Raman spectroscopy results of the samples. Though the antibacterial effect is advantageous, silver and silver nanoparticles can negatively affect the viability of human tissues. This study aims to check the viability of cells on surfaces with different particle size and to find the biologically optimal configuration. We investigated the effect of modified thickness of vaporized silver and applied heat and time on the physical characteristics of silver nanoparticle covered titanium surfaces. Samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, and drop shape analyzer. To investigate how different physical surface characteristics influence cell viability, Alamar Blue assay for dental pulp stem cells was carried out. We found that different surface characteristics can be achieved by modifying procedures when creating silver nanoparticle covered titanium. The size of the nanoparticles varied between 60 to 368 nm, and hydrophilicity varied between 63 and 105 degrees of contact angle. Investigations also demonstrated that different physical characteristics are related to a different level of viability. Surfaces covered with 60 nm particle sizes proved to be the most hydrophilic, and the viability of the cells was comparable to the viability measured on the untreated control surface. Physical and biological characteristics of silver nanoparticle covered titanium, including cell viability, have an acceptable level to be used for antibacterial effects to prevent periimplantitis around implants. In this study, scaffolds were prepared via an electrospinning method for application in oral cavities. The hydrophilicity of the fiber mesh is of paramount importance, as it promotes cell spreading; however, the most commonly used polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and other hydrophilic fiber meshes immediately disintegrate in aqueous media. In contrast, the excessive hydrophobicity of the scaffolds already inhibits cells adhesion on the surface. Therefore, the hydrophilicity of the fiber meshes needed to be optimized. Scaffolds with different polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/chitosan/citric acid ratios were prepared. The addition of chitosan and the heat initiated cross-linkage of the polymers via citric acid enhanced the scaffolds' hydrophobicity. The optimization of this property could be followed by contact angle measurements, and the increased number of cross-linkages were also supported by IR spectroscopy results. The fibers' physical parameters were monitored via low-vacuum scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). As biocompatibility is essential for dental applications, Alamar Blue assay was used to prove that meshes do not have any negative effects on dental pulp stem cells. Research Highlights: We examined the vegetation appearing in forest-steppes in the Pannon region. In the present survey taxonomical relations of the dominant Festuca species were examined. Background and Objectives: After deforestation and shrubcutting bare soil patches exposed to anthropogenous effects provided an opportunity for new vegetation to form. Materials and Methods: Inflorescence parameters and micromorphological characters of the leaves were examined in a new taxon and compared with two, presumably closely related, species of the genus Festuca L. Festuca tomanii Korneck & T.Gregor, with silvery leaf surface, Festuca vaginata W. K. and Festuca pseudovaginata Penksza were compared based on 24 traits of the inflorescence and their leaf anatomy studied on leaf cross-sections. Moreover, leaf micromorphological features were compared using a stereomicroscope, a scanning electron microscope completed with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy measurements and phytolith analysis method to establish the taxonomic applications of the micromorphological characters of the epidermis. Results: The awns of the lemma of Festuca tomanii were shown to be longer than those of the two other species. Festuca vaginata and Festuca pseudovaginata specimen showed low variability in inflorescence parameters but inflorescence characters were not uniform because the panicle of Festuca tomanii individuals was found to be bigger in the northern part than the panicles originating from the southern part of the sampled area. The phytolith assemblages of the Festuca pseudovaginata and Festuca tomanii differ from the Festuca vaginata in the abundance of ELONGATE SINUATE phytolith morphotype. Conclusions: we confirmed the appearance of F. vaginata in natural grasslands and discovered new occurrences of F. pseudovaginata and F. tomanii. F. pseudovaginata inhabits only the Pannon region, we found endemic and natural stands of it, but in its secondary habitats it was confirmed as a completely new species. Furthermore, taxa of disturbed vegetations are currently being examined. These habitats are potential hotspots of speciation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Knowledge of an exact value of the relative detection factor (RDF) is important for correct quantification of measurements of Secondary Neutral Mass Spectrometry (SNMS). A special crystal ingot was grown from the vapor phase to determine this coefficient for PbTe binary telluride. Sputtering of the samples was carried out by Ar+ ions with energy of 350 eV. High structural quality of the crystal grown from vapor phase allowed minimizing the density of the surface structures forming on the sputtered surface and the dimple relief of the surface. The magnitude of RDF is determined and the analytical expression is given for its energy dependence, taking into account correction caused by the impact of the transmission factors which determine the fractions of emitted Pb and Te atoms collected into the mass spectrometer. To ensure clinical success, the implant and the surrounding bone tissue must not only be integrated, but also must not be suspected of infection. In this work, an antibacterial and bioactive nanostructured calcium silicate (CaSi) layer on titanium substrate by an electrospray deposition method was prepared, followed by annealing at 700, 750 and 800 °C to improve the bonding strength of the CaSi coating. The phase composition, microstructure and bonding strength of the CaSi coatings were examined. Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs), Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) species were used to analyze the osteogenic and antibacterial activity of the coatings, respectively. Experimental results showed that the as-prepared CaSi coating was mainly composted of β-dicalcium silicate phase with a particle size of about 300 nm. After annealing, the thickness of the oxidation reaction layer increased obviously from 0.3 μm to 1 μm with increase in temperature, which was confirmed by the cross-sectional morphology and element depth profile. The bonding strength of the coating annealed at 750 °C (19.0 MPa) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that of the as-prepared coating (4.4 MPa) and the ISO 13,779 standard (15 MPa). The results of antibacterial efficacy and stem cell osteogenesis consistently elaborated that the 750 °C-annealed coating had higher activity than the as-prepared coating and the Ti control. It is concluded that after annealing at 750 °C, the CaSi nanoparticle-coated Ti implant had good bond strength, osteogenic and antibacterial activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
