Loss of a sensory modality triggers global adaptation across brain areas, allowing the remaining senses to guide behavior more effectively. There are specific synaptic and circuit plasticity observed across many sensory areas, which suggests potential widespread changes in activity. Here we used a cFosTRAP2 mouse line to drive tdTomato (tdT) expression in active cells to spatially map the extent of activity changes in various sensory areas in adult mice of both sexes following two modes of visual deprivation. We found that in the primary visual cortex (V1), both dark exposure (DE) and enucleation (EN) caused an initial loss of active cells followed by a partial rebound, which occurred relatively more in the superficial layers. A similar pattern was observed in the secondary visual cortex, especially in the lateral areas (V2L). The spared primary sensory cortices adapted distinctly. In the primary somatosensory barrel cortex (S1BF), there was a change in the density of active cells dependent on the duration and the mode of visual deprivation. In the primary auditory cortex (A1), there was a relative reduction in the density of active cells in the superficial layers without a significant change in the overall density. There were minimal changes in the active cell density in the secondary cortices of the spared senses and the multisensory retrosplenial cortex (RSP). Treatment of municipal wastewater reduces the concentrations of some pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), hormones, and drugs of abuse. However, reduced concentrations of these micropollutants in wastewater may not correlate with reduced toxicity because transformations of micropollutants and/or the formation of disinfection by-products may generate toxic compounds. In the present study, we prepared extracts by solid phase extraction of samples collected from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) at various stages of treatment and tested these extracts for toxicity to early life stages of Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes). Toxicity data for extracts prepared from a WWTP with secondary treatment showed that the numbers of exposed embryos (n = 12 per treatment) that did not hatch increased from 1 of 12 for the treatment with untreated effluent to 5 of 12 for the treatment with final treated effluent. For extracts prepared from a WWTP with tertiary treatment, toxicity among exposed embryos (n = 12 per treatment) also increased with each step of wastewater treatment, as shown by mortalities of 2 of 12 and 8 of 12 in treatments with extracts from untreated and final treated effluent, respectively, as well as an increase in the numbers of embryos that did not hatch from 2 of 12 to 9 of 12 in treatments with untreated and final treated effluent, respectively. Ozonation of treated wastewater collected from a third WWTP caused a high incidence of delayed hatch in exposed embryos (n = 24 per treatment). However, hatching success and the numbers of developmental abnormalities in embryos from this ozonation treatment were not different from controls. The present study shows the value of including toxicity testing to assess the effectiveness of technologies for treatment of municipal wastewater. We report 2 patients with unusual cases of infective endocarditis. The first patient had a large, mural vegetation on left ventricle that was diagnosed with transthoracic echocardiography; and the second patient had a large, mobile vegetation in the descending prosthetic aorta with an abscess cavity around the vessel, diagnosed by transesophageal echocardiography. This report confirms the usefulness of transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography in the diagnosis and management of uncommon cases of endocarditis.

Through the retrospective study of 210 HIV Ab+ patients in different disease's stages, recovered in the "D. Cotugno-Naples" hospital during the period February 1989-February 1991, the authors have valued the prevalence of cardiological alterations underlined by ecocardiograph. Pericardial pouring has been observed in four patients out of thirty, belonged to stages II, III and ARC. Ventricles' movement alterations have been observed in twenty patients out of thirty (66%), belonged prevalently to the fourth group. Kaposi's sarcoma has been observed in two patients out of thirty (6.6%), belonged to the fourth group. In the patients showing alterations, the authors have also noticed a correlation among the observed cardiological alterations and the immunital outline and the frequent homosexuality's presence. The follow up between the alterations' observation and the possible patient's death is on an average 4.3 months (range 1-12). They suggest that a wider and more precocious ecocardiographical research of HIV Ab+ patients is the only way, at the moment, to underline and follow the cardiac alterations' evolution, also in relation to a precocious antiretroviral therapy.

200 mg UDPG or placebo respectively were administered after an observation period of 1 week to two randomly constructed groups of patients aged 15-35 yr with acute viral hepatitis but no prior history of disease. In the treated patients, mean decreases were most marked and most rapid in the case of SGOT, SGPT, alkaline phosphatase and total bilirubinaemia. These results offer good reason for supposing that UDPG can be usefully employed in the management of acute viral hepatitis.
