Purpose: This self-controlled study aimed to clarify whether indocyanine green (ICG) could be an alternative tracer in the absence of radioisotope (RI) for combined imaging of axillary sentinel lymph node (SLN) in breast cancer. Methods: Primary breast cancer, clinically axillary node-negative patients (n = 182) were prospectively enrolled from March 2015 to November 2020. ICG, methylene blue (MB), and RI were used to perform axillary sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB). The main observation index was the positivity of ICG + MB vs. RI + MB in axillary SLNB; the secondary observation indicators were the axillary SLN detection rate, mean number of axillary SLNs detected, mean number of metastatic axillary SLNs detected, and safety. Results: All 182 patients had axillary SLNs; a total of 925 axillary SLNs were detected. Pathological examination confirmed metastatic axillary SLN in 42 patients (total of 79 metastatic SLNs). Positivity, detection rate of SLNs, detection rate of metastatic SLNs, and the number of metastatic SLNs detected were comparable with RI+MB and ICG+MB (p > 0.05). The mean number of axillary SLNs detected was significantly higher with ICG+MB than with RI+MB (4.99 ± 2.42 vs. 4.02 ± 2.33, p < 0.001). No tracer-related adverse events occurred. Conclusions: ICG appears to be a safe and effective axillary SLN tracer, and a feasible alternative to RI in combined imaging for axillary SLN of breast cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Functional magnetic resonance imaging of the brain has helped to reveal mechanisms of pain perception in health and disease. Recently, imaging approaches have been developed that allow recording neural activity simultaneously in the brain and in the spinal cord. These approaches offer the possibility to examine pain perception in the entire central pain system and in addition, to investigate cortico-spinal interactions during pain processing. Although cortico-spinal imaging is a promising technique, it bears challenges concerning data acquisition and data analysis strategies. In this review, we discuss studies that applied simultaneous imaging of the brain and spinal cord to explore central pain processing. Furthermore, we describe different MR-related acquisition techniques, summarize advantages and disadvantages of approaches that have been implemented so far and present software that has been specifically developed for the analysis of spinal fMRI data to address challenges of spinal data analysis.

We describe a universal system for research in combined real-time optoacoustic (OA) and laser-ultrasonic (LU) imaging. The results of its testing on the task of needle insertion into the blood vessel model diagnostics are presented. In OA mode, where laser light is absorbed directly in the sample, the contents of blood vessel model is clearly visible. In LU mode, where the short ultrasonic probe pulse scattered on the sample is detected, the needle is clearly visible. The developed solution combining OA and LU imaging modalities due to the common detection system allowed real-time diagnostics of the position of medical needles (0.63 mm and 0.7 mm in diameter) inside blood vessel models (1.6 mm and 2.4 mm in diameter). Frame rate was 10 Hz. High longitudinal spatial resolution of the system − 0.1 mm − allows distinguishing the two walls of the vessel model and the position of the needle inside.

State-of-the-art patient management frequently requires the use of non-invasive imaging methods to assess the anatomy, function or molecular-biological conditions of patients or study subjects. Such imaging methods can be singular, providing either anatomical or molecular information, or they can be combined, thus, providing “anato-metabolic” information. Hybrid imaging denotes image acquisitions on systems that physically combine complementary imaging modalities for an improved diagnostic accuracy and confidence as well as for increased patient comfort. The physical combination of formerly independent imaging modalities was driven by leading innovators in the field of clinical research and benefited from technological advances that permitted the operation of PET and MR in close physical proximity, for example. This review covers milestones of the development of various hybrid imaging systems for use in clinical practice and small-animal research. Special attention is given to technological advances that helped the adoption of hybrid imaging, as well as to introducing methodological concepts that benefit from the availability of complementary anatomical and biological information, such as new types of image reconstruction and data correction schemes. The ultimate goal of hybrid imaging is to provide useful, complementary and quantitative information during patient work-up. Hybrid imaging also opens the door to multi-parametric assessment of diseases, which will help us better understand the causes of various diseases that currently contribute to a large fraction of healthcare costs.

This article provides a collaborative perspective of the discussions and conclusions from the fifth international workshop of combined positron emission tomorgraphy (PET)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that was held in Tübingen, Germany, from February 15 to 19, 2016. Specifically, we summarise the second part of the workshop made up of invited presentations from active researchers in the field of PET/MRI and associated fields augmented by round table discussions and dialogue boards with specific topics. This year, this included practical advice as to possible approaches to moving PET/MRI into clinical routine, the use of PET/MRI in brain receptor imaging, in assessing cardiovascular diseases, cancer, infection, and inflammatory diseases. To address perceived challenges still remaining to innovatively integrate PET and MRI system technologies, a dedicated round table session brought together key representatives from industry and academia who were engaged with either the conceptualisation or early adoption of hybrid PET/MRI systems. Discussions during the workshop highlighted that emerging unique applications of PET/MRI such as the ability to provide multi-parametric quantitative and visual information which will enable not only overall disease detection but also disease characterisation would eventually be regarded as compelling arguments for the adoption of PET/MR. However, as indicated by previous workshops, evidence in favour of this observation is only growing slowly, mainly due to the ongoing inability to pool data cohorts from independent trials as well as different systems and sites. The participants emphasised that moving from status quo to status go entails the need to adopt standardised imaging procedures and the readiness to act together prospectively across multiple PET/MRI sites and vendors. This workshop was held a year after the initial positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance (PET/MR) workshop in Tübingen, which was recently reported in this journal. The discussions at the 2013 workshop, however, differed substantially from those of the initial workshop, attesting to the progress of combined PET/MR as an innovative imaging modality. Discussions were focused on the search for truly novel, unique clinical and research applications as well as technical issues such as reliable and accurate approaches for attenuation and scatter correction of PET emission data. The workshop provided hands-on experience with PET and MR imaging. In addition, structured and moderated open discussion sessions, including six dialogue boards and two roundtable discussions, provided input from current and future PET/MR imaging users. We report from the First International Workshop on positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) that was organized by the University of Tübingen in March 2012. Approximately 100 imaging experts in MRI, PET and PET/computed tomography (CT), among them early adopters of pre-clinical and clinical PET/MRI technology, gathered from March 19 to 24, 2012 in Tübingen, Germany. The objective of the workshop was to provide a forum for sharing first-hand methodological and clinical know-how and to assess the potential of combined PET/MRI in various applications from pre-clinical research to scientific as well as clinical applications in humans. The workshop was comprised of pro-active sessions including tutorials, specific discussion panels and grand rounds. Pre-selected experts moderated the sessions, and feedback from the subsequent discussions is presented here to a greater readership. Naturally, the summaries provided herein are subjective descriptions of the hopes and challenges of PET/MR imaging as seen by the workshop attendees at a very early point in time of adopting PET/MRI technology and, as such, represent only a snapshot of current approaches. A new method for non-destructive analysis has been developed using a combined neutron/X-ray imaging system at the Missouri Science & Technology Reactor (MSTR). The interactions of neutrons and X-ray photons with matter produce differing characteristic information, resulting in distinctly different visual images. In order to obtain a more comprehensive picture of the structural and compositional data for a desired object, a prototype imaging system has been designed which utilizes neutron and X-ray imaging simultaneously without obstructing the beam geometry for each imaging mechanism. The current system is optimized for the imaging of small to medium sized objects of 0.5-50 mm. This new imaging capability in place at the MSTR promises great advances in the field of non-destructive testing, especially for nuclear engineering, nuclear medical science, and material science research. In an imaging object, a range of atomic number values and thermal cross-sections may be present. Where multiple materials having similar atomic number and differing thermal cross-section or vice versa may be present, exclusive neutron or X-ray analysis may exhibit shortcomings in distinguishing interfaces. However, fusing the neutron image and X-ray image into a combined image offers the strengths of both and may provide a superior method of analysis. In this paper, a novel combined X-ray and neutron imaging system will be introduced for superior analysis of certain imaging objects. Elucidating the structure and dynamics of lamellipodia and filopodia in response to different stimuli is a topic of continuing interest in cancer cells as these structures may be attractive targets for therapeutic purposes. Interestingly, a close functional relationship between these actin-rich protrusions and specialized membrane domains has been recently demonstrated. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the fine organization of these actin-rich structures and examine how they structurally may relate to detergent-resistant membrane (DRM) domains in the MTLn3 EGF/serum starvation model. For this reason, we designed a straightforward and alternative method to study cytoskeleton arrays and their associated structures by means of correlative fluorescence (/laser)- and electron microscopy (CFEM). CFEM on whole mounted breast cancer cells revealed that a lamellipodium is composed of an intricate filamentous actin web organized in various patterns after different treatments. Both actin dots and DRM's were resolved, and were closely interconnected with the surrounding cytoskeleton. Long actin filaments were repeatedly observed extending beyond the leading edge and their density and length varied after different treatments. Furthermore, CFEM also allowed us to demonstrate the close structural association of DRMs with the cytoskeleton in general and the filamentous/dot-like structural complexes in particular, suggesting that they are all functionally linked and consequently may regulate the cell's fingertip dynamics. Finally, electron tomographic modelling on the same CFEM samples confirmed that these extensions are clearly embedded within the cytoskeletal matrix of the lamellipodium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The subject matter of this paper concerns advanced techniques of imaging used in diagnosis and minimally invasive procedures applied in non-operable cases of the digestive tract tumour therapy. The role of optical techniques in current medical imaging is significant. Optical properties of transilluminated or illuminated tissues and organs depend on strong light absorption and scattering. Numerous issues related to the result interpretation still remain unsolved. Effectiveness and precision can be especially improved when some combined methods of imaging are used. Videoendoscopy imaging, X-ray imaging, and endoscopic ultrasound imaging are three complementary methods applied during the interventions described in this work. All interventions have concerned with the upper part of the digestive tract. Especially, interdisciplinary issues of combined medical imaging are presented using some examples of a modern approach to imaging of esophagus and biliary stenting. The selected examples of effects obtained during interventions assisted by combined imaging of the operation site are presented. The operator can have great control over the appearance of desirable effects as well as undesirable complications in order to work comfortably and safe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this work is to study the delamination of bismuth ferrite prepared by atomic layer deposition on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrate. The samples' structures and compositions are provided by XPS, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and Raman spectroscopy. The resulting films demonstrate buckling and delamination from the substrates. The composition inside the resulting bubbles is in a gaseous state. It contains the reaction products captured on the surface during the deposition of the film. The topography of Bi-Fe-O thin films was studied in vacuum and under atmospheric conditions using simultaneous SEM and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Besides complementary advanced imaging, a correlative SEM-AFM analysis provides the possibility of testing the mechanical properties by using a variation of pressure. In this work, the possibility of studying the surface tension of the thin films using a joint SEM-AFM analysis is shown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
