Stiffness and damping properties of sensitive, very soft clay sediments of the Italian Adriatic continental shelf are determined by means of two series of cyclic simple shear tests (one with 12 stages and one with two stages). The apparatus used in this research is capable of investigating the stress-strain behaviour of the soil in a wide range of shear strains from about 0.0004% to 1%. Test results were expressed in terms of small-strain shear modulus ([G.sub.0]), normalized equivalent shear modulus ([G.sub.eq]/[G.sub.0]), and damping ratio (D) versus cyclic shear-strain amplitude ([γ.sub.c]). These parameters were analyzed in the framework of existing literature by comparison with empirical correlations developed for onshore materials of different plasticity and, limited to [G.sub.0], also for soft soils. The dependence of [G.sub.0], [G.sub.eq]/[G.sub.0]-[γ.sub.c], and D-[γ.sub.c] on factors such as void ratio, stress history, and loading cycles is analyzed and discussed. Les proprietes de rigidite et d'amortissement de sediments d'argile tres molle et sensible provenant du plateau continental adriatique italien sont determinees par des essais cycliques de resistance au cisaillement simple a deux etapes (un essai a 12 etapes et un essai a 2 etapes, respectivement). L'appareil utilise dans cette etude permet d'investiguer le comportement en contrainte--deformation du sol dans un eventail de deformation en cisaillement, d'environ 0,0004% a 1%. Les resultats des essais sont exprimes en termes du module de cisaillement a faible deformation ([G.sub.0]), du module de cisaillement equivalent normalise ([G.sub.eq]/[G.sub.0]) et du rapport d'amortissement (D) versus l'amplitude de la deformation en cisaillement cyclique ([γ.sub.c]). Ces parametres sont analyses dans le cadre de la litterature existante en les comparant aux correlations empiriques developpees pour les materiaux terrestres de plasticite differente, et, seulement pour [G.sub.0], pour les sols mous. In the last few decades, seafloor imagery systems have drastically changed our vision of a mostly regular and depositional marine landscape, evidencing how erosive and mass-wasting processes are widespread in the marine environments, with particular reference to geologically-active areas. Most of the previous studies have focused on the characterization of these features, whereas a very few ones have tried to estimate what is the extent and order of magnitude of erosion rates in these areas. In this paper, we show several examples from some of the most geologically-active margins off Southern Italy aimed to a) quantify the spatial extent of such processes, b) better understand the role of submarine erosion in the morphogenesis of the coastal sector, and c) try to roughly estimate the order of magnitude of erosion rates in these areas. The results are impressive, with mass-wasting features widespread from coast down to −2600, affecting from the 52% up to 97% of the whole continental slope. Because of the narrow or totally lacking shelves in these areas, mass-wasting processes often occur close to the coast and match embayment of the coast, so indicating a key role in the morphogenesis of coastal sector, with significant implication on the related geohazard. Finally, based on a morphological approach integrated by available stratigraphic constraints we have roughly estimated average erosion rates in these areas, ranging from (at least) some mm/year to a few cm/year, i.e., some hundreds of meters up to kilometers eroded in each eustatic cycle. Despite the large uncertainties of these estimates as well as their spatial and temporal variability in response to regional and local factors, the obtained values are very high and they should be considered for future model of margin evolution, source-to-sink computation and marine/coastal geohazard assessment. In this paper, we present the first complete morphological map of the Salina offshore at a scale of 1:100,000. The submarine flanks of the Salina edifice extend down to −650 to −1300 m, are steep and characterized by an uneven morphology due to the presence of volcanic and erosive-depositional features. The volcanic features cover ∼30% of the submarine portion and include volcanic cones and bedrock outcrops. The remaining ∼70% is affected by a wide series of erosive-depositional features. Among these, features related to Late Quaternary sea level fluctuations comprise the insular shelf surrounding the island and overlying submarine terraced depositional sequences. Mass-wasting features include landslide scars, channels, fan-shaped deposits and waveforms. High-resolution multibeam bathymetry was recently collected around Lipari, the largest and most densely populated island of the Aeolian Archipelago (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea). The data were acquired within the context of marine geological studies performed in the area over the last 10 years. We present the first detailed morphological map of the Lipari offshore at 1:100,000 scale (Main Map). A rugged morphology characterizes the submarine portions of Lipari volcano, reflecting both volcanic and erosive-depositional processes. The volcanic features include cones, lava flows and bedrock outcrops. Erosive-depositional features include an insular shelf topped by submarine depositional terraces related to Late-Quaternary sea-level fluctuations, as well as landslide scars, channelized features, fan-shaped deposits and wavy bedforms. The different distribution of volcanic and erosive-depositional features on the various sectors of Lipari is mainly related to the older age of the western flank with respect to the eastern one. High-resolution morpho-bathymetric data at 1:200,000 scale obtained during the FAIVI cruise (2011) and the resulting geomorphologic map of the Terceira island offshore area (central Azores, Portugal) are presented for the first time. The uneven morphology around Terceira is primarily related to volcanic features, such as linear and cone-shaped eruptive centres and lava flows. Such features are mostly concentrated on volcanic ridges and are aligned along preferential axes, suggesting a strong interaction between tectonics and volcanic processes. The occurrence of active tectonics is also demonstrated by systems of faults cutting the seafloor to the north, east and south of the island. Mapped erosive-depositional features include an insular shelf located at < 150 m water depth (wd), small landslide headwalls, erosive scarps, channelized features and crescent-shaped bedforms. The Pontine Islands form a volcanic archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It consists of two edifices, the islands of Ponza, Palmarola and Zannone and the islands of Ventotene and Santo Stefano, respectively. The Archipelago developed during two main volcanic cycles in the Plio-Pleistocene: 1) the Pliocene episode erupted subalkaline, silica-rich volcanic units, which constitute the dominant products in the western edifice (Ponza and Zannone Islands); 2) the Pleistocene episode erupted more alkaline products, represented by evolved rocks (trachytes to peralkaline rhyolites) in the islands of Ponza and Palmarola and by basic to intermediate rocks in the eastern edifice (Ventotene and Santo Stefano Islands). In this paper we present new geochemical and petrological data from submarine rock samples collected in two oceanographic cruises and a scuba diving survey. The main result is the recovery of relatively undifferentiated lithotypes that provide further insights on the magmatic spectrum existing in the Pontine Archipelago, allowing modelling of the whole suite of rocks by fractional crystallization processes. New major and trace element data and thermodynamic constrains (by the software PELE) indicate the existence of three distinct evolutionary trends corresponding to a HK calcalkaline series in the Pliocene, followed by a transitional and then by a shoshonite series in the Pleistocene. In particular, the transitional series, so far overlooked in the literature, is required in order to explain the genesis of several peralkaline felsic rocks recognized in the Archipelago. On the whole, the new geochemical data i) confirm the orogenic signature of the suites, ii) allow to rule out an anatectic origin for both subalkaline and peralkaline rhyolites and iii) indicate highly heterogeneous mantle sources, due to crustal components variously recycled in the mantle via subduction.
