This paper examines practices of teaching and learning in the era of digitalization. More specifically, it addresses practices of teaching and learning for students with professional experience who work alongside their studies. Based on the assumption that digitalization is a means of allowing more open and flexible pathways for teaching and learning in higher education, the paper focuses on the perspectives and perceptions of both students and teachers in digital supported teaching and learning environments as forms of blended learning. It brings together findings from two qualitative empirical studies: one focused on students' perspectives of their development over the course of their studies; the second addressed teachers' perspectives and their teaching strategies and activities. Based on the findings of these two research studies, the paper outlines future perspectives for teaching and learning and the role of digitalization, with a particular emphasis on programs of lifelong learning at universities.

Background and Aims: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Cardiovascular risk is higher in women with diabetes than in men. With this study, we wanted to determine whether female children and adolescents with T1DM are more prone to cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) and an atherogenic diet than boys.Methods and Results: For this cross-sectional study, anthropometric, clinical, biochemical, and dietary intake data of 314 children with diabetes (3-18 years; 178 boys) were analysed according to age and sex. Linear and binary logistic regression was performed to test independent associations between sex, dietary intake, and CVRFs. Low-density lipoprotein -cholesterol (LDL-c), triglyceride (TG), fibre, monounsaturated fatty acid levels (all p < 0.01), and lipid (p = 0.022) intake were higher in the girls than in the boys. Multiple regression analysis showed that LDL was associated with sex, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), and lipid intake percentage (R (Kannel, 1979) [2] = 0.130; p = 0.0004) independent of age, pubertal stage, body mass index (BMI), duration of diabetes, energy, and fibre intake. Logistic regression analysis showed that high LDL-c levels were present more often in girls [odds ratio, OR; confidence interval, CI = 2.569 (1.178-5.604); p = 0.018] who had a higher dietary lipid intake percentage [OR (CI) = 1.089 (1.011-1.173); p = 0.025].Conclusions: Girls with diabetes have higher LDL-c levels associated with higher dietary lipid intake. Our findings suggest that young people with diabetes, especially girls, may benefit from early dietary interventions to reduce their cardiovascular risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The assessment of heart rate variability (HRV) is a simple non-invasive measurement technique that shows oscillations between the R-R intervals of the QRS complex. Instruments such as the ECG, heart rate monitors, and analog converters are used to assess the HRV in linear or nonlinear ways. However, more modern and simplified devices are required to monitor and interpret HRV. This study analyzed the correlation between a WCS Pulse device designed to measure R-R intervals and the electrocardiogram (ECG). The mean ± SD for the R-R intervals using the WCS Pulse and the ECG were 913.6 ± 82.2 ms and 988.1 ± 96.8 ms, respectively. For the SDNN values, the WCS Pulse was 82.2 ± 27.2 ms and the ECG was 86.1 ± 26.1 ms, and for the HR values, the WCS Pulse was 66.1 ± 10.8 beats·min-1 and the ECG was 61.4 ± 6.4 beats·min-1. The Pearson's correlation coefficient indicated that all the variables presented a strong correlation. R-R values were r = 0.93 and r² = 0.8648. For SDNN, the values were r = 0.9844 and r² = 0.9691 for time domain. Lastly, HR presented r = 0.9391 and r² = 0.882. All variables presented a significant difference of P<0.0001. The intraclass correlations were 0.7779 for R-R, 0.9633 for SDNN, and 0.7662 for HR, which represents an excellent reproducibility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The size of air pollution effect on cardiovascular diseases use to be smaller than that observed for respiratory diseases. Myocardial infarction (MI) is an acute and grave cardiovascular disease and, in general, leads patients to admissions at the intensive care units (ICU). Few MI cases are initially admitted at the infirmaries. In order to check whether estimates of air pollution effects on MI morbidity are modified by the source of health information we performed a time series study using two outcomes: MI admissions at the infirmaries and MI admissions at the ICU both for people older than 64 years of age, in hospitals of the Brazilian Public Health System in São Paulo City. We adopted generalized linear models controlling for seasonality (long and short-term trends) and weather variables using a semi-parametric smoother. The eight days cumulative effects of air pollutants were assessed using third degree polynomial distributed lag models. Our results showed that almost 70% of the daily hospital admissions due to Ml are done at the infirmaries. Despite of that, the effects of air pollutants on MI were bigger for ICU admissions. All pollutants were positively associated with the adopted outcomes but SO2 presented the strongest and statistically significant one. An interquartile range increase on SO2 concentration was associated with increases of 26% (95% CI 10;42) and 3% (95% CI -5;11) on ICU and infirmary MI admissions, respectively. We can suppose that, maybe, there is a misclassification of the MI infirmary admissions leading to overestimated numbers. Also, its clear that, despite the absolute number of events, ICU admissions data provides a more adequate estimate of the size of air pollution effects on MI admissions.
