This paper proposes a data-driven approach to detect the switching actions and topology transitions in distribution networks. It is based on the real time analysis of time-series voltages measurements. The analysis approach draws on data from high-precision phasor measurement units (μPMUs or synchrophasors) for distribution networks. The key fact is that time-series measurement data taken from the distribution network has specific patterns representing state transitions such as topology changes. The proposed algorithm is based on comparison of actual voltage measurements with a library of signatures derived from the possible topologies simulation. The IEEE 33-bus model is used for the algorithm validation.

Network topology in distribution networks is often unknown, because most switches are not equipped with measurement devices and communication links. However, knowledge about the actual topology is critical for safe and reliable grid operation. This paper proposes a voting-based topology detection method based on micro-synchrophasor measurements. The minimal difference between measured and calculated voltage angle or voltage magnitude, respectively, indicates the actual topology. Micro-synchrophasors or micro-Phasor Measurement Units (μPMU) are high-precision devices that can measure voltage angle differences on the order of ten millidegrees. This accuracy is important for distribution networks due to the smaller angle differences as compared to transmission networks. For this paper, a microgrid test bed is implemented in MATLAB with simulated measurements from μPMUs as well as SCADA measurement devices. The results show that topologies can be detected with high accuracy. Additionally, topology detection by voltage angle shows better results than detection by voltage magnitude.

The algorithm proposed here is based on the comparison of the actual signature of a recent state transition against a library of signatures derived from topology simulations. State estimation is a fundamental task in power systems. Although distribution systems are increasingly equipped with sensing devices and smart meters, measurements are typically reported at different rates and asynchronously; these aspects pose severe strains on workhorse state estimation algorithms, which are designed to process batches of data collected in a synchronous manner from all the measurement units. In this paper, we develop a novel state estimation algorithm to continuously update the estimate of the state based on measurements received in an asynchronous manner from measurement units. The synthesis of the algorithm hinges on a proximal-point type method, implemented in an online fashion, and capable of processing measurements received sequentially from sensors. A performance analysis is presented by providing bounds on the estimation error in terms of the mean and variance that hold at each iteration and asymptotically. The scheme is also compared with a more traditional Weighted Least Squares estimator that compensates for the lack of measurement data by using, as pseudo measurements, the measurement retrieved during a certain time window. Recovering the distribution grid topology is essential to perform several distribution system operator functions. Many algorithms that address the topology recovery problem have already been proposed in the literature. Most are based on a priori information regarding which buses are fed by which substation; however, this information might not be available because frequent grid reconfigurations change the distribution grid portion connected to each substation. This paper addresses the problem of assigning every substation the set of buses that it is feeding, given field data. First, the aforementioned task is cast as a nonconvex optimization problem. Second, a relaxed version of the optimization problem is solved via the alternating direction method of multipliers. Distribution grids constitute complex networks of lines oftentimes reconfigured to minimize losses, balance loads, alleviate faults, or for maintenance purposes. Topology monitoring becomes a critical task for optimal grid scheduling. While synchrophasor installations are limited in low-voltage grids, utilities have an abundance of smart meter data at their disposal. In this context, a statistical learning framework is put forth for verifying single-phase grid structures using non-synchronized voltage data. The related maximum likelihood task boils down to minimizing a non-convex function over a non-convex set. The function involves the sample voltage covariance matrix and the feasible set is relaxed to its convex hull. Asymptotically in the number of data, the actual topology yields the global minimizer of the original and the relaxed problems. Under a simplified data model, the function turns out to be convex, thus offering optimality guarantees. Prior information on line statuses is also incorporated via a maximum a-posteriori approach. The formulated tasks are tackled using solvers having complementary strengths. Numerical tests using real data on benchmark feeders demonstrate that reliable topology estimates can be acquired even with a few smart meter data, while the non-convex schemes exhibit superior line verification performance at the expense of additional computational time. This paper proposes a novel method for topology detection in distribution networks called the Time-series signature verification method for topology detection (TSV-Top). The TSV-Top analyzes data from phasor measurement units (PMU or $\mu$ PMU) installed on power distribution feeders. The TSV-Top relies on the fact that measurement data time series from power systems contain similar trends when network topology changes occur, and basically performs the projection of actual voltage phasorial patterns onto a library of signals associated with possible topology transictions of a given distribution network. The proposed algorithm is validated using a 33-bus testbed and the IEEE 123-bus feeder, and then compared with another state-of-the-art algorithm using the IEEE 37-bus feeder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we consider a voltage control problem in power distribution grids. The specific goal is that of keeping the voltages within preassigned operating limits by commanding the reactive power output of the microgenerators connected to the grid. We propose three strategies. The first two strategies are purely local, meaning that each microgenerator updates the amount of reactive power to be injected based only on local measurements of the voltages’ magnitude. Instead the third one is distributed, namely, the microgenerators, to perform the updating steps, require some additional information coming from the neighboring agents. The local strategies are simpler to be implemented, but they might fail in solving the voltage control problem. Instead, the distributed one requires the microgenerators to be endowed with communication capabilities, but it is effective in driving the voltages within the admissible intervals and, additionally, it exploits the cooperation among the agents to reach also a power losses minimization objective. This paper proposes a technique to control distributed energy resources in low-voltage microgrids aiming at (i) allowing power flow control at the point of connection with the upstream grid, (ii) keeping voltage profiles within the operational limits. The first feature is crucial in smart low-voltage power systems. In fact, it enables both demand-responses, which is extremely valuable from the point of view of distribution system operators and for energy trading, and the autonomous operation of the microgrid. The latter can be achieved by regulating to zero the power exchanged with the main grid. The second feature allows to limit voltage increases due to active power injection by distributed energy resources and, thus, to limit stresses on the electrical infrastructure and the served loads, which is a concrete issue as renewables become widely deployed in the low-voltage scenario. The proposed approach is firstly described in detail, then a systematic analysis of its local and global properties is reported.
