Snoezelen Multisensory Stimulation (SMSS) is a non‐pharmacological intervention that provides controlled multisensorial environments to stimulate the primary senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste, proprioceptive and vestibular. Even though the use and potential of SMSS have been widespread in the literature regarding certain target populations (autism, developmental disabilities) and settings (e.g. leisure, therapeutic), its effectiveness in older adults with neurocognitive disorders (e.g. dementia, mild cognitive impairment) and other pathologies (e.g. psychiatric disorders, oncological diseases) is still unclear. Therefore, a systematic review of the literature was conducted to address this issue. The recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) and of the Cochrane Collaboration were followed. An initial search on PubMed and Scopus databases resulted in 86 articles of which 14 met inclusion criteria and were reviewed in detail. The outcomes showed that most of the studies (n = 13) focused on the effects of SMSS on behaviour and mood in older adults with major cognitive disorders (i.e. dementia). Although there is scarce literature on its impact on cognition, psychophysiological measures (e.g. heart rate, oxygen saturation), daily living functionality and quality of life, this type of intervention seems to contribute to delaying the worsening in severity of the neurocognitive disorders from the mildest to the most severe stages. Likewise, it is legitimate to consider the possibility of potential benefits to older adults with less severe neurocognitive disorders or other pathologies, but more research is needed. This paper introduces the mathematical formalization of two probabilistic procedures for susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) and susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) infectious diseases epidemic models, over Erdös-Rényi contact networks. In our approach, we consider the epidemic threshold, for both models, defined by the inverse of the spectral radius of the associated adjacency matrices, which expresses the network topology. The epidemic threshold dynamics are analyzed, depending on the global dynamics of the network structure. The main contribution of this work is the relationship established between the epidemic threshold and the topological entropy of the Erdös-Rényi contact networks. In addition, a relationship between the basic reproduction number and the topological entropy is also stated. The trigger of the infectious state is studied, where the probability value of the stability of the infected state after the first instant, depending on the degree of the node in the seed set, is proven. Some numerical studies are included and illustrate the implementation of the probabilistic procedures introduced, complementing the discussion on the choice of the seed set. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Under perturbing conditions such as infection with Leishmania, a protozoan parasite living within the phagosomes in mammalian macrophages, cellular and organellar structures, and metabolism are dynamically regulated for neutralizing the pressure of parasitism. However, how modulations of the host cell metabolic pathways support Leishmania infection remains unknown. Herein, we report that lipid accumulation heightens the susceptibility of mice to L. donovani infection and promotes resistance to first‐line anti‐leishmanial drugs. Despite being pro‐inflammatory, the in vitro generated uninfected lipid‐laden macrophages (LLMs) or adipose‐tissue macrophages (ATMs) display lower levels of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Upon infection, LLMs secrete higher IL‐10 and lower IL‐12p70 cytokines, inhibiting CD4+ T cell activation and Th1 response suggesting a key modulatory role for intramacrophage lipid accumulation in anti‐leishmanial host defence. We, therefore, examined this causal relationship between lipids and immunomodulation using an in vivo high‐fat diet (HFD) mouse model. HFD increased the susceptibility to L. donovani infection accompanied by a defective CD4+ Th1 and CD8+ T cell response. The white adipose tissue of HFD mice displays increased susceptibility to L. donovani infection with the preferential infection of F4/80+CD11b+CD11c+ macrophages with higher levels of neutral lipids reserve. The HFD increased resistance to a first‐line anti‐leishmanial drug associated with a defective adaptive immune response. These data demonstrate that the accumulation of neutral lipids contributes to susceptibility to visceral leishmaniasis hindering host‐protective immune response and reducing the efficacy of antiparasitic drug therapies. This paper concerns the study of the linear threshold model in random networks, specifically in Erdös-Rényi networks. In our approach, we consider an activation threshold defined by the expected value for the node degree and the associated influence activation mapping. According to these assumptions, we present a theoretical procedure for the linear threshold model, under fairly general conditions, regarding the topological structure of the networks and the activation threshold. Aiming at the dynamics of the influence maximization process, we analyze and discuss different choices for the seed set based on several centrality measures along with the state conditions for the procedure to trigger. The topological entropy established for Erdös-Rényi networks defines a topological order for this type of random networks. Sufficient conditions are presented for this topological entropy to be characterized by the spectral radius of the associated adjacency matrices. Consequently, a number of properties are proved. The threshold dynamics are analyzed through the relationship between the activation threshold and the topological entropy. Numerical studies are included to illustrate the theoretical results. In this study, we used machine learning techniques to reconstruct the wavelength dependence of the absorption coefficient of human normal and pathological colorectal mucosa tissues. Using only diffuse reflectance spectra from the ex vivo mucosa tissues as input to algorithms, several approaches were tried before obtaining good matching between the generated absorption coefficients and the ones previously calculated for the mucosa tissues from invasive experimental spectral measurements. Considering the optimized match for the results generated with the multilayer perceptron regression method, we were able to identify differentiated accumulation of lipofuscin in the absorption coefficient spectra of both mucosa tissues as we have done before with the corresponding results calculated directly from invasive measurements. Considering the random forest regressor algorithm, the estimated absorption coefficient spectra almost matched the ones previously calculated. By subtracting the absorption of lipofuscin from these spectra, we obtained similar hemoglobin ratios at 410/550 nm: 18.9-fold/9.3-fold for the healthy mucosa and 46.6-fold/24.2-fold for the pathological mucosa, while from direct calculations, those ratios were 19.7-fold/10.1-fold for the healthy mucosa and 33.1-fold/17.3-fold for the pathological mucosa. The higher values obtained in this study indicate a higher blood content in the pathological samples used to measure the diffuse reflectance spectra. In light of such accuracy and sensibility to the presence of hidden absorbers, with a different accumulation between healthy and pathological tissues, good perspectives become available to develop minimally invasive spectroscopy methods for in vivo early detection and monitoring of colorectal cancer. Commercial distribution corresponds, in the economic process, to the activity of intermediation between supply and demand, through which the producer, using intermediaries, manages to deliver products and services to consumers, while at the same time seeks to know and satisfy the demands of the latter. Within the industrial revolution, mechanization combined with new production techniques, allowed production directed towards self-consumption to be replaced by surplus production, on a large scale, which created the need to dispose of goods. With the advent of industrial capitalism, the industrial enterprise started to assume the central role of the economic system, with trade being relegated to a secondary role. The producers, in view of the surpluses resulting from mass production, began to feel the need to resort to intermediaries who would assume the distribution of the products in several markets, namely, in distant markets. Distribution gradually begins to become independent from the production, presenting itself as an auxiliary activity for the industry. In this sense, commercial distribution is no longer centred on the physical distribution of products, but takes on a series of activities aimed at adjusting supply to demand, which includes attracting customers, providing after-sales services, financing and risk-taking, consultancy, promotion and advertising, among others. These activities are articulated in more or less complex processes. Thus, distribution begins to represent the main means to increase the company's profits, becoming the object of study and deepening. However, given the insufficiency of the occasional purchase and sale contracts to cover the web of intricate obligations required in the distribution of goods to the various operators of a distribution chain, leading to an undesirable increase in distribution costs, there was a need to create more sophisticated contractual schemes. In contracts, such as franchising, it is possible to witness the productive integration of the distributor into the producer network, accompanied, in different degrees of intensity, by the attribution and recognition of intellectual property rights. This contract was associated, both in the United States, a country where it first appeared, and in Europe, to periods of economic recession, in which excess supply in face of demand will compel producers to conquer new markets. This objective, owing to the difficulties of the producer to assume the distribution of the products, given the lack of capital, characteristic of post-recessive times, will be achieved through the delivery of the distributive function to the distributor, thus seeking, in accordance with the principle of division of labour, achieve greater efficiency. The crisis currently experienced worldwide following the Pandemic COVD 19 and the role that this contract can play in the economic recovery, makes it imperative to revisit this contract in order to approach its modalities, advantages and the legal framework. As a generalization of the formulas proved by Bhatia, Grover and Jain (Derivatives of tensor powers and their norms. Electron J Linear Algebra. 2015;30:Article 22) Carvalho and Freitas obtained formulas for directional derivatives, of all orders, for generalized matrix functions and for every symmetric tensor power associated with a character ξ of a subgroup G of the symmetric group S m . Throughout our work, we used some well-known formulas for the derivatives of all orders of a multilinear map, since the maps that we studied are all multilinear. In the mid-70s, the US antitrust jurisprudence finally embraced the economic approaches developed at the University of Chicago on the 30s. The Chicago School of Economics has as its main characteristic the defence of the private economy and of a limited intervention of the government, which underlies the idea that individual freedoms depend on the existence of a system based on private initiative and market economy, affirming the interdependence of capitalism and democracy. This School was fiercely against the excessive intervention of competition authorities and courts in competition, to which attributed as final goal purpose efficiency maximization. From a methodological point of view, Chicago School will be renowned by the importance of neoclassical price theory and empirical analysis. Later, within New Institutional Economics, will rise another economic analysis, such us Transaction Costs Economics and Property Rights Theory, that even though receiving minor attention from the literature, being until now strangely excluded from the economic and legal mainstream of the competition, will also inspire Antitrust Law. The Transaction Costs Economics will demonstrate that the transactions that make up the market are conditioned by the constraints of behaviour and information, giving rise to transaction costs that make markets imperfect. The institutions in this School are, therefore, structures that, by influencing individuals' behaviour, mitigate market imperfections, becoming indispensable in economic analysis. The analysis of these economic approaches will reveal that both gave the utmost importance to transaction costs, as Chicago School, without explicitly mentioning transaction costs, also considered it in antitrust analysis. In this paper, we aim at demonstrating that this proximity between Chicago School and Transaction Costs Economics is reflected in US antitrust jurisprudence. Therefore, it is pertinent to begin by summarizing the main arguments developed by these economic theories, which later received merits by the courts, thus making more evident the effect they had on US antitrust jurisprudence, often ignored by literature. In the middle of the 80s, an economic approach, that brings together a group of academics that stand out by the harsh criticisms to the approach of the School of Chicago towards competition, arouses interest among the scholars. This school will call into question some of the foundations and justifications presented by the Chicago School, by questioning, in first place, the single monopoly profit theory. In this sense, these authors will develop a set of models designed to demonstrate that the monopolist in the primary market has incentives to monopolize the secondary market. This School will also analyse the vertical restraints, standing out the development of Raising Rivals' Costs Theory and offer an explanation for free-riding. The Chicago School, on the other hand, is a coherent and heterogeneous economic school, responsible for the theory of oligopoly and collusion, which, by advocating the criminalization of price fixing, proceeded to analyse the anticompetitive effects of predatory pricing and various restrictions vertical. In this paper, we aim at demonstrating that the roots of the Post-Chicago School go back to the Chicago School, highlighting the contributions of Director and Levi in the construction of the Raising Rivals' Cost Theory and, considering the connection between the Chicago school and Transaction Costs Economics, the most complete empirical analysis of this theory led by Elizabeth Granitz and Benjamin Klein. The continuous omission of the Transaction Costs Economics, considering the steadiness between both, is one of the most negative aspects of this school, which can only be explained by the fact that heterogeneity of the Chicago School and Transaction Costs Economics unmask much of the criticism knitted. To characterize the optical clearing treatments in human colorectal tissues and possibly to differentiate between treatments of normal and pathological tissues, we have used a simple indirect method derived from Mie scattering theory to estimate the kinetics of the reduced scattering coefficient. A complementary method to estimate the kinetics of the scattering coefficient is also used so that the kinetics of the anisotropy factor and of the refractive index are also calculated. Both methods rely only on the thickness and collimated transmittance measurements made during treatment. The results indicate the expected time dependencies for the optical properties of both tissues: an increase in the refractive index and anisotropy factor and a decrease in the scattering coefficients. The similarity in the kinetics obtained for normal and pathological tissues indicates that optical clearing treatments can be applied also in pathological tissues to produce similar effects. The estimated time dependencies using experimental spectral data in the range from 400 to 1000 nm allowed us to compare the kinetics of the optical properties between different wavelengths. The development of the internal market, based on the principle of freedom to provide services, as stated in article 56 TFEU, rendered common the posting of workers to another EU Member State. The risk of leading to social dumping in the host Member State, resulting from the less favourable working conditions of the sending Member State, justified Directive 96/71/EC. Collective bargaining, which has always taken on a prominent place in the posting of workers framework provided for in Directive 96/71/EC, is clearly reinforced by Directive (EU) 2018/957 that amended Directive 96/71/EC. The caselaw of the CJEU, however, has revealed that in some cases the enforcement of the host Member State working conditions, in view of the lack of harmonization of labour law in the Member States in relation to minimum protection mandatory rules, can paradoxically constitute a restriction on the freedom to provide services. The analysis of the amendments introduced by the Directive (EU) 2018/957 will demonstrate that, despite creating a favourable legislative framework for fair competitive conditions between national undertakings and the undertakings that post workers, may compromise the delicate balance between the protection of workers and the freedom to provide services. The distinction between an employment contract and a provision of services contract is a recurring theme in the Portuguese courts, regularly associated with the use of the provision of services contract to dissimulate an employment relationship under an apparent self-employment rapport. The lawmaker, in order to fight the misuse of the provision of services contract within an employment rapport, established, through Lei 63/2013, 27.08, updated by the Lei 55/2017, 17.07, an administrative procedure in article 15-A of Lei 107/2009, 14.09, and a special lawsuit to recognize the existence of an employment contract, in article 186-K of the Código de Processo do Trabalho (Labour Procedure Code- CPT), whenever there is a provision of activity with the characteristics of an employment contract. The analysis of the most recent higher courts case law reveals a clear trend to qualify rapports, whose legal nature is under analysis, as provision of services contract, in a sense, paradoxically, contrary to the efforts made by the lawmaker. In this paper, we therefore seek to scrutinize this incomprehensible favouring by the higher courts of the provision of services contract, whose maintenance may lead in the future to an inevitable weakening of the employment contract, damaging employees, Labour Law and Society. The optical dispersion and water content of human liver were experimentally studied to estimate the optical dispersions of tissue scatterers and dry matter. Using temporal measurements of collimated transmittance [Tc(t)] of liver samples under treatment at different glycerol concentrations, free water and diffusion coefficient (Dgl) of glycerol in liver were found as 60.0% and 8.2 × 10−7 cm2∕s, respectively. Bound water was calculated as the difference between the reported total water of 74.5% and found free water. The optical dispersion of liver was calculated from the measurements of refractive index (RI) of tissue samples made for different wavelengths between 400 and 1000 nm. Using liver and water optical dispersions at 20°C and the free and total water, the dispersions for liver scatterers and dry matter were calculated. The estimated dispersions present a decreasing behavior with wavelength. The dry matter dispersion shows higher RI values than liver scatterers, as expected. Considering 600 nm, dry matter has an RI of 1.508, whereas scatterers have an RI of 1.444. These dispersions are useful to characterize the RI matching mechanism in optical clearing treatments, provided that [Tc(t)] and thickness measurements are performed during treatment. Colorectal carcinoma is a major health concern worldwide and its high incidence and mortality require accurate screening methods. Following endoscopic examination, polyps must be removed for histopathological characterization. Aiming to contribute to the improvement of current endoscopy methods of colorectal carcinoma screening or even for future development of laser treatment procedures, we studied the diffusion properties of glucose and water in colorectal healthy and pathological mucosa. These parameters characterize the tissue dehydration and the refractive index matching mechanisms of optical clearing (OC). We used ex vivo tissues to measure the collimated transmittance spectra and thickness during treatments with OC solutions containing glucose in different concentrations. These time dependencies allowed for estimating the diffusion time and diffusion coefficient values of glucose and water in both types of tissues. The measured diffusion times for glucose in healthy and pathological mucosa samples were 299.2 ± 4.7 s and 320.6 ± 10.6 s for 40% and 35% glucose concentrations, respectively. Such a difference indicates a slower glucose diffusion in cancer tissues, which originate from their ability to trap far more glucose than healthy tissues. We have also found a higher free water content in cancerous tissue that is estimated as 64.4% instead of 59.4% for healthy mucosa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The contracts of commercial distribution are indispensable legal instruments to the development of the economic activity. The distribution, since the industrial revolution, acquired autonomy, given the necessity of specialized intermediation to distribute good and products. In this process, the structural organization of the distribution process suffered mutations, starting to assume a set of activities aiming at adjusting demand to supply, including, among others, clients canvassing, after-sales services, financing and assumption of risks, advisory services, promotion and advertising. The insufficiency of traditional contracts of purchase and sales and commission to satisfy the distributive needs caused by the industrial revolution will justify the development of new contractual schemes, such us agency contract, commercial concession and franchising. The obligation of the distributer to ensure the interests of the producer and to promote the distribution of the goods and services of the producer, in the context of a lasting relation of cooperation between the parts, through which the distributer is incorporated, with greater or minor intensity, in the producer distribution network, allowed us to sustain, as affirmed in the Portuguese and European literature, that distribution contracts could be framed in the same legal category. These contracts, as contracts that were shaped by praxis, do not have, with excepti on of agency contract, a legal framework in Portugal and Spain. It has been discussed in literature if agency contract legal framework can be applied, by analogy, to the contracts that fit in the legal category of distribution contracts. This paper aims at analyzing the legal framework of contracts of distribution in these legal systems, with the purpose to discuss the analogical application of the agency contract to these contracts. The undertaking, business, or part of an undertaking or business can be transferred to another person or corporation as a result of a merger or a legal transfer, transitory or definitive. As a consequence of the transfer, there is subrogation ex lege of the transferee in the rights and obligations arising from the employment relationship existing on the date of a transfer. This issue is of the utmost importance to accomplish the freedom of the employer negotiate the undertaking and the protection of employees' rights as well. The Portuguese legal framework has been shaped by Directive 77/187/ CEE and subsequently by Directive 2001/23/CE. In this paper, in order to assess the compliance of the legal framework concerning the enshrined in Labor Code with the Directive 2001/23 /CE, it will be performed a comparative analysis between both regulations, which will be coordinated with the case law from the Court of Justice and Portuguese Courts. We will conclude that, apart from some issues, the Portuguese labour law regarding the safeguarding of employees' rights in the event of the transfer of an undertaking complies with the Directive 2001/23 /CE and the case law from the Court of Justice. The specific phobia is characterized by a persistent and recurring fear that is excessive and irrational to a specific object or situation, triggering a strong anxiety reaction. Several studies have been conducted in order to assess the effectiveness of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and it has been proven to be a successful method for the treatment of specific phobias, anxiety, depression, trauma and somatic complaints. The case of this article describes the therapeutic work done with a forty-two years old' woman that has phobia to dentures using the intervention of EMDR. At the end of the intervention, the patient lost the fear of prosthetics, no longer revealing responses of anxiety and discomfort and remained stable during the follow-up one month after the intervention. These results had an impact on improving their quality of life, in terms of her personal, social and professional life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Orthognathic surgery is a type of orthodontic treatment recommended for patients with dentofacial deformities. This issue has grown in the scientific community and, more recently, in the field of psychological science since there is an increasing number of people resorting to this type of treatment and psychologists are being hired to meet emotional needs of such patients. This paper focuses on a review of the literature from the last nine years and seeks to determine if some of the psychosocial characteristics of the patient contribute to the effectiveness of orthodontic-surgical treatment. Our research identified 14 studies and the results are presented according to the following: (a) pre-surgical phase; (b) short-term and mid-term post-surgical phases; and (c) long-term post-surgical phase. We observed that some of the patient's characteristics and a closer patient-caregiver relationship seem to contribute to the satisfaction of the treatment. However, it is the quality of preventive psychological support towards risk factors that seems to determine the success of this orthodontic treatment. Overvaluation of expectations towards psychological benefits, insecurity in the decision making, lack of knowledge about the emotional costs of the surgery, lack of social support (or family pressure) as well as psychopathological disorders justify the need of psychological support. Finally, some positive and negative patient characteristics have been pointed out in this paper, and suggestions for future investigations have been made. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of the optical properties of biological tissues for a wide spectral range is necessary for the development and planning of noninvasive optical methods to be used in clinical practice. In this study, we propose a new method to calculate almost all optical properties of tissues as a function of wavelength directly from spectral measurements. Using this method, and with the exception of the reduced scattering coefficient, which was obtained by traditional simulation methods, all the other optical properties were calculated in a simple and fast manner for human and pathological colorectal tissues. The obtained results are in good agreement with previous published data, both in magnitude and in wavelength dependence. Since this method is based on spectral measurements and not on discrete-wavelength experimental data, the calculated optical properties contain spectral signatures that correspond to major tissue chromophores such as DNA and hemoglobin. Analysis of the absorption bands of hemoglobin in the wavelength dependence of the absorption spectra of normal and pathological colorectal mucosa allowed to identify differentiated accumulation of a pigment in these tissues. The increased content of this pigment in the pathological mucosa may be used for the future development of noninvasive diagnostic methods for colorectal cancer detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The optical immersion clearing technique has been successfully applied through the last 30 years in the visible to near infrared spectral range, and has proven to be a promising method to promote the application of optical technologies in clinical practice. To investigate its potential in the ultraviolet range, collimated transmittance spectra from 200 to 1000 nm were measured from colorectal muscle samples under treatment with glycerol‐water solutions. The treatments created two new optical windows with transmittance efficiency peaks at 230 and 300 nm, with magnitude increasing with glycerol concentration in the treating solution. Such discovery opens the opportunity to develop clinical procedures to perform diagnosis or treatments in the ultraviolet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A robust method is presented for evaluating the diffusion properties of chemicals in ex vivo biological tissues. Using this method that relies only on thickness and collimated transmittance measurements, the diffusion properties of glycerol, fructose, polypropylene glycol and water in muscle tissues were evaluated. Amongst other results, the diffusion coefficient of glycerol in colorectal muscle was estimated with a value of 3.3 × 10−7 cm2/s. Due to the robustness and simplicity of the method, it can be used in other fields of biomedical engineering, namely in organ cryoprotection and food industry. The determination of the diffusion properties of chemicals in biological materials has great interest in clinical practice, dermatology, pharmacology, cryogenics or in food industry. Using the optical clearing technique in muscle tissues, we present a simple and robust ex vivo method, based only on collimated transmittance and thickness measurements that allows the estimation of the diffusion time and diffusion coefficient of various agents. Abstract: Cat eye syndrome is a rare congenital disease characterized by the existence of a supernumerary chromosome derived from chromosome 22, with a variable phenotype comprising anal atresia, coloboma of the iris and preauricular tags or pits. We report a girl with cat eye syndrome, presenting short stature, with growth hormone deficiency due to posterior pituitary ectopia. Short stature is a common feature of this syndrome, and the association with a structural pituitary anomaly has been described, however growth hormone deficiency and the underlying mechanisms are rarely reported. With the objective of developing new methods to acquire diagnostic information, the reconstruction of the broadband absorption coefficient spectra (μ a [λ]) of healthy and chromophobe renal cell carcinoma kidney tissues was performed. By performing a weighted sum of the absorption spectra of proteins, DNA, oxygenated, and deoxygenated hemoglobin, lipids, water, melanin, and lipofuscin, it was possible to obtain a good match of the experimental μ a (λ) of both kidney conditions. The weights used in those reconstructions were estimated using the least squares method, and assuming a total water content of 77% in both kidney tissues, it was possible to calculate the concentrations of the other tissue components. It has been shown that with the development of cancer, the concentrations of proteins, DNA, oxygenated hemoglobin, lipids, and lipofuscin increase, and the concentration of melanin decreases.
