Engineered heterostructures formed by complex oxide materials are a rich source of emergent phenomena and technological applications. In the quest for new functionality, a vastly unexplored avenue is interfacing oxide perovskites with materials having dissimilar crystallochemical properties. Here, we propose a unique class of heterointerfaces based on nitride antiperovskite and oxide perovskite materials as a previously unidentified direction for materials design. We demonstrate the fabrication of atomically sharp interfaces between nitride antiperovskite Mn3GaN and oxide perovskites (La0.3Sr0.7)(Al0.65Ta0.35)O3 and SrTiO3. Using atomic-resolution imaging/spectroscopic techniques and first-principles calculations, we determine the atomic-scale structure, composition, and bonding at the interface. The epitaxial antiperovskite/perovskite heterointerface is mediated by a coherent interfacial monolayer that interpolates between the two antistructures. We anticipate our results to be an important step for the development of functional antiperovskite/perovskite heterostructures, combining their unique characteristics such as topological properties for ultralow-power applications.

Rare-earth pyrochlore iridates (RE2Ir2O7) consist of two interpenetrating cation sublattices, the RE with highly frustrated magnetic moments, and the iridium with extended conduction orbitals significantly mixed by spin-orbit interactions. The coexistence and coupling of these two sublattices create a landscape for discovery and manipulation of quantum phenomena such as the topological Hall effect, massless conduction bands, and quantum criticality. Thin films allow extended control of the material system via symmetry-lowering effects such as strain. While bulk Pr2Ir2O7 shows a spontaneous hysteretic Hall effect below 1.5 K, we observe the effect at elevated temperatures up to 15 K in epitaxial thin films on (111) yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates synthesized via solid-phase epitaxy. Similar to the bulk, the lack of observable long-range magnetic order in the thin films points to a topological origin. We use synchrotron-based element-specific x-ray diffraction and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism to compare powders and thin films to attribute the spontaneous Hall effect in the films to localization of the Ir moments. We link the thin-film Ir local moments to lattice distortions absent in the bulklike powders. We conclude that the elevated-Temperature spontaneous Hall effect is caused by the topological effect originating either from the Ir or Pr sublattice, with interaction strength enhanced by the Ir local moments. This spontaneous Hall effect with weak net moment highlights the effect of vanishingly small lattice distortions as a means to discover topological phenomena in metallic frustrated magnetic materials.

An agent's efforts of will have long been at the center of Robert Kane's influential account of libertarian free will. For several decades it has been a crucial part of his theory that there is a symmetry to these efforts. That is, Kane has long maintained that an agent engaged in an undetermined choice makes a simultaneous and sustained effort to choose and to choose otherwise. In a recent paper, Kane abandons this symmetry. I outline and evaluate this change in Kane's theory. I begin by explaining how Kane's theory has changed from a symmetric to an asymmetric account of undetermined free choices. I then explore the philosophical benefits of adopting an asymmetric account by considering its implications for the explanatory luck objection, the phenomenological objection, and the objection that engaging in dual efforts of will involves an unacceptable form of irrationality. Finally, I argue that despite these benefits, Kane's asymmetric model opens the door to a more pervasive worry about luck and it gives up something most libertarians want: the unconditional ability to choose otherwise. Given these points, I conclude the cost of abandoning the symmetric account of efforts of will is excessively high. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Commentators on P.F. Strawson's reactive attitudes emphasize the opposition between the participant and objective attitudes. This tendency overlooks Strawson's attempt to mitigate what he saw as "a crude opposition" between these two perspectives. Strawson called attention to phenomena involving the "half-suspension" of reactive attitudes, or the "straddling" of the objective and participant stances in order to diminish this crudity. This has been largely ignored in the literature, and as a result, the phenomena that Strawson mentions are poorly understood. Drawing on the work in the philosophy of emotion by Amélie Rorty and a multidimensional account of the reactive attitudes, we provide a framework to explain how such a half-suspension is possible and highlight some of its more prominent features. Michael K. Johnson's book, "Speculative Wests: Popular Representations of a Region and Genre," explores how the Western genre has evolved and transformed through hybrid forms and speculative work. Johnson examines how artists of color have used these new forms to challenge the centrality of whiteness in the Western and imagine alternative visions. The book focuses on works by African Americans, Indigenous people, and people of color, using a variety of texts and media to highlight the genre's ideological gaps and omissions. Johnson's analysis also considers the political context of the Trump presidency and recent social and cultural divisions. Ultimately, the book offers hope for a more inclusive and humane future for the Western genre. [Extracted from the article]

Uterine transplantation (UT) is an emerging medical treatment for women affected by absolute uterine factor infertility (AUFI). To date there have been over 90 documented cases of UT performed worldwide, with over 50 live births. UT allows women affected by AUFI the opportunity to carry and deliver a childd. The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) introduced a UT study in 2019; however, due to the impacts of the COVID pandemic the study was placed on hold for two years. In February 2023, RPAH performed the centre's first UT from a living unrelated donor to a 25‐year‐old woman with Mayer‐Rokitansky‐Küster‐Hauser syndrome. The donor and recipient surgeries were uncomplicated and both are recovering well in the early post‐operative period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Single‐crystalline inorganic semiconductor nanomembranes (NMs) have attracted great attention over the last decade, which poses great advantages to complex device integration. Applications in heterogeneous electronics and flexible electronics have been demonstrated with various semiconductor nanomembranes. Single‐crystalline aluminum nitride (AlN), as an ultrawide‐bandgap semiconductor with great potential in applications such as high‐power electronics has not been demonstrated in its NM forms. This very first report demonstrates the creation, transfer‐printing, and characteristics of the high‐quality single‐crystalline AlN NMs. This work successfully transfers the AlN NMs onto various foreign substrates. The crystalline quality of the NMs has been characterized by a broad range of techniques before and after the transfer‐printing and no degradation in crystal quality has been observed. Interestingly, a partial relaxation of the tensile stress has been observed when comparing the original as‐grown AlN epi and the transferred AlN NMs. In addition, the transferred AlN NMs exhibits the presence of piezoelectricity at the nanoscale, as confirmed by piezoelectric force microscopy. This work also comments on the advantages and the challenges of the approach. Potentially, the novel approach opens a viable path for the development of the AlN‐based heterogeneous integration and future novel electronics and optoelectronics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
