A uniaxial bianisotropic, full-dielectric structure has been designed and numerically studied. The material is based on a previously published 2D-honeycomb structure. A 3D expansion leads to an effective metamaterial showing a typical chiral electromagnetic behavior, i.e., a resonant electromagnetic activity with a small circular dichroism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the characteristics of layered structures (photonic or electromagnetic bandgaps), including chiral media, are studied by means of two different numerical methods, one in the time domain (finite differences in the time domain, FDTD) and the other in the frequency domain (coupled-mode method, CMM). The results (reflection and transmission coefficients for a plane wave normally incident over a layered structure) obtained by means of both well different techniques are practically identical. Schelkunoff's method, also commonly refered to as Coupled Mode Method (CMM), is a numerical method which gives the propagation constants and the electromagnetic field in a general homogeneous medium bounded by perfect electric walls. In this paper, we test Schelkunoff's method for a waveguide filled with an isotropic chiral material (chirowaveguide) where the dimensions of the walls are electrically large compared with the wavelength. It is reasonable to foresee that, in this case, the results given by Schelkunoff's method must approach to the corresponding ones for the chiral unbounded medium. Effectively, we obtain the solutions for both circular polarized waves (right-handed and left-handed) in free propagation in a single calculation. The coupled mode method (CMM) is a seminumerical method for studying electromagnetic propagation, originally formulated for closed structures. We show how this method can be used for obtaining the propagation constants and electromagnetic field in unbounded isotropic chiral media. We also characterize single and periodic cascade discontinuities made of isotropic chiral slabs by means of the mode matching method combined with the CMM. The results are tested with a robust FDTD technique, modified to model bi-isotropic media and with analytical solutions. In all cases good agreement is found. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A transmission-line matrix model suitable to model the propagation of electromagnetic (EM) waves in hi-isotropic media is presented. The main characteristic of the EM response of such complex media is the cross coupling of the EM field vectors in their constitutive relations. In this study, the angle tilt between electric and magnetic field vectors, the intrinsic impedances, the effective parameters of the medium, and the rotation of the polarization plane are computed. A transmission line matrix (TLM) model suitable to simulate the propagation of waves in moving anisotropic continuous media is presented. As is well known, an electromagnetic wave propagating in a general medium, moving with respect to its source, experiences a drag by the own medium, which involves a wave velocity dependent on the direction of propagation. In this work, we present a first approach for the case of uniform movement of an anisotropic dielectric medium with respect to an electromagnetic source. Although the technique allows for quantitative results, special attention is devoted to the simulation of wave fronts, distorted elliptical fronts, because a particular kind of ‘anisotropy’ appears, even in an isotropic medium. The TLM method, being a time domain method, cannot deal directly with frequency dispersive media. A way for modelling such media, for instance, dielectric dispersive ones, is proposed, starting from the causality relationship between field vectors D and E, which is discretized over the same space–time mesh as the three-dimensional TLM mesh (in our case, with HSCN node). This leads to adding, at each node on the network, three voltage sources (one for each field component), their value depending on the previous instants. The method is validated by computing the reflection (magnitude and phase) coefficient at normal incidence at an air–dielectric interface, for different dispersive behaviours of the dielectrics. In this paper, a novel TLM algorithm for electromagnetic wave propagation in chiral media is presented. One of the main characteristics of the electromagnetic response of such media is the rotation of the polarization plane.
