This paper upgrades and updates the checklist of the bird species recorded in Italy between 1800 and 2019. For the first time, it also includes subspecies. The classification, taxonomy and English names are based on «The Handbook of the Birds of the World & BirdLife International Checklist». The Italian list contains at present 551 species and 702 taxonomic units, including in the latter both the subspecies and the monotypic species. Each of them has been allocated to the AERC categories A, B or C according to four different frequency codes. Since the publication of the previous list (2009), 25 species have been added. The currently breeding avifauna includes 287 species: additional 10 species are regarded as nationally extinct breeders. Climatological intraseasonal oscillation (CISO), as phase-locking of transient intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) to the annual cycle, is an important seasonal evolution of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM). We identified six CISO centers related to the ASM onset: the wet CISO begins from the central-to-eastern equatorial Indian Ocean (CIO) around pentad 25, which propagates eastward to the western Pacific (WP) around pentad 26, northward to the Bay of Bengal (BoB) around pentad 28, northeastward to the South China Sea (SCS) around pentad 29, and then northward to East Asia (EA) around pentad 34, while the wet CISO over the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) region peaking around pentad 32 originates from the northwestern Indian Ocean. The CISO over the CIO at pentad 25 is related to the phase-locking of Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), caused by the seasonal jump of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) from the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern Hemisphere over the Indian Ocean, signaling the beginning of the ASM CISO. The multi-model ensemble mean (MME) of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models can well reproduce these strong CISOs over the ISM, BoB, SCS, and EA regions, although the simulated intensity is weaker and the peak wet phase is 2–3 pentads later than that in the observation. The very weak CISOs over the CIO and WP in the simulations challenge our subseasonal prediction of the ASM since its intraseasonal variability is usually forced by the tropical ISO. These CISOs would be significantly enhanced over the BoB and EA under the future global warming in a high emission scenario of the CMIP6 models, while the CISOs over the CIO and WP would be still absent. The pre-summer rainy season (PSRS; April–June) is the period of most frequent strong precipitation in South China (SC). Persistent strong precipitation events (PSPEs) can cause greater loss of life and property than short-lived strong precipitation. This paper investigates extended-range signals near the tropopause preceding two persistent positive climatological intraseasonal oscillations (PPCISOs) in precipitation corresponding to two climatological PSPEs in SC during the PSRS, using the CISO analysis of isentropic potential vorticity (IPV). It is found that precursor signals can be better seen in IPV CISOs than in unfiltered IPV. The first rainfall PPCISO is caused by an eastward propagation of high-IPV CISOs along the dynamical tropopause originating from the Arctic region and west of the Tibetan Plateau. The second is the most persistent (13 days). Its high-IPV CISOs originate over the Arctic region and the tropical monsoon region, respectively, 20 or more days prior to the rainfall CISO peak. The west of the Tibetan Plateau and the northern region of the East Asian westerly jet near the tropopause are two transit points where extratropical high-IPV CISOs strengthen and then change their propagation direction. The southward high-IPV CISOs and the northward positive IPV CISO caused by the monsoon begin to interact about 10 days prior to rainfall peak. Since then, the interaction leads a narrow meridional positive PV channel on the inclined 345 K isentropic surface. A specific CISO pattern, characterized by an elongated high-IPV CISO isolated by three negative IPV CISOs (the South Asian, the Okhotsk and the western Pacific subtropical highs), is responsible for the long duration of the second rainfall PPCISO. Tianshan Mountains are the headwater regions for the central Asia rivers, providing water resources for ecological protection and economic development in semiarid regions. Due to scarce observations, the hydroclimatic characteristics of the Tianshan Mountains Precipitation (TMP) measured over highland (>1500 m) regions remain to be revealed. Here, we show the TMP belongs to a monsoon-like climate regime, with a distinct annual range and a high ratio of summer-to-yearly rainfall, and exhibits six abrupt changes, dividing the annual cycle into six precipitation sub-seasons. Over the past 60 years, the yearly TMP has significantly increased by 17.3%, with a dramatic increase in winter (135.7%). The TMP displays a significant 40-day climatological intra-seasonal oscillation (CISO) in summer. The TMP CISO's wet phase results from the confrontation of the eastward propagating mid-tropospheric Balkhash Lake Low and the southward migrating Mongolian High. The sudden changes in the two climatological circulation systems trigger TMP's changes, shaping the 40-day CISO. Emerging scientific issues are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
