The increasing use of large glass surfaces in modern architecture requires robust adhesive solutions that balance aesthetic appeal with structural resilience, particularly in timber–glass applications. This study examines the influence of primer treatments on the shear performance of timber–glass adhesive joints, employing a combination of experimental testing and simulation techniques. Double-lap shear tests with epoxy adhesives assess the impact of various surface treatments on joint stiffness, shear stress distribution, and deformation. Additionally, a finite element model is developed to simulate joint behavior, evaluate failure modes, and analyze displacement patterns. Results indicate that primer applications notably enhance structural integrity by reducing displacement and increasing joint stability, thereby supporting more durable timber–glass assemblies. These findings offer valuable insights for advancing adhesive technologies in architectural components, enabling a closer alignment between structural performance and design innovation in timber–glass systems. On 14 June 2023, the European Parliament adopted Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 on machinery, which entered into force on 19 July 2023 (with some exceptions as per art. 54, according to a corrigendum issued to address a clerical error as regards the application dates in the original version) and shall apply from 20 January 2027, replacing the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. The main innovations/differences introduced by the Machinery Regulation (MR) compared to the Machinery Directive (MD) are critically analysed here, with a focus on sustainability issues. Some of these issues are covered by several international standards (such as BS 8887, ISO 10987 or DIN 91472), which also define the criteria and requirements for the remanufacturing process, although some technical gaps remain. Using the example of agricultural machinery, this paper proposes a methodology for determining the areas of acceptability for remanufactured products: these are expressed in terms of structural performance (e.g., the number of cycles ahead to failure expressed as the mutual of damage 1 − D = 0.625 ) and the functional and safety requirements of the original machine. In this way, the issue of "substantial modification of machinery" is explored in terms of the safety obligations that the remanufactured machinery must fulfil. The paper is therefore a contribution to circular design by providing general criteria for the extension of the service life of machinery while at the same time considering safety issues. By centring attention on the domains of technology readiness and the digital gap, the paper introduces a conceptual model grounded in the interpretative framework provided by Viable Systems Approach. This model serves to delineate key pillars for reflection and action, guiding the exploration of new pathways and processes aimed at amplifying citizens’ engagement in Smart City within Digital Era.

The paper explores the interpretative significance of relevance in the systemic qualification of “intelligence,” particularly in the context of Intelligence Augmentation (IA). Using the Viable System Approach (VSA) matrix, it delves into Informational Variety and Systemic Relevance to understand the incremental impact of AI in complex decision-making. The study reveals that, methodologically, the relevance of the viable system explains the synergistic collaboration between humans and machines, considering technology not just as an influential resource but also possessing structural criticality. “Intelligent” service systems, based on AI, transform into “wise” systems when components cooperate with technological resources. This interaction, rather than amplifying human capabilities, leads to cognitive enhancement, streamlining decision-making. The abstract emphasizes the incompleteness of current support systems, which focus solely on the quantitative aspect of information, suggesting that greater efficiency necessitates integrating human experiences, knowledge, and emotions. It underscores that the role of technology lies in how humans interact with it, and as technology becomes increasingly critical, algorithms will progressively shape AI decision-making processes. Molecular techniques for studying soil microorganisms allow to quantify the presence of specific functional groups from the total soil DNA and thus to assess their dynamic in response to the land use. Using this approach, a study was carried out to assess the increase the soil organic carbon (C) of arable land in the central Po Valley with three woody species (white willow, black locust, hybrid poplar) in short rotation forestry. Being fungi the most involved microorganisms in the C-cycle and representing the larger part of microbial biomass in volume, total fungi e the two most widespread main fungal degraders in the upper soil layer (Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes) were used as indicators of the effectiveness of land use in increasing soil organic C. An innovative molecular technique (SYBR® Green I dye on the QuantStudio™ 3D digital PCR system) which allows to overcome the critical issues associated with the relatively low concentration of fungal DNA compared to that of bacteria was used. Compared to the ploughed soil, total organic carbon (TOC), microbial biomass and enzyme activities increased significantly in the woody plantations. However, TOC increased to different degrees among the woody species. White willow and black locust showed a greater increase in soil TOC than arable (+30 and 20% respectively), followed by hybrid poplar with a smaller increase of +12%. The increases in soil TOC in the three plantations were not correlated with the total woody mass, assessed 15 years after abandonment. Total fungi and Ascomycetes were highly correlated with microbial biomass and TOC, while Basidiomycetes were not. Ascomycetes, which commonly prevail in agricultural soils, were still the most abundant even after a short rotation forest cycle of 15 years and can be taken as good indicator of C sequestration activities into the soil. Soil tillage strongly reduced the content of Basidiomycetes and short rotation forestry managed to increase it at least 4-5 times over a 15-year cycle of short rotation forestry, suggesting that it can act as a qualitative indicator of C sequestration. Since Basidiomycetes have different biological and morphological characteristics than Ascomycetes, combining them (i.e., as Ascomicetes:Basidiomycetes ratio) seems to be a good option for choosing the most suitable woody species for carbon accumulation in agricultural soils. This paper provides an overview of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), a new emerging concept in climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. It introduces a typology of NBS, from minimal intervention to the highest degree of engineering, and provides examples of each. It also provides an overview of the ‘Life Metro Adapt’ project, which focused on the climate problems of the Milan Metropolitan City and supported the development of climate change adaptation strategies through alternative, nature-based solutions. Finally, the paper stresses the need for increased awareness of environmental issues, in order to ensure that NBS become ‘commonplace’ today and can be perfected in the future.

Smart Cities can be considered as one of the most challenging topics within the last decades. Overcoming the well analysed debate about the digital devices and infrastructures needed for supporting the emergence and viability of Smart Cities, the paper aims at investigating how citizens’ engagement in Smart Cities can be used for promoting positive attitudes and behaviours towards Cities Circular Economy (CCE). Building upon a managerial perspective the paper aims at depicting preliminary conceptual reflections about antecedents and conditions able to influence citizens’ engagement in Smart Cities functioning. The paper proposes a Knowledge Management based framework for supporting both policy makers and managers in better understanding on which levels to act for ensuring a participative approach to the definition of a Circular Economy Logic in Smart Cities ecosystems.

Simple Summary: Prostate cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer in men. Focal laser ablation has been proposed as an alternative to radical treatments in carefully selected patients in order to achieve long-term cancer control and reduce the morbidity associated with surgery and radiation therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the oncological and functional outcomes of transperineal laser ablation (TPLA) as the focal therapy for localized prostate cancer. We assessed that TPLA is a safe, painless, and effective technique with good oncological results and the preservation of continence and sexual outcomes. Introduction and objectives: To evaluate the oncological and functional outcomes of transperineal laser ablation (TPLA) as the focal therapy for localized prostate cancer (PCa) after a 12-month follow-up. Materials and methods: Patients with low- and intermediate-risk localized PCa were prospectively treated with focal TPLA between July 2021 and December 2022. The inclusion criteria were the following: clinical stage < T2b; PSA < 20 ng/mL; International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) grade ≤ 2; MRI-fusion biopsy-confirmed lesion classified as PI-RADS v2.1 ≥ 3. Intra-, peri-, and post-operative data were collected. Variables including age, PSA, prostate volume (PVol), Charlson's Comorbidity Index (CCI), International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) with QoL score, International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5), International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire—Short Form (ICIQ-SF), and Male Sexual Health Questionnaire—Ejaculatory Dysfunction Short Form (MSHQ-EjD) were collected at baseline and at 3, 6 and 12 months after TPLA. Post-operative mpMRI was performed at 3 and 12 months. Finally, all patients underwent prostatic re-biopsy under fusion guidance at 12 months. The success of this technique was defined as no recurrence in the target treated lesion at the 12-month follow up. Results: Twenty-four patients underwent focal TPLA. Baseline features were age [median 67 years (IQR 12)], PSA [5.7 ng/mL (3.9)], PVol [49 mL (27)], CCI [0 (0)], IPSS [11 (9)], IPSS-QoL [2 (2)], IIEF-5 [21 (6)], ICIQ-SF [0 (7)], MSHQ-EjD ejaculation domain [14 (4)] and bother score [0 (2)]. Median operative time was 34 min (IQR 12). Median visual analogue scale (VAS) 6 h after TPLA was 0 (IQR 1). The post-operative course was regular for all patients, who were discharged on the second post-operative day and underwent catheter removal on the seventh post-operative day. No patient had incontinence at catheter removal. A significant reduction in PSA (p = 0.01) and an improvement in IPSS (p = 0.009), IPSS-QoL (p = 0.02) and ICIQ-SF scores (p = 0.04) compared to baseline were observed at the 3-month follow-up. Erectile and ejaculatory functions did not show any significant variation during the follow-up. No intra- and peri-operative complications were recorded. Three Clavien–Dindo post-operative complications were recorded (12%): grade 1 (two cases of urinary retention) and grade 2 (one case of urinary tract infection). At the 12-month follow-up, eight patients showed mpMRI images referable to suspicious recurrent disease (PIRADS v2.1 ≥ 3). After re-biopsy, 7/24 patients' (29%) results were histologically confirmed as PCa, 3 of which were recurrences in the treated lesion (12.5%). The success rate was 87.5%. Conclusions: The focal TPLA oncological and functional results seemed to be encouraging. TPLA is a safe, painless, and effective technique with a good preservation of continence and sexual outcomes.
