7. Electroluminescence hyperspectral imaging of light-emitting diodes using a liquid crystal tunable filter.

Abstract

We demonstrate the use of a low-cost liquid-crystal-based wavelength-tunable filter and CMOS video camera to add hyperspectral imaging capabilities to a probe station equipped with a simple optical microscope. The resultant setup is used to rapidly resolve the spectral and spatial variations in electroluminescence typically observed for InxGa1−xN/GaN light-emitting diodes. Applying standard statistical analyses of variation within the multivariate datasets, such as moments and principal components, we observe inhomogeneities on a spectral scale significantly smaller than the bandwidth of the tunable filter. The resultant tool offers an alternative to scanning beam luminescence techniques for high-throughput hyperspectral analysis of optoelectronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

9. Correlation between Circulating Fungal Biomarkers and Clinical Outcome in Invasive Aspergillosis.

Abstract

Objective means are needed to predict and assess clinical response in patients treated for invasive aspergillosis (IA). We examined whether early changes in serum galactomannan (GM) and/or β-D-glucan (BDG) can predict clinical outcomes. Patients with proven or probable IA were prospectively enrolled, and serial GM and BDG levels and GM optical density indices (GMI) were calculated twice weekly for 6 weeks following initiation of standard-of-care antifungal therapy. Changes in these biomarkers during the first 2 and 6 weeks of treatment were analyzed for associations with clinical response and survival at weeks 6 and 12. Among 47 patients with IA, 53.2% (25/47) and 65.9% (27/41) had clinical response by weeks 6 and 12, respectively. Changes in biomarkers during the first 2 weeks were associated with clinical response at 6 weeks (GMI, P = 0.03) and 12 weeks (GM+BDG composite, P = 0.05; GM, P = 0.04; GMI, P = 0.02). Changes in biomarkers during the first 6 weeks were also associated with clinical response at 6 weeks (GM, P = 0.05; GMI, P = 0.03) and 12 weeks (BDG+GM, P = 0.02; GM, P = 0.02; GMI, P = 0.01). Overall survival rates at 6 weeks and 12 weeks were 87.2% (41/47) and 79.1% (34/43), respectively. Decreasing biomarkers in the first 2 weeks were associated with survival at 6 weeks (BDG+GM, P = 0.03; BDG, P = 0.01; GM, P = 0.03) and at 12 weeks (BDG+GM, P = 0.01; BDG, P = 0.03; GM, P = 0.01; GMI, P = 0.007). Similar correlations occurred for biomarkers measured over 6 weeks. Patients with negative baseline GMI and/or persistently negative GMI during the first 2 weeks were more likely to have CR and survival. These results suggest that changes of biomarkers may be informative to predict and/or assess response to therapy and survival in patients treated for IA.

Abstract

During the epitaxy of AlGaN on sapphire for deep UV emitters, significant lattice mismatch leads to highly strained heterojunctions and the formation of threading dislocations. Combining cathodoluminescence, electron beam induced current and x-ray microanalysis reveal that dislocations with a screw component permeate through a state-of-the-art UVC LED heterostructure into the active region and perturb their local environment in each layer as growth progresses. In addition to acting as non-radiative recombination centers, these dislocations encourage high point defect densities and three-dimensional growth within their vicinity. We find that these point defects can add parasitic recombination pathways and compensate intentional dopants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The production of R-1,2-propanediol (PD) in Escherichia coli strains having the glycerol dehydrogenase genes have been investigated. The study seeks to discover new fermentation routes for 1,2-PD, an important chemical derived from propylene, from renewable sources. It will also be demonstrated that E. coli overexpressing the methylglyoxal synthase gene produces 1,2-PD. Results reveal that expressing glycerol dehydrogenase or methylglyoxal synthase in E. coli result in the production of 0.25 g of 1,2-PD per liter.

Abstract

Methylglyoxal is an [Alpha]-ketoaldehyde and dicarbonyl formed in cells as a side product of normal metabolism. Endogenously produced dicarbonyls, such as methylglyoxal, are involved in numerous pathogenic processes in vivo, including carcinogenesis and advanced glycation end-product formation: advanced glycation end-products are contributors to the pathophysiology of aging and chronic diabetes. Despite recent advances in understanding of the systemic effects of methylglyoxal, the full significance of this compound remains unknown. Herein we provide evidence that the majority of the methylglyoxal present in vivo is bound to biological ligands. The basis for our finding is an experimental approach that provides a measure of the bound methylglyoxal present in living systems, in this instance Chinese hamster ovary cells; with our approach, as much as 310 [[micro]Molar] methylglyoxal was detected, 100- to 1,000-fold more than observed previously in biological systems. Several artifacts were considered before concluding that the methylglyoxal was associated with cellular structures, including phosphate elimination from triose phosphates, carbohydrate degradation under the assay conditions, and interference from the derivatizing agent used as part of the assay procedure. A major source of the recovered methylglyoxal is most probably modified cellular proteins. With methylglyoxal at about 300 [[micro]Molar], 0.02% of cellular amino acid residues could be modified. As few as one or two 'hits' with methylglyoxal per protein molecule have previously been reported to be sufficient to cause protein endocytosis and subsequent degradation. Thus, 5-10% of cellular proteins may be modified to physiologically significant levels.

Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the characterization of the genes and enzymes responsible for the conversion of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol (PD) operon. Enhancement of the utility of the 1,3-PD genes was analyzed through their rearrangement into a form that would be adaptable to expression in different hosts under any desired regulation. The study revealed that the 1,3-PD operon was designed so that it can be readily altered for expression in other prokaryotic hosts and is therefore helpful in metabolic engineering of 1,3-PD pathways from glycerol and other substrates.

39. Novel custom made composite spacer for first-stage revision total hip replacement in the presence of extensive acetabular/femoral bone loss with abductor deficiency.

Abstract

A two-stage revision total hip replacement (THR) remains the gold standard for treating chronic periprosthetic joint infection. The goals for the first stage are twofold: (1) remove infected tissue/implants, obtaining tissue samples for culture; (2) deliver local antibiotics and maintain hip function with a prosthesis with antibiotic-loaded acrylic cement. With extensive bone loss prefabricated spacers are not sufficient, therefore customised spacers are required. The current technique, coating cephalomedually femoral nail in cement, is complex, time consuming, functions poorly and causes wear debris from excessive friction at the femoral/acetabular articulation. We report a technique to create a custom made composite spacer using a short femoral nail, standard Exeter femoral stem (Stryker), Trident acetabular cup (Stryker) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement with antibiotics. This technique restores hip biomechanics and gives a stable articulation, even in the presence of abductor deficiency, due to dual mobility bearings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Collinear molecular beam photodepletion was used to obtain particle specific electronic absorption information for Na3, Na4, and Na8 in a wavelength range from 370–835 nm. We critically discuss the experimental method used and the deconvolution procedure applied to the resulting data to yield absolute absorption cross sections. The spectra contain much information on the cluster-size–dependent transition from molecular to bulk-like optical response and are interpreted in terms of various computational approaches ranging from classical electrostatic to ab initio large scale configuration interaction.
