Modern tropical rainforests (TRFs) are one of the most ecologically important and species-rich biomes on the planet. However, the origin of modern TRFs is still debated, especially due to the incongruence between the fossil record and molecular data. Here, we test whether Campanian assemblages from northeastern Africa could represent fossil TRF vegetation. In so doing, we compare the investigated assemblages with other assemblages known to represent temperate forests, subtropical forests, and TRF in terms of leaf physiognomy, species richness, and taxonomic composition. We conclude based on fossil leaves that modern-looking TRFs already existed since 80 Ma during the Campanian in northeastern Africa in an area corresponding to 10 % of the modern Amazonian or 25 % of the Congolese TRF. The apparent conflict between the fossil record and phylogenetic evidence is due to the nearly complete absence of published tropical floras for the Cretaceous.

Our aim is to evaluate the influence of climate and latitude on the rise to dominance of angiosperms in space and time during the Cretaceous. The main objectives of the study are: 1) to determine whether a relationship existed between plant biogeographical distribution and Cretaceous climate changes; 2) to explore latitude-dependent forcing on early angiosperm ecology; 3) to propose a mechanism explaining the observed stages of radiation in early angiosperms. The study focuses on 18 Cretaceous megafossil localities and reviews on microfossils in the Northern Hemisphere. A database has been compiled using literature and personal unpublished data. The data document occurrences of micro- and megafossil plant remains including spores, pollen grains, leaves and whole plants. They are placed in context through the use of Cretaceous geographical maps and temperature curves or values. There is a clear correlation between latitude and the composition of Cretaceous floras. Latitudinal vegetation belts fluctuated in concert with climate changes during the Cretaceous. Differences in original plant associations may have driven the gradual plant turnover that resulted in the rise to dominance of early angiosperms during the Cretaceous. Cretaceous climate changes created dispersal bottlenecks. Bottlenecks induced the extinction of some plant groups and the radiation of others. Those that successfully radiated continued to spread.

We used the neutral red test, MTT assay and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release to compare the potential cytotoxicity of six surfactants belonging to different classes—three non-ionic surfactants (Triton ×100, octylphenoxypolyethoxy alcohol, from Orion; Tween 60, polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monostearate, from ICI Speciality Chemicals; Tween 80, polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monolaurate, from Labosi), two anionic surfactants (Texapon K1298, sodium lauryl sulphate, from Henkel; Texapon N40, sodium laurylether sulphate, from Henkel) and one cationic surfactant (benzethonium chloride, from Siber Hegner)—on human fibroblast cultures. According to the LC50 (μg ml-1), the tested surfactants can be classified in the following order of increasing cytotoxicity: Tween 80 < Texapon N40 < Tween 60 < Texapon K1298 < Triton ×100 < benzethonium chloride. Background and Aims At the beginning of the Late Cretaceous, angiosperms already inhabited all the environments and overtopped previously gymnosperm-dominated floras, especially in disturbed freshwater-related environments. The aim of this paper is to define what fossil plant ecology occurred during the early Cretaceous in order to follow the early spread of angiosperm taxa. Methods Floristic lists and localities from the Barremian to the Albian of Europe are analysed with the Wagners Parsimony Method. Key results The Wagners Parsimony Method indicates that (a) during the Barremian, matoniaceous ferns formed a savannah-like vegetation, while angiosperms composed freshwater aquatic vegetation; (b) during the Late Aptian humid phase, conifers increased, while matoniaceous ferns decreased, reflecting the closure of the vegetation; and (c) from the Albian, warmer and drier conditions induced the recovery of the matoniaceous ferns, while core angiosperms first developed in floodplains. Conclusions During the late Early Cretaceous (Barremian–Albian), angiosperms showed a stepwise widening of their ecological range, being recorded first during the Barremian as aquatic plant mega-remains and at the Cenomanian onwards occurred in all the environments. Dating back to the late Early Cretaceous, the macrofossil record of the iconic lotus family (Nelumbonaceae) is one of the oldest of flowering plants and suggests that their unmistakable leaves and nutlets embedded in large pitted receptacular fruits evolved relatively little in the 100 million years since their first known appearance. Here we describe a new fossil from the late Barremian/Aptian Crato Formation flora (NE Brazil) with both vegetative and reproductive structures, Notocyamus hydrophobus gen. nov. et sp. nov., which is now the oldest and most complete fossil record of Nelumbonaceae. In addition, it displays a unique mosaic of ancestral and derived macro- and micromorphological traits that has never been documented before in this family. This new Brazilian fossil-species also provides a rare illustration of the potential morphological and anatomical transitions experienced by Nelumbonaceae prior to a long period of relative stasis. Its potential plesiomorphic and apomorphic features shared with Proteaceae and Platanaceae not only fill a major morphological gap within Proteales but also provide new support for their unexpected relationships first suggested by molecular phylogenies., (© 2023. Changes in terrestrial vegetation during the mid-Cretaceous and their link to climate and environmental change are poorly understood. In this study, we use plant macrofossils and analysis of fossil pollen and spores from the Western Desert, Egypt, to assess temporal changes in plant communities during the Cenomanian. The investigated strata have relatively diverse sporomorph assemblages, which reflect the nature of parent vegetation. Specifically, the palynofloras represent ferns, conifers, monosulcate pollen producers, Gnetales, and a diverse group of angiosperms. Comparisons of both, dispersed palynoflora and plant macrofossils reveal different characteristics of the palaeoflora owing to a plethora of taphonomical and ecological biases including the depositional environment, production levels, and discrepancies between different plant organs. A combination of detailed records of sporomorphs, leaves, and charcoal from the studied successions provide new understandings of the palaeoclimate and palaeogeography during the Cenomanian and Albian-Cenomanian transition in Egypt. The mixed composition of the palynofloral assemblages reflects the presence of different depositional situations with a weak marine influence, as evidenced by a minor dinoflagellate cysts component. The local vegetation comprised various categories including herbaceous groups including ferns and eudicots, fluvial, open environments, and xeric arboreal communities dominated by Cheirolepidiaceae and perhaps including drought- and/or salt-tolerating ferns (Anemiaceae) and other gymnosperms (Araucariaceae, Ginkgoales, Cycadales, and Gnetales) as well as angiosperms. The presence of riparian and freshwater wetland communities favouring aquatic and/or hygrophilous ferns (of Salviniaceae and Marsileaceae), is noted. The wide variation of depositional settings derived from the palynological data may be attributed to a prevalent occurrence of producers in local vegetation during the early Cenomanian of Egypt. Early Cretaceous floras containing angiosperms were described from several geographic areas, nearly from the Arctic to the Antarctic, and are crucial to understand their evolution and radiation. However, most of these records come from northern mid-latitudes whereas those of lower paleolatitude areas, such as the Crato Fossil Lagerstätte in NE Brazil, are less studied. Here, we describe from this region of northern Gondwanan origin, two fossil-species of eudicots belonging to a new extinct genus Santaniella gen. nov. Together with several vegetative axes and leaves, anatomically well-preserved fruits with seeds and persistent perianth-like organs allowed us to reconstruct its potential affinities with ranunculids, and presumably Ranunculaceae. Previous records putatively assigned to Ranunculales are all from mid-latitudes, and their first unequivocal occurrence in a low-latitude area supports further the hypothesis of a widespread radiation of the earliest diverging eudicot lineage by this early age., (© 2022. The aim of the present study was to compare patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease (AD) or semantic dementia (SD) on their cognitive processes and the severity of their daily life activity impairments. Three types of tasks were administered to patients (SD = 15; AD = 31) and 30 healthy controls (HC): 1) informant-based scales and questionnaires, 2) a neuropsychological assessment exploring executive functions, episodic and semantic memory, and 3) a new original test featuring multi-step naturalistic actions and multitasking: the Sequential Daily Life Multitasking (SDLM). We predicted that patients with AD would mainly exhibit task perplexity, associated with episodic and executive deficits on the SDLM, while the behavior of patients with SD would mostly be characterized by object perplexity, associated with semantic memory deficits. Results showed that patients with AD or SD were impaired across all neuropsychological tests, particularly episodic memory in AD and semantic memory in SD. General performance on the SDLM also appeared dramatically impaired in both patient groups, and correlated with results of questionnaires about instrumental activities and memory impairments. However, specific qualitative measurements on the SDLM did not allow us to pinpoint different patterns of errors and behavior in patients with AD versus SD. We suggest that the inability of patients in both groups to perform the SDLM may derive from a constellation of disorders or else from more subtle impairment of cognitive and conative processes that requires further exploration., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All the major clades of angiosperms have a fossil record that extends back to more than 100 million years ago (Early Cretaceous), mostly in agreement with molecular dating. However, the Early Cretaceous record of monocots is very poor compared to other angiosperms. Their herbaceous nature has been invoked to explain this rarity, but biogeography could also be an explanation. Unfortunately, most of the Early Cretaceous angiosperm record comes from northern mid-latitudes. The Crato plattenkalk limestone offers a unique window into the Early Cretaceous vegetation of the tropics and has already yielded monocot fossils. Here, we describe a whole monocotyledonous plant from root to reproductive organs that is anatomically preserved. The good preservation of the fossils allowed the evaluation of reproductive, vegetative and anatomical characteristics of monocots, leading to a robust identification of this fossil as a crown monocot. Its occurrence in Northern Gondwana supports the possibility of an early radiation of monocots in the tropics.

The early diversification of angiosperms in diverse ecological niches is poorly understood. Some have proposed an origin in a darkened forest habitat and others an open aquatic or near aquatic habitat. The research presented here centers on Montsechia vidalii, first recovered from lithographic limestone deposits in the Pyrenees of Spain more than 100 y ago. This fossil material has been poorly understood and misinterpreted in the past. Now, based upon the study of more than 1,000 carefully prepared specimens, a detailed analysis of Montsechia is presented. The morphology and anatomy of the plant, including aspects of its reproduction, suggest that Montsechia is sister to Ceratophyllum (whenever cladistic analyses are made with or without a backbone). Montsechia was an aquatic angiosperm living and reproducing below the surface of the water, similar to Ceratophyllum. Montsechia is Barremian in age, raising questions about the very early divergence of the Ceratophyllum clade compared with its position as sister to eudicots in many cladistic analyses. Lower Cretaceous aquatic angiosperms, such as Archaefructus and Montsechia, open the possibility that aquatic plants were locally common at a very early stage of angiosperm evolution and that aquatic habitats may have played a major role in the diversification of some early angiosperm lineages.

The majority of environments are dominated by flowering plants today, but it is uncertain how this dominance originated. This increase in angiosperm diversity happened during the Cretaceous period (ca. 145-65 Ma) and led to replacement and often extinction of gymnosperms and ferns. We propose a scenario for the rise to dominance of the angiosperms from the Barremian (ca. 130 Ma) to the Campanian (ca. 84 Ma) based on the European megafossil plant record. These megafossil data demonstrate that angiosperms migrated into new environments in three phases: (i) Barremian (ca. 130-125 Ma) freshwater lake-related wetlands; (ii) Aptian-Albian (ca. 125-100 Ma) understory floodplains (excluding levees and back swamps); and (iii) Cenomanian-Campanian (ca. 100-84 Ma) natural levees, back swamps, and coastal swamps. This scenario allows for the measured evolution of angiosperms in time and space synthesizing changes in the physical environment with concomitant changes in the biological environment. This view of angiosperm radiation in three phases reconciles previous scenarios based on the North American record. The Cretaceous plant record that can be observed in Europe is exceptional in many ways. (i) Angiosperms are well preserved from the Barremian to the Maastrichtian (ca. 65 Ma). (ii) Deposits are well constrained and dated stratigraphically. (iii) They encompass a full range of environments. (iv) European paleobotany provides many detailed studies of Cretaceous floras for analysis. These factors make a robust dataset for the study of angiosperm evolution from the Barremian to the Campanian that can be traced through various ecosystems and related to other plant groups occupying the same niches.

The flowering plants that dominate modern vegetation possess leaf gas exchange potentials that far exceed those of all other living or extinct plants. The great divide in maximal ability to exchange CO(2) for water between leaves of nonangiosperms and angiosperms forms the mechanistic foundation for speculation about how angiosperms drove sweeping ecological and biogeochemical change during the Cretaceous. However, there is no empirical evidence that angiosperms evolved highly photosynthetically active leaves during the Cretaceous. Using vein density (D(V)) measurements of fossil angiosperm leaves, we show that the leaf hydraulic capacities of angiosperms escalated several-fold during the Cretaceous. During the first 30 million years of angiosperm leaf evolution, angiosperm leaves exhibited uniformly low vein D(V) that overlapped the D(V) range of dominant Early Cretaceous ferns and gymnosperms. Fossil angiosperm vein densities reveal a subsequent biphasic increase in D(V). During the first mid-Cretaceous surge, angiosperm D(V) first surpassed the upper bound of D(V) limits for nonangiosperms. However, the upper limits of D(V) typical of modern megathermal rainforest trees first appear during a second wave of increased D(V) during the Cretaceous-Tertiary transition. Thus, our findings provide fossil evidence for the hypothesis that significant ecosystem change brought about by angiosperms lagged behind the Early Cretaceous taxonomic diversification of angiosperms.

We have examined the extreme longevity displayed by trees in relation to a theory mainly developed in animals, namely, the controversial rate of living (ROL) theory of aging which proposes that longevity is negatively correlated to metabolic rate. Plant metabolism implies respiration and photosynthesis; both are susceptible to negatively impact longevity. The relationship between longevity and metabolism was studied in leaves and stems of several species with the aim of challenging the ROL theory in trees. Leaf and stem life spans were found to be highly correlated to metabolism (R(2) = 0.97), and stems displayed a much lower metabolism than leaves. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), with metabolism as the covariate, revealed no difference between mean leaf and stem life spans, which would appear to conform to the expectations of the ROL theory. Consequently, the extremely high longevity of trees may be explained by the lower metabolism displayed by the stems. These results clearly reflect different energy allocation and energy expenditure rate strategies between leaves and stems, which may result in different senescence rates (and life spans) in these organs. They also suggest that, in contrast to animals, the ROL theory of aging may apply to woody plants at the organ level, thereby opening a promising new line of research to guide future studies on plant senescence.

Background and Aims: The mid-Cretaceous is a period of sudden turnover from gymnosperm to angiosperm-dominated floras. The aim was to investigate the fossil plant ecology in order to follow the spread of angiosperm taxa., Methods: Floristic lists and localities from the latest Albian-Cenomanian of Europe are analysed with Wagner's Parsimony Method, a clustering method currently used in phylogeny (cladistics)., Key Results: Wagner's Parsimony Method points out that (a) gymnosperms dominated brackish water-related environments while angiosperms dominated freshwater-related environments (e.g. swamps, floodplains, levees, channels), (b) angiosperms showed the highest diversity in stable, freshwater-related environments, (c) a single angiosperm, 'Diospyros' cretacea, is restricted to brackish water-related environments and (d) the families Lauraceae and Platanaceae were exclusive to disturbed, braided river environments, implying a opportunist strategy for early tree angiosperms., Conclusions: During the Mid-Cretaceous, European floras were characterized by (a) coastal gymnosperms, (b) highly diversified fluvial angiosperms and (c) the first European brackish water-related angiosperm.

Varicose vein repair often necessitates a distal approach to the great saphenous vein (GSV). The classic method involves a medial pre-malleolar approach. We propose a more distal approach via the medial surface of the foot where there is a cutaneous landmark, which can be used to locate the GSV in a simple, reliable and reproducible fashion. In 20 cadaveric feet, we dissected out the GSV exploiting the above-mentioned cutaneous landmark. We then extended the dissection up as far as the medial pre-malleolar region (from where the GSV is classically approached) in order to be able to compare the diameter of the vein at the two different points (in the foot and in the pre-malleolar region). We also compared the cutaneous landmark with ultrasonographic location of the GSV in 22 feet of healthy subjects. Both dissections and ultrasound examinations demonstrated the reliability of the cutaneous landmark. Moreover, no significant difference was detected in the diameter of the GSV at the two different approach points. This original distal approach to the GSV requires only minor modifications of current practice for varicose veins surgical treatment.

Photodegradation of 2.6 x 10(-5) M aqueous solutions of sodium usnate at various pH was studied. Photodegradation appeared to follow first-order kinetics and was found to be pH dependent. The degradation rate constant was calculated to be 9.20 x 10(-4) min-1, 5.93 x 10(-4) min-1, 9.69 x 10(-4) min-1, and 9.88 x 10(-4) min-1 at pH 6, pH 7, pH 8, and pH 9, respectively.

We compared thermostability of various natural (sulfoprolamine and sodium usnate) or synthetic (climbazol and piroctone olamine) antidandruff agents in aqueous diluted solution at pH around 7. Thermodegradation of these solutions was studied by an isothermal method in thermostatically controlled ovens, at three temperatures (50, 70 and 90 degrees C). For each molecule, we determined at 20 degrees C t90% (time necessary to obtain a decrease of 10% of the initial concentration, value which shows the stability of the product). The present study shows that piroctone olamine is the most stable antidandruff agent among those studied.

Sunscreen agents are commonly used in cosmetic products to filter out noxious radiation in sunlight. A convenient high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method for the quantification of five sunscreens after irradiation has been selected. We used this analytical method to compare the photostability of benzophenone-3, PEG-25 PABA, octyl dimethyl PABA, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor and butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, at levels in the range of 25-60 microM. The assay was carried out, using a C8 column with a methanol--water mobile phase. The detector was set at a wavelength of 300 nm. The assay was linear with the following limits: 0.2 microgram ml-1 for benzophenone-3, 1 microgram ml-1 for PEG-25 PABA, 0.15 microgram ml-1 for octyl dimethyl PABA, 0.1 microgram ml-1 for methylbenzylidene camphor and 0.05 microgram ml-1 for butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane. The half-lives calculated indicate a very good photostability of the sunscreens studied and permit to classify amongst themselves.

The target of this research was to determine the cytotoxicity of sodium laurylsulfate on single-layer cultures of human fibroblasts, using two colorimetric methods (neutral red and MTT tests) and the evaluation of the pyruvic acid consumption by the cells. For the determination of the cytotoxicity by colorimetric tests, we have determined the absorbance at 540 nm using a spectrophotometer. Pyruvic acid, present in the culture medium, is the mitochondria's C3 energetic metabolite. So, a measure of the cell's consumption of pyruvic acid was developed. The reaction is as follows: Pyruvic acid + NADH --> Lactic acid + NAD+ and the enzyme employed is the LDH (lactate dehydrogenase). This method can be used to measure cytotoxicity, proliferation, and the cell's activation. The method is rapid, precise, and lacks any toxic byproduct. The absorbance was measured using a spectrophotometer at 340 nm. The consumption of pyruvic acid follows upon the fibroblast's growth. Sodium laurylsulfate cytotoxicity test after 24 h shows that the NR colorimetric test and the pyruvic acid consumption are correctly correlated (r = 0.91, alpha = 0.05). This dosage can be used to study the barrier properties of the corneocyte layer without destroying the artificial skin.

Ultraviolet spectrophotometry can help determined the quantity of paracetamol and acesulfam-K when mixed. The isosbestic wavelength (lambda iso) and the absorbency at the wavelength (Aiso) determined with equimolecular solutions or by annulation of the first derivative at 226 nm for paracetamol determination and at 242.5 nm for acesulfam-K determination can be used.
