Abstract Axions, originally proposed to solve the strong CP problem of quantum chromodynamics, emerge now as leading candidates of WISP dark matter. The rich phenomenology associated to the light and stable QCD axion can be described as an effective magnetic field that can be experimentally investigated. For the QUAX experiment, dark matter axions are searched by means of their resonant interactions with electronic spins in a magnetized sample. In principle, axion-induced magnetization changes can be detected by embedding a sample in an rf cavity in a static magnetic field. In this work we describe the operation of a prototype ferromagnetic haloscope, with a sensitivity limited by thermal fluctuations and receiver noise. With a preliminary dark matter search, we are able to set an upper limit on the coupling constant of DFSZ axions to electrons $$g_{aee}

We present a more stringent upper limit on long-range axion-mediated forces obtained by the QUAX-gpgs experiment, located at the INFN – Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. By measuring variations of a paramagnetic GSO crystal magnetization with a dc-SQUID magnetometer we investigate the possible coupling between electron spins and unpolarized nucleons in lead disks. The induced magnetization can be interpreted as the effect of a long-range spin dependent interaction mediated by axions or Axion Like Particles (ALPs). The corresponding coupling strength is proportional to the CP violating term gpegsN, i.e. the product of the pseudoscalar and scalar coupling constants of electron and nucleon, respectively. We report the analysis of paired photon pulses arising from two cascading transitions in continuously pumped erbium-doped YLiF_{4} 1% and 0.01% crystals at 1.6 K. The dependence of the pulse peak intensity on the squared number of involved erbium ions, between 10^{11} and 10^{13}, definitely identifies the cooperative nature of the two pulsed emissions, that are generated by the subsequent, spontaneous formation of coherent states. The observed fluctuations of the time interval between the paired pulses and, most importantly, its correlation with the second pulse duration demonstrate that the erbium ions coherence is indeed seeded by quantum fluctuations.

It is a straightforward result of electromagnetism that dipole oscillators radiate more strongly when they are synchronized and that if there are N dipoles, then the overall emitted intensity scales with N^{2}. In atomic physics, such an enhanced radiative property appears when coherence among two-level identical atoms is established and is well known as “superradiance.” In superfluorescence, atomic coherence develops via a self-organization process stemming from the common radiated field, starting from an incoherently prepared population inversion. In this work we establish the experimental conditions for formation of a macroscopic dipole via superfluorescence, involving the remarkable number of 4×10^{12} atoms. Self-driven atom dynamics, without the mediation of cavity QED nor quantum dots or quantum well structures, is observed in a cryogenically cooled rare-earth doped material. We present clear evidence of a decay rate that is enhanced by more than one million times compared to that of independently emitting atoms.

We discuss a scheme for the parametric amplification of the quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic vacuum in a three-dimensional microwave resonator, and report the preliminary measurements to test its feasibility. In the present experimental scheme, the fundamental mode of a microwave cavity is nonadiabatically perturbed by modulating the index of refraction of the nonlinear optical crystal enclosed therein. Intense, multi-GHz laser pulses, such as those delivered by a mode-locked laser source, impinge on the crystal to accomplish the n-index modulation. We theoretically analyze the process of parametric generation, which is related to the third-order nonlinear coefficient χ(3) of the nonlinear crystal, and assess the suitable experimental conditions for generating real photons from the vacuum. Second-order nonlinear processes are first analyzed as a possible source of spurious photons in quantum vacuum experiments when an ideal, mode-locked laser source is considered. The combination of a crystal non-null χ(2) coefficient and a real mode-locked laser system—i.e. one featuring offset-from-carrier noise and unwanted secondary oscillations—is also experimentally investigated, paving the way for future experiments in three-dimensional cavities. We report on the experimental investigation of the efficiency of some nonlinear crystals to generate microwave (RF) radiation as a result of optical rectification (OR) when irradiated with intense pulse trains delivered by a mode-locked laser at 1064 nm. We have investigated lithium triborate (LBO), lithium niobate (LiNbO3), zinc selenide (ZnSe), and also potassium titanyl orthophosphate (KTP) for comparison with previous measurements. The results are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions based on the form of the second-order nonlinear susceptibility tensor. For some crystals we investigated also the second harmonic generation (SHG) to cross check the theoretical model. We confirm the theoretical prediction that OR leads to the production of higher order RF harmonics that are overtones of the laser repetition rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Generalizing Sikivie’s approach (Sikivie 2014 Phys. Rev. Lett.113 201301), according to which dark matter axions may induce transitions between Zeeman states in an atomic system, an experiment based on a molecular gas is proposed for a search in the axion mass range between 1.4 and 1.9 meV. In particular, a 16O2 sample is brought to the temperature of 280 mK via buffer-gas cooling and then subjected to an external magnetic field; axion-driven transitions are eventually detected by resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionization spectroscopy. In this paper, the status of the experiment MIR (motion induced radiation) is reported. This experiment aims at measuring for the first time the dynamical Casimir effect by using an effective motion of a wall of a superconducting microwave resonant cavity. In this paper, we present the experimental study of a single-mode thermal field carried out using a microwave parametric amplifier tuned at 1.5 GHz and working at room temperature. The parametric amplifier is based on a variable capacitance diode placed inside a microwave resonant cavity. The measured distribution of the thermal photons inside the resonator follows the expected Bose–Einstein distribution probability.

Objectives: While minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is the preferred approach in patients with early-stage lung cancer, intraoperative adverse events (IOAE) may still occur. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of a dedicated preoperative planning program on adverse event occurrence., Methods: A single-centre cross-sectional comparative study was conducted, including all patients with proven/suspected lung cancer undergoing curative MIS, prior (September 2021-October 2022) and after (November 2022-January 2024) the implementation of a preoperative planning program. The preoperative planning program consisted of a weekly assessment of upcoming surgical cases, evaluating surgical strategy, anatomical variations and anticipating surgical difficulties. Data were prospectively collected. The primary outcome was the rate of IOAE. Secondary outcomes were conversion rate, healthcare-associated adverse events and postoperative morbi-mortality., Results: We included 553 patients, 290 without preoperative planning and 263 undergoing a preoperative planning program. The overall IOAE rate was 11.4%, significantly lower after preoperative planning (7.6% vs 14.8%, P = 0.008). The overall healthcare-associated adverse events rate was 23.2%, significantly lower after preoperative planning (17.1% vs 28.6%, P = 0.0014). There were no statistical differences before and after preoperative planning for conversion rate (8.37% vs 10.7%, P = 0.354), complication rate (33.1% vs 34.5%, P = 0.73) and 90-day mortality (0.38% vs 2.07%, P = 0.126). Preoperative planning program impacted surgical strategy in 61/263 patients (23.2%) including a change in the extent of resection in 25/263 patients (9.5%)., Conclusions: Implementation of a systematic preoperative planning program in MIS for lung cancer decreases IOAE enabling an improvement in surgical safety., (© The Author(s) 2024. Objectives: To evaluate the impact of a quality improvement initiative on intraoperative lymph node (LN) dissection adequacy., Methods: A single-centre cohort of 781 naïve patients who underwent resection of non-small cell lung cancer with pathological LN involvement and survived beyond 90 days was reviewed. LN dissection metrics were compared before and after the implementation of a quality improvement initiative. Quality metrics (QM) were: QM1 (≥10 LN examined), QM2 (≥3 intrapulmonary and hilar LN, ≥ 3 mediastinal stations, including station 7 in all cases), and QM3 (combination of QM1 and QM2)., Results: The proportion of patients meeting QM1 did not differ significantly between the pre- (87.8%) and post-implementation (89.1%) periods. However, meeting QM2 and QM3 significantly improved from 79.5% to 88.6% (P = 0.001), and 76.2% to 84.4% (P = 0.007), respectively. Cox proportional hazard regression model for disease-free survival showed that patients operated on after the implementation of the quality improvement initiative exhibited better disease-free survival compared to those operated on before [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR): 0.73; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.59-0.90; P = 0.003]. Nevertheless, none of these quality metrics influenced long-term outcomes. In contrast, adjuvant chemotherapy (aHR: 0.55; 95% CI 0.43-0.71; P < 0.001) was associated with improved disease-free survival. In case of metastatic progression, immunotherapy improved overall survival (hazard ratio: 0.54; 95% CI 0.37-0.77; P = 0.0003)., Conclusions: Utilizing transparent data and collaborative feedback were effective to enhance the quality of nodal assessment in lung cancer surgery. Objective: To determine the incidence of patient safety incidents (PSIs) occurring during perioperative care for lung surgery and their influence on postoperative outcomes at 90 days., Methods: A multicenter study was conducted in three French thoracic surgery departments. Consecutive patients older than age 18 years, who had lung surgery (open, video-assisted, or robotic) for benign or malignant diseases were included. PSIs occurring during lung surgery were reported in Epithor, the French national thoracic database. The primary outcome was the incidence of perioperative PSI. Secondary outcomes were the rates of complications, readmission, and mortality at 90 days. All data were prospectively entered in the Epithor database., Results: From January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021, 1919 surgical procedures were screened and finally, 953 procedures were included. PSIs were observed in 305 out of 953 procedures (32%) cumulating a total number of 369 PSIs. PSI were related to human factors in 179 lout of 369 (48.5%), organization in 101 out of 369 (27.4%), and technology in 85 out of 369 (23%). PSIs were categorized as near-miss events in 97 (26%), no harm incidents (HI) in 125 (34%), mild HI in 83 (22%), moderate HI in 39 (11%), severe HI in 21 (6%), and mortality in 4 (1%). The relative risk of outcome at 90 days was significantly increased according to PSI severity: no PSI/near-miss versus no-HI/HI: relative risk, 2.02 (95% CI, 1.70-2.40) for complications, 2.51 (95% CI, 1.57-8.30) for readmission, and 3.09 (95% CI, 1.15-8.30) for mortality., Conclusions: Incidence of PSIs in thoracic surgery may occur in approximately one-third of procedures. Objectives: To assess the current practice of pulmonary metastasectomy at 15 European Centres. Short- and long-term outcomes were analysed., Methods: Retrospective analysis on patients ≥18 years who underwent curative-intent pulmonary metastasectomy (January 2010 to December 2018). Data were collected on a purpose-built database (REDCap). Exclusion criteria were: previous lung/extrapulmonary metastasectomy, pneumonectomy, non-curative intent and evidence of extrapulmonary recurrence at the time of lung surgery., Results: A total of 1647 patients [mean age 59.5 (standard deviation; SD = 13.1) years; 56.8% males] were included. The most common primary tumour was colorectal adenocarcinoma. The mean disease-free interval was 3.4 (SD = 3.9) years. Relevant comorbidities were observed in 53.8% patients, with a higher prevalence of metabolic disorders (32.3%). Video-assisted thoracic surgery was the chosen approach in 54.9% cases. Wedge resections were the most common operation (67.1%). Lymph node dissection was carried out in 41.4% cases. The median number of resected lesions was 1 (interquartile range 25-75% = 1-2), ranging from 1 to 57. The mean size of the metastases was 18.2 (SD = 14.1) mm, with a mean negative resection margin of 8.9 (SD = 9.4) mm. A R0 resection of all lung metastases was achieved in 95.7% cases. Thirty-day postoperative morbidity was 14.5%, with the most frequent complication being respiratory failure (5.6%). Thirty-day mortality was 0.4%. Five-year overall survival and recurrence-free survival were 62.0% and 29.6%, respectively., Conclusions: Pulmonary metastasectomy is a low-risk procedure that provides satisfactory oncological outcomes and patient survival. Importance: In minimally invasive thoracic surgery, paravertebral block (PVB) using ultrasound (US)-guided technique is an efficient postoperative analgesia. However, it is an operator-dependent process depending on experience and local resources. Because pain-control failure is highly detrimental, surgeons may consider other locoregional analgesic options., Objective: To demonstrate the noninferiority of PVB performed by surgeons under video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), hereafter referred to as PVB-VATS, as the experimental group compared with PVB performed by anesthesiologists using US-guided technique (PVB-US) as the control group., Design, Setting, and Participants: In this single-center, noninferiority, patient-blinded, randomized clinical trial conducted from September 8, 2020, to December 8, 2021, patients older than 18 years who were undergoing a scheduled minimally invasive thoracic surgery with lung resection including video-assisted or robotic approaches were included. Exclusion criteria included scheduled open surgery, any antalgic World Health Organization level greater than 2 before surgery, or a medical history of homolateral thoracic surgery. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1) to an intervention group after general anesthesia. They received single-injection PVB before the first incision was made in the control group (PVB-US) or after 1 incision was made under thoracoscopic vision in the experimental group (PVB-VATS)., Interventions: PVB-VATS or PVB-US., Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary end point was mean 48-hour post-PVB opioid consumption considering a noninferiority range of less than 7.5 mg of opioid consumption between groups. Secondary outcomes included time of anesthesia, surgery, and operating room occupancy; 48-hour pain visual analog scale score at rest and while coughing; and 30-day postoperative complications., Results: A total of 196 patients were randomly assigned to intervention groups: 98 in the PVB-VATS group (mean [SD] age, 64.6 [9.5] years; 53 female [54.1%]) and 98 in the PVB-US group (mean [SD] age, 65.8 [11.5] years; 62 male [63.3%]). The mean (SD) of 48-hour opioid consumption in the PVB-VATS group (33.9 [19.8] mg; 95% CI, 30.0-37.9 mg) was noninferior to that measured in the PVB-US group (28.5 [18.2] mg; 95% CI, 24.8-32.2 mg; difference: -5.4 mg; 95% CI, -∞ to -0.93; noninferiority Welsh test, P ≤ .001). Pain score at rest and while coughing after surgery, overall time, and postoperative complications did not differ between groups., Conclusions and Relevance: PVB placed by a surgeon during thoracoscopy was noninferior to PVB placed by an anesthesiologist using ultrasonography before incision in terms of opioid consumption during the first 48 hours., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04579276.

Objectives: Our goal was to evaluate the association between the distance of the tumour to the visceral pleura and the rate of local recurrence in patients surgically treated for stage pI lung cancer., Methods: We conducted a single-centre retrospective review of 578 consecutive patients with clinical stage IA lung cancer who underwent a lobectomy or segmentectomy from January 2010 to December 2019. We excluded 107 patients with positive margins, previous lung cancer, neoadjuvant treatment and pathological stage II or higher status or for whom preoperative computed tomography (CT) scans were not available at the time of the study. The distance between the tumour and the closest visceral pleura area (fissure/mediastinum/lateral) was assessed by 2 independent investigators who used preoperative CT scans and multiplanar 3-dimensional reconstructions. An area under the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to determine the best threshold for the tumour/pleura distance. Then multivariable survival analyses were used to assess the relationship between local recurrence and this threshold in relation to other variables., Results: Local recurrence occurred in 27/471 patients (5.8%). A cut-off value of 5 mm between the tumour and the pleura was determined statistically. In the multivariable analysis, the local recurrence rate was significantly higher in patients with a tumour-to-pleura distance ≤5 mm compared to patients with a tumour-to-pleura distance >5 mm (8.5% vs 2.7%, hazard ratio 3.36, 95% confidence interval: 1.31-8.59, P = 0.012). Subgroup analyses of patients with pIA and tumour size ≤2 cm identified local recurrences in 4/78 patients treated with segmentectomy (5.1%), with a significantly higher occurrence with tumour-to-pleura distances ≤5 mm (11.4% vs 0%, P = 0.037), and in 16/292 patients treated with lobectomy (5.5%) without significant higher occurrence in tumour-to-pleura distances of ≤5 mm (7.7% vs 3.4%, P = 0.13)., Conclusions: The peripheral location of a lung tumour is associated with a higher rate of local recurrence and should be taken into account during preoperative planning when considering segmental versus lobar resection., (© The Author(s) 2023. Here, we present a frequency tuning mechanism for microwave cavities designed for axion dark matter searches and show that it provides a range of at least 200 MHz for the fundamental mode TM010 resonant at ∼10 GHz. The apparatus is based on a clamshell cavity, with the two semi-cells held together at a fixed joint while the other side opens to tune the frequency of the resonant modes. Measurements of the cavity frequencies and quality factor were taken at liquid helium temperature as the aperture was increased incrementally to ∼2°. We show that the frequency shift is approximately linear with respect to the angle of aperture with no mode crossings present for an aperture less than 2°. Furthermore, the form factor and quality factor of the TM010 mode remain relatively constant throughout the tuning as predicted by simulation., (© 2023 Author(s). In this paper, we will describe the characterization of an RF amplification chain based on a traveling wave parametric amplifier. The detection chain is meant to be used for dark matter axion searches, and thus, it is coupled to a high Q microwave resonant cavity. A system noise temperature T sys = (3.3 ± 0.1) K is measured at a frequency of 10.77 GHz, using a novel calibration scheme, allowing for measurement of T sys exactly at the cavity output port.

Objectives: Resection of thymic tumours including the removal of both the tumour and the thymus gland (thymothymectomy; TT) is the procedure of choice and is recommended in most relevant articles in the literature. Nevertheless, in recent years, some authors have suggested that resection of the tumour (simple thymomectomy; ST) may suffice from an oncological standpoint in patients with early-stage thymoma who do not have myasthenia gravis (MG) (non-MG). The goal of our study was to compare the short- and long-term outcomes of ST versus TT in non-MG early-stage thymomas using the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons thymic database., Methods: A total of 498 non-MG patients with pathological stage I thymoma were included in the study. TT was performed in 466 (93.6%) of 498 patients who had surgery with curative intent; ST was done in 32 (6.4%). The completeness of resection, the rate of complications, the 30-day mortality, the overall recurrence and the freedom from recurrence were compared. We performed crude and propensity score-adjusted comparisons by surgical approach (ST vs TT)., Results: TT showed the same rate of postoperative complications, 30-day mortality and postoperative length of stay as ST. The 5-year overall survival rate was 89% in the TT group and 55% in the ST group. The 5-year freedom from recurrence was 96% in the TT group and 79% in the ST group., Conclusion: Patients with early-stage thymoma without MG who have a TT show significantly better freedom from recurrence than those who have an ST, without an increase in postoperative morbidity rate., (© The Author(s) 2021. Objective: Currently, unlike earlier years, patients affected by multiple primary malignancies (MPM) are significantly increased, thus representing a clinical-pathologic category worthy of attention. Their clinical features and prognosis still need to be studied thoroughly, and this is the aim of our study., Methods: Patients with MPM involving lung cancer admitted in our center between January 2006 and December 2016 were considered. Parametric and nonparametric testing was used for statistical comparisons. Univariate and multivariate analysis was used to evaluate the variables associated with a prognostic value., Results: MPM incidence was 19.8%. Among the 222 patients with MPM enrolled, 204 (91.8%) had two malignancies, while 18 (8.2%) had three malignancies, 38 (17.1%) were synchronous, 41 (18.5%) had lung cancer first (LCF) and 181 (81.5%) had other cancer first (OCF). A significant difference between the time of first cancer diagnosis to the second cancer diagnosis in the LCF vs OCF group was found (median 32 vs 51 months; p-value: 0.038). The most frequent anatomical sites of malignancies preceding or following lung cancer were prostate, colorectal, bladder, and larynx. Multivariate analysis revealed that sex, histologic pattern, and time and order of occurrence were independent factors for overall survival, with male sex, squamous cell lung carcinoma, synchronous and LCF MPM significantly associated with poorer overall survival., Conclusions: Prostate, colorectal, bladder, and larynx were the most frequent anatomical sites of malignancies preceding or following lung cancer. Male sex, squamous cell lung carcinoma, synchronous and LCF MPM might be associated with poorer prognosis.

Objectives: Tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) are critically implicated in the clinical outcome and response to immunotherapy in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. The functional competence of lymphocyte subpopulations is strongly conditioned by their spatial arrangement within the tumour immune microenvironment. The aim of this study was to determine whether the tissue localization of specific TIL subpopulations might have an impact on the risk of recurrence in surgically resected NSCLC., Methods: High-speed scanning of whole slide images was performed on immunohistochemically stained tissue sections from 97 NSCLC patients to assess the number and ratio of CD3+, CD8+ and PD-1+ T-lymphocytes. TIL distribution was computed considering the intratumoural (proximal or distal) and peripheral (invasive margin) localization as well as their location within the fibrotic tissue (immune excluded). The tumour proliferative index was assessed by Ki67 labelling. The impact of TILs number and distribution on clinical-pathological characteristics and outcomes were statistically analysed., Results: High density and percentage of proximal CD8+ TILs and low PD-1-to-CD8 ratio had a positive impact on disease-free-survival (P = 0.03) and overall survival (P = 0.003). An inverse correlation was observed between the abundance of intratumoural CD8+ TILs carrying PD-1 inhibitory receptor and cancer cell proliferation. Cases with high compared to low fraction of immune excluded CD8+ TILs had significantly reduced 5-year overall survival (n events: 22 vs 12; P = 0.04) and disease-free survival (n events: 24 vs 16; P = 0.03) rates while the amount of CD3+ and CD8+ TILs located at the invasive margin had a favourable effect on the clinical course., Conclusions: Mapping TIL subpopulations may implement the definition of prognostic parameters in surgically resected NSCLC., (© The Author(s) 2020. Searches for dark matter axions involve the use of microwave resonant cavities operating in a strong magnetic field. Detector sensitivity is directly related to the cavity quality factor, which is limited, until recently, to the use of non-superconducting metals by the presence of the external magnetic field. In this paper, we present a cavity of novel design whose quality factor is not affected by a magnetic field. It is based on a photonic structure by the use of sapphire rods. The quality factor at cryogenic temperature is in excess of 5 × 10 5 for a selected mode.

A ferromagnetic axion haloscope searches for dark matter in the form of axions by exploiting their interaction with electronic spins. It is composed of an axion-to-electromagnetic field transducer coupled to a sensitive rf detector. The former is a photon-magnon hybrid system, and the latter is based on a quantum-limited Josephson parametric amplifier. The hybrid system consists of ten 2.1 mm diameter yttrium iron garnet spheres coupled to a single microwave cavity mode by means of a static magnetic field. Our setup is the most sensitive rf spin magnetometer ever realized. The minimum detectable field is 5.5×10^{-19}  T with 9 h integration time, corresponding to a limit on the axion-electron coupling constant g&#95;{aee}≤1.7×10^{-11} at 95% C.L. The scientific run of our haloscope resulted in the best limit on dark matter axions to electron coupling constant in a frequency span of about 120 MHz, corresponding to the axion-mass range 42.4-43.1  μeV. This is also the first apparatus to perform a wide axion-mass scanning by only changing the static magnetic field.

Black hairy tongue (BHT) is a self-limiting disorder characterized by abnormal hypertrophy and elongation of filiform papillae on the surface of the tongue. The exact mechanism of drug-induced BHT is unknown. Several factors have been implicated and included smoking or chewing tobacco, drinking alcohol, poor oral hygiene and antibiotics such as tetracyclines and penicillins. We report a quite uncommon case of Linezolid-induced BHT in a patient with a long-lasting history of chest wall infection.

We present a detection scheme to search for QCD axion dark matter, that is based on a direct interaction between axions and electrons explicitly predicted by DFSZ axion models. The local axion dark matter field shall drive transitions between Zeeman-split atomic levels separated by the axion rest mass energy m a c 2 . Axion-related excitations are then detected with an upconversion scheme involving a pump laser that converts the absorbed axion energy (~hundreds of μeV) to visible or infrared photons, where single photon detection is an established technique. The proposed scheme involves rare-earth ions doped into solid-state crystalline materials, and the optical transitions take place between energy levels of 4f N electron configuration. Beyond discussing theoretical aspects and requirements to achieve a cosmologically relevant sensitivity, especially in terms of spectroscopic material properties, we experimentally investigate backgrounds due to the pump laser at temperatures in the range 1.9 - 4.2 K. Our results rule out excitation of the upper Zeeman component of the ground state by laser-related heating effects, and are of some help in optimizing activated material parameters to suppress the multiphonon-assisted Stokes fluorescence.

Low energy threshold detectors are necessary in many frontier fields of the experimental physics. In this work, we present a novel detection approach based on pure or doped matrices of inert gases solidified at cryogenic temperatures. The small energy release of the incident particle can be transferred directly (in pure crystals) or through a laser-driven ionization (in doped materials) to the electrons of the medium that are then converted into free electrons. The charge collection process of the electrons that consists in their drift within the crystal and their extraction through the solid-vacuum interface gives rise to an electric signal that we exploit for preliminary tests of charge collection and crystal quality. Such tests are carried out in different matrices of neon and methane using an UV-assisted apparatus for electron injection in crystals.

Background: Pulmonary metastasectomy is considered a standard procedure in the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC). Different prognostic factors including multiple metastatic nodules, the presence of extra-pulmonary metastases and BRAF mutation status have been associated with poor survival. The aim of this study was to evaluate which factors influenced survival in CRC patients undergoing pulmonary metastasectomy by studying primary tumors and pulmonary metastases., Methods: All patients treated for primary CRC who presented pulmonary metastases in a 10-year period were considered (group A). A control group treated for primary CRC who did not develop any pulmonary or extra-pulmonary metastases was taken for comparison (group B). Different prognostic factors including gender, age, tumor location, histological type, inflammatory infiltrate, BRAF, CDX2 and extra-pulmonary metastases were analyzed. Overall survival (OS) and patients' survival after pulmonary metastasectomy were also considered., Results: Fifty-four patients were evaluated in group A and twenty-three in group B. In group A, BRAF immunohistochemistry did not significantly differ between primary tumors and pulmonary metastases; no difference of BRAF expression was found between group A and B. Even the expression of CDX2 was not significantly different in primary tumors and metastases. Similarly, in group B CDX2 did not significantly differ from primary CRC of group A. The most significant prognostic factor was the presence of extra-pulmonary metastases. Patients with extra-pulmonary metastases experienced a significant shorter survival compared to patients with pulmonary metastases alone (P=0.001 with log-rank test vs. P=0.003 with univariate Cox regression). Interestingly, patients with right pulmonary metastases presented a significant longer survival than those with left pulmonary metastases (P=0.027 with log-rank test vs. 0.04 with univariate Cox regression)., Conclusions: The main prognostic factor associated with poor survival after lung resection of CRC metastases is a history of extra-pulmonary metastases. We demonstrate an all-optical method for manipulating the magnetization in a 1-mm yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) sphere placed in a ∼0.17  T uniform magnetic field. A harmonic of the frequency comb delivered by a multi-GHz infrared laser source is tuned to the Larmor frequency of the YIG sphere to drive magnetization oscillations, which in turn give rise to a radiation field used to thoroughly investigate the phenomenon. The radiation damping issue that occurs at high frequency and in the presence of highly magnetizated materials has been overcome by exploiting the magnon-photon strong coupling regime in microwave cavities. Our findings demonstrate an effective technique for ultrafast control of the magnetization vector in optomagnetic materials via polarization rotation and intensity modulation of an incident laser beam. We eventually get a second-order susceptibility value of ∼10^{-7}  cm^{2}/MW for single crystal YIG.

We study the optomechanical coupling of a oscillating effective mirror with a Rydberg atomic gas, mediated by the dynamical atom-mirror Casimir-Polder force. This coupling may produce a near-field resonant atomic excitation whose probability scales as ∝(d(2)an(4)t)(2)/z(0)(8), where z(0) is the average atom-surface distance, d the atomic dipole moment, a the mirror's effective oscillation amplitude, n the initial principal quantum number, and t the time. We propose an experimental configuration to realize this system with a cold atom gas trapped at a distance ∼2×10  μm from a semiconductor substrate whose dielectric constant is periodically driven by an external laser pulse, hence realizing an effective mechanical mirror motion due to the periodic change of the substrate from transparent to reflecting. For a parabolic gas shape, this effect is predicted to excite about ∼10(2) atoms of a dilute gas of 10(3) trapped Rydberg atoms with n=75 after about 0.5  μs, which is high enough to be detected in typical Rydberg gas experimental conditions.

We report on a novel electro-optic device for the diagnostics of high repetition rate laser systems. It is composed of a microwave receiver and of a second order nonlinear crystal, whose irradiation with a train of short laser pulses produces a time-dependent polarization in the crystal itself as a consequence of optical rectification. This process gives rise to the emission of microwave radiation that is detected by a receiver and is analyzed to infer the repetition rate and intensity of the pulses. We believe that this new method may overcome some of the limitations of photodetection techniques.

We report measurements of microwave (RF) generation in the centimeter band accomplished by irradiating a nonlinear KTiOPO4 crystal with a home-made, infrared laser at 1064 nm as a result of optical rectification. The laser delivers pulse trains of duration up to 1 μs. Each train consists of several high-intensity pulses at an adjustable repetition rate of approximately 4.6 GHz. The duration of the generated RF pulses is determined by that of the pulse trains. We have investigated both microwave- and second harmonic generation as a function of the laser intensity and of the orientation of the laser polarization with respect to the crystallographic axes of KTP.

We describe recent improvements in the development of the high power laser system used in the motion induced radiation (MIR) experiment to amplify electromagnetic fields inside a microwave cavity. We report on a high-energy solid-state laser based on a master-oscillator power-amplifier system seeded by a 5-GHz repetition-rate mode-locked oscillator, aimed at the excitation of the dynamic Casimir effect by optically modulating a microwave resonator. Solid-state amplifiers provide up to 250 mJ at 1064 nm in a 500-ns (macro-)pulse envelope containing 12-ps (micro-)pulses, with a macro/micropulse format and energy resembling that of near-infrared free-electron lasers. Efficient second-harmonic conversion allowed synchronous pumping of an optical parametric oscillator, obtaining up to 40 mJ in the range 750-850 nm.

A diode-pumped single-pass amplifier system relying on two grazing-incidence Nd:YVO(4) slabs was developed to increase the energy of low-repetition-rate pulses from a decimated low-power cw mode-locked oscillator. Single-pass unsaturated gain up to 1.3x10(5) was achieved, and amplified pulses of 10-muJ energy and 8.0-ps duration were obtained. Efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) at 532 nm was achieved, as well as traveling-wave parametric conversion in the range 770-1020 nm (signal) and 1110-1720 nm (idler).

We report on a simple design for a multi-GHz tunable-repetition-rate diode-pumped picosecond laser. Using a plano-Brewster Nd:GdVO4 crystal in a V-folded cavity employing only readily available commercial components, we achieved passive mode-locking with 4.4-ps pulses tunable in the range 2.5-2.7 GHz. This laser is meant to be employed in the MIR experiment that aims at the detection of the Schwinger radiation (dynamical Casimir effect).
