Abstract The structure of unimodular gravity (UG) is invariant to a subclass of diffeomorphism, the transverse diffeomorphism, due to the unimodular condition $$\sqrt{-g}=\epsilon $$ - g = ϵ . Consequently, there is a freedom to define how the conservation laws of the energy–momentum tensor in unimodular gravity in the cosmological context. One of the main characteristics of the complete system of equations that describe cosmological dynamics in UG is that they form an underdetermined system if the usual conservation law of the energy–momentum tensor is not considered in your structure. In this article, we propose the construction of a background cosmological model based on the description of a holographic dark energy component with a cutoff of the order of Ricci scalar in non-conservative UG. This choice means that the complete set of equations remains underdetermined, however, the new feature of this cosmological model is the appearance of an interaction between matter and dark energy. Indeed, this is a well-known characteristic of cosmological models in which we have holographic dark energy density. Consequently, we propose an ansatz to the interaction term $$Q=\beta H \rho _{m}$$ Q = β H ρ m , and obtain the cosmological parameters of our model. We found a viable universe model with similar characteristics to the $$\Lambda \textrm{CDM}$$ Λ CDM model. We performed statistical analysis of the background model using the “Cosmic Chronometer” (CC) data for H(z), and obtain as a result using AIC, and the BIC as model selection criteria that $$\Lambda \textrm{CDM}$$ Λ CDM prevails as the best model. However, the proposed model is competitive when compared to the cosmological model $$\omega \textrm{CDM}$$ ω CDM .

We briefly review the analytical continuation method for determining quasinormal modes (QNMs) and the associated frequencies in open systems. We explore two exactly solvable cases based on the Pöschl–Teller potential to show that the analytical continuation method cannot determine the full set of QNMs and frequencies of a given problem starting from the associated bound state problem in quantum mechanics. The root of the problem is that many QNMs are the analytically continued counterparts of solutions that do not belong to the domain where the associated Schrödinger operator is self-adjoint, challenging the application of the method for determining full sets of QNMs. We illustrate these problems through the physically relevant case of BTZ black holes, where the natural domain of the problem is the negative real line.

Abstract In this article, the implementation of black-bounce solutions in f(R) theories is investigated. Black-bounce solutions are regular configurations of the static spherically symmetric space-time, containing both black holes and wormholes structures. In General Relativity (GR), black-bounce solution implies violation of the energy conditions. We investigate the same issue in f(R) theories using two strategies: first, supposing a given form for the f(R) function and then determining the matter behavior; second, imposing a condition on the matter density and obtaining the resulting f(R) function. In all cases, a given structure for the metric functions is supposed. Violation of the energy conditions still occur but they are less severe than in the corresponding GR cases. We propose a zero-density model that has horizons, which differs from the GR case. We also propose a model with positive energy density and show that $$\rho +p_r>0$$ ρ + p r > 0 , which was not the case in GR.

Abstract In this work, we study the influence of f(R, T) gravity on rapidly rotating neutron stars. First we discuss the main aspects of this modified theory of gravity where the gravitational Lagrangian is an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar R and of the trace of the energy–momentum tensor T. Then we present the basic equations for neutron stars including the equations of state used in the present work to describe the hadronic matter. Some physical quantities of interest are calculated such as mass–radius relations, moments of inertia, angular momentum, and compactness. By considering four different rotation regimes, we obtain results that indicate substantial modifications in the physical properties of neutron stars in f(R, T) gravity when compared to those in the context of general relativity. In particular, the mass–radius relation for sequences of stars indicates that f(R, T) gravity increases the mass and the equatorial radius of the neutron stars for stars rotating with an angular velocity smaller than Kepler limit.

Abstract A large AdS Schwarzschild black hole can be approximated by an AdS planar black hole. However, the temperature of a planar black hole is not well defined due to the translational invariance of the horizon. We propose to fix this arbitrariness by imposing the entropy area law. Furthermore, using the AdS/CFT holography, we propose a relationship between the temperatures of an AdS planar and large AdS Schwarzschild black holes.

After a century of cosmological observations, we have a solid standard model of cosmology. However, from a theoretical viewpoint, it is a compelling question if the cosmological data inevitably require an expanding universe independently of the theoretical framework. The possibility of obtaining a viable cosmological model with a constant scale-factor is discussed in the context of the Brans–Dicke class of scalar–tensor theories. It is shown that a flat spatial section requires the presence of a stiff matter fluid. However, some kinematical properties of the standard cosmological model can be reproduced. A realistic scenario may require a more complex class of scalar–tensor theories.

Abstract In this work we review the issue of imposing the conservation of the energy–momentum tensor as a necessary condition to recover the equivalence between the unimodular gravity and General Relativity (GR) equipped with a cosmological constant. This procedure is usually interpreted as an ad hoc imposition on the unimodular theory’s structure. Whereas the consequences of avoiding the conservation of the total energy–momentum tensor has been already introduced in the literature, it has been not widely explored so far. We study an expanding universe sourced by a single effective perfect fluid such that the null divergence of its energy–momentum tensor is not imposed. As we shall show, in this scheme, the unimodular theory has its own conservation equation obtained from the Bianchi identities. We explore the evolution of the homogeneous and isotropic expanding background and show that a viable cosmological scenario exists. Also, we consider scalar perturbations with particular attention given to the gauge issue. We show that contrary to the traditional unimodular theory where the synchronous and longitudinal (newtonian) gauge for cosmological perturbations are not permitted, if the conservation of the energy–momentum is relaxed the scalar perturbations in the synchronous condition survive and present a growing mode behavior. We study therefore a new cosmological scenario in which the dynamics of the universe transits from the radiative phase directly to a accelerated one but allowing thus for structure formation.

Abstract This work is geared towards analysis of shadows cast by Kerr-de Sitter (KdS) and Kerr-de Sitter Revisited (RKdS) black holes. Considering observers in the vicinity of the static radius, we derive the impact parameters defining the apparent positions of the shadows. Such observers are of interest to our work because embedding diagrams have shown that de Sitter space-time is analogous to an asymptotically flat one in the vicinity of the static radius. We also perform a comparative analysis between our result with that in Ref. [1]. Furthermore, we numerically obtain the radii of curvature, vertical diameters and horizontal diameters of the shadows. We find that for $$\Lambda =1.11\times 10^{-52} \,\, m^{-2}$$ Λ = 1.11 × 10 - 52 m - 2 , M87* observations cannot distinguish a RKdS black hole shadow from that of a Kerr black hole. Additionally, for the same value of $$\Lambda $$ Λ , KdS and RKdS black hole shadows are, in practise, indistinguishable. Previously, it has also been shown that when $$\Lambda =1.11\times 10^{-52} \,\, {\text {m}}^{-2}$$ Λ = 1.11 × 10 - 52 m - 2 , KdS and Kerr black hole shadows are indistinguishable. Utilizing the 2017 EHT observations of M87* on the allowed range of the characteristic radius of the shadow, we obtain constraints on both black holes. When, $$a/M>0.812311$$ a / M > 0.812311 , we observe that large angles of inclination ( $$\theta >30.5107^{\circ }$$ θ > 30 . 5107 ∘ ) do not pass the constraints for both KdS and RKdS black holes.

A Newtonian-like theory inspired by the Brans–Dicke gravitational Lagrangian has been recently proposed by us. For static configurations, the gravitational coupling acquires an intrinsic spatial dependence within the matter distribution. Therefore, the interior of astrophysical configurations may provide a testable environment for this approach as long as no screening mechanism is evoked. In this work, we focus on the stellar hydrostatic equilibrium structure in such a varying Newtonian gravitational coupling G scenario. A modified Lane–Emden equation is presented and its solutions for various values of the polytropic index are discussed. The role played by the theory parameter ω, the analogue of the Brans–Dicke parameter, in the physical properties of stars is discussed.

Abstract The geometry of the Ellis–Bronnikov wormhole is implemented in the Rastall and k-essence theories of gravity with a self-interacting scalar field. The form of the scalar field potential is determined in both cases. A stability analysis with respect to spherically symmetric time-dependent perturbations is carried out, and it shows that in k-essence theory the wormhole is unstable, like the original version of this geometry supported by a massless phantom scalar field in general relativity. In Rastall’s theory, it turns out that a perturbative approach reveals the same inconsistency that was found previously for black hole solutions: time-dependent perturbations of the static configuration prove to be excluded by the equations of motion, and the wormhole is, in this sense, stable under spherical perturbations.

Unimodular gravity is one of the oldest geometric gravity theories and alternatives to general relativity. Essentially, it is based on the Einstein–Hilbert Lagrangian with an additional constraint on the determinant of the metric. It can be explicitly shown that unimodular gravity can be recast as general relativity in the presence of a cosmological constant. This fact has led to many discussions on the equivalence of both theories at the classical and quantum levels. Here, we present an analysis focused on the classical scalar perturbations around a cosmological background. We focus on the unusual situation in which the typical conservation laws are not adopted. The discussion is extended to the case where a non-minimal coupled scalar field is introduced. We also present a gauge-invariant analysis showing that perturbations in unimodular gravity display instabilities. Our results reinforce that the equivalence is not verified completely at a cosmological perturbative level.

Abstract In this work, we consider effects of the dynamical vacuum in quantum cosmology in presence of a minimum length introduced by the GUP (generalized uncertainty principle) related to the modified commutation relation $$[{\hat{X}},{\hat{P}}] := \frac{i\hbar }{ 1 - \beta {\hat{P}}^2 }$$ [ X ^ , P ^ ] : = i ħ 1 - β P ^ 2 . We determine the wave function of the Universe $$ \psi _{qp}(\xi ,t)$$ ψ qp ( ξ , t ) , which is solution of the modified Wheeler–DeWitt equation in the representation of the quasi-position space, in the limit where the scale factor of the Universe is small. Although $$\psi _{qp}(\xi ,t)$$ ψ qp ( ξ , t ) is a physically acceptable state it is not a realizable state of the Universe because $$ \psi _{qp}(\xi ,t)$$ ψ qp ( ξ , t ) has infinite norm, as in the ordinary case with no minimal length.

Abstract In the present investigation we use observational data of $$ f \sigma _ {8} $$ f σ 8 to determine observational constraints in the plane $$(\Omega _{m0},\sigma _{8})$$ ( Ω m 0 , σ 8 ) using two different methods: the growth factor parametrization and the numerical solutions method for density contrast, $$\delta _{m}$$ δ m . We verified the correspondence between both methods for three models of accelerated expansion: the $$\Lambda CDM$$ Λ C D M model, the $$ w_{0}w_{a} CDM$$ w 0 w a C D M model and the running cosmological constant RCC model. In all case we consider also the curvature as free parameter. The study of this correspondence is important because the growth factor parametrization method is frequently used to discriminate between competitive models. Our results we allow us to determine that there is a good correspondence between the observational constrains using both methods. We also test the power of the $$ f\sigma _ {8} $$ f σ 8 data to constraints the curvature parameter within the $$ \Lambda CDM $$ Λ C D M model. For this we use a non-parametric reconstruction using Gaussian processes. Our results show that the $$ f\sigma _ {8}$$ f σ 8 data with the current precision level does not allow to distinguish between a flat and non-flat universe.

Abstract Theoretically, the running of the cosmological constant in the IR region is not ruled out. On the other hand, from the QFT viewpoint, the energy released due to the variation of the cosmological constant in the late Universe cannot go to the matter sector. For this reason, the phenomenological bounds on such a running are not sufficiently restrictive. The situation can be different in the early Universe when the gravitational field was sufficiently strong to provide an efficient creation of particles from the vacuum. We develop a framework for systematically exploring this possibility. It is supposed that the running occurs in the epoch when the Dark Matter already decoupled and is expanding adiabatically, while the usual matter should be regarded approximately massless and can be abundantly created from vacuum due to the decay of vacuum energy. By using the handy model of Reduced Relativistic Gas for describing the warm Dark Matter, we consider the dynamics of both cosmic background and linear perturbations and evaluate the impact of the vacuum decay on the matter power spectrum and to the first CMB peak. Additionally, using the combined SNIa+BAO data, we find the best-fit values for the free parameters of the model.

Abstract We investigate the possibilities of reconstructing the cosmic equation of state (EoS) for high redshift. In order to obtain general results, we use two model-independent approaches. The first reconstructs the EoS using comoving distance and the second makes use of the Hubble parameter data. To implement the first method, we use a recent set of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) measures. To implement the second method, we generate simulated data using the Sandage–Loeb (SL) effect; for the fiducial model, we use the $$\Lambda CDM$$ ΛCDM model. In both cases, the statistical analysis is conducted through the Gaussian processes (non-parametric). In general, we demonstrate that this methodology for reconstructing the EoS using a non-parametric method plus a model-independent approach works appropriately due to the feasibility of calculation and the ease of introducing a priori information ($$H_ {0}$$ H0 and $$\Omega _{m0}$$ Ωm0 ). In the near future, following this methodology with a higher number of high quality data will help obtain strong restrictions for the EoS.

Abstract In a recent paper we have shown that a minimally coupled, self-interacting scalar field of mass m can form black holes of mass $$M=\sqrt{3}/(4m)$$ M=3/(4m) (in Planck units). If dark matter is composed by axions, they can form miniclusters that for QCD axions have masses below this value. In this work it is shown that for a scenario in which the axion mass depends on the temperature as $$m \propto T^{-6}$$ m∝T-6 , minicluster masses above $$0.32\,M_\odot $$ 0.32M⊙ , corresponding to an axion mass of $$3\times 10^{-10}$$ 3×10-10 eV, exceed M and can collapse into black holes. If a fraction of these black holes is in binary systems, gravitational waves emitted during the inspiral phase could be detected by advanced interferometers like LIGO or VIRGO and by the planned Einstein Telescope. For a detection rate of one event per year, the lower limits on the binary fraction are $$10^{-4}$$ 10-4 and $$10^{-6}$$ 10-6 for LIGO and Einstein Telescope respectively.

Abstract We investigate some consequences of a specific non-conservation of the energy-momentum tensor for the physics of certain cosmic string configurations. This non-conservation was induced by a new gravitational theory recently introduced as an attempt to incorporate dissipative systems in the description of gravity. This model of gravity is endowed with a variational principle, where an action dependence on the geometric sector is assumed. For the Abelian Higgs string we derive the dynamical equations and provide the numerical solutions describing the behavior of the Higgs and gauge fields and the profile of the metric functions for different cases of the parameter that characterizes the model. Additionally, from this numerical approach we find how the inner structure of the cosmic string is affected by this underlying gravitational theory, by analyzing the deviations both on the mass per unit length and the deficit angle of the string. Next, we proceed with an analytical treatment obtaining the solution close to the string axis and also the corresponding vacuum solution. Our analytical results are also complemented with the study of a thick cosmic string model, where the defect is endowed with a finite core. In this case we have obtained the proper interior solution which, joined together with the vacuum metric outside, provides an exact solution for the exterior geometry which generalizes previous results and leads to a decreasing of the mass per unit length of the cosmic string.

We propose a unimodular version of the Brans–Dicke theory designed with a constrained Lagrangian formulation. The resulting field equations are traceless. The vacuum solutions in the cosmological background reproduce the corresponding solutions of the usual Brans–Dicke theory but with a cosmological constant term. A perturbative analysis of the scalar modes is performed and stable and unstable configurations appear, in contrast with the Brans–Dicke case for which only stable configurations occur. On the other hand, tensorial modes in this theory remain the same as in the traditional Brans–Dicke theory.

We elaborate on the inflationary model starting from multidimensional Lagrangian and gravity with second-order curvature terms. The effective scalar field is related to the Ricci scalar of extra dimensions. It is shown that the Kretschmann and the Ricci tensor square terms dominate during inflation. The observable values of the spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio are obtained for specific values of the model parameters.

We classified and studied the charged black hole and wormhole solutions in the Einstein–Maxwell system in the presence of a massless, real scalar field. The possible existence of charged black holes in general scalar–tensor theories was studied in Bronnikov et al., 1999; black holes and wormholes exist for a negative kinetic term for the scalar field. Using a conformal transformation, the static, spherically symmetric possible structures in the minimal coupled system are described. Besides wormholes and naked singularities, only a restricted class of black hole exists, exhibiting a horizon with an infinite surface and a timelike central singularity. The black holes and wormholes defined in the Einstein frame have some specificities with respect to the non-minimal coupling original frame, which are discussed in the text.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most prevalent endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age. PCOS has been associated with distinct metabolic and cardiovascular diseases and with autoimmune conditions, predominantly autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD). AITD has been reported in 18–40% of PCOS women, depending on PCOS diagnostic criteria and ethnicity. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to summarize the available evidence regarding the likelihood of women with PCOS also having AITD in comparison to a reference group of non-PCOS women. We systematically searched EMBASE and MEDLINE for non-interventional case control, cross-sectional or cohort studies published until August 2017. The Ottawa–Newcastle Scale was used to assess the methodological quality of studies. Statistical meta-analysis was performed with R. Thirteen studies were selected for the present analysis, including 1210 women diagnosed with PCOS and 987 healthy controls. AITD was observed in 26.03 and 9.72% of PCOS and control groups respectively. A significant association was detected between PCOS and chance of AITD (OR = 3.27, 95% CI 2.32–4.63). Notably, after geographical stratification, the higher risk of AITD in PCOS women persisted for Asians (OR = 4.56, 95% CI 2.47–8.43), Europeans (OR = 3.27, 95% CI 2.07–5.15) and South Americans (OR = 1.86, 95% CI 1.05–3.29). AIDT is a frequent condition in PCOS patients and might affect thyroid function. Thus, screening for thyroid function and thyroid-specific autoantibodies should be considered in patients with PCOS even in the absence of overt symptoms. Abstract With a suitable decomposition of its energy-momentum tensor into pressureless matter and a vacuum type term, we investigate the spherical gravitational collapse of a minimally coupled, self-interacting scalar field, showing that it collapses to a singularity. The formed blackhole has a mass $$M \sim 1/m$$ M∼1/m (in Planck units), where m is the mass of the scalar field. If the latter has the axion mass, $$m \sim 10^{-5}$$ m∼10-5 eV, the former has a mass $$M \sim 10^{-5} M_{\odot }$$ M∼10-5M⊙ .

Abstract Reduced relativistic gas (RRG) is a useful approach to describe the warm dark matter (WDM) or the warmness of baryonic matter in the approximation when the interaction between the particles is irrelevant. The use of Maxwell distribution leads to the complicated equation of state of the Jüttner model of relativistic ideal gas. The RRG enables one to reproduce the same physical situation but in a much simpler form. For this reason RRG can be a useful tool for the theories with some sort of a “new Physics”. On the other hand, even without the qualitatively new physical implementations, the RRG can be useful to describe the general features of WDM in a model-independent way. In this sense one can see, in particular, to which extent the cosmological manifestations of WDM may be dependent on its Particle Physics background. In the present work RRG is used as a complementary approach to derive the main observational features for the WDM in a model-independent way. The only assumption concerns a non-negligible velocity v for dark matter particles which is parameterized by the warmness parameter b. The relatively high values of b ( $$b^2\gtrsim 10^{-6}$$ b2≳10-6 ) erase the radiation (photons and neutrinos) dominated epoch and cause an early warm matter domination after inflation. Furthermore, RRG approach enables one to quantify the lack of power in linear matter spectrum at small scales and in particular, reproduces the relative transfer function commonly used in context of WDM with accuracy of $$\lesssim 1\%$$ ≲1% . A warmness with $$b^2\lesssim 10^{-6}$$ b2≲10-6 (equivalent to $$v\lesssim 300$$ v≲300 km/s) does not alter significantly the CMB power spectrum and is in agreement with the background observational tests.

Abstract We investigate the braneworld gravity starting from the non-conservative gravitational field equations in a five-dimensional bulk. The approach is based on the Gauss–Codazzi formalism along with the study of the braneworld consistency conditions. The effective gravitational equations on the brane are obtained and the constraint leading to a brane energy-momentum conservation is analyzed.

Abstract A minimal-length scenario can be considered as an effective description of quantum gravity effects. In quantum mechanics the introduction of a minimal length can be accomplished through a generalization of Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle. In this scenario, state eigenvectors of the position operator are no longer physical states and the representation in momentum space or a representation in a quasiposition space must be used. In this work, we solve the Schroedinger equation with a Dirac $$\delta $$ δ -function potential in quasiposition space. We calculate the bound state energy and the coefficients of reflection and transmission for the scattering states. We show that leading corrections are of order of the minimal length $$({ O}(\sqrt{\beta }))$$ (O(β)) and the coefficients of reflection and transmission are no longer the same for the Dirac delta well and barrier as in ordinary quantum mechanics. Furthermore, assuming that the equivalence of the 1s state energy of the hydrogen atom and the bound state energy of the Dirac $${{\delta }}$$ δ -function potential in the one-dimensional case is kept in a minimal-length scenario, we also find that the leading correction term for the ground state energy of the hydrogen atom is of the order of the minimal length and $$\varDelta x_{\min } \le 10^{-25}$$ Δxmin≤10-25 m.

Abstract Both scalar fields and (generalized) Chaplygin gases have been widely used separately to characterize the dark sector of the universe. Here we investigate the cosmological background dynamics for a mixture of both these components and quantify the fractional abundances that are admitted by observational data from supernovae of type Ia and from the evolution of the Hubble rate. Moreover, we study how the growth rate of (baryonic) matter perturbations is affected by the dark-sector perturbations.

Abstract In this paper the f(R) global monopole is reexamined. We provide an exact solution for the modified field equations in the presence of a global monopole for regions outside its core, generalizing previous results. Additionally, we discuss some particular cases obtained from this solution. We consider a setup consisting of a possible Schwarzschild black hole that absorbs the topological defect, giving rise to a static black hole endowed with a monopole’s charge. Besides, we demonstrate how the asymptotic behavior of the Higgs field far from the monopole’s core is shaped by a class of spacetime metrics which includes the ones analyzed here. In order to assess the gravitational properties of this system, we analyze the geodesic motion of both massive and massless test particles moving in the vicinity of such configuration. For the material particles we set the requirements they have to obey in order to experience stable orbits. On the other hand, for the photons we investigate how their trajectories are affected by the gravitational field of this black hole.

Abstract The k-essence theory with a power-law function of $$(\partial \phi )^2$$ ( ∂ ϕ ) 2 and Rastall’s non-conservative theory of gravity with a scalar field are shown to have the same solutions for the metric under the assumption that both the metric and the scalar fields depend on a single coordinate. This equivalence (called k–R duality) holds for static configurations with various symmetries (spherical, plane, cylindrical, etc.) and all homogeneous cosmologies. In the presence of matter, Rastall’s theory requires additional assumptions on how the stress-energy tensor non-conservation is distributed between different contributions. Two versions of such non-conservation are considered in the case of isotropic spatially flat cosmological models with a perfect fluid: one (R1) in which there is no coupling between the scalar field and the fluid, and another (R2) in which the fluid separately obeys the usual conservation law. In version R1 it is shown that k–R duality holds not only for the cosmological models themselves but also for their adiabatic perturbations. In version R2, among other results, a particular model is singled out that reproduces the same cosmological expansion history as the standard $$\Lambda $$ Λ CDM model but predicts different behaviors of small fluctuations in the k-essence and Rastall frameworks.

We study the John term of Fab Four cosmology in the presence of a scalar potential. We show here how this theory can describe a wide range of cosmological solutions. This theory has two general functions of the scalar field: the potential V(ϕ) and the John coefficient function Vj(ϕ). We show that for very simple choices of those functions, we can describe an accelerated expansion, a radiation-dominated era, and a matter-dominated era. By means of simple modifications, it is also possible to describe nonsingular bouncing versions of those solutions and cyclic universes. We also address some quantum issues of that theory, showing that, for the most significant singular cases, the theory admits a classically well behaved quantization, even though the Hamiltonian has fractional powers in the momenta. General Relativity resembles a very elegant crystal glass: If we touch its principles, that is, its Lagrangian, there is a risk of breaking everything. Or, if we will, it is like a short blanket: Curing some problems creates new problems. This paper is devoted to bring to light the reasons why we pursue the possibility of a non-Lagrangian theory of gravity under the hypothesis of an extension of the original general relativity with an ansatz inspired in the fundamental principles of classical and quantum physics.

Background: The Mood Rhythm Instrument (MRI) is a new self-report questionnaire that aims to assess, the presence, and timing of daily patterns of mood-related symptoms. Here, we examined the reliability of the MRI against a prospective daily investigation over the course of 15 days. As a secondary aim, we examined whether the number of items with a perceived daily pattern correlated with severity of depressive symptoms and psychological well-being.Methods: Thirty-two participants recruited from the general population were asked to prospectively fill out a daily version of the MRI (MRI-d) for 15 days. On the 16th day, they filled out the MRI, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the World Health Organization 5-item well-being index (WHO-5).Results: The MRI showed high agreement with the MRI-d, which suggests that the MRI is a valid tool to assess daily patterns of mood symptoms. The number of mood symptoms perceived as having daily peaks correlated positively with BDI scores and negatively with WHO-5 scores.Conclusions: The MRI might be a valid tool to investigate the presence of daily patterns and the timing of mood-related factors.The MRI does not seem to be influenced by recall or recency biases. Future studies should test the usefulness of this new clinical instrument in individuals with mood disorders, as well as its ability to detect changes in the daily timing of mood symptoms before and after treatment.

Background and objective. Tuberculosis (TB) occurring in immigrants and resistance to drugs are major problems for TB control in Western countries. Directly observed therapy (DOT) reduces disease transmission, but this approach may have poor results among illegal immigrants. Our aim was to evaluate a prolonged hospitalisation programme to improve early outcome of TB treatment in high risk patients. Methods. All the consecutive adult patients with sputum smear-positive pulmonary TB admitted to 2 Italian referral TB Centres were evaluated. Hospital-based DOT was provided to high risk patients up-to smear conversion. Demographic, microbiological and clinical conditions, as potential factors associated with confirmed smear conversion at 60 and 90 days of anti-tuberculous therapy were evaluated. Results. 122 patients were studied, 45.9% of them were immigrants (20% illegal) from high-prevalence TB countries. HIV testing was negative in all cases. Twelve patients had M. tuberculosis resistant to ≥ 1 first-line anti-tuberculous agents. The rate of defaulting from TB treatment was 7.3%. Sputum smear became negative in 84.4% cases after 60 days and 93.3% cases after 90 days. At such time, smear conversion rates were similar among different high risk subgroups such as illegal immigrants (95.9%), legal foreign-born (92.5%) and Italian persons (94.8%). In this work, we consider an Om diagnostic using a non-parametric reconstruction by employing the Loess–Simex factory. This procedure allows us to perform a model-independent comparison for w(z) with the astrophysical data. The concordance model can be tested with the advantage that our approach represents an alternative and efficient way to relax the use of priors and find a possible w that reliably describes the data with no previous knowledge of a cosmological model.

We report a morphological and biochemical analysis on the presence, distribution and quantification of vasotocin in the hypothalamus and limbic region of the budgerigar Melopsittacus undulatus, using immunohistochemistry on serial sections and competitive enzyme linked immunoadsorbent assay measurements on tissue extracts. Analysis of the sections showed large vasotocin-immunoreactive neurons in three main regions of the diencephalon, of both male and female specimens. Vasotocinergic cell bodies were located in the ventral and lateral areas of the hypothalamus, dorsal to the lateral thalamus and medial to the nucleus geniculatus lateralis. Immunoreactive neurons were placed also periventricularly, close to the walls of the third ventricle, at the level of the magnocellular paraventricular nucleus.Well evident bundles of immunoreactive fibers were placed ventral to the anterior commissure in the same regions of the hypothalamus and thalamus where vasotocinergic perikarya are localized. Fibers were identified close to the third ventricle, and in the lateral hypothalamic area along the lateral forebrain bundle. In contrast to what reported for other oscine and non-oscine avian species, we were not able to identify immunopositive neurons in any region above the anterior commissure, or detect relevant differences on the distribution of the vasotocin immmunoreactivity between sexes. Competitive enzyme linked immunoadsorption assay and image analysis of the extension of immunoreactivity in the tissue sections were consistent with the qualitative observations and indicated that there is no statistically significant dimorphism in the content of vasotocin or in the location and distribution of vasotocinergic elements in the investigated areas of male and female parrot brains.

The SNe type Ia data admit that the universe today may be dominated by some exotic matter with negative pressure violating all energy conditions. Such exotic matter is called phantom matterdue to the anomalies connected with violation of the energy conditions. If a phantom matter dominates the matter content of the universe, it can develop a singularity in a finite future proper time. Here we show that, under certain conditions, the evolution of perturbations of this matter may lead to avoidance of this future singularity (the big rip). At the same time, we show that local concentrations of a phantom field may form, among other regular configurations, black holes with asymptotically flat static regions, separated by an event horizon from an expanding, singularity-free, asymptotically de Sitter universe. The possibility that the present acceleration of the Universe is driven by a kind of viscous fluid is exploited. At background level this model is similar to the generalized Chaplygin gas model (GCGM). But, at the perturbative level, the viscous fluid exhibits interesting properties. In a Bohmian quantum cosmology scenario, we investigate some quantum effects on the evolution of the primordial universe arising from the adoption of an alternative non-trivial ordering to the quantization of the constrained Hamiltonian of a minimally coupled scalar field. The Wheeler–DeWitt equation has a contribution from the change in factor ordering, hence there are new quantum effects. We compare the results between the non-trivial and the trivial ordering cases, showing that the classical limit is valid for both orderings, but new bouncing and cyclic solutions are present in the non-trivial case. Additionally, we show that the non-singular solutions already present in the trivial ordering formalism keep valid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we analyze Abelian–Higgs strings in a phenomenological model that takes quantum effects in curved space–time into account. This model, first introduced by Rastall, cannot be derived from an action principle. We formulate phenomenological equations of motion under the guiding principle of minimal possible deformation of the standard equations. We construct string solutions that asymptote to a flat space–time with a deficit angle by solving the set of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations numerically. Decreasing the Rastall parameter from its Einstein gravity value, we find that the deficit angle of the space–time increases and becomes equal to at some critical value of this parameter that depends on the remaining couplings in the model. For smaller values, the resulting solutions are supermassive string solutions possessing a singularity at a finite distance from the string core. Assuming the Higgs boson mass to be on the order of the gauge boson mass, we also find that in Rastall gravity this happens only when the symmetry breaking scale is on the order of the Planck mass. We observe that for specific values of the parameters in the model, the energy per unit length becomes proportional to the winding number, i.e. the degree of the map . Unlike in the Bogomolnyi–Prasad–Sommerfield (BPS) limit in Einstein gravity, this is, however, not connected to an underlying mathematical structure, but rather constitutes a would-be-BPS bound. Objective: Using a multistep machine-learning procedure, add virtual continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) traces to the original sparse data of the landmark Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT). Assess the association of CGM metrics with the microvascular complications of type 1 diabetes observed during the DCCT and establish time-in-range (TIR) as a viable marker of glycemic control. Research Design and Methods: Utilizing the DCCT glycated hemoglobin data obtained every 1 or 3 months plus quarterly 7-point blood glucose (BG) profiles in a multistep procedure: (i) utilized archival BG traces to model interday BG variability and estimate glycated hemoglobin; (ii) trained across the DCCT BG profiles and associated each profile with an archival BG trace; and (iii) used previously identified CGM "motifs" to associate a CGM trace to a BG trace, for each DCCT participant. Results: TIR (70-180 mg/dL) computed from virtual CGM data over 14 days prior to each glycated hemoglobin measurement reproduced the observed glycemic control differences between the intensive and conventional DCCT groups, with TIR generally >60% and <40% in these groups, respectively. Similar to glycated hemoglobin, TIR was associated with the risk of development or progression of retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy (all P -values <0.0001). Poisson regressions indicated that TIR predicted retinopathy and microalbuminuria similarly to the original glycated hemoglobin data. Conclusions: The landmark DCCT was revisited using contemporary data science methods, which allowed adding individual CGM traces to the original data. Fourteen-day CGM metrics predicted microvascular diabetes complications similarly to glycated hemoglobin. Clinical Trials Registration: Not a clinical trial.

With increasing prevalence of obesity and cardiovascular diseases, there is a growing interest in the use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) as an adjunct therapy in type 1 diabetes (T1D). The GLP-1RAs are currently not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of T1D in the absence of randomized controlled trials documenting efficacy and safety of these agents in this population. The Diabetes Technology Society convened a series of three consensus meetings of clinicians and researchers with expertise in diabetes technology, GLP-1RA therapy, and T1D management. The project was aimed at synthesizing current literature and providing conclusions on the use of GLP-1RA therapy as an adjunct to automated insulin delivery (AID) systems in adults with T1D. The expert panel members met virtually three times on January 17, 2024, and April 24, 2024, and August 14, 2024, to discuss topics ranging from physiology and outcomes of GLP-1RAs in T1D to limitations of current sensors, algorithms, and insulin for AID systems. The panelists also identified research gaps and future directions for research. The panelists voted to in favor of 31 recommendations. Introduction: An error grid compares measured versus reference glucose concentrations to assign clinical risk values to observed errors. Widely used error grids for blood glucose monitors (BGMs) have limited value because they do not also reflect clinical accuracy of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs)., Methods: Diabetes Technology Society (DTS) convened 89 international experts in glucose monitoring to (1) smooth the borders of the Surveillance Error Grid (SEG) zones and create a user-friendly tool-the DTS Error Grid; (2) define five risk zones of clinical point accuracy (A-E) to be identical for BGMs and CGMs; (3) determine a relationship between DTS Error Grid percent in Zone A and mean absolute relative difference (MARD) from analyzing 22 BGM and nine CGM accuracy studies; and (4) create trend risk categories (1-5) for CGM trend accuracy., Results: The DTS Error Grid for point accuracy contains five risk zones (A-E) with straight-line borders that can be applied to both BGM and CGM accuracy data. In a data set combining point accuracy data from 18 BGMs, 2.6% of total data pairs equally moved from Zones A to B and vice versa (SEG compared with DTS Error Grid). For every 1% increase in percent data in Zone A, the MARD decreased by approximately 0.33%. Introduction: Insulin pump therapy can be adversely affected by interruption of insulin flow, leading to a rise in blood glucose (BG) and subsequently of blood beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) ketone levels., Methods: We performed a PubMed search for English language reports (January 1982 to July 2024) estimating the rate of rise in BG and/or BHB after ≥ 60 minutes of interruption of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) in persons with type 1 diabetes (PwT1D). We also simulated the rise in BG in a virtual population of 100 adults with T1D following suspension of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion., Results: We identified eight relevant studies where BG and BHB (seven of these eight studies) were measured following suspension of CSII as a model for occlusion. After 60 minutes post-suspension, the mean extracted rates of rise averaged 0.62 mg/dL/min (37 mg/dL/h) for BG and 0.0038 mmol/L/min (0.20 mmol/L/h) for BHB. Mean estimated time to moderately/severely elevated BG (300/400 mg/dL) or BHB (1.6/3.0 mmol/L) was, respectively, 5.8/8.5 and 8.0/14.2 hours. The simulation model predicted moderately/severely elevated BG (300/400 mg/dL) after 9.25/12, 6.75/8.75, and 4.75/5.75 hours in the virtual subjects post-interruption with small (5th percentile), medium (50th percentile), and large (95th percentile) hyperglycemic changes., Discussion: Clinical studies and a simulation model similarly predicted that, following CSII interruption, moderate/severe hyperglycemia can occur within 5-9/6-14 hours, and clinical studies predicted that moderate/severe ketonemia can occur within 7-12/13-21 hours. Background: While it is well recognized that an automated insulin delivery (AID) algorithm should adapt to changes in physiology, it is less understood that the individual would also have to adapt to the AID system. The adaptive biobehavioral control (ABC) method presented here attempts to compensate for this deficiency by including AID into an information cloud-based ecosystem. Methods: The Web Information Tool (WIT) implements the ABC concept via the following: (1) a Physiological Adaptation Module (PAM) that tracks metabolic changes and adapts AID parameters accordingly and (2) a Behavioral Adaptation Module (BAM) that provides information feedback. The safety of WIT (primary outcome) was assessed in an 8-week randomized, two-arm parallel pilot study. All participants used the Control-IQ ® AID system enhanced with PAM, but only those in the Experimental group had access to BAM. Secondary glycemic outcomes were computed using the 2-week baseline period and the last 2 weeks of treatment. Results: Thirty participants with type 1 diabetes (T1D) completed all study procedures (17 female/13 male; age: 40 ± 14 years; HbA1c: 6.6% ± 0.5%). No severe hypoglycemia, DKA, or other serious adverse events were reported. Comparing the Experimental and Control groups, no significant difference was observed in time in range (70-180 mg/dL): 74.6% vs 73.8%, adjusted mean difference: 2.65%, 95% CI (-1.12%,6.41%), P = 0.161. Time in 70-140 mg/dL was significantly higher in the Experimental group: 50.7% vs 49.2%, 5.71% (0.44%,10.97%), P = 0.035, without increased time below range: 0.54% (-0.09%,1.17%), P = 0.089. Conclusion: The results demonstrate that it is safe to integrate an AID system into the WIT ecosystem. Validation in a full-scale study is ongoing.

Background: The objective of this work is to document performance of automated insulin delivery (AID) during real-life use in type 2 diabetes (T2D)., Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed of continuous glucose monitoring and insulin delivery data from 796 individuals with T2D, who transitioned from 1-month predictive low-glucose suspend (PLGS) use to 3-month AID use, in real-life settings. Primary outcome was change of time in range (TIR = 70-180 mg/dL) from PLGS to AID. Secondary outcomes included time above/below range (TAR/TBR) and total daily insulin (TDI)., Results: Compared with PLGS, AID increased TIR on average from 63.2% to 72.6%, decreased TAR from 36.2% to 26.8%, and increased TDI from 70.2 to 76.3 U (all P < .001), without significant change to TBR. The tandem CO 2 hydrogenation to hydrocarbons over mixed metal oxide/zeolite catalysts (OXZEO) is an efficient way of producing value-added hydrocarbons (platform chemicals and fuels) directly from CO 2 methanol intermediate in a single reactor. In this contribution, two MAPO-18 zeotypes (M = Mg, Si) were tested and their performance was compared under methanol-to-olefins (MTO) conditions (350 °C, via methanol intermediate in a single reactor. In this contribution, two MAPO-18 zeotypes (M = Mg, Si) were tested and their performance was compared under methanol-to-olefins (MTO) conditions (350 °C, P CH 3 OH = 0.04 bar, 6.5 g CH 3 OH h -1 cofeed conditions (350 °C, -1 ), methanol/CO/H 2 cofeed conditions (350 °C, P CH 3 OH / P CO / P hydrogenation-to-olefin conditions (350 °C, H 2 = 1:7.3:21.7 bar, 2.5 g CH 3 OH h -1 g -1 ), and tandem CO 2 hydrogenation-to-olefin conditions (350 °C, P CO 2 / P H 2 = 7.5:22.5 bar, 1.4-12.0 g MAPO-18 h mol CO 2 -1 ). In the latter case, the zeotypes were mixed with a fixed amount of ZnO:ZrO 2 catalyst, well-known for the conversion of CO 2 /H 2 to methanol. Focus was set on the methanol conversion activity, product selectivity, and performance stability with time-on-stream. In situ and ex situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), sorption experiments, and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations were performed to correlate material performance with material characteristics. The catalytic tests demonstrated the better performance of MgAPO-18 versus SAPO-18 at MTO conditions, the much superior performance of MgAPO-18 under methanol/CO/H 2 cofeeds, and yet the increasingly similar performance of the two materials under tandem conditions upon increasing the zeotype-to-oxide ratio in the tandem catalyst bed. In situ FT-IR measurements coupled with AIMD calculations revealed differences in the MTO initiation mechanism between the two materials. SAPO-18 promoted initial CO 2 formation, indicative of a formaldehyde-based decarboxylation mechanism, while CO and ketene were the main constituents of the initiation pool in MgAPO-18, suggesting a decarbonylation mechanism. Under tandem CO 2 hydrogenation conditions, the presence of high water concentrations and low methanol partial pressure in the reaction medium led to lower, and increasingly similar, methanol turnover frequencies for the zeotypes. Despite both MAPO-18 zeotypes showing signs of activity loss upon storage due to the interaction of the sites with ambient humidity, they presented a remarkable stability after reaching steady state under tandem reaction conditions and after steaming and regeneration cycles at high temperatures. Water adsorption experiments at room temperature confirmed this observation. The faster activity loss observed in the Mg version is assigned to its harder Mg 2+ -ion character and the higher concentration of CHA defects in the AEI structure, identified by solid-state NMR and XRD.
