Experimental measurements and modeling have been performed in the chimney of a biomass boiler to study the gaseous and particulate matter (PM) emissions during the combustion of wood pellets. A 10 kW boiler with an underfeed burner is equipped with different sensors located in the chimney (anemometer, thermocouples). The PM emissions were measured in the chimney through the engine exhaust particle sizer (EEPS) technique. Moreover, the gaseous emissions (CO2, CO, total hydrocarbons THC, O2) were obtained through infrared (IR) spectroscopy and flame ionization detector (FID). The emissions were recorded during the steady phase of the boiler and averaged over several tests. Four locations were investigated in the chimney to evaluate the evolution of the particle size and the potential deposition on the surface. The experimental results were compared with a CFD model with particle transportation. The modeling of turbulent flow in the chimney is based on a Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) approach with turbulent viscosity closure. To account for flow anisotropy, the v2¯−f turbulence model was selected for this study. The effect of turbulent fluctuations on the discrete phase is considered by the discrete random walk (DRW) turbulent dispersion model. The results obtained provide access to the topology of the carrier phase flow as well as the complete distribution of the particle field within the chimney enclosure. Advanced measurement of pollutant emissions and modeling of the PM transportation are developed for the first time in a domestic biomass boiler operating in real conditions. Experimental results demonstrate several relevant information. The CO and THC emissions show a similar evolution versus time. The PM granulometric distribution measured along the chimney highlights the particle agglomeration phenomena. Moreover, the CFD model and experimental results give similar results in terms of flow characteristics and PM granulometry.

The paper presents an experimental study and a 0D dynamic modeling of a biomass boiler based on the Bond Graph formalism from mass and energy balance. The biomass boiler investigated in this study is an automatic pellet boiler with a nominal power of 30 kW with a fixed bed. The balances allow to model as time function the flue gas enthalpy flux variation and the thermal transfers between the flue gas and the walls of the boiler subsystems. The main objective is to build a model to represent the dynamic thermal behavior of the boiler. Indeed, small domestic boilers have discontinuous operating phases when the set temperature is reached. The global thermal transfer coefficients for the boiler subsystems are obtained according to an iterative calculation by inverse method. The boiler has an average efficiency of 67.5% under our operating conditions and the radiation is the dominant thermal transfer by reaching 97.6% of the total thermal transfers inside the combustion chamber. The understanding of the dynamic behavior of the boiler during the operating phases allows to evaluate its energy performances. The proposed model is both stimulated and validated using experimental results carried out on the boiler.

In this paper, a comparison of exergetic models between two hot air engines (a Gamma type Stirling prototype having a maximum output mechanical power of 500 W and an Ericsson hot air engine with a maximum power of 300 W) is made. Referring to previous energetic analyses, exergetic models are set up in order to quantify the exergy destruction and efficiencies in each type of engine. The repartition of the exergy fluxes in each part of the two engines are determined and represented in Sankey diagrams, using dimensionless exergy fluxes. The results show a similar proportion in both engines of destroyed exergy compared to the exergy flux from the hot source. The compression cylinders generate the highest exergy destruction, whereas the expansion cylinders generate the lowest one. The regenerator of the Stirling engine increases the exergy resource at the inlet of the expansion cylinder, which might be also set up in the Ericsson engine, using a preheater between the exhaust air and the compressed air transferred to the hot heat exchanger.

A specific heat exchanger has been developed to transfer heat from flue gas to the working fluid (hot air) of the Ericsson engine of a solid biomass-fuelled micro combined heat and power (CHP). In this paper, the theoretical and experimental energetic analyses of this heat exchanger are compared. The experimental performances are described considering energetic and exergetic parameters, in particular the effectiveness on both hot and cold sides. A new exergetic parameter called the exergetic effectiveness is introduced, which allows a comparison between the real and the ideal heat exchanger considering the Second Law of Thermodynamics. A global analysis of exergetic fluxes in the whole micro-CHP system is presented, showing the repartition of the exergy destruction among the components.

Background: While many studies analyze the functions that images can fulfill during humanitarian crises or catastrophes, an understanding of how meaning is constructed in text⁻image relationships is lacking. This article explores how discourses are produced using different types of text⁻image interactions. It presents a case study focusing on a humanitarian crisis, more specifically the sexual transmission of Ebola. 2. Methods: Data were processed both quantitatively and qualitatively through a keyword-based selection. Tweets containing an image were retrieved from a database of 210,600 tweets containing the words “Ebola„ and “semen„, in English and in French, over the course of 12 months. When this first selection was crossed with the imperative of focusing on a specific thematic (the sexual transmission of Ebola) and avoiding off-topic text⁻image relationships, it led to reducing the corpus to 182 tweets. 3. Results: The article proposes a four-category classification of text⁻image relationships. Theoretically, it provides original insights into how discourses are built in social media; it also highlights the semiotic significance of images in expressing an opinion or an emotion. 4. Conclusion: The results suggest that the process of signification needs to be rethought: Content enhancement and dialogism through images have a bearing on Twitter’s use as a public sphere, such as credibilization of discourses or politicization of events. This opens the way to a new, more comprehensive approach to the rhetorics of users on Twitter.

Correct gene expression requires tight RNA quality control both at transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. Using a splicing-defective allele of PASTICCINO2 (PAS2), a gene essential for plant development, we isolated suppressor mutations modifying pas2-1 mRNA profiles and restoring wild-type growth. Three suppressor of pas2 (sop) mutations modified the degradation of mis-spliced pas2-1 mRNA species, allowing the synthesis of a functional protein. Cloning of the suppressor mutations identified the core subunit of the exosome SOP2/RRP4, the exosome nucleoplasmic cofactor SOP3/HEN2 and a novel zinc-finger protein SOP1 that colocalizes with HEN2 in nucleoplasmic foci. The three SOP proteins counteract post-transcriptional (trans)gene silencing (PTGS), which suggests that they all act in RNA quality control. In addition, sop1 mutants accumulate some, but not all of the misprocessed mRNAs and other types of RNAs that are observed in exosome mutants. Taken together, our data show that SOP1 is a new component of nuclear RNA surveillance that is required for the degradation of a specific subset of nuclear exosome targets.

Very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) are involved in plant development and particularly in several cellular processes such as membrane trafficking, cell division and cell differentiation. However, the precise role of VLCFAs in these different cellular processes is still poorly understood in plants. In order to identify new factors associated with the biosynthesis or function of VLCFAs, a yeast multicopy suppressor screen was carried out in a yeast mutant strain defective for fatty acid elongation. Loss of function of the elongase 3 hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydratase PHS1 in yeast and PASTICCINO2 in plants prevents growth and induces cytokinesis defects. PROTEIN TYROSIN PHOSPHATASE-LIKE (PTPLA) previously characterized as an inactive dehydratase was able to restore yeast phs1 growth and VLCFAs elongation but not the plant pas2-1 defects. PTPLA interacted with elongase subunits in the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) and its absence induced the accumulation of 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA as expected from a dehydratase involved in fatty acid (FA) elongation. However, loss of PTPLA function increased VLCFA levels, an effect that was dependent on the presence of PAS2 indicating that PTPLA activity repressed FA elongation. The two dehydratases have specific expression profiles in the root with PAS2, mostly restricted to the endodermis, while PTPLA was confined in the vascular tissue and pericycle cells. Comparative ectopic expression of PTPLA and PAS2 in their respective domains confirmed the existence of two independent elongase complexes based on PAS2 or PTPLA dehydratase that are functionally interacting.
