Abstract

Superconducting qubits have arisen as a leading technology platform for quantum computing, which is on the verge of revolutionizing the world's calculation capacities. Nonetheless, the fabrication of computationally reliable qubit circuits requires increasing the quantum coherence lifetimes, which are predominantly limited by the dissipations of two-level system defects present in the thin superconducting film and the adjacent dielectric regions. In this paper, we demonstrate the reduction of two-level system losses in three-dimensional superconducting radio frequency niobium resonators by atomic layer deposition of a 10 nm aluminum oxide Al2O3 thin films, followed by a high vacuum heat treatment at 650 °C for few hours. By probing the effect of several heat treatments on Al2O3-coated niobium samples by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy plus scanning and conventional high resolution transmission electron microscopy coupled with electron energy loss spectroscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, we witness a dissolution of niobium native oxides and the modification of the Al2O3-Nb interface, which correlates with the enhancement of the quality factor at low fields of two 1.3 GHz niobium cavities coated with 10 nm of Al2O3. Abstract

A material allowing for rapid and reliable formation of nanopatterned surfaces is an important issue in many areas of science today. Self-organized pattern formation induced by ion erosion is a promising bottom-up approach. In the case of the III-V semiconductors, this method can lead to several remarkable structure types even if the formation mechanism has yet to be found. Through high resolution chemical scanning, transmission electron imaging, and x-ray photo emission, we show through an investigation of GaSb that the capacity of III-V semiconductors to pattern under ion erosion is linked to the phase diagram of these materials. We suggest an original scenario to explain the specific behavior of III-V semiconductors, where one species segregates and acts as a continuously resupplied etching shield. This concept is at variance with the standard Bradley–Harper model and opens interesting perspectives for bottom-up patterning of compound materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A facile and eco-friendly method was developed to prepare a microporous CuO@Ag0 core–shell with high catalytic and antibacterial activities. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed a preponderance of nearly spherical 50 nm particles with slight structure compaction. Comparison of the hysteresis loops confirmed the structure compaction after AgNP incorporation, and a significant decrease of the specific surface area from 55.31 m2 g−1 for CuO to 8.03 m2 g−1 for CuO@Ag0 was noticed. A kinetic study of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction into 4-aminophenol (4-AP) with sodium borohydride revealed a first order reaction that produces total conversion in less than 18 minutes. CuO@Ag0 also exhibited appreciable antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. The antibacterial effects were found to strongly depend on the size, contact surface, morphology and chemical composition of the catalyst particles. The addition of Ag0-NPs produced more reactive oxygen species in the bacteria medium. These results open promising prospects for its potential applications as a low cost catalyst in wastewater treatment and antibacterial agent in cosmetics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
