Abstract The goal of this study was to gather information about freshwater fishes in Letchworth State Park (42.615275° N, −77.992825° W), a portion of New York State‐owned land located in the Genesee River Watershed that lacks known data about its fish diversity. Fish collection took place between 2017 and 2019 in the Genesse River upstream and downstream of the falls using electrofishing, gill, hoop, and seine netting. This was the first attempt at a comprehensive survey of this portion of the river, which allowed for a baseline to be established regarding fish biodiversity in the region. The updated total number of species found in this portion of the Genesee River was 25, 22 of which were newly identified downstream of the falls in Letchworth State Park. We encourage further collection and continuation of this survey with consistent sampling techniques to raise awareness about the importance of freshwater fish diversity in stream ecosystems across the globe.

This article considers interactions between environmental law and cultural practices in Southern China by way of a trans-cultural and critical-historical perspective of carbon: through examining the impact of top-down, future-oriented environmental protection policies, their impact on the present energy situation surrounding vernacular heritage on the ground, and the ways in which they may be managed given the cultural past reflected by built heritage. Forests that have been a hotbed for experimentation (not only as a surplus but also as a spiritual landscape) have given rise to heritage vernacular buildings in Fujian Province. The energy used in the production of these heritage buildings is embedded within an environmental conscience. Before carbon as a concept emerged, judgment of buildings was based on culturally accepted principles (originating from treatises in which energy was intertwined with religion) rather than regulations. However today, following uncontrolled deforestation and a deluge of related laws, the policies have cut the vital link between vernacular settlements and forests. A 49-year-old female six days post-endometrial biopsy presented to the emergency department with constant severe suprapubic abdominal pain, fevers and myalgia. A contrasted computed tomography noted an intrauterine fluid collection and a final diagnosis of pyometra was made in the operating room following total hysterectomy. Pyometra is an exceptionally rare clinical condition with significant mortality.

The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) (2014) sets forth that children learning science and engineering practices in the early years lays "the foundation for a progression of science learning in K-12 settings and throughout their entire lives." So, it is important to build upon children's natural curiosities and expose them to thinking like engineers early on and long before college. The Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) lesson plan presented in this article about matter was co-taught to a gifted and talented fifth-grade class by a university professor and an elementary classroom teacher. Collaboration among experts across fields resulted in the lesson design and incorporated science (metals and their properties), technology (using and understanding technology systems), engineering (the engineering design process), art (sculpture), and math (data and proportionality). The lesson resulted in students' greater understanding of matter (metals) through the roles of engineers and artists. The engineering aspect of this STEAM lessons lends itself well to fostering understanding of solid matter (such as metals) and its interactions.

Cyanoacrylate fuming is a process by which latent prints are visualized on non-porous surfaces (Yamashita and French, 2011). Following the polymerization of cyanoacrylate molecules on top of a latent print, RAM, a fluorescent dye stain, is applied to further visualize the print with a forensic light source (Yamashita and French, 2011). There are situations in which the FBI’s Hazardous Evidence Analysis Team (HEAT) is prohibited from using adequate amounts of RAM, thereby establishing a need to find an effective substitute. This study tested the efficacy of using Lumicyano™ products in conjunction with the CYANO-SHOT™ products already used by HEAT to develop latent prints that fluoresce under forensic light sources without RAM application. Testing demonstrated that Lumicyano™ products used in conjunction with CYANO-SHOT™ products were effective at developing latent prints.

Introduction: Ferric citrate (FC) is an FDA-approved iron-based phosphate binder for adults with dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease. This study investigated the impact of FC as the primary phosphate-lowering therapy on utilization of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) and intravenous (IV) iron. Methods: In this randomized, open-label, active-controlled, multicenter study (NCT04922645), patients on dialysis and receiving ESAs were randomized to receive FC or remain on standard of care (SOC) phosphate-lowering therapy for up to 6 months. Primary endpoints were the difference in change from baseline to efficacy evaluation period (EEP) in mean monthly ESA and IV iron doses. Secondary endpoints included treatment differences in hemoglobin, phosphate, TSAT, and ferritin levels. Results: Two hundred nine patients were randomized to FC and had a day 1 dosing visit (n = 103) or SOC (n = 106). The two groups had similar baseline laboratory characteristics; however, atherosclerotic CV disease, peripheral vascular disease, and congestive heart failure were more common in the SOC group. The mean treatment difference in ESA monthly dose was −30.8 μg (FC vs. SOC; p = 0.02). An absolute though non-statistically significant change in mean monthly IV iron dose of −37.2 mg (p = 0.17) was observed with FC. Mean hemoglobin, TSAT, and ferritin all increased from baseline to the EEP with FC versus SOC. Serious adverse events occurred in 28% of patients receiving FC versus 37% in those receiving SOC. Conclusions: In patients receiving dialysis, treatment with FC as compared to remaining on SOC phosphate binders resulted in reductions in mean monthly ESA and IV iron dose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Improving the efficiency of photo-electrocatalytic cells depends on controlling the rates of interfacial electron transfer to promote the formation of long-lived charge separated states. Ultimately, for efficient catalytic assemblies to see widespread implementation, repeated electron transfer in the absence of charge recombination needs to be realized. In this study, a series of manganese-based transition metal complexes known to undergo charge transfer-induced spin crossover are employed to study how significant increases in inner-sphere reorganization energy affect the rates of interfacial electron transfer. Each complex is characterized by transient spectroscopic and electrochemical methods to calculate the rate of electron transfer to a model chromophore anchored to the surface of a TiO2 film. Likewise, open-circuit voltage decay measurements were used to determine the voltage-dependent lifetime of injected electrons in TiO2 in the presence of each complex. To further characterize the rates of electronic recombination, density functional theory was used to calculate the inner-sphere and outer-sphere reorganization energy for each complex. These calculations were then combined with classical Marcus theory to determine the theoretical rate of back-electron transfer from the TiO2 conduction band. These results show that, in model complexes, a significant reduction in the recombination rate constant is achieved for complexes possessing a significant inner-sphere reorganization energy. Desquamative inflammatory vaginitis is a poorly understood chronic vaginitis with an unknown etiology. Symptoms of desquamative inflammatory vaginitis include copious yellowish discharge, vulvovaginal discomfort, and dyspareunia. Cervical ectropion, the presence of glandular columnar cells on the ectocervix, has not been reported as a cause of desquamative inflammatory vaginitis. Although cervical ectropion can be a normal clinical finding, it has been reported to cause leukorrhea, metrorrhagia, dyspareunia, and vulvovaginal irritation. Patients with cervical ectropion and desquamative inflammatory vaginitis are frequently misdiagnosed with candidiasis or bacterial vaginosis and repeatedly treated without resolution of symptoms. We report the case of a 34-year-old woman with a 4-year history of profuse yellowish discharge and dyspareunia. Upon presentation, her symptoms and laboratory results met the criteria for desquamative inflammatory vaginitis, but the standard treatments did not provide long-lasting relief. As a last resort, cryotherapy (cryosurgery) of her cervix was performed for treatment of her cervical ectropion, which provided complete resolution of her symptoms. In the title complex, C17H12N2, the non-aromatic six-membered ring adopts an envelope conformation. The dihedral angle between the eight-membered plane containing the malononitrile group and the aromatic system is 25.88 (4)°. The distance from the central C atom of the malononitrile group to the centroid of the n-glide-related distal aromatic ring is 3.66 Å, suggesting π–π interactions.
