The effects of dietary crude glycerin on growth performance, carcass characteristics, meat quality indices, and tissue histology in growing pigs were determined in a 138-d feeding trial. Crude glycerin utilized in the trial contained 84.51% glycerin, 11.95% water, 2.91% sodium chloride, and 0.32% methanol. Eight days postweaning, 96 pigs (48 barrows and 48 gilts, average BW of 7.9 [+ or -] 0.4 kg) were allotted to 24 pens (4 pigs/pen), with sex and BW balanced at the start of the experiment. Dietary treatments were 0, 5, and 10% crude glycerin inclusion in corn-soybean meal-based diets and were randomly assigned to pens. Diets were offered ad libitum in meal form and formulated to be equal in ME, sodium, chloride, and Lys, with other AA balanced on an ideal AA basis. Pigs and feeders were weighed every other week to determine ADG, ADFI, and G:F. At the end of the trial, all pigs were scanned using real-time ultrasound and subsequently slaughtered at a commercial abattoir. Blood samples were collected pretransport and at the time of slaughter for plasma metabolite analysis. In addition, kidney, liver, and eye tissues were collected for subsequent examination for lesions characteristic of methanol toxicity. After an overnight chilling of the carcass, loins were removed for meat quality, sensory evaluation, and fatty acid profile analysis. Pig growth, feed intake, and G:F were not affected by dietary treatment. Dietary treatment did not affect 10th-rib backfat, LM area, percent fat free lean, meat quality, or sensory evaluation. Loin ultimate pH was increased (P = 0.06) in pigs fed the 5 and 10% crude glycerin compared with pigs fed no crude glycerin (5.65 and 5.65 versus 5.57, respectively). Fatty acid profile of the LM was slightly changed by diet with the LM from pigs fed 10% crude glycerin having less linoleic acid (P < 0.01) and more eicosapentaenoic acid (P = 0.02) than pigs fed the 0 or 5% crude glycerin diets. Dietary treatment did not affect blood metabolites or frequency of lesions in the examined tissues. This experiment demonstrated that pigs can be fed up to 10% crude glycerin with no effect on pig performance, carcass composition, meat quality, or lesion scores. The apparent DE and ME values of crude glycerol for growing pigs were determined in 5 experiments using crude glycerol (86.95% glycerol) from a biodiesel production facility, which used soybean oil as the initial feedstock. Dietary treatments were 0, 5, or 10% glycerol addition to basal diets in Exp. 1; 0, 5, 10, or 20% glycerol addition to basal diets in Exp. 2; and 0 and 10% crude glycerol addition to the basal diets in Exp. 3, 4, and 5. Each diet was fed twice daily to pigs in individual metabolism crates. After a 10-d adjustment period, a 5-d balance trial was conducted. During the collection period, feces and urine were collected separately after each meal and stored at 0[degrees]C until analyses. The GE of each dietary treatment and samples of urine and feces from each pig were determined by isoperibol bomb calorimetry. Digestible energy of the diet was calculated by subtracting fecal energy from the GE in the feed, whereas ME was calculated by subtracting the urinary energy from DE. The DE and ME values of crude glycerol were estimated as the slope of the linear relationship between either DE or ME intake from the experimental diet and feed intake. Among all experiments, the crude glycerol (86.95% glycerol) examined in this study was shown to have a DE of 3,344 [+ or -] 8 kcal/kg and an ME of 3,207 [+ or -] 10 kcal/kg, thereby providing a highly available energy source for growing pigs. Corn kernel composition may affect its nutritive value and, thus, pig growth performance and carcass characteristics. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of the chemical and physical traits of corn kernels from different hybrids on the growth performance and carcass characteristics of pigs. A total of 288 crossbred pigs were grown in a 3-phase program from 21 kg of BW until slaughter at 113 kg of BW with 12 pens (4 pigs/pen) per dietary treatment. Target BW for each phase were 20 to 40 kg (grower 1), 40 to 80 kg (grower 2), and 80 to 120 kg (finisher). In each phase, diets were formulated to be marginally deficient in Lys, TSAA, Ca, Na, and nonphytate P to improve the likelihood of detecting differences in performance due to corn hybrid. Each of 6 corn hybrids represented a wide range of kernel chemical and physical traits and was substituted for corn in a common diet formulation on an equal weight basis to make the 6 dietary treatments. Physical and chemical composition of the kernels were analyzed and correlated with performance measures by multivariate ANOVA. Kernel density was correlated with i.m. fat (IMF) content in LM (r = -0.35, P < 0.05). Stenvert grinding time was correlated (P < 0.05) with ADG during the grower 1 phase (r = 0.26), ADFI during the grower 2 phase (r = 0.27), final BW (r = 0.27), and IMF (r = -0.36). The amylose content of the cornstarch was correlated (P < 0.05) with ADG during the grower 2 phase (r = -0.28) and with BW at the end of the grower 2 phase (r = -0.27). The NDF content of the kernels was correlated (P < 0.05) with ADG during the finisher phase (r = -0.30), final BW (r = -0.33), and number of days to market (r = 0.31). The ADF content of the kernels was correlated (P < 0.05) with ADG during the grower 1 phase (r = -0.26), final BW (r = -0.26), and IMF (r = 0.31). The correlations of performance measure variation with individual kernel hybrid physical and chemical traits were statistically significant yet not large enough to base corn hybrid selection for feeding pigs on any single kernel chemical or physical trait. Early-weaned pigs (n = 64) averaging 5.3 [+ or -] 0.3 kg and distributed into two environments (dirty and clean) were used to evaluate effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on growth performance, immune competence, and empty body composition. A factorial (2 x 4) arrangement within a split-plot design, with four littermate pigs as the experimental unit for the environment, pig within litter as the experimental unit for dietary treatment, and d-0 body weight used as covariate, were used in data analysis. Diets were formulated to contain CLA at 0, 0.67, 1.33, or 2% and to exceed the NRC (1988) nutrient needs of pigs. Animals were given ad libitum access to feed for 7 wk in three phases (I, 1 to 2; II, 3 to 5; and III, 6 to 7 wk). Within phases, diets were isocaloric and isonitrogenous. In Phase I, as dietary CLA concentration increased, ADG and ADFI decreased linearly (P [is less than] 0.05 and P [is less than] 0.02, respectively). In Phase II, upon adaptation to dietary CLA supplementation, ADG increased quadratically (603, 623, 622, and 548 g/d; P [is less than] 0.01), ADFI decreased linearly (873, 840, 867, and 717 g/d; P [is less than] 0.02) and gain:feed ratio tended to increase linearly (691, 742, 715, and 763; P [is less than] 0.07). In Phase III, no differences in growth performance were attributed to either dietary or environmental treatments. The poor health status associated with the dirty environment induced a growth suppression; pigs in the clean room had a greater cumulative ADG (P [is less than] 0.01) and ADFI (P [is less than] 0.01) than pigs in the dirty room. In Phase I, lower plasma urea nitrogen levels observed in pigs found in the dirty room (P [is less than] 0.03) indicated a lower protein intake caused by a lower ADFI. The effects of dietary CLA on peripheral phenotypic profiles of lymphoytes did not appear until d 42. However, as indicated by the growth suppression of pigs in the dirty room, the negative effects of the environmental challenge on pig health and growth had already appeared during phase I. On d 42, CLA induced a linear increase in percentages of [CD8.sup.+] lymphocytes (21.7, 22.3, 28.0, and 32.7%; P [is less than] 0.001). These data suggest that a 42-d dietary CLA supplementation preceding a disease challenge could have prevented disease-associated growth suppression. Also, CLA-mediated amelioration of particular infectious diseases will depend on which [CD8.sup.+] T cell subset (i.e., CD8[Alpha][Alpha]-immu-noregulatory or CD8[Alpha][Beta]-cytotoxic) is most influenced by dietary CLA supplementation. Low-CP diets result in inferior growth performance in both pigs and broiler chicks even though the dietary AA levels meet established requirements. Essential and non-essential crystalline AA (EAA and NEAA, respectively) have been added in various amounts and combinations to low-CP diets in attempts to overcome the growth retardation, albeit to no avail. An experiment was conducted to investigate whether the molecular form of dietary protein influences growth performance of broiler chicks. A total of 240 day-old broiler chicks was fed a common cornsoy diet (23% CP) for 1 wk, after which the chicks were allotted to one of four treatment diets in a completely randomized design (10 chicks per pen, 6 replications). Chicks had free access to feed and water in floor pens and were fed the isoenergetic treatment diets for 2 wk. Treatment diets consisted of a cornsoy diet (D1, 23% CP) and a similar diet, D2, where some of the intact protein was replaced with crystalline EAA and NEAA on a true ileal-digestible basis. The contents of all EAA and all NEAA in D2 were identical to those in D1, differing only in the molecular form of the dietary protein: All protein in D1 was from intact protein, whereas about half the protein in D2 was from crystalline AA. D3 (17% CP) was similar to D2, but with no crystalline NEAA added. Feed disappearance and BW were measured weekly and feed utilization (G:F) calculated. Data were analyzed using GLM and least-squares treatment means were separated using Fishers protected LSD. All diets resulted in different growth performance responses (P < 0.001) with ADG of 42.4, 36.6, and 29.6 g/d; ADFI of 58.4, 53.6, and 51.0 g/d; and G:F of 0.73, 0.68, and 0.58 for D1, D2, and D3, respectively. Differences in feed utilization between chicks fed D1 and D2 indicated that the molecular form of the dietary protein (i.e., intact protein vs free AA) influenced the utilization of the diets. Omission of crystalline NEAA affected growth performance, indicating that nitrogen may be limiting in low-CP diets or that some NEAA may be conditionally essential. Glutamine (Gln) and asparagine (Asn), which have been shown to be conditionally essential and to improve feed utilization in weanling pigs, are inherently low in low-CP diets. An experiment was, therefore, conducted to investigate whether dietary additions of Gln and Asn influence growth performance and nitrogen (N) retention of broiler chicks fed low-CP diets. A total of 240 day-old broiler chicks was fed a common cornsoy diet (23% CP) for 1 wk after which the chicks were allotted to one of four diets in a completely randomized design (10 chicks per pen, 6 replications). Chicks had free access to feed and water in floor pens. All diets were isoenergetic and formulated on a true ileal-digestible AA basis to meet or exceed all NRC requirements. Treatment diets consisted of a cornsoy diet (control, D1, 23.4% CP) and a low-CP diet (D2, 19.2% CP) with 1% triammonium citrate (TAC) included. D3 (19.3% CP) and D4 (18.9% CP) were formulated as D2 with Gln and Asn, respectively, replacing TAC. Feed disappearance and BW were measured weekly and feed utilization (G:F) calculated. After 2 wk on test, chicks were fasted for 24 hours and two chicks per pen were euthanized and the whole-body N content determined. Data were analyzed using GLM and least-squares treatment means were separated using Fishers protected LSD. No differences in growth performance (P > 0.21) or N retention (P > 0.80) were observed among chicks fed the low-CP diets (D2, D3, and D4). Contrasts (low-CP diets vs D1) were, therefore, used to separate the effects of dietary CP level. Chicks fed the low-CP diets had inferior (P < 0.05) ADC (44.6 vs 46.8 g/d), ADFI (65.2 vs 63.2 g/d), G:F (0.68 vs 0.74), and N retention (1.16 vs 1.23 g/d) compared to chicks fed the high-CP diet. Ammonia (NH3) emissions from laying hens are affected by nutrient content of the diet, manure quantity, and manure properties such as moisture content, nitrogen content, and pH. These production traits may vary with strain of the hen. However, limited information is available concerning the effects of laying-hen genetics on manure properties and NH3 emission. This study was conducted to comparatively quantify production performance, manure properties, and NH3 emissions (through N mass balance) of four white-egg-laying strains (Hy-Line W-36, Hy-Line W-98, Lohmann LSL Lite, and Bovans White) and four brown-egg-laying strains (Hy-Line Brown, Lohmann Brown, ISA Brown, and Bovans Brown) during two production periods of 27-28 weeks (PI) and 35-36 weeks (P2) of age. The diets were formulated to meet the nutritional needs of the brown and white hens. As a result, crude protein contents during PI and P2 were, respectively, 13.2% and 15.2% for the brown hens but 14.5% and 17.4% for the white hens. The results showed that the brown and white hens had similar hen-day egg production (97.5% to 89.2% for brown hens and 96.0% to 88.2% for white hens) and egg mass output (57.1 to 52.6 g d-1 hen-1 for brown hens and 55.6 to 51.2 g d-1 hen-1 for white hens) but different feed consumption (112 to 98 g d-1 hen-1 for brown hens and 101 to 93 g d-1 hen-1 for white hens, p < 0.01) and feed efficiency (1.97 to 1.87 g feed g-1 egg for brown hens and 1.82 g feed g-1 egg for white hens, p < 0.0001 and p = 0.11). The higher feed consumption for the brown hens stemmed from their heavier body mass (1.81 to 1.78 kg vs. 1.56 to 1.53 kg for white hens). Manure moisture content was higher for the brown hens than for the white hens, although the dry-matter manure production was not significantly different. The results further revealed that under the experimental conditions (i.e., higher CP contents of the diet for the white hens than for the brown hens) the white hens had higher NH3 emissions than the brown hens as expressed per hen (37% to 19% higher, p = <0.001 to 0.016), per animal unit (AU, 500 kg live body mass; 59% to 39% higher, p = 0.0007 to 0.007), per unit of egg mass output (41% to 24% higher, p = 0.01 to 0.09), per unit of feed N consumed (39% to 27% higher, p = 0.01 to <0.0001), and per unit of dry manure (56% to 39% higher, p = 0.001 to 0.007). Certain differences existed in production performance among strains within the brown or white hens, but no differences in NH3 emissions were detected. Because of the relatively small sample size (number of hens involved) and the relatively short monitoring period, the results should be referenced with these limitations in mind. The objectives of this study were to compare the behaviors, postures, and heterophil-to-lymphocyte ratios (H:L) of laying hens housed in a cage system when offered a Ca premolt treatment and low-energy molt diets vs. a traditional feed withdrawal (FW) treatment during and after molt. A total of 144 Hy-Line W-36 hens (85 wk of age), housed 3 hens/cage (413 cm2/hen), were used. Hens were allotted to treatments according to a randomized complete block design, with the cage location and initial BW as the blocking criteria. Six treatments were compared in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement with 2 Ca premolt treatments (fine or coarse) and 3 low-energy molt diets (FW, soybean hulls, or wheat middlings). The 2 Ca premolt treatments differed only in Ca particle size (fine was 0.14 mm and coarse was 2.27 mm mean diameter). Two postures and 5 behaviors were recorded and H:L was measured. Data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS, with P < 0.05 considered significant. There were no differences in behaviors, postures, or H:L during the premolt baseline period. The Ca premolt treatment had no carryover effects during or after molt for behaviors or postures. During molt, hens in the FW treatment were more active, and they ate and drank less compared with hens fed soybean hulls or wheat middlings, but there were no differences in aggression, nonnutritive pecking, or sitting. Drinking and aggression during and after molt were not different, but hens postmolt engaged in more sitting and feeding and less activity, nonnutritive pecking, and preening compared with during molt. There were no differences in H:L during or after molt. In conclusion, a Ca premolt treatment did not affect the behavior of the laying hen. The low-energy molt diets did not adversely affect behavior compared with FW and did not increase H:L; therefore, they could be useful alternatives for inducing molt in laying hens. Fractional protein synthesis rates (FSR) are widely measured by the flooding dose technique via either an i.g. or an i.v. route. This study was conducted to compare differences in tracer incorporation and FSR in organs and tissues of fed piglets. The piglets were surgically implanted with catheters and randomly assigned to receive a flooding dose of Phe (1.5 mmol/kg body weight, 40 percent molar enrichment with [(2)H(5)]Phe) in saline administered via an i.p. or an i.v. route. [(2)H(5)]Phe free-pool enrichment in plasma increased logarithmically (P < 0.05) from 0 to 25% in the i.p. group, whereas it rose to a peak level within 3 min of the tracer injection and then decreased linearly (P < 0.05) in the i.v. group. Intracellular free-pool tracer enrichments in organs and tissues were within the range of the values measured for the plasma-free pool (25-27%), reaching the flooding status. Administration of the tracer via the i.p. and i.v. routes induced a logarithmical pattern (P < 0.05) of a surge in plasma cortisol concentrations within 30 min. Measurements of FSR in plasma, cardiac muscle, and skeletal muscles were lower (P < 0.05) in the i.p. than in the i.v. group due to the adverse effect of cortisol surge being more dramatic (P < 0.05) in the i.p. than in the i.v. group at 30 min of the post-tracer administration. We conclude that FSR may be measured by the flooding dose through an i.p. or an i.v. route and the i.p. route may underestimate FSR by the flooding dose for plasma, cardiac muscle, and skeletal muscles. This concern may be addressed by a fast regimen of sampling to be completed within 12-20 min after an i.p. route of tracer injection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seven separate experiments were conducted with Hy-Line W-36 hens to determine the ideal ratio of Arg, Ile, Met, Met+Cys, Thr, Trp, and Val relative to Lys for maximal egg mass. The experiments were conducted simultaneously and were each designed as a randomized complete block design with 60 experimental units (each consisting of 1 cage with 2 hens) and 5 dietary treatments. The 35 assay diets were made from a common basal diet (2,987 kcal/kg of ME; 12.3% CP; 4.06% Ca, 0.47% nonphytate F), formulated using corn, soybean meal, and meat and bone meal. The true digestible amino acid contents in the basal diet were determined using the precision-fed assay with adult cecectomized roosters. Crystalline L-Arg (free base), L-Ile, L-Lys·HCl, DL-Met, L- Thr, L-Trp, and L-Val (considered 100% true digestible) were added to the basal diet at the expense of cornstarch to make the respective assayed amino acid first limiting and to yield 5 graded inclusions of the assayed amino acid. Hens were fed the assay diets from 26 to 34 wk of age, with the first 2 wk considered a depletion period. Egg production was recorded daily and egg weight was determined weekly on eggs collected over 48 h; egg mass was calculated as egg production × egg weight. The requirement for each amino acid was determined using the broken-line regression method. Consumption of Arg did not affect egg mass, thus a requirement could not be determined. The true digestible amino acid requirements used to calculate the ideal amino acid ratio for maximum egg mass were 426 mg/d of Ile, 538 mg/d of Lys, 253 mg/d of Met, 506 mg/d of Met+Cys, 414 mg/d of Thr, 120 mg/d of Trp, and 501 mg/d of Val. The ideal amino acid ratio for maximum egg mass was Ile 79%, Met 47%, Met+Cys 94%, Thr 77%, Trp 22%, and Val 93% on a true digestible basis relative to Lys. The objective of this survey was to investigate qualitative and quantitative properties of meat from organic, free-range, and conventional broilers as currently provided to consumers. Fifteen broilers from 4 suppliers of each type were evaluated for raw meat yield, cooked meat yield, proximate composition, pH, color, lipid oxidation, fatty acid composition, and sensory attributes. Organic broilers yielded more dark (thigh) meat (P < 0.05) than free-range or conventional, when compared on a raw-meat basis, but conventional and free-range broilers yielded more (P < 0.05) cooked light (breast) meat than organic. Protein content of organic breast and thigh meat was greater (P < 0.05) than conventional in the raw and the cooked meat comparisons. The pH of breast meat from organic broilers was higher (P < 0.05) than free-range or conventional. Organic breast and thigh meat was less yellow (P < 0.05) than free-range or conventional. Fatty acid analysis showed that organic breasts and thighs were lower (P < 0.05) in saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids and higher (P < 0.05) in polyunsaturated fatty acids than free-range and conventional broilers. Shear force measurements were less (P < 0.05) for both breast and thigh meat from conventional broilers relative to free-range and organic broilers. Sensory panel results indicated that thighs from conventional broilers were more tender (P < 0.05) and less chewy (P < 0.05) than thighs from free-range and organic broilers, whereas other sensory properties did not differ. At the time of the study, March through May of 2006, the average re- tail prices for US broilers were $3.19, $2.78, and $1.29 per pound ($7.03, $6.13, and $2.84/kg) for organic, free- range, and conventional, respectively. Whereas a difference in the fatty acid composition was the largest difference observed between retail broilers in this survey, it is important to note that diets and production environments within the study were not controlled. It is apparent that the market prices for broilers at the time of this study are not fully reflected in the quantitative and qualitative measurements included in this study. It appears that consumers may be placing significant value on more intangible attributes associated with broilers marketed as organic and free-range chicken than on those attributes measured in this study. Reliable knowledge of manure nutrient content for intensive animal operations is imperative to development of effective comprehensive nutrient management plans, which will minimize nutrient runoff and pollution of adjacent waterways. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the spatial variation of manure dry-matter (DM), phosphorus (P), and nitrogen (N) content in commercial high-rise laying-hen houses, and to determine the sampling locations and number of samples that will lead to good assessment of nutrient content of manure in the houses. Two side-by-side manure samples were collected from 9 locations in each of 6 high-rise laying- hen houses (18 samples per house) and analyzed for DM, N, and P content. The 9 sample locations were distributed as one-fourth, half, and three-fourths of the building length, with 3 sample locations (every other manure row) per cross-section of the 5 manure rows. The average of DM, N, or P content from the 18 samples per house was used as the reference value for comparison of 8 sampling scenarios. Results showed that duplicate sampling at a location added little to the precision of the data. Manure samples collected crossways across the middle of the house or diagonally across the house in either direction yielded results most similar to the reference value for that house. Hence, when collecting manure samples for nutrient assessment in high-rise laying-hen houses, a single sample collected from every other manure pile across the middle of the building should be sufficient to obtain representative samples of the house and is recommended. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of feeding 5 different energy and nutrient dense diets to Hy-Line W-36 hens on long-term performance and economics. A total of 480 19 wk old Hy-Line W-36 Single Comb White Leghorn hens were weighed and randomly allocated to 6 replicate groups of 16 hens each (2 adjacent cages containing 8 hens per cage, 60.9 × 58.4 cm) per dietary treatment in a randomized complete block design. The hens were fed 5 treatment diets formulated to contain 85, 90, 95, 100, and 105% of the energy and nutrient recommendations stated in the 2009 Hy-Line Variety W-36 Commercial Management Guide. Production performance was measured for 52 wk from 19 to 70 wk age. Over the course of the trial, a significant increasing linear response to increasing energy and nutrient density was seen for hen-day egg production, egg weight, egg mass, feed efficiency, energy intake, and body weight (BW). Feed intake showed no significant linear level response to increasing energy and nutrient density except during the early production cycle. No consistent responses were noted for egg quality, percent yolk, and percent egg solids throughout the study. Significant linear responses due to energy and nutrient density were seen for egg income, feed cost, and income minus feed cost. In general, as energy and nutrient density increased, egg income and feed cost per hen increased, but income minus feed cost decreased. Overall, these results indicate that feeding Hy-Line W-36 hens increasing energy and nutrient-dense diets will increase egg production, egg weight, egg mass, feed efficiency, energy intake, BW, egg income, and feed cost, but decrease egg income minus feed cost. However, these benefits do not take effect in early production and seem to be most effective in later stages of the production cycle, perhaps “priming” the birds for better egg-production persistency with age. The objectives of this study were to evaluate and compare the effects of production, physiology, egg quality, and economics of laying hens housed in a cage system when offered a calcium premolt treatment and low-energy molt diets versus a traditional feed withdrawal (FW) treatment during and after molt. In total, 981 Hy-Line W-36 laying hens (85 wk of age) housed 3 per cage were used. Six treatments were compared in a 2 × 3 factorial design with 2 calcium premolt treatments (fine and coarse) and 3 molt diets (FW, soybean hulls, and wheat middlings). The coarse Ca was a 50:50 mix of fine (0.14-mm mean diameter) and coarse (2.27-mm mean diameter) CaCO3, whereas the fine Ca was an all-fine CaCO3. Both diets were formulated to contain 4.6% Ca, such that only the particle size of the CaCO3 differed. Production parameters in experiment 1 included egg production, egg weight and mass, specific gravity, Haugh units, egg components, feed consumption and utilization, and BW. Physiological parameters in experiment 2 included ovary and oviduct weights, femur- and humerus-ash percentages, heterophil to lymphocyte ratios, plasma Ca and inorganic P concentrations, and alkaline phosphatase activity. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and P < 0.05 was significant. The fine-Ca premolt treatment was more effective than the coarse-Ca treatment at decreasing egg production during molt and increasing it postmolt, regardless of the molt diet. The FW molt diet resulted in the greatest decrease in production, but the soybean hulls diet resulted in lower production and ovary and oviduct weights during molt compared with those of the wheat middlings molt diet. Therefore, a fine-Ca premolt treatment and a low-energy molt diet, particularly soybean hulls, can be useful alternatives to a FW molt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A study was conducted to determine the influence on broiler chicken growth and laying hen performance of chemical and physical traits of corn kernels from different hybrids. A total of 720 male 1-d-old Ross-308 broiler chicks were allotted to floor pens in 2 replicated experiments with a randomized complete block design. A total of 240 fifty-two-week-old Hy-Line W-36 laying hens were allotted to cages in a randomized complete block design. Corn-soybean meal diets were formulated for 3 broiler growth phases and one 14-wk-long laying hen phase to be marginally deficient in Lys and TSAA to allow for the detection of differences or correlations attributable to corn kernel chemical or physical traits. The broiler chicken diets were also marginally deficient in Ca and nonphytate P. Within a phase, corn- and soybean- based diets containing equal amounts of 1 of 6 different corn hybrids were formulated. The corn hybrids were selected to vary widely in chemical and physical traits. Feed consumption and BW were recorded for broiler chickens every 2 wk from 0 to 6 wk of age. Egg production was recorded daily, and feed consumption and egg weights were recorded weekly for laying hens between 53 and 67 wk of age. Physical and chemical composition of kernels was correlated with performance measures by multivariate ANOVA. Chemical and physical kernel traits were weakly correlated with performance in broiler chickens from 0 to 2 wk of age (P < 0.05, ∣ r ∣ < 0.42). However, from 4 to 6 wk of age and 0 to 6 wk of age, only kernel chemical traits were correlated with broiler chicken performance (P < 0.05, ∣ r ∣ < 0.29). From 53 to 67 wk of age, correlations were observed between both kernel physical and chemical traits and laying hen performance (P < 0.05, ∣ r ∣ < 0.34). In both experiments, the correlations of performance measures with individual kernel chemical and physical traits for any single kernel trait were not large enough to base corn hybrid selection on for feeding poultry. An experiment was conducted with laying hens to determine the AMEn value of crude glycerol, a coproduct of biodiesel production. Crude glycerol (87% glycerol, 9% water, 0.03% methanol, 1.26% Na, and 3,625 kcal/kg of gross energy) was obtained from a commercial biodiesel production facility (Ag Processing Inc., Sergeant Bluff, IA). A total of forty-eight 40-wk-old laying hens (Hy-Line W-36) were placed in metabolic cages (2 hens! cage) and given free access to the experimental diets. A corn and soybean meal-based basal diet (18% CP, 2,875 kcal/kg of AMEn, 4.51% Ca, 0.51% nonphytate P) was formulated with 15% glucose·H2O and 1% Celite. Four dietary treatments were created by substituting 0, 5, 10, or 15% crude glycerol for glucose·H2O (3,640 kcal/kg of AMEn). After 7 d of dietary adaptation, excreta were collected twice daily for 3 d, freeze-dried, and analyzed for contents of DM, Kjeldahl N, acid-insoluble ash, and gross energy. Egg production was recorded daily, and eggs were collected on d 7 and 8 of the experiment for calculation of egg mass (egg production × egg weight). Feed consumption was measured over the 10-d experimental period. Egg-production data were analyzed by ANOVA with 4 treatments and 6 replications in a completely randomized experimental design. The AMEn value of crude glycerol was estimated as the slope of the linear relationship between the inclusion rate of dietary crude glycerol and the glucose-corrected AMEn value of the experimental diets. No significant treatment effects (P> 0.1) were apparent for egg-production rate (93.0%), egg weight (56.1 g), egg mass (52.2 g/d), or feed consumption (104 g/d). Linear regression analysis (P < 0.001, r² = 0.92, n = 24) revealed that the AMEn value of the crude glycerol used in, this study was 3,805 ± 238 kcal/kg (mean ± SEM; as-is basis) for laying hens. Ammonia emission is a major concern for the poultry industry and can be lowered by dietary inclusion of fibrous ingredients and by lowering the dietary CP content. The objectives of this research were to determine the effects of dietary fiber and reduced-CP diets, which may lower NH3 emission, on egg production and N balance in laying hens. A total of 256 Hy-Line W-36 hens were fed diets with 2 contents of CP (normal and reduced) and 4 fiber treatments in a 2 x 4 factorial arrangement from 23 to 58 wk of age. The fiber treatments included a corn and soybean meal-based control diet and diets formulated with either 10.0% corn dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS), 7.3% wheat middlings (WM), or 4.8% soybean hulls (SH) added to contribute equal amounts of neutral detergent fiber. The CP contents of the reduced-CP diets were approximately 1 percentage unit lower than that of the normal-CP diets. All diets were formulated on a digestible amino acid basis to be isoenergetic. There were no effects (P > 0.05) of including corn DDGS, WM, or SH in the diet on egg production, egg weight, egg mass, yolk color, feed consumption, feed utilization, or BW gain. Although the corn DDGS and WM diets resulted in an increase (P < 0.001) in N consumption, N excretion was not affected (P > 0.10) compared with hens fed the control diet. The reduced-CP diets did not affect egg weight, feed consumption, or BW gain (P > 0.05); however, egg production, egg mass, feed utilization, N consumption, and N excretion were lower than that from the hens fed the normal-CP diets (P < 0.05). The results of this study show that the diets containing 10% corn DDGS, 7% WM, or 5% SH did not affect egg production or N excretion. Ammonia (NH3) emission is a major concern for the poultry industry. All diets were formulated on the basis of digestible amino acid content and were formulated to be isoenergetic. Fresh manure was collected such that pH, uric acid, and Kjeldahl N contents could be measured. The NH3 emission from manure was measured over 7 d by placing pooled 24-h manure samples in NH3 emission vessels. Data were analyzed by ANOVA with Dunnett's multiple-comparisons procedure to compare results from the fiber treatments with the control, whereas the main effect of protein was used to compare the normal- and reduced-CP treatments. Dietary corn DDGS, WM, or SH lowered (P < 0.01) the 7-d cumulative manure NH3 emission from 3.9 g/kg of DM manure for the control to 1.9, 2.1, and 2.3 g/kg of DM manure, respectively, and lowered (P > 0.05) the daily NH3 emission rate. Results of this study showed that dietary inclusion of 10.0% corn DDGS, 7.3% WM, or 4.8% SH lowered NH3 emission from laying-hen manure; however, reducing the CP content by 1 percentage unit had no measurable effect on NH3 emission. Feed additives can change the microbiological environment of the animal digestive track, nutrient composition of feces, and its gaseous emissions. This 2-yr field study involving commercial laying-hen houses in central Iowa was conducted to assess the effects of feeding diets containing EcoCal and corn-dried distillers grain with solubles (DDGS) on ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and greenhouse gas (CO2, CH4, and N2O) emissions. Three high-rise layer houses (256,600 W-36 hens per house) received standard industry diet (Control), a diet containing 7% EcoCal (EcoCal) or a diet containing 10% DDGS (DDGS). Gaseous emissions were continuously monitored during the period of December 2007 to December 2009, covering the full production cycle. The 24-month test results revealed that mean NH3 emission rates were 0.58 +/- 0.05, 0.82 +/- 0.04, and 0.96 +/- 0.05 g/hen/day for the EcoCal, DDGS, and Control diet, respectively. Namely, compared to the Control diet, the EcoCal and DDGS diets reduced NH3 emission by an average of 39.2% and 14.3%, respectively. The concurrent H2S emission rates were 5.39 +/- 0.46, 1.91 +/- 0.13, and 1.79 +/- 0.16 mg/ hen/day for the EcoCal, DDGS, and Control diet, respectively. CO2 emission rates were similar for the three diets, 87.3 +/- 1.37, 87.4 +/- 1.26, and 89.6 +/- 1.6 g/hen/day for EcoCal, DDGS, and Control, respectively (P = 0.45). The DDGS and EcoCal houses tended to emit less CH4 than the Control house (0.16 and 0.12 vs. 0.20 g/hen/day) during the monitored summer season. The efficacy of NH3 emission reduction by the EcoCal diet decreased with increasing outside temperature, varying from 72.2% in February 2009 to -7.10% in September 2008. Manure of the EcoCal diet contained 68% higher ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) and 4.7 times higher sulfur content than that of the Control diet. Manure pH values were 8.0, 8.9, and 9.3 for EcoCal, DDGS, and Control diets, respectively. This extensive field study verifies that dietary manipulation provides a viable means to reduce NH3 emissions from modern laying-hen houses.

Three energy balance experiments were conducted to determine AMEn of glycerin using broiler chickens of diverse ages. In experiment 1, two dietary treatments were fed from 4 to 11 d of age. Dietary treatments consisted of a control diet (no added glycerin) and a diet containing 6% glycerin (94% control diet + 6% glycerin). Four dietary treatments were provided in experiment 2 (from 17 to 24 d of age) and 3 (from 38 to 45 d of age). Diets in experiment 2 and 3 were 1) control diet (no added glycerin); 2) 3% added glycerin (97% control diet + 3% glycerin); 3) 6% added glycerin (94% control diet + 6% glycerin); and 4) 9% added glycerin (91% control diet + 9% glycerin). Diets in experiment 1 and 2 were identical, but the diet used in experiment 3 had reduced nutrient levels based on bird age. In experiments 2 and 3, broilers were fed 91, 94, 97, and 100% of ad libitum intake so that differences in AMEn consumption were only due to glycerin. A single source of glycerin was used in all experiments. Feed intake, BW, energy intake, energy excretion, nitrogen intake, nitrogen excretion, AMEn, and AMEn intake were determined in all experiments. In experiment 1, AMEn determination utilized the difference approach by subtracting AMEn of the control diet from AMEn of the test diet. In experiments 2 and 3, AMEn intake was regressed against feed intake with the slope estimating AMEn of glycerin. Regression equations were Y = 3,331x -72.59 (P < or = 0.0001) and Y = 3,348.62x -140.18 (P < or = 0.0001) for experiments 2 and 3, respectively. The AMEn of glycerin was determined as 3,621, 3,331, and 3,349 kcal/kg in experiments 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The average AMEn of glycerin across the 3 experiments was 3,434 kcal/kg, which is similar to its gross energy content. These results indicate that AMEn of glycerin is utilized efficiently by broiler chickens.

Our objectives were to examine the effect of an i.p. injection of a flooding dose of l-phenylalanine (Phe) containing l-[ring-(2)H(5)]Phe on time courses of physiologic responses, the tracer Phe enrichments, and fractional protein synthesis rates (FSR) in plasma, visceral organs, and muscles. In a randomized complete block design, 5 blocks of 5 littermate piglets were weaned at 16 d of age and injected i.p. with a flooding dose of l-Phe (1.5 mmol/kg body weight) on d 8 postweaning under fed conditions. Tissues were collected at 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 min postinjection. Plasma glucose concentration increased (cubic effect, P < 0.05) from 4.8 preinjection to 5.8 mmol/L 15 min postinjection and returned to preinjection levels thereafter. Plasma insulin concentration did not change (P > 0.05) over time. Plasma Phe concentration increased logarithmically (P < 0.05) from 85 to 711 micromol/L and reached 95% of the maximum concentration 48 min postinjection, but no changes (P > 0.05) in tissue contents of other free amino acids were observed. The Phe free pools in plasma, visceral organs, and muscles were evenly enriched (32.3 +/- 1.4 mol%) with l-[(2)H(5)]Phe 15 min after the i.p. injection. The FSR in visceral organs did not change (P > 0.05), whereas plasma and muscle protein FSR decreased (P < 0.05) over time. We conclude that the i.p. injected tracer Phe rapidly distributed into plasma and intra- and extracellular spaces, and was effective for measuring FSR in visceral organs, but not in plasma and muscles of pigs.

Whole carcasses of 3-wk-old broiler chicks from four independent experiments were analyzed for percentage of whole-body DM, ether extract, and CP. The percentage of whole-body ash was calculated by the difference among DM, ether extract, and CP. A linear relationship between percentage whole-body DM and percentage whole-body ether extract (P < 0.001; r2 = 0.798) was found, but no relationships were detected between percentage whole-body DM and percentage whole-body CP (P = 0.29; r2 = 0.010). The percentage of whole-body ash was moderately correlated with the percentage of whole-body DM (P = 0.04; r2 = 0.036). In conclusion, the percentage of whole-body ether extract of 3-wk-old broiler chicks can be predicted from the percentage of whole-body DM by using the prediction equation Y = 0.961x - 17.855. Neither the percentages of whole-body CP nor ash could be accurately predicted from the wholebody DM percentage.

Three experiments were conducted to investigate effects of dietary manipulations to improve growth performance and whole-body composition of broiler chicks fed low-protein diets supplemented with crystalline amino acids. In all experiments, male chicks (1 d old) were fed a common corn-soybean meal diet (23% CP) for 7 d and subsequently allotted to treatment diets in a completely randomized design (10 chicks per floor pen, six replications). Chicks had free access to the isoenergetic diets (3,200 kcal MEn/kg) for 2 wk, after which chicks were weighed and then fasted for 24 h, and the whole-body DM, N, and ether extract contents of two chicks per pen (and six baseline chicks) were determined. In Experiment 1, Gln or Asn replaced 1% triammonium citrate in the low-protein diet (19% CP). In Experiments 2 and 3, dietary concentrations of crystalline essential and nonessential amino acids, respectively, were increased incrementally in the low-protein diets (19 to 20% CP). In all experiments, chicks fed low-protein diets grew slower, used feed less efficiently, and retained less N and more ether extract than chicks fed the control diets (P < or = 0.05), despite additions of crystalline Gln or Asn and despite increased dietary concentrations of crystalline essential and nonessential amino acids. Chicks fed low-protein diets excreted less N (P < 0.001) than did chicks fed the high-protein diets, and N excretion increased linearly (P < 0.001) with N intake. In summary, low-protein diets failed to support equal growth performance to that of high-protein control diets.
