This extract is the first English translation of Hans Blumenberg's posthumous publication Beschreibung des Menschen, which was published by Suhrkamp Verlag in 2006. Based on lectures concerning the German tradition of philosophical anthropology that Blumenberg gave at the University of Münster, the book's basic project is the explicit fusion of Husserlian phenomenology with philosophical anthropology — an attempt to grasp what the human is by identifying its basic structures. The result is a highly nuanced conception of the possibility of human self‐reflection that is at the core of philosophy and of culture as a recipe for the species' survival. Instead of answering the question "What is man?" Blumenberg proposes here a minimalist anthropology that seeks to answer a different question: "How is man possible?" The chapters selected for translation are intended to give readers a sense of the book, little known in the Anglophone world, which in its original German runs to some nine hundred pages. We introduce here for the first time in Spanish, the article Hans Blumenberg wrote for the Hochland magazine on the occasion of the publication of Franz Kafka's Letter to his Father in 1952. This is an early text, the oldest translated into our language, in which the philosopher of Lübeck already shows some of the ideas he will develop in later works such as The legitimacy of the modern age or Work on myth. Therefore, it is an article which concision should not deceive the reader since its beauty and depth in dealing, not only with literature, but its relation to religion, presents us with an early example of "blumenberguian" study of an attempt to "liberation of the absolute" to serve us with the successful formula with which Odo Marquard wanted to apprehend the "bottom" of Hans Blumenberg's thought, the one Kafka undertook in his literary work. This essay by the influential post-war German cultural theorist Hans Blumenberg was published originally in German in 1976 in a collection of studies on Simmel’s aesthetics. Renowned as the author of The Legitimacy of the Modern Age (1966), Work on Myth (1979), Paradigms for a Metaphorology (1960) and other major writings, the essay showcases Blumenberg’s unique approach to metaphorical figuration in the languages of philosophy and philosophers. Here Blumenberg considers how money stands as Simmel’s ‘proto-metaphor’ for Life in the latter’s nascent Lebensphilosophie. The very phenomenon that might seem most opposed to Life and to ‘higher’ ‘spiritual’ values is also the phenomenon that most dynamically unlocks life’s plenitude of creative forms – even as it threatens constantly to destroy this plenitude through effects of reification and objectification. As Blumenberg reads Simmel, Life itself turns out to be pure circulation, sociation, and interactivity, an endless cycle of extensions and intensifications of value emerging through processes of social exchange. The essay forms a striking counterpart to the many seminal readings of Simmel in the German critical theory tradition from Benjamin, Kracauer, Adorno and Horkheimer to Habermas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
