Non-covalent interactions involving element-hydrogen contacts are a central part in supramolecular chemistry and play essential roles in biomolecular structure. Reported here is a systematic computational analysis of such interactions within XHn---YHm dimers, where X and Y are C, Si, N, P, O, S, F and Cl, respectively. Two functionals are employed – the widely used BP86 and the M06-2X functional especially designed for describing noncovalent interactions. The interaction energies are found to be correlated with charge separation to a degree of 80%, suggesting that these noncovalent interactions can be reasonably explained/predicted by their electrostatic component. Energy decomposition analyses on the other hand suggest that correlation effects are the underlying root of the interaction. The rarely discussed intermolecular vibrations are also analyzed and noted to sometimes intercede in the typical observation windows for molecular spectroscopy. Moreover, in some cases notable effects of the non-covalent interactions are noted upon internal vibrations of the partners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two new zinc(II) complexes, [Zn2(PBM)2(terephthalate)(formate)2] (1) and {[Zn(PBM)(fumarate)]∙H2O}n (2), were synthesized using 1,3-bis(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)propane (PBM) and two different dicarboxylic acids under solvothermal conditions. Complexes 1 and 2 have been characterized by infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The structural analysis showed that 1 was a binuclear structure and then formed a 3D supramolecular network structure through hydrogen bond and π-π conjugation, while 2 was a one-dimensional coordination polymer. In 1 and 2, the zinc ions were four-coordinate with an N2O2 donor set and a slightly distorted tetrahedral geometry. The solid-state fluorescence properties indicate that the fluorescence peaks belong to the π*-π transition of the ligand PBM, which has a significant red shift and enhancement with the order being 1 > 2 > PBM. The stronger fluorescence of the complexes than the ligand is due to the immobilization of the ligand through coordination, which reduces the energy loss of thermal vibration. The π∙∙∙π conjugation in 1 results in a stronger fluorescence of 1 than 2. Therefore, coordination and π∙∙∙π conjugation will affect the fluorescence of complexes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT The synthesis of doped polypyrrole (PPy) nanocomplexes and their size, morphology, doping level, and electrical conductivity are discussed. The synthetic route of doped PPy nanocomplexes is presented by means of the chemical oxidative polymerization and in situ doping process in the presence of a binary acid mixture (hydrochloric acid and perchloric acid). The electrical conductivities of the doped PPy nanocomplexes are enhanced from 0.88 to 4.5 S/cm by the optimum molar ratio of HClO4 and HCl in the binary acid mixture. In addition, the average particle size of the doped PPy nanocomplexes decreases from 280 to 30 nm with a narrow particle size distribution when increasing the proportion of HClO4 relative to HCl in the binary acid mixture; this result is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and capillary hydrodynamic fractionation instrument analyses. Moreover, at different molar ratios in the binary acid mixture, the zeta-potential and oxidation level of the doped PPy nanocomplexes have a confirmed association with particle size and electrical properties. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
