Surface energy balance has always been a goal of those studying the Earth's climate system. However, many studies have demonstrated that turbulent heat fluxes are usually underestimated by eddy covariance (EC) measurements, such that the energy balance is not closed. This study proposes a new perspective on calculating sensible heat flux based on the environmental temperature using EC. Using this approach, additional sensible heat fluxes were detected as outcomes of the vertical transportation of thermal structures in the atmospheric surface layer (ASL). For data obtained over a 40-day period over a grassland in Southern China, additional sensible heat flux observations exceeding 50 W m-2 were measured for 8 of the 40 days; smaller but still significant contributions were captured for another 11 days. In the proposed model, the difference between the mean and environmental temperature (ΔΤ) and the local mean vertical velocity (w) serve as determinants for the additional flux, where the former can be deemed as the activity level of the thermal structures. A modeled underestimation of a[w] Ht of the total vertical sensible heat flux was revealed using our method, where α equals 3.55 for this study, Ht is the traditional EC results, and [w] is the non-dimensional w. Moreover, the additional flux usually showed large values in the daytime that were not detectable using the traditional EC method; this may help explain the energy imbalance problem in the ASL. Introduction: Polygonum multiflorum Thunb., a widely used herbal medicine, has trouble with the hepatic adverse effect. Processing is an effective method to increase potency and reduce the adverse effects of herbal medicines. Polygoni Multiflori Radix Praeparata (PMRP), the decoction pieces processed from raw material, is widely consumed in clinical practice in many countries. The quality control of PMRP has attracted more and more attention worldwide. Objective: A simple and rapid quality evaluation method using an electronic eye (E‐eye) combined with chemometrics was proposed for controlling the quality of PMRP. Materials and methods: The semi‐quantitative and quantitative data of 105 major components in 128 batches of PMRP samples obtained by three different analysis instruments were fused to investigate the correlation with the dynamic exterior colour determined by E‐eye. The correlation between exterior colour and chemical fusion dataset was investigated by orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS‐DA) and partial least squares regression (PLSR). According to the results of correlation analysis, the color parameters of high‐quality PMRP was set. Results: Correlation studies by chemometrics revealed that the exterior colour depth was significantly correlated with 32 components [variable importance in the projection (VIP) > 1.0, p < 0.05]. The colour parameter of E*ab located in the range of 46.69–51.66 can be used easily, rapidly, and in an environment‐friendly way to determine whether the PMRP sample has reached sufficient processing time with good quality. Conclusion: This study adds some scientific information to our understanding of traditional medicine while contributing an alternative method for assessing the quality of other decoction pieces. The goal of the paper is to reveal discrepancies of turbulent variables over different surfaces (sea, island, land) based on the measurements taken on three towers during (including before and after) seven typhoon episodes from 2008 to 2018. The atmospheric stability, turbulent spectrum, friction velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, dissipative heating, and gust factor are examined. The similar turbulent characteristics over sea and on the island reinforce the previous conclusion that the turbulent measurements on the island mainly represent the sea surface. The turbulent characteristics over sea and on land are very different due to the different underlying surface roughness. The unstable (stable) condition dominates on the sea (land) surface. Turbulent spectra both over sea and on land follow the canonical Kolmogorov's power law with the −5/3 slope. The cospectra on land are more peaked than those over sea. All of the friction velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, and dissipative heating increase with increasing 10 m wind speed, and those on land are much larger than those over sea. The distributions of gust factors widen and shift to higher on land than those over sea. The distributions of gust factors at heights of 10 m and 40 m are biased to higher values than those at heights of 160 m and 320 m on land. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The responses of the atmospheric boundary layer at low latitudes (20°N) to forcing by an ocean‐mesoscale sea surface temperature (SST) front are investigated under the conditions that the background wind intersects with the SST front (i.e., there are cross‐frontal and along‐frontal wind components) through ideal numerical experiments. The simulation results show that the responses of the atmospheric boundary layer are sensitive to the background wind speed and its direction relative to the SST front. The type of convergence and divergence of Ekman transport and that of the background wind can be constructive or destructive, depending on the relative orientation of the background wind and the SST front. When the two kinds of convergence and divergence are constructive, they can cause strong convergence and divergence in the boundary layer near the SST front; further, the unbalanced state forced over the SST front will excite inertial gravity waves propagating into the free atmosphere. The vertical velocity excited in this case is much greater than that when there is only a cross‐frontal background wind component with an equivalent magnitude. On the contrary, when the two kinds of convergence and divergence are destructive, the resultants of convergence and divergence are reduced significantly, and the interaction between the boundary layer and the aloft atmosphere decays rapidly with height. Deriving large-scale and high-quality precipitation products from satellite remote-sensing spectral data is always challenging in quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE), and limited studies have been conducted even using China's latest Fengyun-4A (FY-4A) geostationary satellite. Taking three rainstorm events over South China as examples, a machine-learning-based regression model was established using the random forest (RF) method to derive QPE from FY-4A observations, in conjunction with cloud parameters and physical quantities. The cross-validation results indicate that both daytime (DQPE) and nighttime (NQPE) RF algorithms performed well in estimating QPE, with the bias score, correlation coefficient and root-mean-square error of DQPE (NQPE) of 2.17 (2.42), 0.79 (0.83) and 1.77 mmh-1 (2.31 mmh-1), respectively. Overall, the algorithm has a high accuracy in estimating precipitation under the heavy-rain level or below. Nevertheless, the positive bias still implies an overestimation of precipitation by the QPE algorithm, in addition to certain misjudgements from non-precipitation pixels to precipitation events. Also, the QPE algorithm tends to underestimate the precipitation at the rainstorm or even above levels. Compared to single-sensor algorithms, the developed QPE algorithm can better capture the spatial distribution of land-surface precipitation, especially the centre of strong precipitation. Marginal difference between the data accuracy over sites in urban and rural areas indicate that the model performs well over space and has no evident dependence on landscape. Tropical depressions formed over the South China Sea usually produce severe flooding and wind damage when they develop into a storm and make landfall. To provide an early warning, forecasters should know when, and if, a tropical depression will develop into a tropical storm. To better understand and predict such development, we examine the dynamic and thermodynamic variables of 74 tropical depressions over the South China Sea, 52 of which developed into storms, hereafter "developing," with the remaining being classified as "nondeveloping." Using the National Centers for Environmental Prediction Final (NCEP FNL) data, verified with ECMWF forecast data, we examine the dynamic and thermodynamic statistics that characterize these tropical cyclones. Based on these characteristics, we propose seven criteria to determine whether a tropical depression will develop. Five had been used before, but two new criteria are also found to be useful. These two are associated with the diabatic heating rate and help to determine whether a tropical cyclone diurnal cycle exists and whether the convection system remains intact in the center: 1) presence of a regular diurnal variation of the diabatic heating rate at the center and 2) occurrence of specific peaks in the radiative-heating profile. We test all seven criteria on all tropical depression cases in 2018/19 before the system developed or decayed, showing that these criteria can help to operationally identify whether or not a tropical depression develops into a tropical storm with an average lead time of 36.6 h. This study investigates the rainfall asymmetry of tropical cyclones (TCs) in the process of making landfall in Guangdong (GD), south China, on the basis of satellite‐based and reanalysis precipitation data. We mainly focus on TC rainfall asymmetry, its main influencing factor and its change in the process of landfall, and the difference between different El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phases. The results reveal that vertical wind shear (VWS) is the dominant influencing factor of TC rainfall asymmetry in GD. The rainfall maximum is located in downshear left of VWS. The TC rainfall asymmetry has little change in the process of making landfall, though the rain rate decreases. Both the phase and amplitude of TC rainfall asymmetry have no significant change from 24 hr prior to landfall to 12 hr after landfall. The rainfall maximum steadily lies in downshear left. The amplitude of rainfall asymmetry is about 50%, suggesting that the asymmetric rainfall is about half of the axisymmetric rainfall. Small-scale turbulence has an essential role in sea-fog formation and evolution, but is not completely understood. This study analyzes measurements of the small-scale turbulence, together with the boundary layer structure and the synoptic and mesoscale conditions over the life cycle of a cold advection fog event and a warm advection fog event, both off the coast of southern China. The measurement data come from two sites: one on the coast and one at sea. These findings include the following: 1) For cold advection fog, the top can extend above the inversion base, but formation of an overlaying cloud causes the fog to dissipate. 2) For warm advection fog, two layers of low cloud can merge to form deep fog, with the depth exceeding 1000 m, when strong advection of warm moist air produces active thermal-turbulence mixing above the thermal-turbulence interface. 3) Turbulence near the sea surface is mainly thermally driven for cold advection fog, but mechanically driven for warm advection fog. 4) The momentum fluxes of both fog cases are below 0.04 kg m−1 s−2. However, the sensible and latent heat flux differ between the cases: in the cold advection fog case, the sensible and latent heat fluxes are roughly upward, averaging 2.58 and 26.75 W m−2, respectively; however, in the warm advection fog case, the sensible and latent heat flux are mostly downward, averaging −6.98 and −6.22 W m−2, respectively. 5) Low-level vertical advection is important for both fogs, but has a larger influence on fog development in the warm advection fog case. The drag coefficient is essential for calculating the aerodynamic friction between air and sea. In this study, we regress a set of relationships between the drag coefficient and the wind speed for different wind ranges using an observational dataset that consists of 5941 estimates of the mean flow and fluxes from 11 aircraft turbulent measurements over the sea surface. Results show that: (1) the drag coefficient is a power function of wind speed over smooth sea surface when it is no greater than 4.5 ms−1, and the drag coefficient decreases with the increase of wind speed; and (2) for rough sea surface, when the wind speed is greater than 4.5 ms−1 and less than or equal to 10.5 ms−1, the drag coefficient increases linearly with the increase of horizontal wind speed; when the wind speed is greater than 10.5 ms−1 and less than or equal to 33.5 ms−1, the drag coefficient changes parabolically with the increase of wind speed; when the wind speed is greater than 33.5 ms−1, the drag coefficient is constant. Additionally, regressed from drag coefficient, the saturated wind speed threshold is 23 ms−1. Recent studies show that the rapid increases in urbanization and human activities in the PRD region have important impacts on regional air quality. In addition to local anthropogenic emissions which are major driving forces for poor air quality in this region, biomass burning in Southeast Asia has also important contribution on aerosol and ozone concentrations in the PRD region. In this paper, this effect is analyzed by using satellite data, ground measurements and models. MODIS aerosol optical depth (AOD) distribution in March 2006 shows a clear enhancement in AOD between Southeast Asia and the PRD region. With detail wind analysis, two distinguished conditions are classified, i.e., Condition-1 (PRD is under influence of the biomass burning from Southeast Asia) and Condition-2 (PRD is not under influence of the biomass burning from Southeast Asia). The characterizations of aerosol, UV, and ozone in Guangzhou city (located in the PRD region) under these two conditions are analyzed. The analyses suggest that aerosols and CO concentrations are higher in Condition-1 than in Condition-2; while the UV intensity and O3 concentrations are lower in Condition-1 than in Condition-2. This result indicates that in Condition-1, the enhanced aerosol concentrations from the Southeast Asia biomass burning produce reduction of UV intensity, and thus decreases the formation of ozone in Guangzhou. This paper suggests that the rapid increase in urbanization and human activities has important impacts on visibility in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. A long-term trend of visibility in Guangzhou (one of the largest cities in PRD) shows that between 1954 and 2006, there is a rapid change in visibility. Between 1954 and 1972, low visibility has the smallest occurrence (less than a few days per year). Between 1972 and 1980, the visibility condition is within a transition period, and the occurrence of low visibility increases rapidly. Between 1980 and 2006, the occurrence of low visibility remains very high (150daysyear−1), suggesting that the city of Guangzhou is often under low-visibility conditions since the 1980s. In order to understand the causes of the low visibility in Guangzhou, we analyze physical and chemical characterizations of a low-visibility event occurring between 15 and 29 November 2005. The analysis suggests that high concentration of aerosol particles is a major cause for the low visibility. The threshold aerosol concentration that is corresponding to the low visibility (<10km) is about 120μgm−3. Further analysis indicates that the relationship between aerosol concentrations and visibility appears in a non-linearity correlation. When aerosol concentrations are very high (above 120μgm−3), the change in visibility is not sensitive to aerosol concentration. By contrast, when aerosol concentrations are <120μgm−3, the change in visibility is very sensitive to aerosol concentrations. This study also shows that absorbing aerosol particles (such as element carbon (EC)) play important roles in the reduction of visibility. In most cases, the extremely low visibility (<2km) is often resulted from high EC concentrations (above 15μgm−3). In averaged condition, small scattering aerosol particles (<1μm in radius) have the largest contribution to the reduction of visibility (about 70%). By contrast, large scattering particles have the smallest contribution to the reduction of visibility. This analysis implies that the persistent low visibility is mainly resulted from small aerosol particles, including both scattering and absorbing particles. In order to improve the visibility in the Guangzhou region, the reduction of small particle emissions is urgently needed. This study suggests that there are two important steps to improve the visibility in Guangzhou. First, the aerosol concentration should be reduced to less than the threshold value (120μgm−3). Second, a further decrease in aerosols from its threshold value will lead to a significant improvement in visibility due to the non-linearity relationship between aerosol and visibility. Abstract: Over the Guangzhou region, also called the Pearl River Delta (PRD) of Southern China, there are often high aerosol concentrations. The satellite (MODIS) data show that the aerosol optical depth is often higher than 0.6 in this area, which is known as Asian Brown Cloud region. In some extreme events, these high aerosol levels have caused very low visibilities. In this paper, we will show that on 2 November 2003, the daily average visibility is less than 2km (the instantaneous value is less than 200m), and the aerosol optical depth is greater than 1.2. We analyze the cause of this particular event. The analysis indicates that this event is related to the hurricane of “Melor 0319”. The hurricane is located at the northwest Philippines on 2 November 2003, and the Guangzhou region is outside the hurricane. The hurricane produces a strong descent motion in the lower troposphere, a weak surface wind speed, and a relatively low planetary boundary layer (PBL) in the Guangzhou region. As a result, the strong subsidence causes descending air motions to force the aerosol particles into a very shallow layer, and the weak horizontal wind acts to keep the aerosol particles inside the source region, producing very high aerosol concentrations and extremely low visibility in the Guangzhou region on 2 November 2003. This case analysis will be useful to better understand the causes of the poor air quality over Guangzhou, which is a first step for ultimately improving it in the future. For example, one can reduce emissions when synoptic conditions are expected to cause recurrences of the phenomenon discussed in the paper. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
