Abstract Background Appropriate maternal referral system plays an essential role in curbing maternal mortality. Although the occurrence of obstetric complications is often unpredictable, addressing bottlenecks of the referral system is crucial to facilitate the women to have access to timely lifesaving interventions. Nonetheless, little is known about the barriers to maternal referral system in the eastern Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the barriers to maternal referral system at selected referral hospitals in eastern Ethiopia. Methods Key informant interviews and in-depth interviews were conducted among purposively selected respondents who had a role in maternal referral processes. A total of 12 key informants that comprised of liaison officers, healthcare providers and three in-depth interviews with referred women were conducted. Semi-structured interview guide was developed and used to facilitate the interviews. All the interviews were tape recorded, complemented by note taking. Then audio recorded interviews were transcribed as per verbatim and imported to NVivo for coding and merging. The data were thematically synthesized. Results The study identified a range of barriers that affect the maternal referral system in Eastern Ethiopia. The main barriers are grouped into three domains, such as: communication, transportation, and healthcare system. The most commonly reported barriers were lack of pre-referral communication and feedback, using informal communication, incomplete referral forms, poor ambulance service including misuse of ambulances, lack of skilled healthcare escort and lack of medical equipment at emergency, unnecessary self-referrals, poor referral skills and limited number of health professions. Conclusions The maternal referral system is overwhelmingly affected by lack of skill, logistics (referral form), misuse of available ambulance, poor communication, and limited seeking of feedback. Regular consultative meeting with relevant stakeholders and uptake of feedback are crucial to improve referral communication, proper use of ambulance and building capacity of health workforce about referral are essential to improve maternal referral system.

Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of indigenous herbal medicine use and its associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) at public health facilities in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia.Design A facility-based cross-sectional study design.Setting The study was conducted in seven public health facilities (one referral hospital, three urban and three rural health centres) in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, from October to November 2022.Participants 628 pregnant women of any gestational age who had been on ANC follow-up at selected public health facilities were included.Main outcome measures Prevalence of indigenous herbal medicine (users vs non-users) and associated factors.Results The study revealed that 47.8% (95% CI 43.8% to 51.6%) of pregnant women used herbal medicines. Lack of formal education (adjusted OR, AOR 5.47, 95% CI 2.40 to 12.46), primary level (AOR 4.74, 95% CI 2.15 to 10.44), housewives (AOR 4.15, 95% CI 1.83 to 9.37), number of ANC visits (AOR 2.58, 95% CI 1.27 to 5.25), insufficient knowledge (AOR 4.58, 95% CI 3.02 to 6.77) and favourable perception (AOR 2.54, 95% CI 1.71 to 3.77) were factors significantly associated with herbal medicine use. The most commonly used herbs were garden cress (Lepidium sativum) (32%), bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina) (25.2%), moringa (Moringa oleifera) (24.5%). Common indications were related to gastrointestinal problems, blood pressure and sugar.Conclusion The prevalence of herbal medicine use is high (one in two pregnant women) and significantly associated with education level, occupation, ANC visits, knowledge and perceptions. The study’s findings are helpful in advancing comprehension of herbal medicines using status, types and enforcing factors. It is essential that health facilities provide herbal counselling during ANC visits, and health regulatory bodies ought to raise awareness and implement interventions to lower the risks from over-the-counter herbal medicine use by pregnant women.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the willingness of human papillomavirus vaccine and its associated factors in Dire Dawa in 2022. Ethiopia is undergoing human papillomavirus vaccine implementation in the country with the support of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization. However, there is a scarcity of data on problems encountered and the receiver’s acceptance of the vaccine. Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 634 female adolescents from 1 April to 1 May 2022. A simple random sampling technique was used to select study participants. Pretested structured self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data. Data were entered into EPI-data 3.1 and exported to Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 23.00 software for analysis. Descriptive analysis was conducted to summarize data with text, tables, and figures. A binary logistic regression model was fitted to identify factors associated with the willingness of the human papillomavirus vaccine. Adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals and p -values less than 0.05 were used to determine the association between independent and dependent variables. Hosmer and Lemeshow test was used to determine model fitness. Results: The magnitude of human papillomavirus vaccine willingness among adolescent girls was 56% with 95% CI (52.1%–59.9%). Discussion on sexual and reproductive health issues (AOR = 7.67, 95% CI: 3.82, 15.42), adolescent girls who were received permission from their family to take human papillomavirus vaccine (AOR = 4.49, 95% CI: 2.40, 8.43), adolescent girls who had good knowledge on human papillomavirus vaccine (AOR = 5.78, 95% CI: 3.18, 10.15), and adolescent girls who had favorable attitude toward human papillomavirus vaccine (AOR = 3.06, 95% CI: 1.73, 5.43) were positively associated with willingness to take human papillomavirus vaccine. Conclusion: Knowledge about cervical cancer and the human papillomavirus vaccine as well as willingness to take the human papillomavirus vaccine was low. Factors such as maternal education, adolescents’ discussion on sexual and reproductive health issues, parent approval of human papillomavirus vaccine, and knowledge and attitude toward human papillomavirus vaccine were significantly associated with willingness to take the human papillomavirus vaccine. Therefore, public health education regarding cervical cancer and human papillomavirus vaccination is still needed and has to be targeted at not only respondents but also their families.

IntroductionThe neonatal near-miss cases are subject to factors that are major causes of early neonatal deaths. For every death, more newborns suffer a life-threatening complication. Nearly 98% of neonatal death unduly existed in developing countries. Though there were few prior studies in other regions, they failed in identifying the factors of NNM. Besides, there has been no prior study in the study area. Therefore, this study aimed to assess factors associated with neonatal near-miss.MethodsA case-control study was employed on a total of 252 cases and 756 controls using a systematic random sampling technique. Data were collected using pre-tested and interview administered questionnaires adapted from similar studies and medical records from December 2020 -March 2021. Pragmatic and management criteria definition of neonatal near miss were utilized. Epi-Data version 3.1 and SPSS version 23 were used for data entry and analysis respectively. Bivariable and multivariable analyses were done to identify factors associated with a neonatal near-miss by using COR and AOR with a 95% confidence interval. Finally, the statistical significance was declared at a p-value < 0.05.ResultsThere were a response rate of 100% for both cases, and controls. Factors that affects neonatal near miss were non-governmental/private employee (AOR, 1.72[95%CI: 1.037, 2.859]), referral in (AOR, 1.51[95%CI: 1.079, 2.108]), multiple birth (AOR, 2.50[95%CI: 1.387, 4.501]), instrumental assisted delivery (AOR, 4.11[95%CI: 1.681, 10.034]), hypertensive during pregnancy (AOR, 3.32[95%CI: 1.987, 5.530]), and male neonates (AOR, 1.71[95%CI: 1.230, 2.373]), paternal education of secondary school (AOR, 0.43[95%CI: 0.210, 0.868]) and college/above (AOR, 0.25[95%CI: 0.109, 0.578]), monthly income (1500-3500 birr) (AOR, 0.29[95%CI: 0.105, 0.809]) and >3500 birr (AOR, 0.34[95%CI: 0.124, 0.906]).ConclusionMaternal occupation, paternal education, income, referral, multiple births, mode of delivery, hypertension during pregnancy, and sex of the neonate have identified factors with neonatal near-miss. Better to create job opportunities, improving education, and income generation. Counseling on multiple birth and hypertension, and minimizing instrumental delivery should be done at the health facility level.

This study was conducted to characterize honey produced in Sekota district in northern Ethiopia and to assess the effects of location (lowland, midland and highland) and hive type (modern zander-frame and traditional tube basket) on the quality of honey produced in the area. A total of 20 honey samples were collected from four locations in Sekota district. Reducing sugars, apparent sucrose, pH, moisture, ash, hydroxymethylfurfural, acidity and water-insoluble solids contents of the honey samples were analyzed. The pH of honey samples collected from the midland of the district was significantly higher than (p < 0.05) the pH of honey samples collected from lowland areas. Hive type significantly (p < 0.05) influenced the reducing sugars contents of the honey samples. The water-insoluble solids content of the honey samples analyzed in this study is above the maximum limit set by national and international standards for waterinsoluble solids content of honey. Although honey produced in Sekota district is generally of good quality, efforts need to be made to reduce the water-insoluble solids content of the honey. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
