Purpose: To investigate whether the risk of peripheral nerve stimulation increases in the presence of bulky metallic prostheses implanted in a patient's body. Methods: A computational tool was used to calculate the electric field (E‐field) induced in a realistic human model due to the action of gradient fields. The calculations were performed both on the original version of the anatomical model and on a version modified through "virtual surgery" to incorporate knee, hip, and shoulder prostheses. Five exam positions within a body gradient coil and one position using a head gradient coil were simulated, subjecting the human model to the readout gradient from an EPI sequence. The induced E‐field in models with and without prostheses was compared, focusing on the nerves and all other tissues (both including and excluding the bones from the analysis). Results: In the nerves, the most pronounced increase in the E‐field (+24%) was observed around the knee implant during an abdominal MRI (Y axis readout). When extending the analysis to encompass all tissues (excluding bones), the greatest amplification (+360%) occurred around the knee implant during pelvic MRI (Z axis readout). Notable increases in E‐field peaks were also identified around the shoulder and hip implants in multiple scenarios. Conclusion: Based on the presented results, further investigations aimed at quantifying the threshold of nerve stimulation in the presence of bulky implants are desirable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A major refurbishment of the toroidal complex of the RFX-mod device is in progress and it will include the removal of the Inconel vacuum vessel and a modification of the stainless steel supporting structure to be made vacuum-tight. The axisymmetric equilibrium control in RFX-mod was responsible for the control of the plasma current, horizontal and vertical position along with its stability and the plasma shape. The new implementation framework, both hardware and software, is described. The system has been fully reviewed and modified, if needed, for its prospective use in RFX-mod2. In order to run tests in an operation-like context, the updated system has also been implemented in the MARTe2 framework, to be deployed for the real-time applications of RFX-mod2. This article describes a novel and accurate implementation of finite element method-boundary element method (FEM-BEM) coupling based on Argyris element (AE), for the $C^{1}$ solution of axi-symmetric magnetostatic problems in open boundary domains. The aim of the work is twofold: 1) to provide novel, easy, and accurate way to compute the basis functions that is strongly not affected by accuracy errors and 2) to give a clear mathematical and numerical description of the FEM-BEM coupling based on AE. The first goal is achieved by shifting to the origin the physical triangular elements and computing the basis function in the shifted coordinate system. Second, AE-based FEM-BEM coupling relies on the boundary integral equations (BIEs) for poloidal flux and its partial derivatives of both first and second order, accurately computed by combining the analytical formula based on elliptic integrals together with high degree Gaussian cubature. The application of the proposed method to an advanced plasma equilibrium magnetic configuration, typical of magnetic confinement fusion (MCF) (i.e., snowflake configuration), highlights that, even in case of coarse triangulation, satisfactory results can be achieved, and the error on the boundary conditions (BCs) is well below machine working precision. The electromagnetic analysis of the superconducting multistrand cables used to manufacture magnets for fusion research is described. An analysis method is described, in which the cable represented as an equivalent lumped network, whose parameters are automatically computed starting from the cable geometrical data.

The research in the thermonuclear fusion area has entered the design phase of ITER, the first experimental Tokamak reactor. In the ITER device, the plasma shape and position are controlled by an active system on the basis of a real-time estimate of the plasma magnetic boundary. This identification process must be prompt and accurate enough to satisfy the tight control requirements. In this paper, a brief discussion about the reconstruction of the plasma boundary by means of the 'equivalent currents' (EC) method, in presence of conducting structures, will be presented. Some hints about a possible way to include the differential equations describing the vessel eddy currents will be illustrated. Index Terms--Eddy currents, nuclear fusion, plasma identification.

The aim of this article is to describe and model a sawtooth crash in RFX-mod2 and compute the eddy currents induced in the stabilizing shell surrounding the plasma for two alternative gap concepts and the subsequent error field. In this work, a surface current plasma model is coupled to a volume integral formulation for studying the interaction between tokamak tearing modes (TMs) and the machine metallic structures surrounding the plasma. The damping properties of NiTi elements produced through selective laser melting are investigated by tuning the process parameters. To this end, twelve parameters' sets are selected to fabricate fully‐dense NiTi specimens. Damping is evaluated through loss factor index, mechanical loading cycles (up to 104 cycles), solicitation frequency and strain amplitude. Results confirm that NiTi fabricated through selective laser‐beam melting is an excellent candidate to substitute conventional materials when used in the martensite phase. Furthermore, the selected process parameters enable specific damping performances that can be collected in damping maps which turn out to be practical tools for the fabrication of NiTi parts with tunable damping response. In patients with moderate-to-severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD), pulmonary hyperinflation can occur at rest and increase during episodes of exacerbation. Among other mechanical constraints, changes in position and configuration of the diaphragm are also induced by increased end-expiratory lung volume. Both descent and flattening of diaphragm might damage the phrenic nerves by stretching their fibers. The study aimed to investigate the phrenic nerve conduction in COPD patients in stable conditions and during COPD exacerbation. In a group of 11 COPD patients without relevant comorbidities in stable conditions and subsequently in another group of 10 COPD patients during in-hospital COPD exacerbation and recovery, measurements of functional respiratory parameters and assessment of phrenic nerves motor conduction by bilateral electric stimulation were performed concurrently. Significant increase in phrenic nerves latency (p < 0.05), but similar amplitude of motor compound muscle action potential (cMAP) was observed in stable COPD patients vs. matched controls (p < 0.05). However, in COPD patients with resting pulmonary hyperinflation as reliably detected by substantial Inspiratory Capacity reduction (<80% pred.), the mean bilateral latency was longer vs. COPD patients without pulmonary hyperinflation (p < 0.02). During COPD exacerbation, in contrast with mean latency, the mean amplitude of phrenic nerves cMAP improved at discharge when compared with in-hospital admission (p < 0.05). In stable COPD patients the velocity of phrenic nerve conduction was impaired mostly in the presence of pulmonary hyperinflation, while during COPD exacerbation where dynamic pulmonary hyperinflation abruptly occurs, the reversible decrease of cMAP amplitude does suggest a temporary, acute axonal damage of phrenic nerves, potentially contributing to diaphragmatic dysfunction in these circumstances. The partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method is applied to a frequency-sweep study for investigating the resonant modes of planar spiral resonators. A low-rank approximation algorithm, based on hierarchical matrices, is coupled to the method in order to reduce the computational effort due to the use of dense matrices. Low-rank approximation techniques are useful approaches to reduce the computational effort required by integral equations methods. Here, two different libraries based on hierarchical-matrices and hierarchically semi-separable matrices are applied to the partial element equivalent circuit method for the study of high-frequency electromagnetic problems. Fibre optic (FO) sensors are becoming increasingly popular for different applications in structural monitoring. Among their excellent properties, a strong interest for this type of sensors are represented by the possibility of embedding FOs inside composite components. In this case, one of the factors that significantly influence the efficiency of the whole Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system is the interfacial adhesion between FO sensors and the host material. The main objective of this work is to investigate the interfacial adhesion between embedded fibre optic sensors and epoxy matrix to find the best type of optical fibre to be used in epoxy matrices to produce smart composites. Four types of optical fibres with different diameters and coatings (i.e. polyimide, polyacrylate and ormoceramic) were used. Pull-out tests were carried out and different methods were used to obtain the composite/optical fibre interfacial properties. Finally, an optical microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis were performed to characterize the fibre/matrix interfaces. It was found that the optical fibre that presented the highest energy required for interface rupture and, consequently, less invasiveness to the host material was the ormoceramic fibre with the smallest diameter. The plasma configuration in tokamaks is created and controlled by magnetic fields generated by the external coils. Similarly, plasma macroscopic parameters are determined using sensors measuring magnetic field or magnetic flux. Some algorithms require separation of the plasma contribution from the contribution of poloidal field coils and currents induced in passive structures. In this paper, an efficient, real-time applicable method is introduced. The method is based on the identification of a state-space model in vacuum shots using both experimental and finite-element model data. The tests were performed for ISTTOK and RFX-mod. In , a simple method for plasma position determination for ISTTOK is proposed. We show that the centroid position measurement by magnetic diagnostics is feasible using our algorithm for separation of the plasma signal. This paper describes an approach for the magnetic reconstruction of large-scale tokamak devices that is suitable for real-time employment in order to provide reference for active control action during the whole plasma evolution. This problem can be seen as a free boundary problem, where the shape features of the plasma are determined by the equilibrium with the external sources, namely, the active circuit currents and the eddy currents flowing in the passive structures. In this respect, a dynamic model is needed to estimate the induced currents and provide a consistent representation of the whole system behavior during the entire plasma discharge. Such a model is then coupled with an iterative optimization procedure to provide a model of the plasma that, superimposed with the external sources, minimizes the error of the reconstructed magnetic map with reference to the available sensor measurements. The analysis and validation of this approach are presented, resulting in a procedure that appears to accurately follow the behavior of the system during both slow varying evolution and strongly dynamic events. We present an effective technique to solve eddy current problems on the conductors of arbitrary topology by an iterative geometric formulation suitable for an arbitrary polyhedral mesh. The formulation is based on the reformulation of the volume integral formulation in a form suitable to be solved by fixed point iterations. Given that nowadays, the computation of Biot–Savart fields can be performed efficiently on graphics processing units, the right-hand side of the systems is constructed at each fixed point iteration without computing the inductance matrix, which is fully populated. The proposed technique is useful in eddy current problems at industrial frequency where meshing the complement of conductors is hard, thus representing a sound alternative to integral formulations. An innovative approach has been recently proposed for the voltage breakdown prediction in high-voltage systems, insulated by large vacuum gaps. This approach is based on complementary geometric formulations for electrostatics coupled to the analytical solution of the equations of motion for charged particles. Integral formulations are attractive for solving eddy-current problems in complex electromagnetic systems, since they do not require the discretization of the complement of the conducting structures. The objective of this work is to present a conceptual design and the modelling of a distributed sensor system based on fiber optic devices (Fiber Bragg Grating, FBG), aimed at measuring span-wise and chord-wise variations of an adaptive (morphing) trailing edge. The network is made of two different integrated solutions for revealing deformations of the reference morphing structure. Strains are confined to typical values along the span (length) but they are expected to overcome standard ranges along the chord (width), up to almost 10%. In this case, suitable architectures may introduce proper modulations to keep the measured deformation low while preserving the information content. In the current paper, the designed monitoring system combines the use of a span-wise fiber reinforced patch with a chord-wise sliding beam. The two elements make up a closed grid, allowing the reconstruction of the complete deformed shape under the acceptable assumption that the transformation refers to regular geometry variations. The design, manufacturing, and preliminary testing of a smart patch sensor named MonitoRing are herein presented. The sensor is conceived to identify amplitude and direction of structural loads by distributed strain profile detection along its circular geometry. The sensor is manufactured by using flexible glass/epoxy laminates hosting a single standard telecom fiber optic. The fiber optic is embedded according to three loops, different by radius and quote. The sensor is then externally bonded on a structural element and able to follow the deformations under tensile and bending loading condition. The optical Rayleigh backscattering technology provides an interrogation of strain with high spatial resolution all along the fiber path. The load and direction identification is hence, provided by comparing amplitude, phase and sign of deformation spectrum of each loop. Magnetic diagnostics are essential for the operation and understanding of a magnetic confinement fusion (MCF) device, for example, by providing in real-time, the axisymmetric measurements needed for plasma equilibrium reconstructions or magnetohydrodynamic instabilities control. In this paper, we present a fast and robust implementation on GPU architecture of an accurate algorithm suitable for the computation of synthetic magnetic measurements used both in real time applications and off-line reconstruction procedures. This paper presents a robust technique, based on Krylov-subspace method, for the reduction of large-scale state-space models arising in many electromagnetic applications in fusion machines. The proposed approach, built on the Arnoldi algorithm, aims at reducing the number of states of the system and lowering the computational effort, with a negligible loss of accuracy in the numerical solution. This paper proposes the use of hierarchical matrices (H-matrices) with adaptive cross approximation for the solution of the very large sparse/dense block linear systems typically arising in hybrid differential/integral formulations applied to bioelectromagnetic problems, which make use of large scale human models. The code implementing this approach is described in detail and the usefulness of the approach is first demonstrated on a benchmark provided with an analytical solution and then applied to a magnetic resonance imaging problem. This paper presents a novel technique to perform the topological pre-processing needed in formulations based on an electric vector potential and a magnetic scalar potential when the eddy-current problem being solved is subject to periodic boundary conditions. In this case, in fact, all the techniques to produce the generators for the first cohomology group introduced in the literature cannot be used directly on the input mesh.
