University-Industry Linkage (UIL) is the interaction of academic or research universities and industries of different sectors for complementary benefits. This paper presents the results of a study conducted to understand the present status and challenges of UIL in the Regional State of Tigray, Ethiopia. Using convergent parallel mixed research design, the study addressed two research questions: (1) what is the status of UIL in the Regional State of Tigray, Ethiopia? (2) what are the UIL challenges facing universities and industries in the Regional State of Tigray, Ethiopia? Respondents were recruited from two universities and eight industries of different business areas including service, manufacturing, finance and energy. A survey questionnaire and interview protocols were developed by adapting items used in previous studies and distributed to a sample size of 1350. The findings show that there are occasional collaborations between the universities and industries in the Region mostly focusing on internship and training. Although communications and meetings are conducted between the universities and industries to create UIL opportunities in Tigray, signed collaboration agreements remain mostly on the shelf mainly due to lack of due attention and commitment from both sides in taking the step forward. Therefore, awareness creation measures and sound policy framework and guidelines should be in place for effective and practical collaborations to exist and get realized.

Fluoride-ion batteries have several potential advantages over lithium-ion batteries. Materials development is still needed, however, to realize electrolytes with sufficiently high anion conductivity and compatibility with anode and cathode layers. Fluoride compounds are difficult to synthesize directly as single crystals but can be realized from oxide film precursors via topotactic chemistry techniques. Here, we create crystalline alkaline earth bismuth fluoride films BaBiF5 and SrBiF5 through oxide molecular beam epitaxy and topotactic fluorination. We characterize their ionic conductivities and demonstrate their potential as electrolytes. Finally, we realize epitaxial synthesis of BaBiF5 on BaF2 substrates, providing a route to thin film fluoride-ion battery devices.

Abstract Malnutrition among women of reproductive age is a critical public health issue in LMICs, where undernutrition coexists with rising overweight and obesity rates. In Ethiopia, particularly among urban women, maternal and child undernutrition remains high despite efforts to combat poverty and food insecurity. This study examined the relationship between food affordability and the nutritional status of 4797 women in Addis Ababa. Using repeated cross-sectional surveys, body mass index was calculated, and women’s nutritional status was categorized. Data on the affordability of 11 healthy family food groups were collected and categorized into terciles. Multinomial logistic regression models analyzed the association between food affordability and nutritional status, adjusting for confounding factors. The prevalence of underweight among women was 7.3%, while 39.1% were overweight or obese. On average, families could afford 6.1 out of the 11 food groups. Women with higher food affordability had increased odds of being overweight (AOR: 1.32; 95% CI 1.09, 1.60) or obese (AOR: 1.50; 95% CI 1.14, 1.97). The findings highlight that two out of five women are either overweight or obese, with obesity more likely in those with greater perceived food affordability. Addressing food choices as food affordability improves is crucial, as better food affordability is associated with an increased risk of becoming overweight and obese.

Background: The potential for broadening participation in engineering among Black undergraduates via transfer pathways is considerable, given their large share of the community college population. By understanding the opportunities and challenges presented within the context of transfer, this potential can be realized. Purpose/hypothesis: The goal of this study is to explore ways in which Black students who transitioned from a community college to a 4-year engineering program describe the institutional factors affecting their transfer processes. Design/method: Drawing from a 3-year qualitative research study involving approximately 27 Black engineering transfer students at a large, predominantly White, institution, we present data derived through interviews and focus groups with these undergraduates. Results: Participants expressed that they benefited from supportive institutional agents who offered engineering transfer-related resources. These included both faculty and advisors in their mostly Minority Serving Community Colleges (MSCCs) as well as advisors from the engineering college at the 4-year institution. In addition, respondents described being part of a number of community college programs, including some for Black collegians, that offered resources for transfer. Nonetheless, some participants shared problems that emerged during the transfer process, including having to self-navigate confusing transfer websites or self-advocate to resolve erroneous admissions decisions. Conclusions: We suggest a need to elevate MSCCs as learning environments that can produce future Black engineers. We also recommend a systems-level approach that brings together community colleges and 4-year institutions while also accounting for issues related to resources as well as power dynamics that students may encounter.

Introduction Ambient particulate matter (PM) air pollution is considered to be one of the greatest environmental threats to human health due to its near ubiquity and widespread effects. (1) In [...], BACKGROUND: Emerging literature suggests that fine particulate matter [with aerodynamic diameter [less than or equal to]2.5 [micro]m ([PM.sub.2.5])] air pollution and its components are linked to various neurodevelopmental outcomes. However, few studies have evaluated how [PM.sub.2.5] component mixtures from distinct sources relate to cognitive outcomes in children. OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study investigated how ambient concentrations of [PM.sub.2.5] component mixtures relate to neurocognitive performance in 9- to 10-year-old children, as well as explored potential source-specific effects of these associations, across the US. METHODS: Using spatiotemporal hybrid models, annual concentrations of 15 chemical components of [PM.sub.2.5] were estimated based on the residential address of child participants from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. General cognitive ability, executive function, and learning/memory scores were derived from the NIH Toolbox. We applied positive matrix factorization to identify six major [PM.sub.2.5] sources based on the 15 components, which included crustal, ammonium sulfate, biomass burning, traffic, ammonium nitrate, and industrial/residual fuel burning. We then utilized weighted quantile sum (WQS) and linear regression models to investigate associations between [PM.sub.2.5] components' mixture, their potential sources, and children's cognitive scores. RESULTS: Mixture modeling revealed associations between cumulative exposure and worse cognitive performance across all three outcome domains, including shared overlap in detrimental effects driven by ammonium nitrates, silicon, and calcium. Using the identified six sources of exposure, source-specific negative associations were identified between ammonium nitrates and learning & memory, traffic and executive function, and crustal and industrial mixtures and general cognitive ability. Unexpected positive associations were also seen between traffic and general ability as well as biomass burning and executive function. DISCUSSION: This work suggests nuanced associations between outdoor [PM.sub.2.5] exposure and childhood cognitive performance, including important differences in cognition related both to individual chemicals as well as to specific sources of these exposures. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP14418

Abstract Real-world data on treatment outcomes or the quality of large-scale chronic hepatitis B (CHB) treatment programs in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is extremely difficult to obtain. In this study, we aimed to provide data on the prevalence and incidence of mortality, loss to follow-up (LFTU), and their associated factors in patients with CHB in three treatment centres in Eritrea. Additional information includes baseline clinical profiles of CHB patients initiated on nucleos(t)ide analogue (NUCs) along with a comparison of treatment with Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) vs. TDF + Lamuvudine (LAM) using specific biochemical, haematological and virologic parameters. A multicenter retrospective cohort study was conducted on CHB patients in Asmara, Eritrea (2018–2021). Demographic, clinical, and laboratory information was collected from medical records using a structured checklist. Relevant parametric and nonparametric statistics were employed to explore treatment outcomes and to evaluate differences between groups. Abstract Background Childhood is a period marked by dynamic growth. Evidence of the association between childhood linear growth and school achievement comes mostly from cross-sectional data. We assessed associations between birth length, childhood linear growth velocities, and stunting with school achievement. Methods Newborns were recruited into the Ethiopian infant Anthropometry and Body Composition (iABC) birth cohort and followed from birth to 10 years. Velocities from 0 to 6 years were computed using linear spline mixed effect modelling. Stunting (height-for-age < -2 z-scores) was assessed at the ages of 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 years. School achievement was measured by having a high (≥ 80%) combined high math, English, and science (MES) score and being at appropriate grade-for-age. Logistic regression models assessed associations between birth length, linear growth velocities and stunting with school achievement. Results Children’s mean age was 9.8 years (standard deviation, SD 1.0, range 7–12 years). A 1 SD greater birth length increased the odds of achieving a high MES combined score by 1.42 (95% CI: 0.99, 2.03). A 1 SD increase in linear growth velocity from 6 to 24 months increased the odds of being in the appropriate grade-for-age by 1.66 (95% CI: 1.14, 2.43). Stunting at ages 4 and 6 years was associated with lower odds of achieving a high MES combined score: 0.43 (95% CI: 0.20, 0.93) and 0.31 (95% CI: 0.11, 0.89), respectively. Faster post-natal linear growth was not associated with school achievement. Conclusion Greater birth length and higher growth velocity from 6 to 24 months were associated with higher school achievement and being in the appropriate grade-for-age, respectively. Children who experienced growth failure were less likely to achieve a high MES score. Interventions aimed at improving school achievement should address maternal and fetal nutrition and health, and monitor post-natal growth.

Abstract Background There is widespread enthusiasm for scaling interventions to strengthen health systems. However, little is known about the scalability of such interventions in Africa. In this study, we seek to assess the scalability of interventions for improving the functionality of health systems in Africa, as a key to large-scale implementation strategy of interventions with potential for impact. Methods The study will deploy a multi-pronged approach, grounded in an integrated knowledge translation (iKT) approach. First, a multidisciplinary steering committee will be established, involving key female and male stakeholders in all stages of our study from its inception and as equal members of the research team for overseeing the project. Second, as part of the RAND/University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Appropriateness Method, evidence from a published systematic review will be used to develop the African Scalability Assessment Framework (AFROSAF), a series of multiple attributes for assessing the ability to scale a health system intervention in Africa. Third, the content of the AFROSAF will be validated using Delphi survey (within a deliberative dialogue) following the Lavis’ framework for knowledge transfer and a conceptual framework developed by Boyko et al. a multi-stakeholder consensus exercise with experts from Africa will be convened. The Likert scaled scalability attributes developed will be rated and descriptive statistics and hierarchical cluster analysis will be used to synthesize the data. Finally, document analyses will be conducted to rate to which extent each intervention has data that meet criteria responding to the essential components of scalability using the AFROSAF. We will conduct an analysis to score and rank each intervention for scalability. Discussion This project proposes an approach aiming to catalyse the scale of interventions for effective functionality of health systems in Africa. The process will yield a scalability assessment tool for Africa and inventory scalable interventions. The findings will help African countries and policymakers understand the parameters to use and assess health system interventions for scaling.

Biochar is a useful bioproduct with a wide range of promising applications. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of pyrolysis temperatures on the physicochemical properties of biochar produced from pine wood using a slow pyrolysis methodology. Fourier transfer infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis uncovered that the biochar synthesized at the different temperatures selected possessed distinct functional groups. The elemental analysis confirmed that an increase in pyrolysis temperature led to a rise in the carbon (C) concentration, whereas conversely there is a reciprocal decrease in the levels of oxygen (O) and hydrogen (H). Consequently, biochar produced at high temperatures showed low (O/C) and (H/C) fractions. Surface area (gas adsorption) studies indicated that the biochar surface area and pore volume increase at higher pyrolysis temperature. In contrast, the pore size was found to decrease at high temperatures. It was found that increased pyrolysis temperature resulted in reduced biochar yield. Biochar for use in specific applications like as an adsorbent material is ultimately influenced by the pyrolysis temperature. Therefore, it can be concluded that the results of the current study enhances the understanding on the effect of pyrolysis temperature on biochar synthesis and how different parameters can be used to tailor the material characteristics for specific applications.

The influence of breed type (purebred vs. crossbred), sex (short-scrotum ram vs. ewe lamb), and supplementation (pasture-only vs. pasture plus 2% soy hull) on carcass and meat quality of landrace hair (Barbados Blackbelly; BB and St. Croix; SX) and wool (Dorset; DO) × hair sheep lambs was evaluated. Forty-eight, mixed sex 5-mo old purebred hair (body weight (BW) = 17.9 ± 1.95 kg) and crossbred (wool × hair) sheep lambs (BW = 21.7 ± 2.56 kg) rationally grazed predominantly tall fescue pasture during summer with or without soy hull supplementation at 2% of BW. At the end of a 90-d grazing trial, lambs were harvested using the USDA standard procedures and their carcasses were evaluated. After 24 h chilling storge (2°C), longissimus muscle (LM) pH was measured, and carcasses were fabricated into primal cuts. Loin chops and fat depots were collected to analyse meat quality parameters. Supplementation rather than crossbreeding had more significant effect on carcass quality under the conditions of this experiment. Regardless of breed type, soy hull supplementation improved colour, lipid oxidation stability and texture properties of fresh lamb, whereas pasture-only lambs had healthier fatty acid profiles compared with those from supplemented lambs.

Abstract Background Tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health challenge in Ethiopia. TB treatment outcomes were suboptimal compared to the expected target of the national TB control Program. The provision of standard anti-TB treatment is the primary component of the directly observed treatment, short-course strategy. The aim of this study was to assess the TB treatment outcomes and the determinants of an unfavorable treatment outcome. The study used a cross-sectional study design at baseline and record review to identify treatment outcomes. A total of 1,161 TB patients were recruited from eight randomly selected districts and one town administration in the Jimma Zone, Ethiopia. Treatment outcomes were grouped into favorable and unfavorable. Of the total participants, 86.9% had a favorable treatment outcome, and 5.7% an unfavorable treatment outcome. The rest were transferred out and not recorded cases. Women were more likely to experience an unfavorable treatment outcome [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.96, 95% CI 1.06, 3.64]. Patients who were perceived to not be stigmatized were less likely to have an unfavorable treatment outcome (AOR = 0.32, 95% CI 0.15, 0.73). Patients who had a monthly income of > 3,500 Ethiopian birr were less likely to have an unfavorable outcome than patients who did not have a regular income (AOR = 0.04, 95% CI 0.01, 0.45). The observed treatment success rate is lower than the World Health Organization’s target of successfully treating > 90% of detected TB cases. It is imperative to ensure that information, education and communication/behavior change communication strategies consider the needs of women and patients with perceived TB stigma. Furthermore, designing locally acceptable and affordable interventions may help to address the financial challenges of TB treatment adherence.

Abstract Background Poor maternal nutrition is a significant public health problem, especially in conflict-affected areas. Lactating mothers are particularly vulnerable due to increased nutritional demands. The recent conflict in the Tigray region has resulted in serious crises and disruptions, worsening maternal undernutrition. Objective This study aimed to determine the post-war nutritional status of lactating mothers, in Tigray, Ethiopia, 2024. Methods A household-based cross-sectional study was conducted from January 16 to February 14, 2024, across six zones of Tigray, excluding the Western zone, which included 1245 lactating mothers with children under six months of age. Data were collected through a structured interview-based questionnaire designed in KoboToolBox. The collected data were managed and analyzed via Stata version 17 software. Descriptive statistics and bivariate and multivariable robust (modified) Poisson regression models were fitted to identify the factors associated with maternal undernutrition, after checking the necessary model assumptions. Adjusted prevalence rates with 95% confidence intervals were used as measures of effects and statistical significance. Results The prevalence of undernutrition among lactating mothers was 55.2% (95% CI: 52.3–58.1). The proportion of undernourished lactating mothers was greater in rural areas (60.7%: 57.3–64.0) than in urban (41.8%: 36.5–47.2). The factors independently associated with maternal undernutrition included elementary education [aPR (95% C.I): 1.1(1.01–1.3)], rural residence [aPR (95% C.I): 1.3(1.1–1.5)], iodized salt use [aPR (95% C.I): 0.9(0.8–0.99)], and low meal frequency [aPR (95% C.I): 1.3(1.2–1.5)]. Conclusions This study revealed a high maternal undernutrition prevalence among lactating mothers in Tigray in the post-conflict era. Therefore, interventions targeting educational opportunities, iodized salt use, and adequate meal frequency may help improve the nutritional status of lactating mothers in the conflict-affected areas in Tigray, Ethiopia.

Abstract Background Stunting remains a considerable public health problem globally, and sex differences in prevalence have been documented. While many risk factors for stunting have been identified, few studies examine how these factors may contribute to sex differences. We test whether: (1) boys and girls are differentially exposed to stunting risk factors, (2) boys and girls respond differently to similar exposures, and (3) these associations are sensitive to the growth measures used. Methods Data comes from 7486 Zambian infants, aged 0–23 months, participating in the SUN (Scaling Up Nutrition) 2.0 Program baseline survey. Surveys and dietary recalls were collected from primary caregivers, and anthropometry was collected for caregivers and children. Stunting was defined as height-for-age z-score (HAZ)

Abstract Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b viruses were first detected in St. John’s, Canada in late 2021. To investigate the patterns of avian influenza virus (AIV) infection and immune responses subsequent to the arrival of H5N1, we sampled the wild urban duck population in this area for a period of 16 months after the start of the outbreak and compared these findings to those from archived samples. Antibody seroprevalence was relatively stable before the outbreak (2011–2014) at 27.6% and 3.9% for anti-AIV (i.e., NP) and H5-specific antibodies, respectively. During the winter of 2022, AIV-NP and H5-specific antibody seroprevalence both reached 100%, signifying a population-wide infection event, which was observed again in late February 2023 following a second H5N1 incursion from Eurasia. As expected, population-level immunity waned over time, with ducks seropositive for anti-AIV-NP antibodies for approximately twice as long as for H5-specific antibodies, with the population seronegative to the latter after approximately six months. We observed a clear relationship of increasing antibody levels with decreasing viral RNA loads that allowed for interpretation of the course of infection and immune response in infected individuals and applied these findings to two cases of resampled ducks to infer infection history. Our study highlights the value of applying both AIV surveillance and seroprevalence monitoring to provide a better understanding of AIV dynamics in wild populations, which may be crucial following the global dissemination of clade 2.3.4.4b H5Nx subtypes to assess the threats they pose to both wild and domestic animals, and to humans.

Introduction Maternal undernutrition and inflammation in utero may significantly impact the neurodevelopmental potential of offspring. However, few studies have investigated the effects of pregnancy interventions on long-term child growth and development. This study will examine the effects of prenatal nutrition and infection management interventions on long-term growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes of offspring.Methods The Enhancing Nutrition and Antenatal Infection Treatment (‘ENAT’) study (ISRCTN15116516) was a pragmatic, open-label, 2×2 factorial, randomised clinical effectiveness study implemented in 12 rural health centres in Amhara, Ethiopia. The study enrolled 2399 pregnant women who were randomised to receive routine care, an enhanced nutrition package (iron and folic acid, monthly household supply of iodised salt, and micronutrient-fortified balanced energy protein supplement for undernourished women), an enhanced infection management package (genitourinary tract infection screening and treatment, and enhanced deworming), or both packages. In the present Longitudinal Infant Development and Growth study, a subset of 480 children of mothers from ENAT will be recruited equally from each of the four study arms and visited at 12, 18, and 24 months of postnatal age. We will evaluate a range of domains and deploy multiple measures to assess child neurodevelopment, including resting electroencephalography and visual evoked potentials, Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination, eye-tracking, Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development (Bayley-III), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).Discussion This study will advance understanding of the impact of nutrition and inflammation in pregnancy on long-term offspring neurodevelopment. This study aims to fill a critical knowledge gap on the benefits of prenatal interventions to promote the health of mothers and their offspring.Ethics and dissemination This study was approved by the Institutional Review Boards of Addis Continental Institute of Public Health (ACIPH/IRB/002/2022) and Mass General Brigham (2023P000461). Results will be disseminated to local and international stakeholders.Trial registration number NCT06296238.

Plantations of fast-growing tree species are important in climate change mitigation efforts because of their enormous potential for carbon storage and the potential affected mainly by tree species type and composition, which influence particular carbon pools in the system. This study estimates biomass and soil organic carbon (SOC) under selected fast-growing tree species in Ethiopia's Diksis district, Oromia region. Major parameters, height (H) and diameter at breast height (DBH), were measured in permanently sampled plots (9mx9m) with three replications to evaluate the biomass carbon stock of selected species. Soil samples (0–15 and 15-30 cm) were also collected to determine soil organic carbon (SOC) and bulk density. Above and below-ground biomass (AGB) and (BGB) were calculated using the site and species-specific allometric equations, and SOC was analysed using appropriate procedures in the laboratory. The results showed that the highest total biomass carbon stock was recorded for Eucalyptus globulus (5.7Mg C ha-1), and the lowest was recorded for Eucalyptus grandis (1.2 Mg C ha-1). Amongst the studied tree species, the highest and lowest mean total soil organic carbon (SOC) was recorded for Eucalyptus saligna (60 Mg C ha-1) and Eucalyptus viminalis (35.4 Mg C ha-1), respectively. The study also revealed that plantation sites could enhance carbon stock accumulation in biomass and soil organic carbon. Hence, considering that incorporating fast-growing tree species in plantations is helpful in climate change mitigation strategies is a preeminent approach beyond their economic values.

Abstract Background The severity of infectious disease outcomes is dependent on the virulence factors of the pathogen and the host immune response. CARD8 is a major regulator of the innate immune proinflammatory response and has been suggested to modulate the host response to common inflammatory diseases. In the present study, the C10X genetic polymorphism in the CARD8 gene was investigated in relation to bacterial meningitis. Methods A total of 400 clinically suspected meningitis patients hospitalized at the University of Gondar Hospital were enrolled in the study. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood samples were collected for laboratory investigations. The collected CSF was cultured, and all the results obtained from the culture were confirmed using direct RT‒PCR. Genotyping of whole-blood samples was performed using a TaqMan assay. The results were compared with apparently healthy controls and with PCR-negative meningitis suspected patients. Results Of the included patients, 57% were men and the most common clinical signs and symptoms were fever (81%), headache (80%), neck stiffness (76%), nausea (68%), and vomiting (67%). Microbiology culture identified 7 patients with bacterial meningitis caused by Neisseria meningitidis (n = 4) and Streptococcus pneumoniae (n = 3). The RT-PCR revealed 39 positive samples for N. meningitidis (n = 10) and S. pneumoniae (n = 29). A total of 332 whole-blood samples were genotyped with the following results: 151 (45.5%) C10X heterozygotes, 59 (17.7%) C10X homozygotes and 122 (36.7%) wild genotypes. The polymorphic gene carriers among laboratory confirmed, clinically diagnosed meningitis and healthy controls were 23(46%), 246(40%), and 1526(39%), respectively with OR = 1.27 (0.7–2.3) and OR = 1.34 (0.76–2.4). The presence of the C10X polymorphism in the CARD8 gene was more prevalent in suspected meningitis patients than in healthy controls (OR 1.2; 1.00-1.5). Homozygote C10X polymorphic gene carriers were more susceptible to infectious disease. The presence of viable or active bacterial infection was found to be associated with the presence of heterozygous C10X carriers. Conclusions A greater proportion of C10X in the CARD8 gene in confirmed bacterial meningitis patients and clinically diagnosed meningitis patients than in healthy controls. Homozygote C10X polymorphic gene carriers were more susceptible to infectious disease than heterozygote gene carriers and healthy controls.

Abstract The armed conflict in Tigray, which spanned from November 2020 to November 2022, along with the accompanying siege, led to the near-total collapse of Tigray’s healthcare system. Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, the most common chronic condition in children, requires significant lifestyle adjustments, including daily insulin injections, regular glucose monitoring, and dietary modifications; all of which are severely impacted by war and siege. This study compared Type 1 diabetes care for children at the Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Tigray, during the conflict and siege period with that of the pre-war period. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional survey, analyzing data from September 2019 to August 2020 (pre-war period) and comparing it with data from September 2021 to August 2022 (war and siege period). Descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages, were employed, and Pearson’s or Spearman’s correlation analyses were used to evaluate correlations where appropriate. We identified 143 pediatric patients admitted (56 during the pre-war period and 87 during the war and siege period), with a mean age of 109 months in both periods. During the war and siege, a higher proportion of diabetes admissions were due to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) (90%) compared to the pre-war period (75%). In the pre-war period, the most common trigger for DKA was infections (35%), while in the war and siege period, it shifted to malnutrition (47%), infections (46%), lack of access to healthcare facilities (31%), and running out of medicines (24%). Complications such as death, renal failure, cerebral edema, and shock were more prevalent during the war and siege periods. The case fatality rate was significantly higher during the war and siege (9%) compared to the pre-war period (0%), correlating strongly with the severity of DKA, the degree of hypokalemia, the presence of complications, and admission during the war and siege. Our study showed the negative impact of war and siege on diabetes care in children demonstrating a high rate of DKA admissions with increased severity, complications, malnutrition, and case fatality rates. People with diabetes especially type 1 deserve great attention during such a crisis as the lack of insulin could lead to severe complications including death.

Rainfall variability coupled with poor land and water management is contributing to food insecurity in many sub-Saharan African countries such as Ethiopia. To address such challenges, various efforts have been implemented in Ethiopia. The objective of this study was to evaluate the long-term impacts of different soil and water conservation and water harvesting interventions on groundwater and drought resilience of the Gule watershed, northern Ethiopia. The study involved: (i) documentation of the approaches followed and the technologies implemented in Gule since the 1990s, (ii) monitoring the hydrological effects of the interventions for ten years, and (iii) evaluation of the effects of the interventions on groundwater (level and quality), spring discharge and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in runoff. Results showed that interventions were implemented at different stages and scales. As a result of the interventions, the watershed was transformed into a landscape resilient to rainfall variability: (a) dry shallow groundwater wells have become productive and the level of water in wells has raised, (b) the groundwater quality has improved, (c) SSC in high floods has reduced by up to 65%, (d) discharge of existing springs has increased by up to 73% and new springs have started to emerge. Due to improved water availability, irrigated land has increased from less than 3.5 ha before 2002 to 166 ha in 2019. Communities have remained water-secure during an extreme drought in 2015/2016. Implementation of watershed management practices has transformed the landscape to be resilient to rainfall variability in a semi-arid environment: a lesson for adaptation to climate variability and change in similar environments.

Abstract Current poultry vaccines against influenza A viruses target the globular head region of the hemagglutinin (HA1), providing limited protection against antigenically divergent strains. Experimental subunit vaccines based on the conserved ectodomain of the matrix protein 2 (M2e) induce cross-reactive antibody responses, but fail to fully prevent virus shedding after low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) virus challenge, and are ineffective against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses. This study assessed the benefits of combining nanoparticles bearing three tandem M2e repeats (NR-3M2e nanorings or NF-3M2e nanofilaments) with an HA1 subunit vaccine in protecting chickens against a heterologous HPAI H5N1 virus challenge. Chickens vaccinated with the combined formulations developed M2e and HA1-specific antibodies, were fully protected from clinical disease and mortality, and showed no histopathological lesions or virus shedding, unlike those given only HA1, NR-3M2e, or NF-3M2e. Thus, the combined vaccine formulations provided complete cross-protection against HPAI H5N1 virus, and prevented environmental virus shedding, crucial for controlling avian influenza outbreaks.

Abstract Cell state control is crucial for normal tissue development and cancer cell mimicry of stem/progenitor states, contributing to tumor heterogeneity, therapy resistance, and progression. Here, we demonstrate that the cell surface glycoprotein Mcam maintains the tumorigenic luminal progenitor (LP)-like epithelial cell state, leading to Basal-like mammary cancers. In the Py230 mouse mammary carcinoma model, Mcam knockdown (KD) destabilized the LP state by deregulating the Ck2/Stat3 axis, causing a switch to alveolar and basal states, loss of an estrogen-sensing subpopulation, and resistance to tamoxifen—an effect reversed by Ck2 and Stat3 inhibitors. In vivo, Mcam KD blocked generation of Basal-like tumors and Sox10+Krt14+ cells. In human tumors, MCAM loss was largely exclusive of the Basal-like subtype, linked instead to proliferative Luminal subtypes, including often endocrine-resistant Luminal B cancers. This study has implications for developing therapies targeting MCAM, CK2, and STAT3 and their likely effective contexts.

Abstract Background HIV/AIDS has left a profound impact, leading to significant mortality, morbidity, economic strain, and disability on a global scale. The introduction of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has played a pivotal role in mitigating the economic burden of HIV and enhancing overall productivity. However, the emergence of virological failure presents a critical contemporary challenge within global health, reflecting the complexity of effectively managing HIV treatment outcomes in the 21st century. Methods An institutional based, cross-sectional study was conducted. Data were collected using a pretested, structured checklist. Data were edited and cleaned using Microsoft Excel 2016 and analyzed using SPSS version 25. Baseline demographic and clinical data were summarized using descriptive statistics. Multiple logistic regression analysis was run to identify association between dependent and independent variables, by computing odds ratio and 95% confidence interval. A p-value
