(1) Background: We aimed to assess the validity of laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) as an emerging method to measure the local pulse wave velocity (PWV) from skin displacement generated by the pressure pulse inside an underlying artery. (2) Methods: A finite element model representing a simplified common carotid artery embedded within a soft tissue mimicking material was used to reproduce how tissue motions due to a wave propagation along the artery radiates to the skin surface. A parametric study was set up, varying: (i) the pressure conditions inside the artery (shock and traveling pressure impulse), (ii) the arterial depth and (iii) the geometry in a patient-specific artery model. (3) Results: under all conditions, the arterial pulse induced primary and secondary waves at the skin surface; of which the propagation speed deviated from the imposed PWV (deviations between −5.0% to 47.0% for the primary wave front). (4) Conclusions: the propagation of a short pressure impulse induced complex skin displacement patterns revealing a complicated link between PWV and measured propagation speeds at the skin surface. Wave propagation at the skin level may convey information about arterial PWV, however, advanced signal analysis techniques will be necessary to extract local PWV values.

Abstract  The introduction of drug-eluting stents (DES) has reduced the occurrence of restenosis in coronary arteries. However, restenosis remains a problem in stented coronary bifurcations. This study investigates and compares three different second generation DESs when being implanted in the curved main branch of a coronary bifurcation with the aim of providing better insights into the related changes of the mechanical environment. The 3D bifurcation model is based on patient-specific angiographic data that accurately reproduce the in vivo curvatures of the vessel segments. The layered structure of the arterial wall and its anisotropic mechanical behavior are taken into account by applying a novel algorithm to define the fiber orientations. An innovative simulation strategy considering the insertion of a folded balloon catheter over a guide wire is proposed in order to position the stents within the curved vessel. Straightening occurs after implantation of all stents investigated. The resulting distributions of the wall stresses are strongly dependent on the stent design. Using a parametric modeling approach, two design modifications, which reduce the predicted maximum values of the wall stress, are proposed and analyzed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Finite element simulations of high strain rate tensile experiments on sheet materials using different specimen geometries are presented. The simulations complement an experimental study, using a split Hopkinson tensile bar set-up, coupled with a full-field deformation measurement device. The simulations give detailed information on the stress state. Due to the small size of the specimens and the way they are connected to the test device, non-axial stresses develop during loading. These stress components are commonly neglected, but, as will be shown, have a distinct influence on the specimen behaviour and the stress-strain curve extracted from the experiment. The validity of the basic assumptions of Hopkinson experiments is investigated: the uniaxiality of the stress state, the homogeneity of the strain and the negligibleness of the deformation of the transition zones. The influence of deviations from these assumptions on the material behaviour extracted from a Hopkinson experiment is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
