Teacher education in Germany has been significantly upgraded and developed over the past two decades, partly due to national programs such as the Quality Campaign Teacher Education. While specific, institutional and organizational features of teacher education continue to exist, tasks and demands have expanded considerably : in addition to studying and teaching, further tasks, such as research, promotion of young researchers, and transfer have been added. The article analyzes the organizational and institutional shape of teacher education and the question of how, in view of the governance-related restrictions, the central institutions are able to distinguish themselves and to cope with their tasks. In essence, given the fundamental cross-structure of teacher education, the article points to the need to successfully conduct interface-related negotiations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The discussion paper "Institutionalization of Teacher Education" was developed within the framework of the QLB-Camp and aims to establish institutional standards for teacher education in central scientific institutions. There are no institutional standards for teacher education in Germany, and the diversity of teacher education leads to problems and challenges. The Quality Initiative for Teacher Education has brought about positive changes, but there is uncertainty about how the created structures can be sustained and legally secured. The text describes various key points for the institutionalization of teacher education, including anchoring it in state higher education laws and promoting scholars in subject didactics and educational sciences. This study examines whether adult psychological distress and health risk behaviors mediate the relationship between childhood abuse and physical health in adulthood. A randomly selected population-based sample, with oversampling to include a one-third subgroup of former child protection cases, completed a structured interview. Questions pertained to childhood exposure to abuse, adult psychological distress, physical health, and health risk behaviors. Previous research using this sample had identified three abuse typologies: emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and polyvictimization (physical abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect). All three typologies were significantly associated with poorer self-reported physical health. Psychological distress and health risk behaviors partially mediated the relationship between nonabuse, sexual abuse, polyvictimization, and physical health, and fully mediated the relationship between emotional abuse and physical health. The results of this study indicate that health risk behaviors and symptoms of psychological distress could contribute to some of the long-lasting consequences of childhood abuse on adult physical health. The effect of ceramic veneering on the passivity of fit of cast metal and CAD/CAM-fabricated zirconia ceramic implant-supported three-unit cement-retained restorations was investigated, as well as the effect of misfit stress on the marginal integrity of ceramic veneers. Superstructures were fabricated using cast metal or by CAD/CAM milling of presintered or HIP zirconia ceramic (n=10). Before and after veneering, strain gages were used to measure in vitro the strain developed in all the restorations as a result of superstructure fixation. Fluorescent penetrant method was used to detect microcracks developed in ceramic veneers. Cast frameworks showed significantly higher strain values than CAD/CAM frameworks (p=0.000). Veneering significantly increased strain development in all CAD/CAM frameworks (p=0.000). Compared to zirconia ceramic restorations, significantly more microcracks were observed in cast restorations (p=0.000) both before and after superstructure fixation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Studies of specific groups such as military veterans have found that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is linked to adverse health outcomes including unhealthy weight. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between PTSD symptoms, experiences of childhood trauma and weight in a community sample., Methods: A stratified random probability survey was conducted in Denmark by the Danish National Centre for Social Research between 2008 and 2009 with 2,981 participants born in 1984, achieving a response rate of 67%. The participants were interviewed with a structured interview with questions pertaining PTSD symptomatology, exposure to childhood abuse, exposure to potentially traumatizing events, height, and weight. Underweight was defined by a body mass index (BMI) <18.5, overweight was defined by a BMI ≥25 and <30 and obesity was defined by a BMI ≥30., Results: PTSD symptomatology and childhood abuse were significantly associated with both underweight and overweight/obesity. Childhood emotional abuse was especially associated with underweight, whereas sexual abuse and overall abuse were particularly associated with overweight/obesity., Conclusion: These findings indicate that health care professionals may benefit from assessing PTSD and childhood abuse in the treatment of both overweight and underweight individuals.
