Trichostomum schlimii Müll.Hal., a neglected Colombian taxon, is transferred to the genus Pseudosymblepharis Broth. as Pseudosymblepharis schlimii (Müll.Hal.) comb. nov. The species, known only from the type locality in Santa Marta, Colombia, is newly reported for the moss floras of Bolivia, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guiana, Peru, and Venezuela. It is described, lectotypified, illustrated, and mapped. Diagnostic characters, and distinction from one closely related American species within the genus are discussed. Trichostomum mollissimum (Broth. ex E.B.Bartram) H.A.Crum and Pseudosymblepharis guatemalensis (E.B.Bartram) B.H.Allen are reduced to the synonymy of Pseudosymblepharis schlimii. The taxonomic status of two poorly known Andean species is reviewed. Their diagnostic characters are illustrated and discussed. Bartramia microbasis Müll. Hal. is proposed as a new synonym of Anacolia laevisphaera (Taylor) Flowers and Mielichhoferia modesta Müll. Hal. is reduced to synonymy of Pohlia wahlenbergii (F. Weber & D. Mohr) A. L. Andrews. The current status of the upland sandpiper (Bartramia longicauda) population in South Dakota is of primary concern to natural resource managers because the two main habitats this species needs, native rangelands and wetlands, are being converted to other land uses at a rapid rate. We synthesized over 330 references to generate a comprehensive review of the occurrence and ecology of the upland sandpiper population in South Dakota to determine obvious and significant information voids necessary to form a population management plan. In general, our literature synthesis indicated a nearly uniform lack of baseline data concerning upland sandpiper life history, distribution and population trends, and habitat requirements in South Dakota. Spatially and temporally, population and species accounts were sparse and inconsistent, but indicated extensive utilization of the northeast, east-central, and west-central regions of the state during the breeding and migration periods. The majority of life history data collected incidentally to spatially limited waterfowl nesting studies indicated that idle or lightly to moderately grazed native grasslands of medium height and density provided essential and preferred nesting habitat in eastern South Dakota. To maintain or enhance populations of upland sandpipers in South Dakota, large intact grasslands containing a mosaic of vegetation heights and wetland complexes should be preserved, and future research should focus on filling information voids relative to their life history and habitat needs. A morphometric study of the mosses Breutelia pendula (Sm.) Mitt. and B. elongata (Hook.f. & Wilson) Mitt. was conducted in order to investigate the species delimitation between these two species, and to ascertain the status of B. elongata in Australia, in particular Victoria. As a result, B. elongata is no longer considered to occur in continental Australia. Useful characters to distinguish between the newly circumscribed species include the size of the marginal teeth, whether or not the alar cells are inflated, the leaf width and the set of the leaves. Bartramia crassa Hook.f. & Wilson, which was previously considered a synonym of B. elongata, is synonymised with B. pendula. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Variation in foraging success in relation to spatial position in a group is little known in species that feed on mobile prey that can hide or flee upon disturbance by foragers. I examined the foraging success of individuals located either at the edge or at the centre of flocks of semipalmated sandpipers ( Calidris pusilla) feeding on a burrowing amphipod ( Corophium volutator) during migration stopover in the Bay of Fundy, Canada. The rates of pecking, prey capture and success were lower for individuals foraging at the edge than at the centre of flocks. Edge birds spent more time running and more time flying than centre birds. Edge birds moved away from the centre of the flock and made frequent short flights towards the centre. In contrast, centre birds rarely moved in a specific direction and flew mostly to relocate elsewhere with the whole flock. Sandpiper flocks foraged over a large area in a relatively short amount of time. In addition, amphipod density is high in this habitat. It thus appears unlikely that prey depletion or low food availability at the edges of groups could explain the spatial variation in foraging success. Low foraging success at the edges of flocks thus arose mainly because of time costs related to flock expansion and retraction. The rate of chick growth in high-latitude breeding shorebirds is rapid, but little is known about the effect of chick mass, growth, and brood movements on subsequent brood survival. To address these topics, we monitored chick growth patterns, daily brood movements, and survival of Western Sandpipers (Calidris mauri) on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska. We assessed the effect of chick age, mass, and hatch date on brood survival using Program MARK. We mapped brood locations daily, and compared brood movement patterns between successful and unsuccessful broods. Younger chicks survived at lower rates and moved shorter distances than older chicks. The overall probability of one or more chicks from a brood surviving to 15 days of age was 0.73 ± 0.05 SE. Brood survival declined seasonally, and broods with heavier chicks survived at higher rates than those with lighter chicks. On average, successful broods fledged 1.7 ± 0.1 SE chicks. Rate of chick growth was intermediate between those of high arctic and temperate-breeding shorebirds, and chick mass at hatching declined seasonally. Western Sandpiper brood survival was lowest when chicks were young, spatially clumped, and unable to maintain homeothermy, probably because young chicks were more vulnerable to both complete depredation events and extreme weather. Our data suggest that larger, older chicks are able to avoid predators by being spatially dispersed and highly mobile; thermal independence, achieved after approximately day five, enables chicks to better endure prolonged periods of cold and low food availability. The occurrence of eight biflavones belonging to the biluteolin series, the apigenin-luteolin series and the 2,3-dihydro-biluteolin series, and one monomeric flavone with an acid group, was investigated in six taxa of Bartramia with emphasis on sect. Ithyphyllae. The variation of biflavone profiles contributes to the characterization of the Bartramia species studied; substitution patterns signalize relevance also on the sectional level. The following four names of bryophytes are recommended for conservation: Hypnum uncinatulum against H. pseudocupressiforme, Tortula angustata against Syrrhopodon crispus, Selenia Nutt. against Selenia Hill and Haplocladium (Müll. Hal.) Müll. Hal. against Haplocladium Nägeli. The following three names are not recommended for conservation: Globulina boliviana against Trichostomum brunneum, Bartramia curvata against B. fontanoides and Jungermania ornithopoides with a conserved spelling ("ornithopodioides"). The Committee failed to reach a decision on the conservation of Gertrudia validinervis against Barbula uncinicoma.
