We present a study of kinematic asymmetries from the integral field spectroscopic surveys MAGPI and SAMI. By comparing the asymmetries in the ionized gas and stars, we aim to disentangle the physical processes that contribute to kinematic disturbances. We normalize deviations from circular motion by S 05, allowing us to study kinematic asymmetries in the stars and gas, regardless of kinematic temperature. We find a similar distribution of stellar asymmetries in galaxies where we do and do not detect ionized gas, suggesting that whatever is driving the stellar asymmetries does not always lead to gas removal. In both MAGPI and SAMI, we find an anticorrelation between stellar asymmetry and stellar mass, that is absent in the gas asymmetries. After stellar mass and mean-stellar-age matching distributions, we find that at all stellar masses, MAGPI galaxies display larger stellar asymmetry compared to SAMI galaxies. In both MAGPI and SAMI galaxies, we find that star-forming galaxies with old mean-stellar-ages typically have larger asymmetries in their gas compared to their stars, whereas galaxies with young mean-stellar-ages have larger asymmetries in their stars compared to their gas. The paper investigates the advance in the most intimate understanding of the construction methods of the Fabrica Solimene (1952–1955) in Vietri sul Mare, (Campania-Italy). The aim is to increase the level of geometric and informative detail of the model, digitally (re)built by means of an indirect method using a total station survey and subsequently by means of a direct method, i.e., by importing the elaborations derived from laser scanner acquisitions and photographic data sets into a BIM authoring vector software. For this purpose, using photogrammetry, new details are acquired, specifically addressed to the study of the static-mechanical behaviour of the perimeter wall studied in its mathematical configuration of the projecting bodies from bottom to top. This study is organised on the elaboration of new clean and decimated point cloud acquisitions to be converted into volumetric models for direct use in finite element calculation (FEM) codes aimed at structural analysis. Thanks to the proposed procedure, it possible to maintain the level of geometric detail appropriate to the resolution required for the analysis. The role of the environment on the formation of S0 galaxies is still not well understood, specifically in the outskirts of galaxy clusters. We study eight low-redshift clusters, analyzing galaxy members up to cluster-centric distances of ∼2.5 R200. We perform 2D photometric bulge–disk decomposition in the g, r, and i bands from which we identify 469 double-component galaxies. We separately analyze the colors of the bulges and disks and their dependence on the projected cluster-centric distance and local galaxy density. For our sample of cluster S0 galaxies, we find that bulges are redder than their surrounding disks, show a significant color–magnitude trend, and have colors that do not correlate with environment metrics. On the other hand, the disks associated with our cluster S0s become significantly bluer with increasing cluster-centric radius but show no evidence for a color–magnitude relation. The disk color–radius relation is mainly driven by galaxies in the cluster core at 0 ≤ R/R200 < 0.5. No significant difference is found for the disk colors of backsplash and infalling galaxies in the projected phase space (PPS). Beyond R200, the disk colors do not change with the local galaxy density, indicating that the colors of double-component galaxies are not affected by preprocessing. A significant color–density relation is observed for single-component disk-dominated galaxies beyond R200. We conclude that the formation of cluster S0 galaxies is primarily driven by cluster core processes acting on the disks, while evidence of preprocessing is found for single-component disk-dominated galaxies. We explore stellar population properties separately in the bulge and the disk of double-component cluster galaxies, to shed light on the formation of lenticular galaxies in dense environments. We study eight low-redshift clusters from the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral field Galaxy Survey, using two-dimensional photometric bulge–disk decomposition in the g, r, and i bands to characterize galaxies. For 192 double-component galaxies with M* > 1010M⊙, we estimate the color, age, and metallicity of the bulge and the disk. The analysis of the g − i colors reveals that bulges are redder than their surrounding disks, with a median offset of 0.12 ± 0.02 mag, consistent with previous results. To measure mass-weighted age and metallicity, we investigate three methods: (i) one based on galaxy stellar mass weights for the two components, (ii) one based on flux weights, and (iii) one based on radial separation. The three methods agree in finding 62% of galaxies having bulges that are 2–3 times more metal-rich than the disks. Of the remaining galaxies, 7% have bulges that are more metal-poor than the disks, while for 31%, the bulge and disk metallicities are not significantly different. We observe 23% of galaxies being characterized by bulges older and 34% by bulges younger with respect to the disks. The remaining 43% of galaxies have bulges and disks with statistically indistinguishable ages. Redder bulges tend to be more metal-rich than the disks, suggesting that the redder color in bulges is due to their enhanced metallicity relative to the disks instead of differences in stellar population age. The PERVIVAL project aims at developing an interactive system with the preliminary function of explaining a complex museum collection in a simple and immediate way and allowing the visitor to better understand the museum collection he is about to see. In particular, the interactive system aims at enhancing the understanding of the collections of funeral furnishings of Egyptians, which are characterized by a multiplicity of objects of rich symbolism and connected to each other through complex funeral rituals. The idea is to explain the religious creed of ancient Egyptians through the objects placed in the tomb, having in this way a double benefit: enlightening the rituals and placing the objects back in their primary function. In this way, the knowledge of the visitor is not only enlarged through the description of something that is described on papyruses or inscriptions (hence, not comprehensible) but also the proper function of every single object will be explained through the connection among them, as a function of amulets or goods necessary to travel through the World of the Dead. The connection between the different objects allows a much greater understanding of the exposed collection that would be perceived in this way not as a set of single isolated pieces, but as a harmonious set of complementary elements between they represent a specific historical-cultural context. Low-cost 3D sensors are nowadays widely diffused and many different solutions are available on the market. Some of these devices were developed for entertaining purposes, but are used also for acquisition and processing of different 3D data with the aim of documentation, research and study. Given the fact that these sensors were not developed for this purpose, it is necessary to evaluate their use in the capturing process. This paper shows a preliminary research comparing the Kinect 1 and 2 by Microsoft, the Structure Sensor by Occipital and the O&P Scan by Rodin4D in a medical scenario (i.e. human body scans). In particular, these sensors were compared to Minolta Vivid 9i, chosen as reference because of its higher accuracy. Different test objects were analysed: a calibrated flat plane, for the evaluation of the systematic distance error for each device, and three different parts of a mannequin, used as samples of human body parts. The results showed that the use of a certified flat plane is a good starting point in characterizing the sensors, but a complete analysis with objects similar to the ones of the real context of application is required. For example, the Kinect 2 presented the best results among the low-cost sensors on the flat plane, while the Structure Sensor was more reliable on the mannequin parts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Digital modelling archaeological and architectural monuments in their current state and in their presumed past aspect has been recognized not only as a way for explaining to the public the genesis of a historical site, but also as an effective tool for research. The search for historical sources, their proper analysis and interdisciplinary relationship between technological disciplines and the humanities are fundamental for obtaining reliable hypothetical reconstructions. This paper presents an experimental activity defined by the project Cultural Heritage Through Time - CHT2 funded in the framework of the Joint Programming Initiative on Cultural Heritage (JPI-CH) of the European Commission. Its goal is to develop time-varying 3D products, from landscape to architectural scale, deals with the implementation of the methodology on one of the case studies: the late Roman circus of Milan, built in the era when the city was the capital of the Western Roman Empire (286-402 A.D). The work presented here covers one of the cases in which the physical evidences have now been almost entirely disappeared. The diachronic reconstruction is based on a proper mix of quantitative data originated by 3D surveys at present time and historical sources like ancient maps, drawings, archaeological reports, archaeological restrictions decrees and old photographs. Such heterogeneous sources have been first georeferenced and then properly integrated according to the methodology defined in the framework of the CHT2 project, to hypothesize a reliable reconstruction of the area in different historical periods. Cultural Heritage documentation and preservation has become a fundamental concern in this historical period. 3D modelling offers a perfect aid to record ancient buildings and artefacts and can be used as a valid starting point for restoration, conservation and structural analysis, which can be performed by using Finite Element Methods (FEA). The models derived from reality-based techniques, made up of the exterior surfaces of the objects captured at high resolution, are-for this reason-made of millions of polygons. Such meshes are not directly usable in structural analysis packages and need to be properly pre-processed in order to be transformed in volumetric meshes suitable for FEA. In addition, dealing with ancient objects, a proper segmentation of 3D volumetric models is needed to analyse the behaviour of the structure with the most suitable level of detail for the different sections of the structure under analysis. Segmentation of 3D models is still an open issue, especially when dealing with ancient, complicated and geometrically complex objects that imply the presence of anomalies and gaps, due to environmental agents such as earthquakes, pollution, wind and rain, or human factors. The aims of this paper is to critically analyse some of the different methodologies and algorithms available to segment a 3D point cloud or a mesh, identifying difficulties and problems by showing examples on different structures. Although 3D models are useful to preserve the information about historical artefacts, the potential of these digital contents are not fully accomplished until they are not used to interactively communicate their significance to non-specialists. Starting from this consideration, a new way to provide museum visitors with more information was investigated. The research is aimed at valorising and making more accessible the Egyptian funeral objects exhibited in the Sforza Castle in Milan. The results of the research will be used for the renewal of the current exhibition, at the Archaeological Museum in Milan, by making it more attractive. A 3D virtual interactive scenario regarding the "path of the dead", an important ritual in ancient Egypt, was realized to augment the experience and the comprehension of the public through interactivity. Four important artefacts were considered for this scope: two ushabty, a wooden sarcophagus and a heart scarab. The scenario was realized by integrating low-cost Virtual Reality technologies, as the Oculus Rift DK2 and the Leap Motion controller, and implementing a specific software by using Unity. The 3D models were implemented by adding responsive points of interest in relation to important symbols or features of the artefact. This allows highlighting single parts of the artefact in order to better identify the hieroglyphs and provide their translation. Regional healthcare performance evaluation systems can help optimize healthcare resources on regional basis and improve the performance of healthcare services provided. The Tuscany region in Italy is a good example of an institution which meets these requirements. China has yet to build such a system based on international experience. In this paper, based on comparative studies between Tuscany and China, we propose that the managing institutions in China's experimental cities can select and commission a third-party agency to, respectively, evaluate the performance of their affiliated hospitals and community health service centers. Following some features of the Tuscan experience, the Chinese municipal healthcare performance evaluation system can be built by focusing on the selection of an appropriate performance evaluation agency, the design of an adequate performance evaluation mechanism and the formulation of a complete set of laws, rules and regulations. The expansion in vacuum of the plume generated by the UV ablation of a LiYF4 crystal was analysed as a function of several parameters: distance from the target along the plume axis, laser fluency and angular dislocation with respect to the plume axis. The study was carried out by the optical time of flight technique. Time-resolved signals of the optical emission of the neutral as well as ionised species in the plume were recorded and analysed for different experimental situations. The most probable velocity for each species was calculated and confirmed by the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution fits of the relative emission temporal profiles. Abstract: The realization of crystalline films of Nd 3+ :YF3 and Nd 3+ :LiYF4 on a monocrystalline LiYF4 substrate by pulsed laser deposition is reported. The films were obtained by laser ablation with 355 nm photons of a bulk LiYF4 crystal doped with Nd 3+ ions at 1.5% atomic concentration in the presence of different ablation/deposition parameters. The films optical characteristics, analyzed via laser induced polarized fluorescence spectroscopy upon IR excitation, are presented. Lifetime measurements of the fundamental Nd3+ ion transition in the film were also performed. All these results were compared with those obtained in the Nd 3+ :LiYF4 bulk crystal. The surface morphology of the depositions was analyzed via a scanning electron microscope. When the production of the deposition took place in high vacuum (1×10−4 Pa) and the substrate temperature was 750 °C, the grown film was Nd 3+ :YF3. A 1 Pa controlled atmosphere of He in the ablation chamber and a substrate temperature of 650 °C favoured the growth of a Nd 3+ :LiYF4 film. Abstract: The realization of a monocrystalline nanofilm of Nd3+-doped fluoride on LiYF4 substrates by pulsed laser deposition is reported. The film was obtained by laser ablation with 355 nm photons of a bulk LiYF4 crystal doped with Nd3+ ions at 1.5% atomic concentration. The measurements of the sample thickness obtained by an in situ interferometric technique, and the film optical characteristics analyzed via laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy upon UV and IR excitation, are presented. Lifetime measurements of the fundamental Nd3+ ion transition in the film were also performed. All the results were compared with those obtained in a Nd3+:LiYF4 bulk crystal. Abstract: We show how the interaction between Ga atoms and silica samples in a hot environment gives rise to permanent inclusions of Ga inside the silica matrix which, in turn, produce typical luminescence features. The Ga doped silica is analyzed via laser induced fluorescence, photoluminescence and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies. The results evidence the presence of modifications induced by the Ga inclusions inside the silica matrix and some preliminary hypothesis on their nature are advanced. Abstract: We performed temporal as well as frequency-resolved emission spectroscopy of the plasma plume generated in vacuum by 355nm pulsed laser ablation of a LiYF4:Tm3+ crystal (1% Tm3+ concentration) and a LiYF4:Nd3+ crystal (1.5% Nd3+ concentration). The plume emission spectrum is very rich in features and shows the elemental lines belonging to all the components of the host lattice, either neutral or ionized. The time-resolved analysis of some emission features is discussed and some stream velocities are derived. A possible model for the time evolution of the plume components is reported. The electronic detection technique was used to detect the onset of the plasma plume and to measure the ablation laser fluence threshold. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper reports on the excitation of the nP→52S1/2 series, when Ga vapour inside a quartz cell, with or without buffer gas, at a temperature larger than 900°C, is resonantly excited by laser pulses at 403.3 nm corresponding to the 42P1/2→52S1/2 excitation. The analyses of the fluorescence intensities as a function of several different experimental parameters demonstrate the nP levels to be populated via energy-pooling ionisation. To better address mechanical behavior, it is necessary to make use of modern tools through which it is possible to run predictions, simulate scenarios, and optimize decisions. sources integration. This will increase the capability of detecting material modifications that forerun damage and/or to forecast the stage in the future when very likely fatigue is initiating and propagating cracks. Early warning outcomes obtained by the synergetic implementation of NDE-based protocols for studying mechanical and fatigue and fracture behavior will enhance the preparedness toward economically sustainable future damage control scenarios. Specifically, these early warning outcomes will be developed in the form of retopologized models to be used coupled with FEA. This paper presents the first stage of calibration and the combination of a system of different sensors (photogrammetry, laser scanning and strain gages) for the creation of volumetric models suitable for the prediction of failure of FEA software. The test objects were two components of car suspension to which strain gauges were attached to measure its deformation under cyclic loading. The calibration of the methodology was carried out using models obtained from photogrammetry and experimental strain gauge measurements.

Astrocytes are ubiquitous in the brain and spinal cord and display a complex morphology important for the local interactions with neighboring cells, resulting in the modulation of circuit function. Thus, studies focusing on astrocyte physiology in the healthy and diseased brain generally present analyses of astrocytic structure. The labeling method used to visualize the astrocytic structure defines the morphological level to observe and may vary depending on the anatomical sub-regions. The method choice may significantly affect our understanding of their structural diversity. The main goal of this work was to identify a straightforward and efficient protocol for labeling and reconstructing a detailed astrocytic structure to apply and validate in different brain tissue preparations across laboratories. For that, we explored different tissue processing protocols before GFAP labeling to determine the most effective method for reconstructing astrocytic backbones in the mouse hippocampus. Our results show that the reconstruction of astrocytic structure in vibratome sections labeled by free-floating immunofluorescence protocol provides a more practical method to achieve a higher level of detail and arbor complexity in astrocyte backbone reconstruction. Free-floating immunofluorescence labeling is the most reliable method for obtaining better antibody penetration and more detailed astrocyte structure. Finally, we also show that introducing an antigen retrieval step appears useful for visualizing more complete structural details.

Background: Nursing homes were often the focus of COVID-19 outbreaks. Many factors are known to influence the ability of a nursing home to prevent and contain a COVID-19 outbreak. The role of an organisation's quality management prior to the pandemic is not yet clear. In the Italian region of Tuscany nursing home performance indicators have been regularly collected since before the pandemic, providing the opportunity to better understand this relationship., Objectives: To test if there is a difference in the results achieved by nursing homes in Tuscany on 13 quality management indicators, when grouped by severity of COVID-19 outbreaks; and to better understand how these indicators may be related to the ability to control COVID-19 outbreaks, from the perspective of nursing homes., Methods: We used a mixed methods sequential explanatory design. Based on regional and national databases, 159 nursing homes in Tuscany were divided into four groups by outbreak severity. We tested the significance of the differences between the groups with respect to 13 quality management indicators. The potential relation of these indicators to COVID-19 outbreaks was discussed with 29 managers and other nursing homes' staff through four group interviews., Results: The quantitative analysis showed significant differences between the groups of nursing homes for 3 of the 13 indicators. From the perspective of nursing homes, the indicators might not be good at capturing important aspects of the ability to control COVID-19 outbreaks. We study the imprint of light scalar fields on gravitational waves from extreme mass-ratio inspirals-binary systems with a very large mass asymmetry. We first show that, to leading order in the mass ratio, any effects of the scalar on the waveform are captured fully by two parameters: the mass of the scalar and the scalar charge of the secondary compact object. We then use this theory-agnostic framework to show that the future observations by LISA will be able to simultaneously measure both of these parameters with enough accuracy to detect ultralight scalars.

Astrocytes are integral components of brain circuits, where they sense, process, and respond to surrounding activity, maintaining homeostasis and regulating synaptic transmission, the sum of which results in behavior modulation. These interactions are possible due to their complex morphology, composed of a tree-like structure of processes to cover defined territories ramifying in a mesh-like system of fine leaflets unresolved by conventional optic microscopy. While recent reports devoted more attention to leaflets and their dynamic interactions with synapses, our knowledge about the tree-like "backbone" structure in physiological conditions is incomplete. Recent transcriptomic studies described astrocyte molecular diversity, suggesting structural heterogeneity in regions such as the hippocampus, which is crucial for cognitive and emotional behaviors. In this study, we carried out the structural analysis of astrocytes across the hippocampal subfields of Cornu Ammonis area 1 (CA1) and dentate gyrus in the dorsoventral axis. We found that astrocytes display heterogeneity across the hippocampal subfields, which is conserved along the dorsoventral axis. We further found that astrocytes appear to contribute in an exocytosis-dependent manner to a signaling loop that maintains the backbone structure. These findings reveal astrocyte heterogeneity in the hippocampus, which appears to follow layer-specific cues and depend on the neuro-glial environment., (© 2023 The Authors. Background: Determining the different features and potential impacts of community initiatives aimed at health-related outcomes poses challenges for both researchers and policy makers., Purpose: This article explores the nature of heterogeneous "community engagement initiatives" (CEIs) considering both their social and organizational features in order to understand the managerial and policy implications to maximize their potential local health and social care-related impacts., Methodology: A threefold qualitative analysis was conducted: (a) Three frameworks were developed to classify and analyze different CEIs features, building upon the current literature debate; (b) primary data were collected from Italian CEIs; and (c) a comparative cross-case analysis of a total of 79 CEIs in Italy and the United Kingdom was implemented., Findings: The results show two types of strategic policy and management implications: (a) CEI portfolios are very broad and differentiated; (b) different social networks have diversified social constructs, internal cultures, and organizational features; and (c) there is a consequent need to contextualize relational and steering approaches in order to maximize their potential community added value., Conclusion: CEIs are fundamental pillars of contemporary welfare systems because of both the changing demography and epidemiology and the disruptive impact of platform economy models. This challenging scenario and the related CEIs involve a complex social mechanism, which requires a new awareness and strengthened competences for public administrations' steering., Practice Implications: It is crucial for policy makers and managers to become familiar with all the different CEIs available in order to choose which solution to implement, depending on their potential impacts related to local public health and social care priorities. Cultural heritage's structural changes and damages can influence the mechanical behaviour of artefacts and buildings. The use of finite element methods (FEM) for mechanical analysis is largely used in modelling stress behaviour. The workflow involves the use of CAD 3D models and the use of non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) surfaces. For cultural heritage objects, altered by the time elapsed since their creation, the representation created with the CAD model may introduce an extreme level of approximation, leading to wrong simulation results. The focus of this work is to present an alternative method intending to generate the most accurate 3D representation of a real artefact from highly accurate 3D reality-based models, simplifying the original models to make them suitable for finite element analysis (FEA) software. The approach proposed, and tested on three different case studies, was based on the intelligent use of retopology procedures to create a simplified model to be converted to a mathematical one made by NURBS surfaces, which is also suitable for being processed by volumetric meshes typically embedded in standard FEM packages. This allowed us to obtain FEA results that were closer to the actual mechanical behaviour of the analysed heritage asset.

Introduction: While selected clinical and laboratory findings are taken into account to find the best therapeutic strategies for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), it is unknown whether the circadian rhythm of respiratory symptoms, a distinctive feature of COPD, affects the prescription pattern of pharmacological therapy. The main aim of this study was to verify whether the circadian rhythm of symptoms correlates with bronchodilating therapy prescribed to COPD patients as per clinical practice. A secondary objective was to assess the relationship between Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) stage and circadian rhythm of symptoms and health status., Methods: Five hundred sixty-six COPD patients were enrolled in the Italian multicenter STORICO study. Patients underwent a multidimensional assessment, and correlates of prescribed therapy were assessed through a multivariate multilevel model., Results: As expected, patients in GOLD D stage were more likely to receive triple inhaled therapy than GOLD A-C patients, but the circadian rhythm of symptoms, assessed by the nighttime, morning, and daytime symptoms of the COPD questionnaire, was unrelated to the prescription pattern. The multivariate model showed that emphysematous (EM) patients had a 50% increased risk compared with patients affected by chronic bronchitis (CB) of being prescribed long-acting β2-agonists (LABA)/long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) fixed-dose combination (FDC) instead of triple therapy [relative risk (RR) EM versus CB 1.50, 95% CI 1.11, 2.03]. Symptoms, mainly in the early morning and daytime, were highly prevalent, even in GOLD B stage (76%)., Conclusion: Even if we cannot infer about causality of the symptoms-therapy relationship, based on the structured recording of circadian symptoms clearly shows that symptoms are poorly controlled as the circadian rhythm of symptoms does not correlate with the prescription pattern, and many patients are symptomatic both at daytime and by nighttime. Primordial black holes possibly formed in the early Universe could provide a significant fraction of the dark matter and would be unique probes of inflation. A smoking gun for their discovery would be the detection of a subsolar mass compact object. We argue that extreme mass-ratio inspirals will be ideal to search for subsolar-mass black holes not only with LISA but also with third-generation ground-based detectors such as Cosmic Explorer and the Einstein Telescope. These sources can provide unparalleled measurements of the mass of the secondary object at a subpercent level for primordial black holes as light as O(0.01)  M&#95;{⊙} up to luminosity distances around hundred megaparsec and few gigaparsec for LISA and Einstein Telescope, respectively, in a complementary frequency range. This would allow claiming, with very high statistical confidence, the detection of a subsolar-mass black hole, which would also provide a novel (and currently undetectable) family of sources for third-generation detectors.

Purpose: Economic resource constrains in public spending budget in a country, such as Italy, with an ageing population with high incidence of chronic diseases calls for better strategies to improve measuring quality and efficiency in nursing homes (NHs). This paper analyses the efficiency of 40 NHs based in Tuscany considering not only structural characteristics but also quality of care, including residents, relatives and staff satisfaction., Methodology: We run a classic data envelopment analysis (DEA) on data gathered by the NHs' regional performance evaluation system. We include as inputs the number of total work hours as labour and the daily cost for services as economic resources. As outputs we include measures for quality of care (number of falls, urinary infections and antidepressants), satisfaction (residents, relatives and professionals) and quality of life (days of recreational activities). We run a multivariate regression to analyse the determinants of previously obtained efficiency scores considering factors such as: institutional (ownership), managerial (training) and clinical (patient's severity)., Findings: Results find 35% efficient NHs. Moreover, management and the managerial factor (staff trained in end-of-life support) are predictors of the efficiency score.Originality: Our study uses satisfaction (residents, relatives and professionals) measures as proxy for quality output in the DEA model and measures related to staff management (eg training) as predictors of the efficiency scores.

Aims: The Italian general practitioners (GPs) are not directly employed by the National Health Service but work as independent contractors. Their activity and their salary are managed at the national, regional, and local level. This paper analyses the Tuscany Region case study to investigate if primary care's target-setting styles are associated with different GP perceptions, by comparing nine different local agreements to a survey on 102 GPs. We propose a classification of the different target-setting (ideal typical) styles, ranging from "financial governance" (FG), mainly based on financial targets, to "clinical governance" (CG), that mainly relies on clinical and quality targets., Findings: Results show that GPs are more likely to have a more favourable attitude toward primary care managerial tools if they have certain characteristics, ie, quality measures. This suggest that target setting system might promote both the GPs' compliance to the targets set by the agreement and the involvement of the GPs in the LHA's governance processes too., Conclusions: The managerial tools could pave the way to overcome the classical "trade unionist" relationship between the regional and local authority and the GPs, working as a "trait d'union" between the two players., (© 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Healthcare systems have followed several strategies aimed at integrating primary care services and professionals. Medical homes in the USA and Canada, and primary care centres across Europe have collocated general practitioners and other health and social professionals in the same building in order to boost coordination among services and the continuity of care for patients. However, in the literature, the impact of co-location on primary care has led to controversial results. This article analyses the possible benefits of the co-location of services in primary care focusing on the Italian model of primary care centres (Case della Salute) in terms of general practitioners' perception. We used the results of a web survey of general practitioners in Tuscany to compare the experiences and satisfaction of those general practitioners involved and not involved in a primary care centre, performed a MONAVA and ANOVA analysis. Our case study highlights the positive impact of co-location on the integration of professionals, especially with nurses and social workers, and on organizational integration, in terms of frequency of meeting to discuss about quality of care. Conversely, no significant differences were found in terms of either clinical or system integration. Furthermore, the collaboration with specialists is still weak. Considering the general practitioners' perspective in terms of experience and satisfaction towards primary care, co-location strategies is a necessary step in order to facilitate the collaboration among professionals and to prevent unintended consequences in terms of an even possible isolation of primary care as an involuntary 'disintegration of the integration'.
