Targeted therapy against CML commenced with the development of small-molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) exerting their effect against the oncogenic breakpoint cluster region (BCR)-ABL fusion protein. Imatinib emerged as the first successful example of a TKI used for the treatment of chronic-phase CML patients and resulted in significant improvements in response rate and overall survival compared with previous treatments. However, a significant portion of patients failed to respond to the therapy and developed resistance against imatinib. Second-generation TKIs nilotinib and dasatinib were to have higher efficiency in clinical trials in imatinib- resistant or intolerant CML patients compared with imatinib. Identification of novel strategies such as dose escalation, drug combination therapy, and use of novel BCR-ABL inhibitors may eventually overcome resistance against BCR-ABL TKIs. This article reviews the history of CML, including the treatment strategies used prediscovery of TKIs and the preclinical and clinical data obtained after the use of imatinib, and the second-generation TKIs developed for the treatment of CML.Keywords: drug resistance, tyrosine kinase inhibitors, chronic myeloid leukemia, imatinib, BCR/ABL

Abstract Objective The primary objective of this study was to identify the risk of metastasis to lymph nodes above the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) in endometrioid-type endometrial cancer (EC) and the factors that influence metastasis. Methods The study included patients who had been operated on for endometrioid-type EC in three gynecological oncology centers between 2007 and 2023. The supramesenteric lymph node (SM-LN) is the region between the left renal vein and the IMA, whereas the inframesenteric lymph node (IM-LN) is the region between the IMA and the aortic bifurcation, as determined by the level of the IMA. Results The study sample comprised 412 patients. The median number of lymph nodes excised per patient was 58. The median count was 37 for pelvic lymph nodes, 21 for para-aortic lymph nodes, 8 for IM-LN, and 13 for SM-LN. In the univariate analysis, the factors that were found to be statistically significant in determining SM-LN metastasis included tumor size, depth of myometrial invasion, uterine serosal invasion, lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI), cervical invasion, peritoneal cytology, adnexal metastasis, omental metastasis, non-nodal extrauterine metastasis, pelvic lymph node metastasis, and IM-LN metastasis. In the multivariate analysis, SM-LN metastasis was independently associated with tumor size, LVSI, pelvic lymph node metastasis, and IM-LN metastasis. Conclusion In conclusion, in cases of intermediate-high risk EC, it is important to know that the disease spreads to SM-LN in 7.3% of patients. The efficacy of postoperative adjuvant treatment may be inadequate due to a lack of information regarding the SM-LN region.

Background and Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between tramadol use and cardio electrophysiological imbalance (iCEB/iCEBc) in general surgery patients with complaints of acute postoperative pain (APP). Materials and Methods: In this prospective cross-sectional study, a total of 218 consecutive patients over the age of 18, who underwent surgical procedures in our clinic (postoperative), were included. For analgesic effect, tramadol was administered with an initial total max dose not exceeding 2 mg/kg. A single max dose (100 mg) was given intravenously, infused in 100 cc of saline over 60 min. In all patients requiring analgesia, electrocardiography (ECG) was performed in the supine position with 12 leads at 25 mm/s and 10 mm/mV, immediately before and after tramadol administration. iCEB was calculated as QT/QRS and iCEBc as QTc/QRS. Results: A total of 218 patients were included in this study, with 98 of them being male (45%) and the average age being 46.20 ± 17.19 years. The average tramadol dose for analgesic effect was 98.21 ± 7.62 mg. The QT interval (339.17 ± 36.27 vs. 349.88 ± 30.86, p = 0.001), QTc interval (407.07 ± 26.36 vs. 419.64 ± 31.78, p < 0.001), QRS duration (80.82 ± 11.39 vs. 78.57 ± 9.80, p = 0.018), iCEB (4.26 ± 0.69 vs. 4.52 ± 0.70, p < 0.001), and iCEBc (5.14 ± 0.86 vs. 5.42 ± 0.79, p = 0.001) values significantly increased compared to the baseline immediately after drug administration. Furthermore, the drug dose was identified as an independent predictor that increased iCEBc (β = 0.201, p = 0.003). Conclusions: Even at single and therapeutic doses, tramadol increases iCEB and iCEBc. Additionally, the drug dose is an independent predictor of increased iCEBc.

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are a rapidly growing technology which can lower greenhouse-gas emissions in the transport and energy sectors. The EV batteries can discharge the stored energy back to grid, also known as Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) which can support the integration of variable distributed renewable generation. Previous research identified financial barriers to the implementation of V2G, however, recent advancements in battery technology present new opportunities to make V2G technology viable. Using the current and predicted EV technology trends, this paper evaluates the annual operation and benefits of EVs and V2G in a microgrid environment and demonstrates different modes of operation. Guided by the gaps identified in the literature, one of the main contributions of this research is to uncover the impact of EV charging scenarios on the V2G operations. Furthermore, the research reveals the interactions between V2G and variable renewable generation coupled with utility scale battery over yearlong simulations to assess seasonal characteristics of V2G operations, which was mostly unexplored to date. Simulation results indicate that the operation of V2G in an optimised microgrid environment improves the economic operation of the system and reduces the levelized cost of electricity by up to 5.7%. Additionally, V2G provides more benefit to grids with higher solar generation proportion The results suggest that the latest advancements in EV technology have improved the economic viability of V2G as well as its potential to improve grid efficiency through providing additional storage capacity and peak demand management.

Electronic decision-support tools are becoming an essential component of government strategies to tackle non-native species invasions. This study describes the development and application of a multilingual electronic decision-support tool for screening terrestrial animals under current and future climate conditions: the Terrestrial Animal Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (TAS-ISK). As an adaptation of the widely employed Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK), the TAS-ISK question template inherits from the original Weed Risk Assessment (WRA) and related WRA-type toolkits and complies with the ‘minimum requirements’ for use with the recent European Regulation on invasive alien species of concern. The TAS-ISK consists of 49 basic questions on the species’ biogeographical/historical traits and its biological/ecological interactions, and of 6 additional questions to predict how climate change is likely to influence the risks of introduction, establishment, dispersal and impact of the screened species. Following a description of the main features of this decision-support tool as a turnkey software application and of its graphical user interface with support for 32 languages, sample screenings are provided in different risk assessment areas for one representative species of each of the main taxonomic groups of terrestrial animals supported by the toolkit: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, annelids, insects, molluscs, nematodes, and platyhelminths. The highest-scoring species were the red earthworm Lumbricus rubellus for the Aegean region of Turkey and the New Zealand flatworm Arthurdendyus triangulatus for Croatia. It is anticipated that adoption of this toolkit will mirror that of the worldwide employed AS-ISK, hence allowing to share information and inform decisions for the prevention of entry and/or dispersal of (high-risk) non-native terrestrial animal species – a crucial step to implement early-stage control and eradication measures as part of rapid-response strategies to counteract biological invasions.

There are many types of neoplasms in or around the foramen of Luschka (FL), and definitive diagnosis in some cases requires knowledge of imaging findings. The uncommon and challenging neoplasms with FL involvement considered in this study are exophytic brainstem glioma, primary glioblastoma of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA), primary anaplastic ependymoma of the CPA, choroid plexus papilloma of the FL, solitary FL choroid plexus metastasis, extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma of the jugular foramen, paraganglioma of the jugular foramen, exostosis of the jugular foramen, psammomatous meningioma in the lateral cerebellar medullary cistern, epidermoid tumor of the fourth ventricle, and a hypoglossal schwannoma. These neoplasms may have overlapping clinical and imaging features, but some have relatively distinct imaging features. Knowledge of the key clinical and magnetic resonance imaging features of these unusual lesions with FL involvement is important for radiologists to improve diagnostic ability and to assist the referring physician in the appropriate management of the patient.

Material selection is a crucial aspect in the design of reliable, efficient and long-lasting wave energy converters (WECs). However, to date, the development of tailored methodologies applied to the material selection of WECs remains vastly unexplored. In this paper, a material selection framework for the case of lift-based WECs is developed. The application of the methodology is demonstrated with the hydrofoils of the device. Offshore steel, high-strength offshore steel, aluminium alloys, and carbon- and glass-fibre-reinforced composites are considered and evaluated subject to relevant criteria for wave energy converters, namely structural reliability, hydrodynamic efficiency, offshore maintainability, total manufacturing cost and environmental impact. Candidate materials are assessed via fuzzy TOPSIS for three scenarios of the life cycle of the WEC: conceptual, commercial and future projection stages. Results show that the choice of optimal materials could change from present to future and that multi-criteria decision-making tools aided by a fuzzy approach are useful design tools for novel WECs when field data are scarce. Hence, methodologies such as the ones presented in this work can help in reducing the probability of mechanical failures of emerging WEC technology.

The present study aims to develop a risk-based approach to finding optimal solutions for life extension management for offshore wind farms based on Markowitz’s modern portfolio theory, adapted from finance. The developed risk-based approach assumes that the offshore wind turbines (OWT) can be considered as cash-producing tangible assets providing a positive return from the initial investment (capital) with a given risk attaining the targeted (expected) return. In this regard, the present study performs a techno-economic life extension analysis within the scope of the multi-objective optimisation problem. The first objective is to maximise the return from the overall wind assets and the second objective is to minimise the risk associated with obtaining the return. In formulating the multi-dimensional optimisation problem, the life extension assessment considers the results of a detailed structural integrity analysis, a free-cash-flow analysis, the probability of project failure, and local and global economic constraints. Further, the risk is identified as the variance from the expected mean of return on investment. The risk–return diagram is utilised to classify the OWTs of different classes using an unsupervised machine learning algorithm. The optimal portfolios for the various required rates of return are recommended for different stages of life extension.

Lake Van is the largest saline soda lake in the world and one of the world’s few endorheic lakes of greater than 3,000 km2 surface area. Despite its huge size, no fish species have so far been known to permanently occur in this lake due to its extreme environmental conditions. Here, we report the discovery of a fish population that permanently inhabits some of the unique microbialites of the lake, at a maximum depth of 13 m and about 500 m offshore. We tested whether this is an undescribed species or a new occurrence of a known species. A molecular and morphological examination showed that the newly discovered fish represents an isolated population of Oxynoemacheilus ercisianus, the only nemacheilid loach native to the freshwater tributaries of the Lake Van endorheic basin. Our further hypotheses on the prediction that (a) stream fishes would have a more anterior placement of fins than lake fishes were supported; but, that (b) stream fishes would be more slender bodied than their lake conspecifics was not supported. The lake dwelling population also shows very small sequence divergence (0.5% K2P distance) to its stream dwelling conspecific in the mtDNA-COI barcode region. The notable morphological difference with minute molecular divergence implies that the newly discovered population might have lost its link to freshwater during desiccation and transgressional phases of the Lake Van, and has adapted to a life on the microbialites.

Australia’s electricity networks are experiencing low demand during the day due to excessive residential solar export and high demand during the evening on days of extreme temperature due to high air conditioning use. Pre-cooling and solar pre-cooling are demand-side management strategies with the potential to address both these issues. However, there remains a lack of comprehensive studies into the potential of pre-cooling and solar pre-cooling due to a lack of data. In Australia, however, extensive datasets of household energy measurements, including consumption and generation from rooftop solar, obtained through retailer-owned smart meters and household-owned third-party monitoring devices, are now becoming available. However, models presented in the literature which could be used to simulate the cooling energy in residential homes are temperature-based, requiring indoor temperature as an input. Temperature-based models are, therefore, precluded from being able to use these newly available and extensive energy-based datasets, and there is a need for the development of new energy-based simulation tools. To address this gap, a novel data-driven model to estimate the cooling energy in residential homes is proposed. The model is temperature-independent, requiring only energy-based datasets for input. The proposed model was derived by an analysis comparing the internal free-running and air conditioned temperature data and the air conditioning data for template residential homes generated by AccuRate, a building energy simulation tool. The model is comprised of four linear equations, where their respective slope intercepts represent a thermal efficiency metric of a thermal zone in the template residential home. The model can be used to estimate the difference between the internal free-running, and air conditioned temperature, which is equivalent to the cooling energy in the thermal zone. Error testing of the model compared the difference between the estimated and AccuRate air conditioned temperature and gave average CV-RMSE and MAE values of 22% and 0.3 °C, respectively. The significance of the model is that the slope intercepts for a template home can be applied to an actual residential home with equivalent thermal efficiency, and a pre-cooling or solar pre-cooling analysis is undertaken using the model in combination with the home’s energy-based dataset. The model is, therefore, able to utilise the newly available extensive energy-based datasets for comprehensive studies on pre-cooling and solar pre-cooling of residential homes.

Aspergillus niger is an important filamentous fungus in industrial biotechnology for the production of citric acid and enzymes. In the late 1980s, the A. niger N400/NRRL3 strain was selected for both fundamental and applied studies in relation to several processes including gluconic acid and protein production. To facilitate handling of A. niger, the N400 wild-type strain was UV mutagenized in two consecutive rounds to generate N401 and N402. N402 was used as a reference laboratory strain and exhibits the phenotypes with reduced conidiophore stalk length and reduced radial growth. The conidiophore stalk length and radial growth of A. niger strain N400 were determined and compared to N401 and N402. The length of N400 conidiophore stalks (2.52 ± 0.40 mm) was reduced in N401 and N402 to 0.66 ± 0.14 mm and 0.34 ± 0.06 mm, respectively. Whereas N400 reached a colony diameter of 6.7 ± 0.2 cm after 7 days, N401 and N402 displayed reduced radial growth phenotype (4.3 ± 0.1 and 4.1 ± 0.1, respectively). To identify the mutations (dubbed cspA and cspB) responsible for the phenotypes of N401 and N402, the genomes were sequenced and compared to the N400 genome sequence. A parasexual cross was performed between N400 and N402 derivatives to isolate segregants which allowed cosegregation analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms and insertions and deletions among the segregants. The shorter conidiophore stalk and reduced radial growth in N401 (cspA) was found to be caused by a 9-kb deletion on chromosome III and was further narrowed down to a truncation of NRRL3_03857 which encodes a kinesin-like protein homologous to the A. nidulans UncA protein. The mutation responsible for the further shortening of conidiophore stalks in N402 (cspB) was found to be caused by a missense mutation on chromosome V in a hitherto unstudied C2H2 transcription factor encoded by the gene NRRL3_06646. The importance of these two genes in relation to conidiophore stalk length and radial growth was confirmed by single and double gene deletion studies. The mutations in the laboratory strain N402 should be taken into consideration when studying phenotypes in the N402 background.

Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) has become by far the most frequently farmed freshwater fish species in Turkey, whereas very little is known about its establishment and invasiveness potential. We explored this potential through a combination of Maxent habitat suitability model and the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK) on the river basin scale by generating an overall risk score (ORS). The outcome of this approach was also incorporated with the spatial analysis of native salmonid species by generating a relative vulnerability score (RVS) to prioritize susceptibility of native species (or populations) and to propose risk hotspots by identifying their potential geographic overlap and interaction with O. mykiss. Results suggest that the northern basins (Eastern Black Sea, Western Black Sea and Marmara basins) are the most suitable basins for O. mykiss. According to the Basic Risk Assessment (BRA) threshold scores, O. mykiss is classified as “high risk” for 3 (12.0%) of the 25 river basins screened (Western Black Sea, Eastern Black Sea and Maritza-Ergene), and as “medium risk” for the remaining basins. The climate change assessment (CCA) scores negatively contributed the overall invasiveness potential of O. mykiss in 22 (88.0%) of the river basins and resulted in zero contribution for the remaining three, namely Aras-Kura, Çoruh river and Eastern Black Sea. The ORS score of river basins was lowest for Orontes and highest for Western Black Sea, whereas it was lowest for Konya-closed basin and highest for Eastern Black Sea, when CCA was associated. The micro-basins occupied by Salmo rizeensis had the highest mean habitat suitability with O. mykiss. Among the all species, S. abanticus had the highest RVS, followed by S. munzuricus and S. euphrataeus. The overall outcome of the present study also suggests that the establishment and invasiveness potential of O. mykiss may decrease under future (climate warmer) in Turkey, except for the northeast region. This study can provide environmental managers and policy makers an insight into using multiple tools for decision-making. The proposed RVS can also be considered as a complementary tool to improve IUCN red list assessment protocols of species.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an arrhythmia associated with an increased stroke risk and mortality rate. Current treatment options leave unmet needs in AF therapy. Recently, doxapram has been introduced as a possible new option for AF treatment in a porcine animal model. To better understand its pharmacokinetics, three German Landrace pigs were treated with intravenous doxapram (1 mg/kg). Plasma and brain tissue samples were collected. For the analysis of these samples, an ultra performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) assay for the simultaneous measurement of doxapram and its active metabolite 2-ketodoxapram was developed and validated. The assay had a lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) of 10 pg/mL for plasma and 1 pg/sample for brain tissue. In pigs, doxapram pharmacokinetics were biphasic with a terminal elimination half-life (t1/2) of 1.38 ± 0.22 h and a maximal plasma concentration (cmax) of 1780 ± 275 ng/mL. Its active metabolite 2-ketodoxapram had a t1/2 of 2.42 ± 0.04 h and cmax of 32.3 ± 5.5 h after administration of doxapram. Protein binding was 95.5 ± 0.9% for doxapram and 98.4 ± 0.3% for 2-ketodoxapram with a brain-to-plasma ratio of 0.58 ± 0.24 for doxapram and 0.12 ± 0.02 for 2-ketodoxapram. In conclusion, the developed assay was successfully applied to the creation of pharmacokinetic data for doxapram, possibly improving the safety of its usage.

Objective: Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) has been used as a marker of gene expression and a single cell marker in living organisms in cell biology studies. The important areas that GFP is used are expression levels of different genes in different organisms by inserting GFP in these genes and as a marker in living cells. In this study, we tried to optimize transfection of mesenchymal stem cells, (MSCs) used for regeneration of damaged tissues in animals, by GFP containing plasmid vector by which MSCs can be followed in vivo. Material and Methods: To this aim, phM-GFP plasmid vector carrying GFP gene and effectene transfection reagent were used. Result: The data revealed that twice transfection of MSCs resulted in higher expression of GFP for longer times as compared to once transfected MSCs. On the other hand, leaving the chemical transfection agents in the medium induced apoptosis after a while. Conclusion: As a conclusion we suggest the transfection of MSCs twice with 48 hours interval and removal of transfection agents after 8 hours which removed toxic and apoptotic effects of the chemicals. Although positron emission tomography–computed tomography (PET/CT) is widely used for staging, there are limited data available to describe exactly the role of PET/CT metabolic and quantitative parameters for the prediction of disease outcome. A total of 145 patients diagnosed with histology-proven lung carcinoma in the advanced stage were included. According to the exclusion criteria remaining 76 patients (41 of them were adenocarcinoma EGFR wild-type, 35 were squamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)) were analyzed. Maximum standardized uptake value (SUV(max)) of a primary lesion was only statistically significant parameter with progression-free survival (PFS) in regression analyses in the whole study population as well as for overall survival (OS). According to the tumor histology, squamous cell carcinoma group did not have any significant PET CT parameters for PFS and OS, but adenocarcinoma group had significant PET CT parameters which were primary lesion of SUV max, SUV mean, total lesion glycolysis (TLG), mediastinal TLG and whole body TLG. In adenocarcinoma group, patients with lower than median TLG values had significantly increased overall survival than patients having higher median whole body TLG values (median OS was 11 vs 6.5 months, P = 0.031, HR 2.1), also they had more PFS without statistical significance (median PFS 6.5 vs 4 months, P = 0.3 HR 1.2). The present study showed that PET/CT metabolic parameters give some prognostic information other than staging of NSCLC, but this information was only significant in EGFR-wild type adenocarcinoma. For squamous cell carcinoma, we need to find any driver targets.

Objective: Chordoma is a rare malignant bone tumor with a poor outcome. Although radiotherapy and gamma knife surgery have been used for treatment, providing a cure for the tumor is not easy, because of the frequent recurrences. Molecular targeted therapy against tyrosine kinases has been effective in the treatment of malignancies such as breast and lung cancers and brain tumors. We aimed to analyse the histopathological features of chordomas and the immunoexpression profiles of the three receptor tyrosine kinases of EGFR, c-Met and c-Erb-B2 in chordomas. We have correlated these results with recurrence and overall survival status of the patients. Material and Method: We studied 49 chordoma patients in order to evaluate the histopathological features and immunohistochemical stainings by EGFR, c-Met and c-ErbB2 antibodies. Of the 49 patients, follow up data was available for 40 patients. Clinical data of the patients were correlated with histopathological features and survival analysis was performed. Results: The immunostaining rate by EGFR and c-Met was 73.5% and 12.2% respectively. None of the cases showed immunoreactivity by c-ErbB2 (0%). Of the 40 cases, 17 cases showed recurrences. EGFR expression was detected in 14 recurrent (14/17) and 17 non-recurrent cases (17/23). Four of the 17 recurrent cases (4/17) were positive by c-Met, while none of the non-recurrent cases (0/23) were positive by this antibody. Remote cerebellar hemorrhage after cranial and spinal surgeries is a well-documented entity, so far concomitant supra- and infra-tentorial hemorrhage after spine surgery has rarely been reported in the literature. A 57-year-old woman presented with intractable low back pain and severely impaired mobility. One year ago, she underwent lumbar laminectomy and fusion with posterior spinal instrumentation between L2 and S1. She developed adjacent segment disease at the upper level of the instrumented vertebra. She had a revision surgery and underwent posterior laminectomy and fusion with bilateral transpedicular instrumentation between T10 and S1. She had severe headache, somnolence, and left hemiparesia 48 h after the surgery. Her emergent head computed tomography depicted intra-parenchymal hemorrhage in the right parietal lobe accompanying with subarachnoid hemorrhage, bilateral symmetrical cerebellar hemorrhages and pneumocephalus. She was treated nonsurgically and she got better despite some residual deficits. Symptoms including constant headache, nausea, vomiting, impaired consciousness, new onset seizure, and focal neurological deficit after spine surgeries should raise suspicion for intracranial intra-parenchymal hemorrhage.

Cervical myelopathy (CM) is mostly a degenerative process ending in myelopathic and/or radiculopathic syndromes. On T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), CM appears as a hyperintense area near the spondylotic spine. This high intensity signal depends on the impact of outer forces and their duration. It also determines the prognosis of the surgical candidate. A 40-year-old male patient admitted to our clinic with right upper extremity weakness and hypoesthesia that had started 2 months earlier. On neurological examination there was 2/5 motor weakness of right biceps brachii, and hypoesthesia over right C6 dermatome. Right upper extremity deep tendon reflexes were hypoactive, but lower ones were hyperactive. After clinical and radiological work-up, preliminary diagnosis was directed to a spinal intramedullary tumor. Total resection of the herniated cervical disc fragment and the mass lesion was managed. Pathology of the mass lesion was compatible with subacute infarct tissue and inflammatory response. Final diagnosis was CM under effect of cervical disc herniation. Contrast-enhanced spinal cord myelopathic lesions are very rare and resemble much more tumors and inflammatory processes. However, the principal treatment approach totally differs depending on pathology. When there are both a disc herniation and a high clinical suspicion; biopsy should be delayed. The most probable solution will be surgery for the disc disease with thorough preoperative scanning of vascular malformations; clinical and radiological close follow-up after surgery. Biopsy or surgical resection can be performed if patient deteriorates despite the primary surgery.

Wilms' tumor is the most common malignant renal tumor in childhood. The brain metastasis of a Wilms' tumor with anaplastic histopathology is rare. We present the case of an 8-year-old girl with Wilms' tumor, who presented with multiple brain metastases 5 years after her primary diagnosis. The brain masses were diagnosed after a generalized tonic-clonic seizure attack. The big solid mass in the cerebellum was resected, and whole-brain radiotherapy was performed, after which, she succumbed to her disease. In the case of clinical suspicion, cranial surveillance should be included in the routine clinical work-up for Wilms' tumor. Combined aggressive therapy (surgery+radiotherapy+chemotherapy) should be applied whenever possible, for both better survival and palliative aspects.

High adsorption capacity, reusability and sustainability are the most important features sought in the adsorbent preferences to be used in wastewater treatment. In this research work, magnetic composite beads prepared from fruit peels (nectarine and orange) and alginate (ALG) as biopolymers (NAF and OAF) were synthesized by dropping and pH-precipitation method as alternative adsorbents. By encapsulating the adsorbent using alginate and imparting magnetic properties, the separation of the adsorbent from water after the adsorption process has been simplified. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX)-mapping and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were performed to examine the surface chemical structure and surface morphological structure of these new synthesized biosorbents. The calculated maximum adsorption capacities were 224.3 mg/g for OAF and 256.5 mg/g for NAF at 298 K and pH =2.0. It was observed that the adsorption process for both adsorbents was endothermic and spontaneous. Moreover, the adsorptions of Cr (VI) onto both adsorbents followed the pseudo-second order model and fit the Langmuir isotherm model better. OAF and NAF were found to be reusable with stable adsorption capacity for at least five cycles. Flavonoids, a diverse group of natural compounds abundant in plants, fruits, and seeds, are not only responsible for the vibrant colors, fragrances, and flavors found in nature but also possess significant health benefits. Representing a secondary metabolite, these phytonutrients contribute to overall well-being. They have garnered considerable interest due to their diverse biological roles, encompassing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. Flavonoids exert anticancer properties by interfering with different signaling pathways and molecules. Also, they have been demonstrated to exert chemosensitization features, where flavonoids may enhance the effectiveness of chemotherapy, and hold promise for improving cancer treatment outcomes as they have been discovered to make cancer cells more responsive to treatment. Understanding their influence on the regulation of cellular signaling provides a foundation for exploring their potential in combination with different chemotherapy agents and their possible single use for cancer treatment. Besides, they are believed to present a cost-effective approach to cancer therapeutics with possible implications for reducing the side effects of the current chemotherapy regimens, which can be a great therapeutic strategy for treating cancer types, including leukemia. The mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells that were initially discovered in the bone marrow in the late 1960s but have so far been discovered in almost all tissues of the body. The multipotent property of MSCs enables them to differentiate into various cell types and lineages, such as adipocytes, chondrocytes, and osteocytes. The immunomodulation capacity and tumor-targeting features of MSCs made their use crucial for cell-based therapies in cancer treatment, yet limited advancement could be observed in translational medicine prospects due to the need for more information regarding the controversial roles of MSCs in crosstalk tumors. In this review, we discuss the therapeutic potential of MSCs, the controversial roles played by MSCs in cancer progression, and the anticancer therapeutic strategies that are in association with MSCs. Finally, the clinical trials designed for the direct use of MSCs for cancer therapy or for their use in decreasing the side effects of other cancer therapies are also mentioned in this review to evaluate the current status of MSC-based cancer therapies., (© 2024.
