This paper presents a performance analysis of centralized spectrum sensing based on compressed measurements. We assume cooperative sensing, where unlicensed users individually perform compressed sensing and send their results to a fusion center, which makes the final decision about the presence or absence of a licensed user signal. Several cooperation schemes are considered, such as and-rule, or-rule, majority voting, soft equal-gain combining (EGC). The proposed analysis provides simplified closed-form expressions that calculate the required number of sensors, the required number of samples, the required compression ratio, and the required signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as a function of the probability of detection and the probability of the false alarm of the fusion center and of the sensors. The resulting expressions are derived by exploiting some accurate approximations of the test statistics of the fusion center and of the sensors, equipped with energy detectors. The obtained results are useful, especially for a low number of sensors and low sample sizes, where conventional closed-form expressions based on the central limit theorem (CLT) fail to provide accurate approximations. This paper proposes a novel simulation model to characterize the bit-error rate (BER) performance of coded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems that are affected by the Doppler spread. The proposed equivalent frequency-domain OFDM model (EFDOM) avoids the exact generation of the time-varying channel by introducing several parameters that summarize the statistical properties of the channel and of the intercarrier interference (ICI) that is generated by the time variation of the channel. Simulation results are used to prove that the proposed model can be used to accurately predict the BER of coded OFDM systems in Rayleigh and Rice doubly selective channels. An attractive feature of the proposed model is the significant reduction of the simulation time with respect to the exact model. We show by simulation that the simulation efficiency increases for channels with many multipath components, whereas it is independent of the size of the fast Fourier transform (FFT). The aim of this paper is to examine the effects of the nonlinear distortions introduced by the high-power amplifier in the downlink of direct-sequence code-division multiple-access systems. By modeling the nonlinear distortion effects as a signal power loss and a superimposed colored Gaussian noise, we derive the symbol-error rate (SER) of the minimum mean-squared error (mmse) detector in additive white Gaussian noise channels. Successively, we make use of a semianalytical approach to obtain the SER performance of linear multiuser detectors, such as the RAKE, decorrelator, and mmse receiver, in frequency-selective fading channels. Broadcast technology is at the beginning of a new era. It is characterized by the intensive use of the most advanced digital modulations formats (8VSB, QAM, OFDM) in combination with high power RF amplifiers. To date the linearity required for these digital formats has only been accomplished in cumbersome low efficiency class A amplifier or even more cumbersome feed-forward systems. A potentially more efficient and cost effective approach is the combination of non linear power amplifiers and a predistortion technique capable of compensating for the non linear amplifiers. Digital predistortion will provide a highly linear output and improved efficiency. Itelco has developed a digital adaptive base band predistorter to provide for improved performance and cost. The technique is independent of the modulation type, the output frequency, or the signal bandwidth. Furthermore the capability of automatic adaptive predistortion to compensate for the environment (temperature, power supply variations, aging ,and even operation during replacement of a faulty module) is highly desirable.

Recently, several approaches have been proposed for the equalization of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signals in challenging high-mobility scenarios. Among them, a minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) block linear equalizer (BLE), based on a band LDL factorization, is particularly attractive for its good tradeoff between performance and complexity. This paper extends this approach towards two directions. First, we boost the BER performance of the BLE by designing a receiver window specially tailored to the band LDL factorization. Second, we design an MMSE block decision-feedback equalizer (BDFE) that can be modified to support receiver windowing. All the proposed banded equalizers share a similar computational complexity, which is linear in the number of subcarriers. Simulation results show that the proposed receiver architectures are effective in reducing the BER performance degradation caused by the intercarrier interference (ICI) generated by time-varying channels. We also consider a basis expansion model (BEM) channel estimation approach, to establish its impact on the BER performance of the proposed banded equalizers.

It is well known that power amplifier induced nonlinear distortions produce a signal spectral regrowth at the transmitter output of digital radio communication systems. This effect is responsible for both adjacent channel interference and BER degradation. Signal predistortion is a technique that counteracts such phenomena. Technological advances in the last decade, renewing the interest in this technique, led to the realization of digital baseband (BB) predistorters that overcome the performance of the existing analog IF (Intermediate Frequency) ones. However, the substitution of an analog IF predistorter with a digital BB one forces to partially redesign the system architecture. An alternative approach is proposed in this paper, based on digital and analog techniques, which combines the precision of the digital BB solution with the practicality of an IF architecture. This solution is particularly interesting to substitute an old analog IF predistorter simply plugging-in the new digital one, without further changes in the transmitter architecture. Critical aspects, predistortion algorithms and simulation performance are presented with respect to a Digital Video Broadcasting system which is based on an OFDM modulation and is very sensitive to nonlinear distortions because of the adopted multicarrier modulation. The paper analyzes the performance of the downlink channel of a multimedia interactive service system which transmits the desired information by the frequency multiplexing of several OFDM signals compliant with the DVB-T standard. The effects of the nonlinear distortions introduced by a High Power Amplifier on the system performance are evaluated both in terms of the Bit Error Rate (BER) degradation in AWGN channels and of the spectral regrowth. The performance comparison to the case of a single DVB-T signal as well as the benefits of an ideal predistortion is also considered by comparing analytical results to computer simulations. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) baseband signals may be modeled by complex Gaussian processes with Rayleigh envelope distribution and uniform phase distribution, if the number of carriers is sufficiently large. The output correlation function of instantaneous nonlinear amplifiers and the signal-to-distortion ratio can be derived and expressed in an easy way. As a consequence, the output spectrum and the bit-error rate (BER) performance of OFDM systems in nonlinear additive white Gaussian noise channels are predictable both for uncompensated amplitude modulation/amplitude modulation (AM/AM) and amplitude modulation/pulse modulation (AM/PM) distortions and for ideal predistortion. The aim of this work is to obtain the analytical expressions for the output correlation function of a nonlinear device and for the BER performance. The results in closed-form solutions are derived for AM/AM and AM/PM curves approximated by Bessel series expansion and for the ideal predistortion case. The goal of this paper is to propose novel strategies for adaptive learning of signals defined over graphs, which are observed over a (randomly) time-varying subset of vertices. We recast two classical adaptive algorithms in the graph signal processing framework, namely the least mean squares (LMS) and the recursive least squares (RLS) adaptive estimation strategies. For both methods, a detailed mean-square analysis illustrates the effect of random sampling on the adaptive reconstruction capability and the steady-state performance. Then, several probabilistic sampling strategies are proposed to design the sampling probability at each node in the graph, with the aim of optimizing the tradeoff between steady-state performance, graph sampling rate, and convergence rate of the adaptive algorithms. Finally, a distributed RLS strategy is derived and shown to be convergent to its centralized counterpart. Numerical simulations carried out over both synthetic and real data illustrate the good performance of the proposed sampling and recovery strategies for (distributed) adaptive learning of signals defined over graphs. This paper proposes and discusses two software implementations of the DVB-T modulator, using C++ and MATLAB, respectively. All the key features of the DVB-T standard are included. The C++ DVB-T modulator, incorporated into the Iris framework developed by Trinity College of Dublin, works in real time on an Intel Core i7 2.4 GHz CPU with the Iris testbed. The MATLAB-based DVB-T modulator is coupled with a receiver implementation with channel estimation, equalization, soft-output demapping, and channel decoding. The validation step demonstrates that the proposed DVB-T software implementations generate standard-compliant DVB-T signals that are correctly received by commercially available TV sets and USB dongles. Multicarrier wireless communication systems, which usually operate over frequency-selective fading channels, are practically also impaired by environmental impulsive noise. In order to boost the signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) at the receiver, this paper proposes and analyzes nonlinear estimators based on the multiple thresholding, with associated piecewise attenuation, or clipping, of the received signal amplitude. The proposed approach exploits a new heuristic criterion to set the thresholds. Although the obtained thresholds are slightly suboptimal in output SNR, the proposed approach has the nice and useful property to allow closed-form analytical derivations for both the threshold(s) and the associated attenuating/clipping parameters, when a Gaussian source is impaired by an impulsive noise. Such a quite general class of estimators, which could be applied also in other scenarios, is particularly attractive for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing communication systems in the presence of additive multicomponent impulsive noise. We are also letting to derive closed-form expressions for the output SNR in frequency-selective multipath fading channels. The SNR performance and the associated symbol error rate have been compared with those of more traditional blanking, clipping, and clipping-blanking processors. Specifically, analytical and simulation results, carried out for Class-A and symmetrical alpha-stable (SαS) impulsive noise, show that the proposed threshold-based suppressors are superior to the traditional ones. Furthermore, as the number of thresholds increases, the proposed estimators closely approach the performance of the optimal minimum mean square error Bayesian estimator. Assuming the graph signal to be bandlimited, the method enables distributed reconstruction, with guaranteed performance in terms of mean-square error, and tracking from a limited number of sampled observations taken from a subset of vertices. A detailed mean-square analysis is carried out and illustrates the role played by the sampling strategy on the performance of the proposed method. Finally, some useful strategies for distributed selection of the sampling set are provided. Several numerical results validate our theoretical findings, and illustrate the performance of the proposed method for distributed adaptive learning of signals defined over graphs. The minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) is one of the most popular criteria for Bayesian estimation. Conversely, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is a typical performance criterion in communications, radar, and generally detection theory. In this paper, we first formalize an SNR criterion to design an estimator, and then we prove that there exists an equivalence between MMSE and maximum-SNR estimators, for any statistics. We also extend this equivalence to specific classes of suboptimal estimators, which are expressed by a basis expansion model (BEM). Then, by exploiting an orthogonal BEM for the estimator, we derive the MMSE estimator constrained to a given quantization resolution of the noisy observations, and we prove that this suboptimal MMSE estimator tends to the optimal MMSE estimator that uses an infinite resolution of the observation. Besides, we derive closed-form expressions for the mean-squared error (MSE) and for the SNR of the proposed suboptimal estimators, and we show that these expressions constitute tight, asymptotically exact, bounds for the optimal MMSE, and maximum SNR. Fifth-generation (5G) cellular communications promise to deliver the gigabit experience to mobile users, with a capacity increase of up to three orders of magnitude with respect to current long-term evolution (LTE) systems. There is widespread agreement that such an ambitious goal will be realized through a combination of innovative techniques involving different network layers. At the physical layer, the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation format, along with its multiple-access strategy orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), is not taken for granted, and several alternatives promising larger values of spectral efficiency are being considered. This article provides a review of some modulation formats suited for 5G, enriched by a comparative analysis of their performance in a ?cellular environment, and by a discussion on their interactions with specific 5G ingredients. This letter derives the minimum mean square error (MMSE) Bayesian estimator for a Gaussian source impaired by additive Middleton's Class-A impulsive noise. Additionally, as low-complex alternatives, the letter considers two popular suboptimal estimators, such as the soft-limiter and the blanker. The optimum MMSE thresholds for these suboptimal estimators are obtained by iteratively solving fixed point equations. The theoretical findings are corroborated by simulation results, which highlight the MSE performance penalty of the suboptimal estimators may be negligible with respect to the optimal Bayesian estimator (OBE). We examine the small sample size performance of the energy detector for spectrum sensing in AWGN. By making use of the cube-of-Gaussian approximation of chi-squared random variables, we derive a novel, simple, and accurate analytical expression for the minimum number of samples required to achieve a desired probability of detection and false alarm. This way, the number of samples can be calculated by the energy detector with low complexity. We also propose a useful approximation for the performance of cooperative energy detection. Terrestrial or Handheld Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-T/H) and Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) are two popular broadcasting standards that enable digital television transmissions to handheld receivers. This paper presents a comprehensive performance comparison between the physical layers of DVB-T/H and T-DMB when employed for mobile communications. By exploiting a recently proposed fast simulation model, we assess the BER of the two coded OFDM systems in several realistic scenarios, taking into account Rayleigh and Rice channels, different mobile speeds, inner and outer channel coding, channel estimation, and one or two receive an- tennas. Our comparison shows that the DVB-T/H physical layer performance highly depends on the delay spread of the channel, whereas T-DMB is less sensitive to the frequency selectivity of the channel. As a result, DVB-T/H yields better performance than T-DMB in typical Rayleigh channels with significant delay spread. On the contrary, at high SNR, T-DMB outperforms DVB-T/H in Rice channels with low delay spread. This paper presents a feasibility study for a very high data rate receiver operating in the K/Ka-band suitable to future Moon exploration missions. The receiver specifications are outlined starting from the mission scenario and from a careful system analysis. The designed architecture uses a low noise front-end to down-convert the incoming K/Ka-band signal into a 3.7 GHz intermediate frequency (IF). For maximum flexibility, a software defined radio (SDR) is adopted for the I/Q demodulation and for the analog to digital conversion (ADC). The decoding operations and the data interface are carried out by a processor based on field programmable gate array (FPGA) circuits. To experimentally verify the above concepts, a preliminary front-end breadboard is implemented, operating between 27.5 and 30 GHz. The breadboard, which uses components off the shelf (COTS) and evaluation boards (EVBs), is characterized by a 46 dB gain, a 3.4 dB noise figure and a − 37 dBm input-referred 1 dB compression point. Finally, a 40 Msym / s quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal is demodulated by means of a commercially available SDR, demonstrating the above concept. The importance of these results is that they have been obtained exploiting a class of miniaturized and low cost microwave integrated circuits currently available on the market, opening the way to a dense communication infrastructure on cislunar space. This paper deals with coded-excitation techniques for ultrasound medical echography. Specifically, linear Huffman coding is proposed as an alternative approach to other widely established techniques, such as complementary Golay coding and linear frequency modulation. The code design is guided by an optimization procedure that boosts the signal-to-noise ratio gain (GSNR) and, interestingly, also makes the code robust in pulsed-Doppler applications. The paper capitalizes on a thorough analytical model that can be used to design any linear coded-excitation system. This model highlights that the performance in frequency-dependent attenuating media mostly depends on the pulse-shaping waveform when the codes are characterized by almost ideal (i.e., Kronecker delta) autocorrelation. In this framework, different pulse shapers and different code lengths are considered to identify coded signals that optimize the contrast resolution at the output of the receiver pulse compression. Computer simulations confirm that the proposed Huffman codes are particularly effective, and that there are scenarios in which they may be preferable to the other established approaches, both in attenuating and non-attenuating media. Specifically, for a single scatterer at 150 mm in a 0.7-dB/(MHz·cm) attenuating medium, the proposed Huffman design achieves a main-to-side lobe ratio (MSR) equal to 65 dB, whereas tapered linear frequency modulation and classical complementary Golay codes achieve 35 and 45 dB, respectively.
