Six Holstein steers, 6 mo of age, with a BW range of 180 to 200 kg were used to determine effects of abomasal casein infusion and recombinant bovine somatotropin on amino acid absorption and metabolism in the gut and liver. Catheters were positioned in the hepatic vein, the hepatic portal vein, two mesenteric veins, and a mesenteric artery. Using the same basal diet, treatments consisted of 1) basal diet only (Control), 2) abomasal casein infusion of 300 g/d (Casein), and 3) abomasal casein infusion plus daily injection of 20 mg of bovine somatotropin (ST). All steers were fed the basal diet at a rate of 24 g/kg of BW on a DM basis, in 12 equal meals at 2-h intervals. Initially, Casein and ST treatments were in a balanced cross-over design, and then all steers received the Control treatment. Casein infusion tended to increase BW gain but did not affect BW gain per unit of N intake. The ST treatment increased weight gain (P < .01) and efficiency of dietary DM (P < .01) and N (P < .01) utilization by more than 40% and increased the percentage of absorbed N retained. Nonessential, essential, and total amino acid fluxes in portal-drained viscera (PDV) and their net removal by the liver were not affected by casein infusion. However, ST tended to reduce PDV flux of essential, nonessential, and total amino acids by approximately 30%, and their removal by the liver (P < .08). As a result, ST increased, compared with casein, release of essential (P < .06) and total (P < .10) amino acids from the total splanchnic pool (TSP) into peripheral blood. The ST treatment increased the availability of absorbed amino acids to peripheral tissues, but it did not affect the amino acid profile delivered from splanchnic tissues, especially that of essential amino acids. Although the effects of deleterious alleles often are predicted to be greater in stressful environments, there is no theoretical basis for this prediction and the empirical evidence is mixed. Here we characterized the effects of three types of abiotic stress (thermal, oxidative and hyperosmotic) on two sets of nematode (Caenorhabditis elegans) mutation accumulation (MA) lines that differ by threefold in fitness. We compared the survival and egg-to-adult viability between environments (benign and stressful) and between fitness categories (high-fitness MA, low-fitness MA). If the environment and mutation load have synergistic effects on trait means, then the difference between the high and low-fitness MA lines should be larger in stressful environments. Although the stress treatments consistently decreased survival and/or viability, we did not detect significant interactions between fitness categories and environment types. In contrast, we did find consistent evidence for synergistic effects on (micro)environmental variation. The lack of signal in trait means likely reflects the very low starting fitness of some low-fitness MA lines, the potential for cross-stress responses and the context dependence of mutational effects. In addition, the large increases in the environmental variance in the stressful environments may have masked small changes in trait means. In this paper, we present several dielectric waveguide (DWG) setups that enable the transition between radar front ends and antennas in challenging, industrial environments. Apart from good propagation behavior, DWG provide a nearly dispersion free transmission over large distances. Furthermore, they can be used as an electrical insulator in places with critical creep distances, in high temperature environments, and for applications with limited installation space. Fundamentals concerning the ideal propagation mode and adequate waveguide–fiber transitions are presented. Results of electromagnetic simulations as well as measurements on manufactured DWG are discussed in detail. This paper presents a novel density measuring concept for gas/coal particle compositions in pneumatic conveying systems. The proposed monitoring system uses horn antennas to perform complex electromagnetic transmittance measurements through the cross section of the conveying tube. The phase of the complex transmittance gives information about the effective permittivity, which is related to the mean volume fraction of the coal. Electromagnetic field simulations have been performed for the evaluation of the concept and the performance of the designed setup. A test stand for measurements on coal dust under reproducible conditions and with well-defined particle concentrations has been developed and implemented. The test tube has a diameter of 200mm and a length of 400 mm. Coal particles with a diameter between 20 µm and 100 µm have been dispersed by injecting nitrogen gas inside the test tube. Complex transmission measurements are performed in the implemented setup with a calibrated vector network analyzer within a frequency range of 8-12 GHz. Ultrafast laser oscillators have become ubiquitous in science and technology. For many years, however, their pulse energy has been limited to the nanojoule regime. Applications requiring more intense pulses relied on complex amplifier systems, which typically operate at low pulse repetition rates of the order of kilohertz. Recently, the pulse energy of femtosecond laser oscillators has greatly increased, such that some of these experiments can now be driven at multimegahertz repetition rates, which opens promising new avenues for many applications. We review the current state of the art of high-energy femtosecond laser oscillators, in particular mode-locked thin-disk lasers, and discuss their potential to drive high-field science experiments at multimegahertz repetition rates. Contents In a large pig breeding herd with high prevalence of post-parturient diseases of the sows, weaned sows of different parity groups with (n = 663) or without (n = 1125) recidiving mastitis metritis agalactia (MMA) in their previous history were subjected to ultrasonography. A total of 114 of 663 sows with recidiving MMA in their previous history and with ultrasonographic visible mammary gland changes, and 157 of sows without recidiving MMA in their previous history were culled and subjected to gross pathological and bacteriological examination of their mammary glands. The sows having suffered MMA had more (p < 0.001) hyperechogenic images in their mammary glands compared with the sow having suffered no recidiving MMA. Abdominal glands were more (p < 0.01) prone to pathological changes compared with the pectoral ones. Sows of high parity had more hyperechogenic images and gross pathological changes in their mammary glands compared with the sows of low parity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PURPOSE: Wavefront aberrometers often represent the wavefront in terms of Zernike polynomials. The fit coefficients for these polynomials are pupil-size dependent; hence it is desirable to be able to calculate polynomial coefficients at a different pupil size from the initial measurement. METHODS: We developed a method for scaling the Zernike fit coefficients for different sized pupils and compared them to the coefficients calculated by reanalyzing the original data. We evaluated cases where the initial set of Zernike coefficients was an accurate representation of the data as well as cases where the Zernike polynomials fit the data poorly. RESULTS: The rescaling methods work well in all cases with a good original fit (as measured by the gradient root-mean-square [RMS] fit error). Rescaling and reanalyzing also agree well over a small scaling range. However, if the original fit was poor, large errors result if the rescaling is more than ∼25%. CONCLUSIONS: Rescaling works well and is useful as long as the RMS fit error can be evaluated. The RMS difference between the zonal reconstruction and the Zernike fit is useful for determining this fit error. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to prove the effect of‘fixed time insemination’ and insemination at standing oestrus after post-weaning application of GnRH, in a Croatian large breeding unit, 502 sows were assigned to three groups and were artificially inseminated (AI) at their first post-weaning oestrus as many times as they stand, in 24-h intervals. The groups were treated as follows: group 1 (control, n = 160) were AI during their standing reflex; group 2 [‘GnRH-fixed time insemination’ (GnRH-FT-AI), n = 175] were AI, independent of detection of oestrus and following administration of GnRH-agonist at 96 h post-weaning; group 3 [GnRH insemination at standing oestrus (GnRH-OE-AI), n = 167] the animals were GnRH-agonist treated as group 2 and were AI at their standing reflex. Pre-trial daily average lactational feed intake, average daily feed intake from weaning to oestrus, oestrus within 6 days post-weaning (%), ovulation within 6 days post-weaning (%), weaning-to-oestrus interval (h), duration of oestrus (h), follicle size (mm), interval from oestrus to ovulation (h), subsequent day 24 pregnancy rate (%), farrowing rate (%) and total pigs born were evaluated. Pre-trial average daily lactational voluntary feed intake was 7.1 ± 0.08 kg in group 1, 7.0 ± 0.07 kg in group 2 and 7.1 ± 0.17 kg in group 3 (p > 0.05). Average voluntary daily feed intake from weaning to oestrus was 5.1 ± 0.3 kg in group 1, 5.2 ± 0.5 kg in group 2 and 5.2 ± 0.19 kg in group 3 (p > 0.05). Oestrus was detected within 6 days post-weaning in 134 (83.8%) in control, 164 (93.7%) in GnRH-FT-AI and 155 (92.8%) animals in GnRH-OE-AI groups (p = 0.05). Follicle size did not differ (p > 0.05) among the groups. In control 82.8%, in GnRH-FT-AI 91.5% and in GnRH-OE-AI 91.0% of the sows ovulated within 6 days post-weaning (p = 0.04), and had 80.6, 90.9 and 89.7% 24-day pregnancy rates (p = 0.16), respectively. In GnRH-FT-AI group 90.2%, in GnRH-OE-AI sows 89.7%, in control animals 79.9% farrowing rates were recorded (p = 0.17). Weaning to oestrus interval was 113.1 h in control, 114.1 h in GnRH-FT-AI and 112.6 h GnRH-OE-AI (p > 0.05). Duration of oestrus was significantly shorter in GnRH-FT-AI (44.9 h) and GnRH-OE-AI (48.1 h) animals, compared with the control (62.9 h) sows (p = 0.001). Similarly, the interval from oestrus to ovulation revealed significant (p = 0.004) differences between the groups (control 44.1 h, GnRH-OE-AI 34.1 h and GnRH-FT-AI 32.9 h). GnRH-FT-AI (12.5) and GnRH-OE-AI (12.6) sows had significantly higher (p = 0.01) number of total pigs born (n = 10.4) compared with control sows. GnRH-agonist-gel treatment to the sow shortens duration of oestrus, the interval from oestrus to ovulation, and may eliminate the need for oestrus detection in the hands of skilled personnel. The exceptional diversity of insects is often attributed to the effects of specialized relationships between insects and their hosts. Parasite–host interactions are influenced by current natural selection and dispersal, in addition to historical effects that may include past selection, vicariance, and random genetic drift. Both current and historical events can lead to reduced fitness on some hosts. If trade-offs in fitness on alternate hosts are common, adaptation to one host can prevent adaptation to another, giving rise to genetic differentiation among host-associated lineages. Previous studies of Diaeretiella rapae (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae), a parasitoid of aphids, have revealed additive genetic differences in performance between populations that parasitize different aphid host species. To determine whether D. rapae populations collected from different aphid hosts have diverged into genetically independent lineages, we constructed a haplotype network based on sequence variation in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). We used single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis to examine 2041 base pairs of mtDNA and to identify nucleotide sequences of 42 unique SSCP haplotypes. We found no association between mtDNA haplotypes and host species in either the ancestral range (Europe, Mediterranean region, Middle East, Asia) or part of the introduced range (western North America). Haplotypes likely to be ancestral were geographically widespread and found on both hosts, suggesting that the ability to use both hosts evolved prior to the diversification of the mtDNA. We present two milestone results that confirm that thin disk lasers are excellent candidates for driving extreme nonlinear optics experiments. In a first experiment using the broadband mixed sesquioxide gain material Yb:LuScO3, we demonstrate that thin disk lasers can access the sub-100 fs regime. In a second experiment, we detect for the first time the carrier envelope offset (CEO) frequency beat of an Yb:Lu2O3 thin disk laser.

Describes an experiment developed at Providence College in Rhode Island, where chemistry students use internal reflection and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy techniques to determine molecular structure and identify unknown ones. Introduction: Civilian healthcare workers (HCW) and medical facilities are directly and indirectly impacted by armed conflict. In the Russia-Ukraine war, acute trauma care needs grew, the workforce was destabilised by HCW migrating or shifting roles to meet conflict needs, and facilities faced surge events. Chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) exposure risks created unique preparedness needs. In response, an academic and international non-governmental organisation partnership was formed to design, implement and evaluate a locally prioritised training programme in Ukraine., Methods: Seven in-person training courses (Advanced Trauma Life Support, Trauma Nursing Fundamentals, Pediatric Trauma Fundamentals, Prehospital Trauma Fundamentals, Stop the Bleed, Mass Casualty Management and CBRNE Preparedness) were adapted, translated, taught and evaluated in seven Ukrainian oblasts (regions; Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Lviv, Chernihiv and Mykolaiv) during the war. Topics were determined by available needs assessments and further adapted based on course participant feedback and evolving logistic and security challenges. Change in participant knowledge and confidence levels was assessed through precourse and postcourse knowledge and self-confidence evaluations and follow-up surveys. Initial courses were taught by international instructors and transitioned to Ukrainian instructors as they were trained. Web-based asynchronous videos in Ukrainian were developed to complement and reinforce in-person training., Results: 4368 participants were trained in 164 courses from August 2022 to April 2023. 223 instructors were trained. Aggregate participant knowledge and self-confidence significantly improved in all courses. Interval follow-up responses indicated that the training was useful and 83.3% had used the skills within 8 weeks of training. Twenty-seven training videos were created which, as of April 2023, have been viewed over 1 700 000 times in 500 cities throughout Ukraine., Conclusions: Locally prioritised training can be rapidly developed and delivered in an armed conflict setting providing civilians and frontline HCW with the skills and knowledge required to care for patients. Logistics, communication, equipment and security challenges can be overcome through strategic in-country partnerships. Background:  The risk of thrombosis and bleeding in myelofibrosis (MF) has been historically underappreciated. We sought to investigate potential molecular and clinical risk factors for venous (VTE) and arterial (ATE) thrombotic events as well as bleeding episodes., Methods:  Data from 246 consecutive MF patients were analyzed. Driver mutations were tested in 191 patients., Results:  In total, 181 mutations were found in 177 MF patients: 118 (61.8%) patients showed JAK2 - V617F , 50 patients (26.2%) showed CALR , and 6 patients (3.1%) showed MPL mutations. Two patients were JAK2 - V617F and MPL positive and one patient was positive for all three genes. Fourteen (7.3%) patients were triple negative. The JAK2 - V617F allele burden was assessed in 63 JAK2-V617F -mutated patients, revealing a median of 35.6% (range: 5.0-96.0). At the time of MF diagnosis and during follow-up, 84 thrombotic events (52 VTEs and 32 ATEs) were observed, corresponding to 6.6% of patients per year. A significant association was found between JAK2-V617F mutation (OR: 2.5, 95% CI: 1.1-5.6) and prior VTE (OR: 7.6, 95% CI: 2.1-27.1) with an increased risk of VTE. Patients with prefibrotic MF had a higher rate of ATE than patients with overt MF. Hemorrhagic events occurred in 34 (13.8%) patients, corresponding to 3.8% of patients per year. Fibrosis grade 3 was associated with bleeding risk (OR: 3.4, 95% CI: 1.2-9.2, p  = 0.02)., Conclusions:  The presence of the JAK2-V617F mutation, regardless of allele burden, and prior thrombosis were strongly associated with an increased risk of VTE. Background: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) can regulate gene expression, controlling numerous cellular processes. Dysregulation of miRNA function is linked to various diseases, making them attractive diagnostic and therapeutic targets. Examples include hsa-miR-92a-3p, hsa-miR-126-3p, hsa-miR-143-3p, hsa-miR-145-5p and hsa-miR-204-5p, which are associated with endothelial function. Their prevalence in Sjögren's disease (SjD) is unknown. We assessed the prevalence of these miRNAs in serum of patients with SjD, correlating levels with cardiovascular risk factors and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) to evaluate their utility in risk stratification., Methods: 199 patients with SjD and 100 age and sex-matched healthy controls (HC) were included in the study. Five different miRNAs (hsa-miR-92a-3p; hsa-miR-126-3p; hsa-miR143-3p; hsa-miR-145-5p; hsa-miR-204-5p) were analysed by quantitative real-time PCR. The miRNA results were compared with known clinical and disease-related parameters., Results: Four miRNAs showed significantly different expressions compared with HC. MiR-92a-3p was upregulated (p=0.025) and miR-126-3p (p=0.044), miR-143-3p (p=0.006) and miR-204-5p (p=0.009) downregulated in SjD compared with HC. The comparison between HC and SjD with/without organ involvement revealed descriptively increased miR-92a-3p levels in patients with SjD with organ involvement (p=0.087). Furthermore, miR-92a-3p levels correlated positively with cIMT as an expression of subclinical atherosclerosis (r=0.148, p=0.04)., Conclusion: In conclusion, patients with SjD demonstrated differences in their expression of miRNAs linked to regulation of endothelial function. Reduction of specific miRNAs was associated with increased cardiovascular risk, suggesting a potentially protective role for these miRNAs.
