Abstract

The transitional nuclei Xe132 and Xe133 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe136+Pb208 MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (ii) in the Xe136+Pt198 MNT reaction employing the GAMMASPHERE spectrometer in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iii) as an evaporation residue after a Te130(α,xn)Xe134-xn fusion-evaporation reaction employing the HORUS γ-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemes are considerably extended above the Jπ=(7-) and (10+) isomers in Xe132 and above the 11/2- isomer in Xe133. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z=54 as well as the N=78 and N=79 chains. Furthermore, evidence is found for a long-lived (T1/2â‰1μs) isomer in Xe133 which closes a gap along the N=79 isotones. Shell-model calculations employing the SN100PN and PQM130 effective interactions reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to the interpretation of the observed high-spin features.

Abstract

The high-spin structures and isomers of the N=81 isotones Xe135 and Ba137 are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe136+U238 and (ii) Xe136+Pb208 MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (iii) in the Xe136+Pt198 MNT reaction employing the γ-ray array GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iv) via a B11+Te130 fusion-evaporation reaction with the HORUS γ-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemesof Xe135 and Ba137 are considerably extended to higher energies. The 2058-keV (19/2-) state in Xe135 is identified as an isomer, closing a gap in the systematics along the N=81 isotones. Its half-life is measured to be 9.0(9) ns, corresponding to a reduced transition probability of B(E2,19/2-→15/2-)=0.52(6) W.u. The experimentally deduced reduced transition probabilities of the isomeric states are compared to shell-model predictions. Latest shell-model calculations reproduce the experimental findings generally well and provide guidance to the interpretation of the new levels.

Abstract

Detailed spectroscopic information on the N∼82 nuclei is necessary to benchmark shell-model calculations in the region. The nuclear structure above long-lived isomers in Xe134 is investigated after multinucleon transfer (MNT) and actinide fission. Xenon-134 was populated as (i) a transfer product in Xe136+U238 and Xe136+Pb208 MNT reactions and (ii) as a fission product in the Xe136+U238 reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA). Trajectory reconstruction has been applied for the complete identification of beamlike transfer products with the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. The Xe136+Pt198 MNT reaction was studied with the γ-ray spectrometer GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas detector array Compact Heavy Ion Counter (CHICO). Several high-spin states in Xe134 on top of the two long-lived isomers are discovered based on γγ-coincidence relationships and information on the γ-ray angular distributions as well as excitation energies from the total kinetic energy loss and fission fragments. The revised level scheme of Xe134 is extended up to an excitation energy of 5.832 MeV with tentative spin-parity assignments up to 16+. Previous assignments of states above the 7- isomer are revised. Latest shell-model calculations employing two different effective interactions reproduce the experimental findings and support the new spin and parity assignments.

Abstract

Analytical methodologies for the absolute quantitation of proteins typically include a digest step often using trypsin as the proteolytic enzyme. In the majority of cases, offline and on-line digestion methods are implemented prior to an LC-MS analysis system, requiring a high sequence coverage for unambiguous protein identification. For proteins with a strong overlap in amino acid sequence, e.g., therapeutic proteins and their metabolites, it is essential to separate proteins prior to digestion and the subsequent electrospray mass spectrometry analysis of marker peptides. Here, we present an on-line postcolumn solution-phase digestion methodology that is based on the continuous infusion of the proteolytic enzyme pepsin downstream to the nano C18 reversed-phase column. Proteins are identified based on their retention time in combination with the detection of specific marker peptides formed in the postcolumn digest. The optimization of important parameters such as enzyme concentration, reaction time, and organic modifier concentration is described. We demonstrated that the continuous-flow solution-phase digest method can be coupled on-line to the reversed-phase gradient liquid chromatography separation of proteins. Detection limits obtained for five model proteins, detected as specific marker peptides with m/z values of 300-1000, range from 30 to 90 fmol, with a linear response up to 3 pmol.

A rapid onset of quadrupole deformation is known to occur around the neutron number 60 in the neutron-rich Zr and Sr isotopes. This shape change has made the neutron-rich A = 100 region an active area of experimental and theoretical studies for many decades now. We report in this contribution new experimental results in the neutron rich 96,98Sr investigated by safe Coulomb excitation of radioactive beams at the REX-ISOLDE facility, CERN. Reduced transition probabilities and spectroscopic quadrupole moments have been extracted from the differential Coulomb excitation cross section supporting the scenario of shape coexistence/change at N=60. Future perspectives are presented including the recent experimental campaign performed at ILL-Grenoble.

Abstract

Lifetimes of first 4+ and 6+ states have been measured in neutron-rich isotopes of Zr, Mo, Ru and Pd using the recoil distance Doppler shift method at GANIL. The nuclei were produced through a fusion-fission reaction in inverse kinematics. The fission fragments were fully identified in the large-acceptance VAMOS spectrometer and γ-rays were detected in coincidence with the EXOGAM germanium array. Lifetimes of excited states in the range of 1–100 ps were measured with the Cologne plunger. Preliminary lifetime results are presented as well as a discussion on the evolution of the collectivity in this region.

Abstract

A first performance test of the Coulomb excitation multipolarimetry (Coulex-multipolarimetry) method is presented. It is based on a 85 Br π p 3 / 2 → π p 1 / 2 spin-flip experiment performed as part of the PreSPEC-AGATA campaign at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (GSI). Via determination of background levels around the expected 85 Br excitations as well as measured 197 Au excitations, an upper limit for the M1 transition strength of the 1 / 2 1 - → 3 / 2 g.s. - transition in 85 Br and a lower beam time limit for upcoming experimental campaigns utilizing Coulex-multipolarimetry have been inferred. Abstract

Several experiments were conducted at the 10 MV Van-de-Graaff tandem accelerator at the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Cologne, to detect proton emission from the isomeric 6457-keV 10 + state in 54 Ni . Excitation functions for two fusion–evaporation reactions were measured to maximise the population of the rare two-neutron evaporation channel from a 56 Ni compound nucleus. The search for delayed proton emission was based on the 28 Si ( 28 Si , 2 n ) 54 Ni reaction at a beam energy of 70 MeV. For this reaction, a cross-section limit for the population of the 10 + state in 54 Ni and its proton-decay branch was determined to be σ < 22 nb. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Lifetimes of short-lived excited states in a wide range of neutron-rich fission fragments were measured using the recoil distance Doppler shift (RDDS) technique, which was applied to fusion-fission reactions in inverse kinematics for the first time. The fission fragments were identified eventby- event in mass, charge, and atomic number using the VAMOS magnetic spectrometer at GANIL. Gamma rays originating from the fission fragments were measured with the EXOGAM array of Ge Clover detectors around the target position. Using a degrader, the change in the Doppler shift of the γ ray allows the application of the RDDS method. Abstract

The Coulomb excitation experiment to study electromagnetic structure of low-lying states in 42Ca with a focus on a possible superdeformation in this nucleus was performed at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro in Italy. Abstract

In-beam gamma-ray and conversion electron spectroscopic studies have been performed on the 253 No nucleus. A strongly coupled rotational band has been identified and the improved statistics allows an assignment of the band structure as built on the $\ensuremath 9/2^-[734]_{\nu}$ ground state. Abstract

A reversed-phase HPLC coupled on-line to a radical scavenging detection system and MS/MS was developed in order to combine separation, activity determination and structural identification of anti-oxidants in complex mixtures in one run. The sample was separated by HPLC and the eluate split into two flows. The major portion was fed into an electrospray ionisation MS/MS system, while the minor part was mixed with a free radical, 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and the reaction determined spectrophotometrically. The negative peaks, which indicated the presence of anti-oxidant activity, were monitored by measuring the decrease in absorbance at 517 nm. The developed method was successfully applied to the identification of anti-oxidant compounds in a fraction, obtained by solid-phase extraction, of an extract of a Thai medicinal plant, Butea superba Roxb. Abstract

Heavy 65-70Co, 68-74Ni, 70-76Cu and 74-81Ga isotopes were produced at the LISOL facility by means of 30 MeV proton-induced fission of 238U. Production rates were deduced and compared to two types of cross-section calculations: the empirical model (V. Rubchenya, private communication) and the PROFI code. Abstract

An element-selective laser ion source has been used to produce beams of exotic radioactive nuclei and to study their decay properties. The operational principle of the ion source is based on selective resonant laser ionization of nuclear reaction products thermalized and neutralized in a noble gas at high pressure. The ion source has been installed at the Leuven Isotope Separator On-Line (LISOL), which is coupled on-line to the cyclotron accelerator at Louvain-la-Neuve. 54,55Ni and 54,55Co isotopes were produced in light-ion-induced fusion reactions. Exotic nickel, cobalt and copper nuclei were produced in proton-induced fission of 238U. The b decay of the 68–74Ni, 67–70Co, 70–75Cu and 110–114Rh isotopes has been studied by means of β–γ and γ–γ spectroscopy. Recently, the laser ion source has been used to produce neutron-deficient rhodium and ruthenium isotopes (91–95Rh, 98Rh, 90,91Ru) near the N=Z line in heavy ion-induced fusion reactions.
